Howard “Pete” Farrar

ATMORE - Fielden Howard “Pete” Farrar, 88, of Atmore died Friday, May 29, 2009 in Fairhope.

He was an avid sportsman, a Game Warden with the Dept of Conservation in 1957 and was appointed as Southeastern Field Representative with the National Wildlife Federation, where he retired from. He was a native of Canoe, born on Sept. 24, 1920 to the late W.D. and Martha Kemp Dailey Farrar. Mr. Pete attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) from 1938 to 1941. He left college after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served with the Army Air Corp 13th Air Force, 18th fighter wing, 44th fighter bomber as staff Sergeant, he served in New Guinea and other duty stations within the Philippine Island, returning home after news of the allied victory spread to the field troops in the South Pacific. He was also very active in the Atmore Community. He established the First Men’s Group at the Atmore United Methodist Church, was a past president of the local Lion’s Club, served as an officer in the Christian Care Center and was involved with the Meals on Wheels program.

Two sisters, Geraldine Turner and Margaret Stallworth preceded him in death.

Survivors include, his wife, Alice Chapman Farrar and her three daughters; his son, Alvin Howard Farrar of Tallahassee, Fla. and his daughter, Martha Farrar Pickett of Fairhope; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2009 from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Reece officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill cemetery.

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of all arrangements.

John Paul Taylor Jr.

ATMORE - Mr. John Paul Taylor Jr., 63, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 at a Pensacola Hospital.

John was a native of Eufaula and a resident of Atmore for the past 39 years and attended the First Assembly of God Church. He has a masters degree and bachelor’s degree from Troy State. He retired from Escambia County High School after 35 years and taught at Jefferson Davis Community College for many years. He was also a member of the Leadership Atmore and Youth Leadership.

Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, John “Sean” (Sabina) Taylor III of Lucedale, Miss.; daughter, Andrea Taylor of Atmore; step daughter, Tierney Lancaster of Atmore; sister, Joan Harpe (Jesse) of Abbeville; two grandsons, Blake and Colby Taylor and granddaughter, Tessa Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 5, 2009 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Dollie Estelle Burkett Thortis

McDAVID, Fla. - Mrs. Dollie Estelle Burkett Thortis, 79, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at a local nursing care facility.

Mrs. Thortis was a native of Bluff Springs, Fla. and a resident of McDavid, Fla. for the past 45 years. She worked as a clerk at Cooper’s grocery store in Bratt, Fla. for 19 years.

Her husband, Bill Thortis and three grandchildren, preceded her in death.

Survivors include, her son and daughter-in-law, Ervin Thortis (Carolyn) of Christian Home; three daughters, DiAnn Stewart (Robert) of Bratt, Fla., Michelle McNabb (Lester) of Calhoun, Ga. and Sheila Lambert (Mike) of Loxley; brother, Johnny Burkett of Byrneville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Johnson officiating.

Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home. Burial followed in Christian Home Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Sam Stewart, Mike Lambert, Jason Rackard, Aaron Lambert, Mike Burkett and William Holland.

Petty Funeral Homes, LLC. was in charge of arrangements.

Melvin Ray Thompson

May 28, 2003

Melvin Ray Thompson, 49, of Perdido, died May 28.

He was a farmer, born in Atmore Aug. 1, 1953, to the late Johnnie Thomas and Etta Bell Harrison Thompson.

He is survived by five brothers; Charles Edward Smith of Montrose Bay, Johnnie O'Dell Thompson and wife Georgia of Walnut Hill, Fla., Willard Eugene Thompson and wife Ann, also of Walnut Hill, Donald Wayne Thompson and wife Mazie, of Houston, Texas, Rufus Alfred Thompson and wife Linda of Bay Minette; two sisters, Ruth Morris of Atlanta and Stella Mace and husband Phillip of Perdido; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. June 1 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Rolin officiating. Burial followed at the Sardis Baptist Cemetery. The family received friends 5-8 p.m., May 31 at the funeral home. All arrangements were handled by Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, Atmore.

Willard Eugene "Bill" Wiggins Sr.

June 5, 2003

Willard Eugene "Bill" Wiggins Sr., 67, died Thursday. A native of Frisco City, he had been a resident of Atmore since 1982. He was a retired corrections officer with 15 years of service at Fountain Prison. He attended the Atmore First Assembly of God Church and was preceded in death by his mother Katie Wiggins and first wife Shelby Jean Wiggins.

He is survived by wife Hazel E. Wiggins of Atmore, four sons; Willard Jr. of Grasonville, Md., Mark and Michael, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Keith of Balto, Md., stepson Wayland Phillips of Lafayette, La., daughter Patricia Bramble of Elkridge, Md., stepdaughter Sherri Rossi of Anaheim, Calif., sisters Luvernia Martin of Atmore and Jewel Hanks of Flomaton; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Services will be at 4 p.m. June 8 at Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. G.L.Langford and Rev. Larry Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Hertis Doyle Baggett,

June 1, 2003

Hertis Doyle Baggett, 76, of Pace, Fla., died June 1. A native of Phillipsville, Ala., he had lived in Santa Rosa County, Fla., most of his life. A member of the Pace Assembly of God, he served as an usher and was on the board of trustees of Local 366 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lonnie and Susie Baggett and two brothers, Aubrey and Leon Baggett.

He is survived by wife Greta Fretwell Baggett of Pace and two brothers, John D. and wife Mildred of Hixon, Tenn., and Otis and wife Peggy of Bay Minette. Also survived by daughter Linda Bundy and husband Stanley of Bay Minette, Sharon McGuff and husband Billy, of Bay Minette, stepchildren Donna Howell and husband Mike of Bay Minette, Steven Gerald and wife Brenda of Newport, N.C., Sandra Brannon and husband David of Orange Beach, Vicky Hawke and husband Doug of Milton, Fla., Ricky Gerald and wife Dana of Perdido. Also grandchildren Ray Bundy, Leigh Ann Lynch, Joel Clark, James McGuff, step-grandchildren Tanner Gerald, Jeremy Howell and Courtney Brannon. Great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Pharr, Paton Klopf, Adam Bundy, Victoria Clark and Blake Lynch. Numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jay Cowick, Doug Hawke, Jim McGuff, Joel Clark, Ray Bundy, Jeremy Howell, Tanner Gerald, Stevie Baggett and Donnie Baggett. Honorary pallbearers were the ushers of the Pace Assembly of God.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pace Assembly of God with Rev. Glyn Lowery officiating. Burial followed in the Serenity Gardens Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home of Pace handled all arrangements.

Earnest David Brown

Earnest David Brown of Bay Minette died Thursday at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Services are handled by Turner Funeral Chapel, Atmore.

Mrs. Ercell Rodgers of Atmore died Thursday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Services are handled by Turner Funeral Chapel, Atmore.

Estes Taylor

Mr. Estes "Buck" Taylor, 79, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2004 at a Pensacola, FL hospital.

Mr. Taylor was a native of McLain, MS and a resident of Flomaton for the past 35 years. He attended the Baptist Church.

Survivors include: five Sons, Ronald Taylor of Columbia, MS, Richard Taylor of Hattisburg, MS, Joseph Smith of Flomaton, Jeffery Taylor of Flomaton, and Michael Taylor of Flomaton; two Daughters, Geraldine Turnage of Columbia, MS and Kay Fillmore of Flomaton; 16 Grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 18, 2004 at 10:00a.m. at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.

Graveside services were held Monday, October 18, 2004 at 4:00p.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia, MS with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers were Steve Ross, Bubba Pridgen, Shane Booth, Scotty Waller, Jack Green and Curtis Moye.

Eastside Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
