Albert Mack Smith Jr.
Johnson Funeral Home, Monroeville
Albert Mack Smith Jr., 72, of Monroeville died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008 at his home.
Smith was a native of the Megargel community and had been a policeman in Monroeville. He was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Polly Smith of Monroeville; one son, Thomas J. Wallace of Millbrook; five daughters, Sheri Wallace of Monroeville, Misty Smith of Missouri, Peggy Mitchell and Linda Alpin, both of Atmore and Sharon Kay Wiggins of Davisville, Fla.; four brothers, Jacob Smith of Pensacola, Fla., Carl Smith of Uriah, Carlton Smith and Gary Smith, both of Atmore; five sisters, Luverne Evans of Brewton, Doris Lowery of Milton, Fla., Carolyn Garrett of Atmore, Marie Lyles of Bay Minette and Ruby Wilson of Perdido; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Hodges officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Gay Nell McElhaney Walker
Gay Nell McElhaney Walker, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 10 at her Waynesboro, Miss., home.
Walker was born in Atmore, Ala., and spent time living and working in communities throughout the region, including Mobile, Monroeville, Frisco City and Bay Minette and the last 39 in Waynesboro. She served with the United States Air Force, and was a surgical technician during the Korean War. In addition, she worked in civil service at the former Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile as a member of the training staff, in technical writing and as a secretary. With the closure of Brookley AFB, she took a position at Pensacola, Fla., Naval Air Station.
She attended the University of Alabama and also attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Earning a bachelor of science degree in education, she was a fixture in classrooms in Alabama and Mississippi for 32 years — teaching at every grade level in schools in Monroeville and Mobile and in Wayne County Mississippi.
She initiated the Advanced Placement program in the Waynesboro-Central High School to help students gain college credits for advanced courses taken.
Walker was a presence for many years in Waynesboro's Little Theatre productions, was involved with the Order of the Eastern Star both in Mobile and Waynesboro, and was active in the local garden club. She served as a den mother-teacher with the Cub Scouts during her time in Mobile. She was a member of Philadelphus Presbyterian Church in Wayne County. She was the author of the weekly Waynesboro community news column published for many years in The Wayne County News.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Walker Sr., of Waynesboro; her son, Rickey (Lane) Bazelle Sr.of Bay Minette; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20. Another memorial service will be held at The Church of Christ on West First Street in Bay Minette at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South, P.O. Box 9693, Mobile, AL 36691 or call 251-660-5661; or to the Order of the Eastern Star in supporting ESTARL ministerial students and memorial payment to be made to O.E.S. and mailed to Dorothy Parker, 1301 Walnut Street, Waynesboro, MS 39367-2231.

Clifton Eugene “Gene” Buckhault
Petty Eastside Chapel, Atmore
Clifton Eugene “Gene” Buckhault, 59, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at a Pensacola, Fla. hospital.
Buckhault was a native of Atmore and a lifelong resident of Little Rock, Ala. He worked at Scott Paper Company for 30 years, owned and operated G.B. Trucking Company and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Buckhault; two sons, Johnnie Eugene (Shanna) Buckhault and Clifton Dewayne Buckhault, both of Little Rock; two daughters, Veronica (Guy) Spoon of Little Rock and Jo Le An (Al) Roberts of Neely, Miss.; one brother, Billy Ray (Cheryl) Buckhault of Elseanor; a sister, Jerald Dean (Hubert) Reed of Bay Minette; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Charles McGee officiating. Burial followed at Miller Cemetery.

Robert Clyde Casey
Monroe Chapel Funeral Home, Monroeville
Robert Clyde Casey, 86, of Excel died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Atmore Community Hospital.
Casey, a former resident of Ft. Worth, Texas, lived in Excel for many years and owned and operated a welding shop. He also worked at Vanity Fair for several years.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Casey.
Survivors include three sons, Ricky (Sissy) Casey of Excel and Mike (Carol) Casey and Truman Casey, both of Mexia; three daughters, Robbie (Ronnie) Simpson of Excel, Elaine (Harry) Lowery of the Spring Hill Community and Sheila Casey of Dauphin Island; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Excel Cemetery.

