Deacon John Henry Baldwin, Sr.

Deacon John Henry Baldwin, Sr. was born in Sedan, Al. to the late Elias and Fannie Baldwin on April 18, 1924.

At an early age, John Henry confessed Christ and became a member of Old Gates Baptist Church, which later became Mt. Zion Baptist Church. John Henry was Chairman of the Deacon Board for over 50 years. He was also a parliamentarian of the Mt. Zion Mission Church, a member of the Mt. Zion Bible Class, vice president of the Mt. Zion Male Chorus and advisor to the Mt. Zion Youth Crusade. John Henry sung with various groups, such as the renowned Fairfield Four, Southern Echoes Gospel, Christian Travelers and Happyland Gospel Singers.

On June 16, 1953, John Henry was wedded in Holy Matrimony to the late Lola Mae Baldwin. From this union God blessed them with nine children. He worked for over 45 years at Chatman and Hardwood.

John Henry departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004. He was preceded by his wife, Lola Mae Baldwin, a daughter, Shirley Bolar, three brothers, Reverend L.V. Baldwin, Joseph Baldwin, and Elias Baldwin, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memories five daughters; Patricia Thomas, Selma, AL, Lois (Darryl) Murphy, Bridgeport, CT, Lola (Nonnie) King, Bloomfield, JJ, Debrah Baldwin, Montclair, NJ, Ida (Christopher) Boggs, Waldorf, MD, three sons; John (Selena) Baldwin, Jr., Paterson, NJ, Bryant (Venice) Baldwin, Paterson, NJ, Kelvin (Lucinda) Baldwin, Olive Branch, MS, three sisters; Lillian A. Golden, Atmore, AL, Elnora Kennedy, Vredenburgh, AL. Vera Mae Moody, Camden, AL, five brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services were held Sat. Dec. 11, 2004 at 12pm at the Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Coy, AL. with the Rev. Willie Merrills officiating and the Rev. Alfred Mack, Presiding. Pallbearers were nephews and sons-in-law. Flower Bearers were friends of the family.

Christian Memorial Funeral Home, Camden, AL was in charge of all arrangements.

Marilyn Burston

Mrs. Marilyn Denise Burston, age 42, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 in Knollwood Hospital, Mobile, AL. She was a native of Wilcox Co., AL and a resident of Atmore, AL for many years. She graduated from Escambia County High School in 1980 and was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. She worked as a pharmacy Technician with the Atmore Rite Aid for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elijah Jackson.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Lee Burston of Atmore; one daughter, Ashley Renae Burston of Atmore; her mother, Nursaray Jackson of Atmore; five sisters, Carolyn Jackson of Atmore, Melvina Paker of Bay Minette, Delois Jackson, Ella Mae Jackson, and Jackie Huggins all of Long Island, NY; and one brother, Elijah (Barbara) Jackson, Jr. of Birmingham.

Visitation was held on Tues., Dec. 21, 2004 from 1 pm to 8 pm at Turner Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are being held on Wed., Dec. 22, 2004 at 1 pm at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Atmore. Elder Sanders Edwards is officiating. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery in Atmore. Pallbearers are friends and family.

Willie Myrtice Brown

Mrs. Willie Myrtice Brown Smith, age 93, died Thurs., Dec. 16, 2004 in Monroe County Hospital, Monroeville, AL. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and lived in Mexia. She was a member of Mexia Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leonard Smith and her son, Charles Leonard Smith, Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Willie Maude Phillips of Mexia and Mary Sawyer of Monroeville; one brother, Thomas Ledford Brown of the Old Salem Community in Monroe County; 6 grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Sat., Dec. 18 from 9:30 am to 11 am at Mexia Baptist Church. Funeral services were also held on Sat., Dec. 18, 2004 immediately following visitation at 11 am at Mexia Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Grindle, Rev. Walter Sheffield, and Rev. Hughie Denton officiating. Burial was at Mexia Cemetery.

All arrangements were handled by Monroe Chapel Funeral Home.

Jason Caraway

Mr. Jason William Caraway, age 30 of McCullough, AL died Sun., Dec. 19, 2004 in Pensacola. He was a contractor, also a model husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Atmore will be a lesser place without him and simply put, he was a true man of honor and integrity. It would be a severe understatement to say he will be truly missed.

Mr. Caraway was born in Mobile, AL, on Aug. 9, 1974 to James Larry and Bernice Tyree Caraway. Survivors are his wife, Sharon Ash Caraway of McCullough; one daughter, Ashlianne Marie Caraway of McCullough; parents, Larry and Bernice Caraway of McCullough; one sister, Mandy Murphy of Atmore; Paternal grandparents, James H. and Doris Caraway; maternal grandparents, Willard L. and Eunice Tyree all of McCullough; and, special friends Benny and Daniel Alaniz of Atmore.

Services will be Wed., Dec. 22, 2004 at 11 am from the McCullough Christian Center with Rev. Richard Daniels and Rev. Cornelius Phillips officiating. Interment will follow at McCullough Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Benny Alaniz, Brandon Snider, Robby Johnson, Mitchel Murphy, Brian Weaver and Terry Hadley.

Family received friends Tuesday evening Dec. 21, 2004 at the McCullough Christian Center from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.

Ethel Lorene Holley

Mrs. Ethel Lorene "Momma" Holley, 81, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 surrounded by her children. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. from the First Baptist Church of Century with the Bro. Gene Stokes and the Bro. Michael Wiggins officiating. Interment followed in Beulah

Cemetery with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Momma was a native of Defuniak Springs, Fla., and a longtime resident of Century. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Century. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Holley; a daughter, Brenda Strength; a grandson, Billie Strength; and a great-granddaughter, Hollie Miller.

