Robert D. Morrison

Funeral for Robert Daniel Morrison, who died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at his home, was held Wednesday, March 19. The 10 a.m. service was held at First United Methodist Church in Moulton with the Rev. Carl Long officiating.

A graveside service was held at Valhalla Cemetery in Birmingham.

He was born in Jefferson County to W.D. and Virginia Morrison. Mr. Morrison was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Morrison; three daughters, Tricia Morrison Kiedinger of Birmingham, Patricia Thompson of Mount Hope and Nita Hammer of Wayne, Mich.; his mother, Virginia Morrison of Birmingham; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Arthur Sanderson, Richard Proctor, Mike Littrell, Scott Stone, Teddy Owens and Don White.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church organ fund.

Bernice Allyne Shields

79, homemaker, Mount Hope

Funeral for Bernice Shields was held Tuesday, March 18, 2 p.m., at Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Edward Tollison officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Shields died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at her home.

She was a native of Lawrence County. Her parents were Claude and Jewell White. She was the widow of William Howard Shields.

Survivors include four sons, Bobby Zane Shields, Autry Shields and Jimmy Steven Shields, all of Mount Hope and Jerry Roger Shields of Phil Campbell; one daughter, Derrel Vearl Boyles of Mount Hope; one brother, Bud White of Sheffield; six sisters, Alice Martin of Mount Hope, Adrian Henry of Michigan, Kitty Hall of Decatur and Vivian Keenum, Joy Trousdale and Charlene Little, all of Sheffield; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ricky Boyles, Billy Boyles, Timmy Shields, Keith Shields, Steven Shields and Marcus Shields.

Ina Durham

84, homemaker, Town Creek

Funeral for Ina Durham was held Friday, March 14, 2 p.m., at Elliott Funeral Home with the Revs. Wayne Dotson and Buddy Simmons officiating.

Burial was in the Graham Cemetery.

She was born in Lawrence County to Cleveland and Lucy Terry Jacobs.

Mrs. Durham is survived by one son, Carl Martin of Lafayette, Ind.; two daughters, Opal Tidwell of Town Creek and Shelby Winchester of Huntsville; one sister, Lomeda Livingston of Moulton; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wayne Lovett, Jason Green, Gerrald Green, Jeff Tolbert, Johnny Tidwell, Paul Smith and David Wade Martin.

Frederick "Fred" Mason

34, General Electric machine operator, North Courtland

Frederick "Fred" Mason died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Colbert County.

The funeral was held Wednesday, March 12, 1 p.m., at North Alabama Baptist Academy with the Rev. Edgar Shaw officiating.

Burial was in the Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Town Creek with Thompson and Son Funeral of Tuscumbia directing.

He was born in Lawrence County, was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County and was a graduate of Courtland High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick Omar Mason of Town Creek and Omante Jackson of Tuscumbia; two daughters, Jannett Nichole Jones of Town Creek and Quiata Lyle of Decatur; his mother, Daisella Mason of North Courtland; eight brothers, Ronnie Mason, Michael Mason, Timothy Mason and Carnal Birt Jr., all of Hillsboro and Willie Edward Birt of Athens; five sisters, Martha Moody, Dorothy Madry and Annette Davis, all of Decatur and Teresa Bailey and Birdester Simpson, both of Hillsboro; his stepmother, Mary Ella Birt-Gibson of Hillsboro; and his grandmother, Clara Bowling of Hillsboro.

Members of the Courtland High School class of 1982 were the pallbearers.

Roger Dale Holloway

34, carpet layer, Hockley, Texas

Funeral for Roger Dale Holloway was held Monday, March 17, 2 p.n., at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Carvelle officiating.

Burial was in the Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Holloway died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in Texas.

He is survived by one son, Roger Dale Holloway Jr. of Hockley; his parents, Hank and Ann Daniel of Fort Payne; one brother, Bill Holloway of Moulton; one sister, Annette Tolbert of Cullman; and three stepbrothers, Steve Brannon of Brunswick, Ga., Phillip Brannon and Jeff Brannon, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Friends were the pallbearers.