Barbara Jean Bullard Dailey
Jones Unity Funeral Home, Monroeville
Barbara Jean Bullard Dailey, 60, of Frisco City died last Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Monroe County Hospital.
Dailey was a native and lifelong resident of Monroe County and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church at Claiborne.
Survivors include a companion, Charles Dean of Frisco City; four sons, Anthony Bullard and Michael Dailey, both of Brewton, Arthur Dailey of Monroeville and Timothy Dailey of Frisco City; one daughter, Ethel Marie Dailey of Frisco City; three brothers, Robert Bullard and Ernest Bullard, both of Monroeville, and Eddie Bullard of Frisco City; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Matthew Davis officiating. Burial followed in the McConnico Cemetery.

Ruby Pearl Edwards
Penn’s Funeral Home, Monroeville
Ruby Pearl Edwards, 64, of Finchburg died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at Monroe County Hospital.
Edwards was a native of Hybart and lived all her life in Monroe County. She worked at LandLover’s in Frisco City and D.J.’s Apparel in Camden until her health failed. She was a member of Call to Life Apostolic Church in Monroeville.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Edwards of Perdue Hill, Timothy Edwards of Foley and Ronnie Edwards and Donnie Edwards, both of Monroeville; two daughters, Angela Scott of Monroeville and Marrion Harris of Meridian, Miss.; two brothers, Leroy Finklea of Frisco City and Bill Finklea of Detroit, Mich.; four sisters, Bobbie Coleman of Frisco City, Royal Green of Beatrice, Channie Davis of Thomasville and Annie Mae Dees of Detroit; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Penn’s Chapel. Services will be Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at Penn’s Funeral Home with Pastor Gerald Leggett officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery at Finchburg.

Mildred B. Fryer
Penn’ Funeral Home, Monroeville
Mildred B. Fryer, 88, of Beatrice died last Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at Monroe Manor Nursing Home.
Fryer was a native of Monroeville and lived most of her life in Monroe County. She was a homemaker and a member of Cathedral of Faith Christian Center in Beatrice.
Survivors include one sister, Barbara Ann Richardson-Nelson of Detroit; six grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today (Thursday) at Cathedral of Faith Christian Center with Apostle Reginald Stallworth officiating. Burial will follow in New Birth Pentecostal Church’s cemetery in Monroeville.

Mary Merlene Hamrac
Cope Funeral Home, Evergreen
Mary Merlene Hamrac, 85, of Evergreen died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at her home.
Hamrac was a native of Rose Hill and was a seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Garrett Hamrac, and one son, Harley Jay Hamrac.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Cook of Evergreen and Patsy Stafford of Frisco City; a daughter-in-law, Betty Hamrac of McKenzie; one sister, Inez Hardee of Evergreen; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Cope Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed in the Lyeffion Cemetery.

Sam Montgomery
Jones Unity Funeral Home, Monroeville
Sam Montgomery, 91, of Chestnut died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.
Montgomery was a native and lifelong resident of Chestnut, and retired from Scott Plywood Company. He was a member of and served on the deacon board and as Sunday School superintendent at St. Matthews Baptist Church at Chestnut.
Survivors include three sons, Joe (Mamie) Montgomery of New York City, John Montgomery of Rocky Mountain, N.C. and Isaac (Beverly) Montgomery of Kileen, Texas; seven daughters, Mary (William) Toler, Flora (Augusta) Salter and Alberta (Willie) Marshall, all of Pensacola, Margaret Montgomery, Gertrude Montgomery and Mary Francis Montgomery, all of New York City, and Dorothy McCants of Brewton; one sister, Corrie Baldwin of Washington; 18 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthews Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Reginald E. Salter
Johnson Funeral Home, Monroeville
Reginald E. Salter, 83, of Monroeville died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at his home.
Salter was a native of Conecuh County and had lived in Monroeville for most of his life. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a retired salesman for Tom’s Peanuts for 66 years.
Survivors include one son, Ricky Salter of Monroeville; one daughter, Rita S. Murrell of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Terry Hardin and Rev. Wayne McMillian officiating. Burial followed in Pineville Cemetery in Monroeville.

Charles Burke Atkins
Monroe Chapel, Frisco City
Charles Burke Atkins, 74, of the Old Salem Community died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at his home.
Atkins had lived most of his life in Monroe County. He was a member of Old Salem Baptist Church and the American Legion. He was a heavy equipment operator.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Jean Atkins and his sister, Frances Kelly.
Survivors include his son, Ray (Sandra) Atkins of the Old Salem Community; three brothers, Rollan Sheffield of the Old Salem Community, Bobby Atkins of Corpus Christi, Texas and Greg Atkins of Texas; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Johnson and Rev. Keith Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Old Salem Cemetery in the Old Salem Community.
