Carrie Reed Lemley, 56, of Calera died Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Tuscaloosa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Leon Lemley, and her son, Danny Leon Lemley.

She is survived by her sisters, Addie Odom, Selether Morris, Janice Lofton and Marie Evans, all of McIntosh, Ala., and Joyce Eggers of Jemison; one brother, Kelsey Lemley and Daniel Lemley, both of Calera; one son-in-law, Curtis Barefield; and one daughter-in-law, Kym Barefield.

Service was June 8 at Rockco's Funeral Home in Montevallo, the Rev. John C. Spain presiding. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Micah Kenneth Martin

Father of one

Micah Kenneth Martin, 42, of Shelby died Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was born in December 1961.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Martin of Shelby; his daughter, Miranda Martin of Randolph; his mother, Myra Nell Martin of Columbiana; his brother, Eddie Junior Martin of Shelby; and his sisters, Sandra Merrell of Shelby and Shelia Livingston of Columbiana.

Graveside service was June 6 at Shelby Garden of Rest, the Rev. Tom Minor presiding and Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Franklin Thomas Mitchem

Chelsea resident

Franklin Thomas Mitchem, 60, of Chelsea died Tuesday, June 2, 2004, in a car accident. He was born Sept. 19, 1943, in Chelsea. He was preceded in death by Leonard Mitchem and Lewis Hill Mitchem.

He is survived by his children, Vicky Mitchem and Junior Mitchem; his mother, Iduma Mitchem; and two sisters, Lillian Mitchem and Lela Mae Ray.

Graveside service was June 4 at Mt. Signal Cemetery, the Rev. Leonard Irvin presiding, and Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Clifton Leon "Crypt Keeper" Smith Jr.

Brother of six

Clifton Leon "Crypt Keeper" Smith Jr., 37, died June 4, 2004, at his home. He was preceded in death by his brother, David C. Smith; one aunt, Mary E. (Charles E.) Bowlin; and four uncles, John B. (Eva) Lawley, Charles E. (Vernice) Lawley, Hubert H. (Mildred) Lawley and James L. Lawley.

He is survived by his parents, Clifton L. and Dorothy Smith of Maylene; four sisters, Karen (Jeff) Martin of Maylene, Tammy (George) Vanderslice of Wilsonville, Judy (Terry) Carr of Alabaster and Mary Ann Barker of Pell City; two brothers, Tommy (Mary) Smith of Maylene and James L. Smith Sr. of Columbiana; four nieces, Brenda (Rodney) Thomas of Trafford, Belinda (Wayne) Bradley of Alabaster, Linda (Jay) Williams of Maylene and Raven Peel of Chelsea; eight nephews, Terry (Beverly) Carr of Centreville, James L. Smith Jr. of Alabaster, Michael Smith of Wilton, Marty Smith of Kilby, Andy Dunaway of Helena, Jeffrey and Trenton Martin of Maylene and George Ryan Vanderslice of Wilsonville; eight great-nieces, Sabra Sims of Columbiana, Crystal and Tori Marczewski of Alabaster, Keri-Anne Carr of Centreville, Kendyl Carr of Maylene, Faith Bradley of Alabaster, Haley Williams of Maylene and Danielle Smith; three great-nephews, David II and Michael J. Sims of Columbiana and John-Terrell Carr of Centreville; a special cousin, Charles G. Carter; and a special little girl, Natalie Reach; along with a hostof other family and friends.

Service was June 7 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, Brother Ron Cox presiding. Burial followed in Ryans Cemetery in Maylene, Rockco's directing.

Earl "Pete" Thomas

Originally from Shelby County

Earl "Pete" Thomas, 58, died Monday, May 31, 2004, in Crestview, Fla. Originally from Shelby County, he moved to the Crestview, Fla., area 15 years ago form Robbins Air Force Base, Ga. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served with the U.S. Marines for five years and the U.S. Air Force for 22 years. He was employed by Wal-Mart for the past four years and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Crestview, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Thomas Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Janice Reeser Thomas; his mother, Edna West of Holt, Fla.; his son, Randal (Lisa) Thomas of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Lori (Norman) King of Minot, N.D., and Melanie (Tom) Belcher of Beale Air Force Base in California; his brother, Robert Thomas of Holt, Fla.; and his grandchildren, Amanda and Megan King, Samuel Thomas, Brandon Belcher and Jessica and Cailin Thomas.

Service was June 4 at Concord Baptist Church with burial following in Dargin Cemetery in Calera, Charter Funeral Home directing.

Claude "Mr. Fat" Walker Jr.

U.S. Army veteran

Claude "Mr. Fat" Walker Jr., 79, of Birmingham died Saturday, May 29, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, served in the United States Army during World War II and had retired from Alabama ByProducts Coke Plant in Tarrant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mountain Park, where he sang in the choir.

He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Verges; his brother, Elton Walker; his sisters, Sarah King and Ethel Ferguson; and his grandsons, Jon, Claude and Justin.

Service was June 5 at the church, pastor William M. Smith presiding. Burial followed June 7 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home in Calera directing.

LEONA MAE BLANKENSHIP

Grandmother of two

Leona Mae Blankenship, 73, of Montevallo died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Montevallo.

She is survived by one son, Earl Gandy of Montevallo; one brother, Charles Gandy of Columbiana; two grandchildren, Kristina and Brittany; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service was June 13 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Donald Bice presiding. Burial followed in Shelby Memory Gardens, Rockco's directing.

BILLIE J. BRANTLEY

Alabaster First Assembly member

Billie J. Brantley, 70, of Alabaster died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born Jan. 31, 1934, in Calera. She was a member of Alabaster First Assembly.

She is survived by her husband, Harold L. Brantley; sons, Kevin Brantley of Alabaster and Jeffrey Brantley of Alabaster; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was June 11 at Shelby Memory Gardens, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

JAMES ROBERT BROWN JR.

Former Wilton resident

James Robert Brown Jr., 71, of Alabaster and formerly of Wilton died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Alabaster. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Wilton and had retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class after 21 years. He had also retired from HealthSouth after 16 years as food service director.

He is survived by her wife, Mary Ann McClung Brown of Alabaster; one daughter, Sheila Ann Brown (Jeff) Barrow of Montevallo; two sons, James Robert (Cindy) Brown III and Richard Alan (Lisa) Brown, both of Alabaster; one sister, Charlotte Brown Sorbo of Waterbury, Conn.; two brothers, Kenny (Ria) Brown of Ballwin, Mo., and Eugene Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.

Service was June 16 at Bible Baptist Church, the Rev. Tom Hammett presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Rockco's directing. The family requests donations be made to the church's building fund.

LOIS ETRESS CARDEN

Shelby resident

Lois Etress Carden, 73, of Shelby died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Shelby County.

She is survived by her children, Faye (Glenn) Hawkins, Lou Frazier, Ann Horton, Lavada (Donald) Ellison, Robbie (Perry) Willis, Wendy (Donny) Johnson and Robert (Kivie) Etress; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her sister, JoAnn Grahamm; and her brothers, Mike Barnett and Dan Barnett.

Service was June 12 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. Randal Mims presiding. Burial followed in Bay Springs Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.