Julius Ellis Hollis

51, 3M retire, Decatur

Funeral for Julius Ellis Hollis was held Monday, March 17, 11 a.m., at Lawrence Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Chris Byrd officiating.

Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery.

Mr. Hollis died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at Parkway Medical Center.

He was born in Lawrence County.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hollis; two sons, Geary Hollis of Moulton and Calvin Hollis of Decatur; three daughters, Rolonda Goode, Julie McCaghren and Rachel Reynolds, all of Moulton; five sisters, Audrey Smith of Town Creek, Opal McLemore, Dorothy Grimes, Barbara Brown and Joann Woodard, all of Moulton; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gene Brown, Ken Hollis, Mark Pitt, Jeremy Hollis, Q.C. Terry and Kevin McLemore.

Terrell Montez Swoopes

19, gymnastics instructor, Trinity

Funeral for Terrell Montez Swoopes was held Wednesday, March 19, 1 p.m., at Wheeler Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with George Sawyer and Patrick Schatzline officiating.

Burial was in the Andrew Garth Cemetery with Sharpley Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Swoopes died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.

He was born in Decatur. Mr. Swoopes was a 1995 graduate of Austin High School, a National Cheerleader Association All-American cheerleader, a Universal Cheerleader Association All-Star cheerleader and Jump-off champion. He taught gymnastics in Decatur.

He is survived by his mother, Jean Swoopes Fuqua of Trinity; his father, Anthony Clay of Decatur; two brothers, Purez Swoopes and Dezomone Swoopes, both of Trinity; three sisters, Shaney Jackson and Danna Jackson, both of San Diego, Calif. And Carolyn Clay of Nashville; his stepfather, S.T. Fuqua of Trinity; two grandfathers, Robert Swoopes Jr. Of Courtland and Leroy Ballentine Jr. Of Augusta, Ga.; and his great-grandmother, Eunice Ballentine of Decatur.

Cindy L. Jackson

19, student, Moulton

Funeral for Cindy LaShawn Jackson, who died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at University Hospital in Birmingham, was held Sunday, March 23, at Moulton Heights Church of Christ in Decatur. The 1 p.m. service was officiated by Harold Gilmore.

Burial was in the Moulton Memory Gardens with Thompson and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Ms. Jackson was born in Morgan County. She was a graduate of Lawrence County High School, where she served as Color Guard Captain in the band and played varsity basketball. Ms. Jackson was attending Alabama A&M University, where she was a member of the band.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Louise Jackson of Moulton; three brothers, James F. Jackson of Huntsville, Marvin L. Jackson of Moulton and Curtis M. Jackson of Decatur; one sister, Ava Carlisle of Decatur; and her grandfather, Fernando Jackson of Inkster, Mich.

Members of the A&M University band and football team were the pallbearers.

Sandra Thomas

56, homemaker, Town Creek

Funeral for Sandra Louise Thomas was held Saturday, march 22, 2 p.m., at Elliott Funeral Home with Hollis Rutherford officiating.

Burial was in the Chalybeate Baptist Cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence.

She was born in Indiana and was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Thomas; one son, Danny Thomas of Athens; two daughters, Karen Drane of Falkville and Sue Manley of Decatur; one brother, Ronnie Miller of Kentucky; two sisters, Donna Mandrell of Kentucky and Carol Stacey of Indiana; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Thomas, Dalton Thomas, Clayton Thomas, Mitchell Drane, Ronnie Miller and John Mann.

Nola Jane Simmons Wood

81, homemaker, Town Creek

A graveside service was held for Nola Jane Simmons Wood on Saturday, March 22, 11 a.m., at Elmwood Cemetery with Elmer Fowler and Phil Russell officiating and Elliott Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Wood died Friday, March 21, 1997, at her home.

She was born in Lawrence County.

Survivors include one son, James Wood of Town Creek; one daughter, Faye Hill of Town Creek; one sister, Katie Lee Bankston of Hartselle; and four grandchildren.

Grandsons and nephews were the pallbearers.
