DOSS

Services for Martha Winnie Doss, 101, will be at 11 a.m. today at Curtis and Son North Chapel in Sylacauga. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Revs. David Mann and Brandon Strickland officiated.

Mrs. Doss died Aug. 4 at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Sandy Doss of Anniston and three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carrie and Blenard Miller of Alpine, Nellie Ruth Chappell of Anniston and Gertrude and Bill Murphy of Sycamore.

Pallbearers will be great-grandsons.

Her husband George Doss, grandson Danny Miller and great-granddaughter Laura Hardy preceded Mrs. Doss in death. Mrs. Doss was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Childersburg.

She enjoyed helping others, spending time with her family and friends and crocheting. She liked the piano and playing and listening to gospel music.

SMALLWOOD

Services for Louie Olen Smallwood, 73, were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, in the chapel of K.L. Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jack Morgan officiated. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery.

Mr. Smallwood died July 28 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center in Gadsden.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Smallwood of Jacksonville; a son, Barry Smallwood and his companion, Christine Gehlker of Jacksonville; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, William “Bud” and Peggy Smallwood of Geraldine, Wilmer Smallwood of Jacksonville and Jim L. and Nadia Smallwood of Panama City, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Paul Fleming of Ohatchee and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Tim Smallwood, Jason Smallwood, Phillip Walker, James Johnson, Craig Gaddy and Jonathan Gaddy, Wayne Glass and Jim Partridge. Honorary pallbearer was Alden Boozer.

His parents Carl and Lela Smallwood and three sisters Francis Moore, Shirley Fleming and Mildred Davis preceded him in death. Mr. Smallwood was retired from the Calhoun County Road Department.

STEINBROOK

Services for Laura Lee Nelson Steinbrook, 88, were at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Greg Walker officiated. Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery in Munford.

Mrs. Steinbrook died Aug. 1 at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Dianne Huebner of Sun Prairie, Wisc., and Debbie Baldwin of Anniston, a son, Jimmy Nelson of Munford; eight grandchildren, Brian Nelson, Kaye O’Connor and Tamara Bean all of Munford, Darrell Nelson of Jacksonville, Zachary Armstrong, Aarron Huebner of Sun Prairie, Anthony Baldwin of Gaylesville and Regina Reynolds of Leesburg; five great-grandchildren, Jessica O’Connor, Thomas O’Connor, Louisa Nelson and Victoria Nelson all of Munford and Gatlin Nelson of Jacksonville and caregivers Debbie Baldwin, Jeff Smith and Allan Gill all of Anniston.

Mrs. Steinbrook was a native of Anniston. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Weaver. Her husbands Willie Nelson and Harley Steinbrook preceded her in death.

BAIN

Services for Lonniel Warren “L.W.” Bain, 89, were at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home and Crematory. Jeff Smith, Dr. C. O. Grinstead and Rev. David Bain officiated. Burial was in Dogwood Trails Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bain died Aug. 8 at his residence.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jean Munroe Bain; four children and their spouses, David and Debbie Bain of Anniston, Paul and Nancy Bain, Phil and Charlene Bain, and Martha and Rob Kimbrough all of Oxford; grandchildren, Jason and Corrie Bain, of Chesapeake, Va., Adam and Erika Bain, of Woodstock, Ga., Daniel and Joni Bain, of Buckner, Mo., Kristen Bain, of Anniston, Amy and Matt Johnson, Jeff Bain, Stephanie Bain, Emily Bain and Robby Kimbrough, all of Oxford, Livi and Micah Junior, of Tuscaloosa; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Albert Bain of White Plains and Howard Bain of Anniston; a sister, Edna Arms of Jacksonville; a brother-in-law and his wife, Tommy and Mildred Munroe of Alexandria; a caregiver, Mary Robinson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bain was a resident of Oxford and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Oxford. He was an independent truck driver for over 32 years and a veteran of World War II.

KADLE

Services for Elvin S. Kadle, Jr., 81, will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Revs. Jerry Pike and Phillip King will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Kadle died Aug. 11 at his residence.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce Kadle; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Kadle and Judy and Rick Goodwin; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Pamela Kadle; two sisters, Margie McCool and Jenny Faye Parrish; four grandchildren, Chad and Neil Goodwin and Jacob and Silas Kadle; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Paul Kadle, David Dilleshaw, Vann Walker, Tom Kilgore, P.D. Pritchett and Lacy Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and men of Bonnie Brook Baptist Church.

His parents Elvin S. Kadle, Sr. and Bama Kadle Mr. Kadle in death. He was an avid gardener and storyteller and liked to travel.

He was a 50-year plus member of Hiram Lodge No. 42 F&AM. He enjoyed being with his family and friends.

KIMBLE

Services for Inez Kimble, 93, were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Ervin Funeral Chapel of Chimes. Rev. Billy Springer officiated. Burial was in Eden Hills Cemetery.