Survivors include two sons, Rickie Holley (Sherry) of Petrey and Gary Holley (Becky) of Jay; five daughters, Barbara Dunsford (Clifton) of Century, Kathy Johnston (Sam) of Red Level, Faye Godwin (Donald) of McDavid, Tami Calloway (Freddie) of Century and Carolyn Henderieth (Junior) of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Thurman McCormick and Houston McCormick, both of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; six sisters; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

We rejoice in our tears knowing the Momma is with her lord and savior. We will miss her dearly, but look forward in confidence in sharing eternity with her. Momma taught us to live for and trust in Jesus Christ. Next to her love for Jesus, her family was considered to be her greatest treasure.

Pallbearers were Kent Calloway, Blake Calloway, Mark Dunsford, Mitch Dunsford, Michael Holley and Vincent Holley. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Johnston, David Strength, Dewayne Holley, Howard Holley and Marcus Godwin.

Francis R. Burgess

Francis R. Burgess, 79 died Wednesday, Dec. 29, in a Mobile area hospital.

He was a former resident of East Brewton and was a resident of Bay Minette at the time of his death. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Force. He owned and operated Mr. B's Quick Burger Drive-In, in Brewton, for a number of years. He attended First United Methodist Church in East Brewton.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie R. Burgess of Horseneck, Ala.; two sons, Mark Burgess of Monroeville, and Richard Burgess of Horseneck; two daughters, Gloria Dawn Fowler of Horseneck, Ala., and Crystal Flippos of Wetumpka; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver's Funeral Home with the Rev. David Taylor officiating.

Interment followed in Ft. Crawford Cemetery, Cravers Funeral home directing.

Visitation was held at Craver's Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

William Otis Lambert

Mr. William Otis Lambert, 67, died Wed., Dec. 29, 2004 at a local hospital.

Mr. Lambert was born Sept. 16, 1937 in Scranage, AL and has been a resident of Atmore for most of his life. He attended the Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Lambert.

Survivors include; four sons, Wayne Lambert of Grenada, MS, William Lambert of Atmore, AL, Joey Lambert of Benton, LA, and Earl Lambert of Atmore, AL; a daughter, Susan McGhee of Atmore; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Fri., Dec. 31, 2004 at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home. Eastside Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Wyncie Smith

Mr. Wyncie "Wimp" Smith, 52, of Atmore passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 at his residence. Services will be announced at a later date by Turner Funeral Chapel.

Claude Thompson

ATMORE - Mr. Claude Thompson, age 64 of Atmore, died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Atmore Community Hospital. Turner Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Katie Lambeth

BAY MINETTE - Mrs. Katie Lambeth, 79, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006 in Bay Minette.

Mrs. Lambeth was a native of Lottie and a resident of Perdido for most of her life. She attended the Fretwell Tabernacle Church and was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Leroy Lambeth, five sons and a daughter.

Survivors include: six sons, Roy Lambeth, Jr. of Atmore, Royce Lambeth, Eddie Lambeth, Kenny Lambeth, all of Perdido, Willie Lambeth of Bay Minette and Shannon Lambeth of Perdido; five daughters, Mildred Lister and Carolyn Stewart both of Perdido, Marilyn Capers of Davisville, Fla., Fannie Garrison of Bay Minette, and Joyce Mitchem of Perdido; 35 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, L.W. Wainwright of Pearl River, La.; and five sisters, Allene Weaver of Perdido, Clinie Stacey of Rabun, Ella Ree Gilbert of Bay Minette, Stella Hadley of Atmore and Della Johnson of Flomaton.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sister Helen Stewart and Bro. Joe Welch officiating. Burial followed at Lottie Methodist Cemetery.

Bobby Lee Smith

ATMORE - Bobby Lee Smith, 74, joined the Lord after a brief illness, April 14, 2006.

He was born July 24, 1931, in Atmore, AL, to Roy and Fannie Boggan Smith. He joined the National Guard Unit in Atmore in 1948. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving with distinction throughout the Korean and Vietnam Wars. From 1966-1969, he had the distinct honor of serving President Johnson while assigned to Camp David. As Senior NCOIC in 1970, he was selected to train equipment mechanics and operators at Courthouse Bay in Camp LeJeune's Engineering School.

Following a six year tour of duty, he was assigned to Quantico, Virginia, as NCOIC in charge of all heavy equipment testing for the Marine Corps where he remained until his retirement in 1978 at the rank of E-9, Master Gunnery Sergeant, after 28 years.

His second career brought him to a position as District Equipment Supervisor for the Whiteville District North Carolina Forest Service in 1978. For fifteen years he worked diligently at promoting and establishing a professional, conscientious and safe preventive maintenance program that was recognized among the best in the state.

He was an avid bird hunter and a faithful member of Western Prong Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and various other positions for the Lord. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, brother and a very good man who loved and served God and his country proudly throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Emory Smith, of Clarkton, NC; five daughters, Pam O. Murphy, Tampa, FL; Felicia D. Smith, Birch River, WV; Wendy S. Stone, Selma, NC; Brenda S. Langston and husband Chuck of Greer, SC; Linda S. Lennon and husband Lloyd of Western Prong, NC. Grandchildren, Megan Buning, Katie Murphy, Chip Lennon, Bobby Lennon, Andrew Stone, MacKenzie Langston; one sister, Willornease Wooten and husband Clark, Atmore, AL; one brother, Gladden Smith and wife Ruthie, Atmore, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved and devoted bird dog, Maggie.

He was laid to rest with full military honors on Monday, April 17, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Western Prong Baptist Church, Western Prong, NC.