Mrs. Kimble died Aug. 4 at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston.

Survivors include four daughters and two sons-in-law, Hazel Kimble, Gloria Kimble, Pearl and Horace Williams and Dorothy and Curtis Bradford; a sister, Sudie Heard; a brother and sister-in-law, Hugo and Ethel Sims; a sister-in-law, Vera Kimble-Coleman;10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Her parents, three sisters, a brother. a daughter Lottie Kimble-Lowery, three grandchildren Petty Officer 1st Class Fred Maffett, Army Maj. Dwayne Williams and Reba Joyce Kimble preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church.

PHILLIPS

Services for Margie Phillips, 76, of Piedmont will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in the chapel of Gray Brown Service Mortuary. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips died Aug. 9 at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Bernice and Homer Bragg of Weaver and Darlene Phillips of Piedmont; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Cecil Lamar and Lorie Phillips of Jacksonville and Ricky Phillips, of Piedmont; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Elsie Marie and Paul Harbin and Gloria Jones all of Talladega; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gray and Mary Jones of North Carolina and Bobby and Carolyn Jones of Moody and several nieces and nephews.

Her daughter Brenda Phillips Owens preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

BELL

Services for Michael Louis Bell, 28, of Troy, formerly of Calhoun County, will be at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel. Rev. Dr. Robert Tant will officiate. Burial will be in Seven Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Bell died Aug. 17 in Luverne.

Survivors include his wife, DeAnna Payne Bell of Troy; his parents, Louis and Shirley Bell of Ohatchee; a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila Joy and Bryan Feazell of Wellington; his in-laws, John and Janese Payne of Alexandria; two sisters-in-law, Katie and Lacey Payne; two nephews, Heath and Lucas Feazell and a niece, Savannah Feazell.

Pallbearers will be Mark Wallace, Ben Cunningham, Gary Lewis, Allen Wright, Tom Lowry and Shane Adrian.

Mr. Bell was a 1997 graduate of Alexandria High School. In 2001, he graduated from Jacksonville State University with a degree in music and was a member of the Marching Southerners. He received his master’s from Troy University and was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was employed with Kaplan University.

Memorial donations can be made to the JSU Foundation on behalf of the Marching Southerners, 700 Pelham Road, N., Jacksonville 36265.

BOOZER

Graveside services for Walter Raleigh Boozer, Sr., 79, were at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Rabbittown Cemetery. Rev. Rick McClain officiated. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center directed.

Mr. Boozer died Aug. 12 at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife Nellie Dean Boozer; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tina and Ernist Carter and Vivian Waits; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Clauida Boozer, Jr. and Lonnie and Amy Boozer; a sister, Irene West; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Lonnie Boozer, Mark Boozer, Mark Boozer, Jr., JoVante’ Boozer and Walter Raleigh Boozer, Jr.

His first wife Jenice Boozer, his parents, Walter P. and Cassie (Motes) Boozer, two brothers Oscar Boozer and Clay Boozer and three sisters Cleo Dean, Ammi Walley and Martha Leona “Jean” Culp preceded him in death.

Mr. Boozer enjoyed sports and especially liked Ohio State and Jacksonville State University. He was born and reared in Jacksonville and attended Talladega School for the Deaf. He retired from the post office in Columbus.

HOBBS

Memorial services for John T. Hobbs Jr., 81, of Oak Level were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at First Baptist Church. Derek Staples and Rev. Jim Wilson officiated. Andy Bumpus will provided the music.

Mr. Hobbs died Aug. 11 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston after a short illness.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tom and Cheryl Hobbs of Birmingham, Rick and Gina Hobbs of Memphis, Tenn., Mike Hobbs of Johnson City, Tenn., and Chris and Lauren Hobbs of Jacksonville; a step son, Bill Duncan of Oak Level; three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Pauline Hobbs, Gene and Ruth Hobbs and Harold and Dorothy Hobbs all of Calhoun County; 13 grandchildren, Jade, Jason, Mitchell, Kyle, Jon, Jordan, Alex, Cameron, Reid, Lexie, Jack, Hope, and Joshua; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hobbs was a Wilsonville native, born Aug. 4, 1927, to John Thompson Hobbs Sr., and Mary Pluma Vansant Hobbs. After graduating from Jacksonville High School in 1946, he served in the United States Air Force and took part in the Berlin Airlift in 1949 as a member of a unit providing radar direction for Allied planes that brought crucial supplies to the embattled citizens of Berlin. He later earned a bachelor’s in mathematics and history from Jacksonville State University. A 35-year career with the United States Postal Service followed. He designed and built their home in rural Cleburne County at Oak Level. In addition to using beams that he hand-hewed with his grandfather’s century-old foot ax, he also fashioned a fireplace from large rocks he gathered by hand from the mountains of Borden Springs. It took him seven years to build it.
