REAVES
04-30-2008

Services for Nettie V. Reaves, 74, were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the chapel of K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Rev. Jonathan Pate officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Reaves died April 26 at her residence.

Survivors include her husband, Curtis Reaves; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane and Danny Malsy of Jacksonville; Becky Price of Jacksonville and Shirley and Perre Ward of Saks; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Mary Lee Reaves of Glencoe, Michael and Jeannie Reaves of Jacksonville and Darryl and Rhonda Reaves of Jacksonville; a sister, Ruth Smith of Jacksonville; a brother, Gene Hooks of Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Chad Turner, Jeff Hooks, Billy Goble, Sr., Billy Goble, Jr., Dustin Myers, and Jimmy Pate.

Mrs. Reaves was a Christian.

SCRUGGS
04-30-2008

Graveside services for Julie Andrews Scruggs, 50, of Shelby County were at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Southern Heritage cemetery in Pelham. A memorial service was at noon at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Riverchase. Dr. Chris DeGreen officiated. Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham directed.

Mrs. Scruggs died April 15.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Scruggs; her parents, Robert “Buddy” and Geraldine Andrews of Arab, formerly of Jacksonville; a son, Brian Matthew Johnson; two daughters, Bethany Kay Johnson and Jamie Leigh Johnson; two step sons, Joseph Andrew Scruggs and Timothy Ryan Scruggs; a brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Joan Andrews; a sister and brother-in-law, Kay and David Elwell and five nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Scruggs was employed as a computer programmer at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Alabama. She graduated in the top of her class at Jacksonville State University with a bachelor’s degree. Her double major was in computer science and math.

She was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Riverchase and was a supporter of her children’s activities at Jefferson State Community College, Oak Mountain High School and Oak Mountain Middle School.

BRYANT

Memorial services for Donald Philip “Donnie” Bryant, 28, of Albertville were at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Carr’s Chapel-in-the-Pines. His grandfather Philip Black officiated.

Mr. Bryant died April 28 in Guntersville.

Survivors include his wife, Ashley Bryant of Albertville; his father, Don Bryant of Anniston; his mother, Catherine Black of Albertville; a sister, Destin Black of Florida; his father-in-law, David Whisenhunt of Tennessee; and his mother-in-law, Janie Whisenhunt of Jacksonville.

HOGUE

Services for Betty Hogue, 78, of Tuscaloosa were at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home. Dr. Herbert Thomas officiated. Burial was in Memory Hill Gardens.

Mrs. Hogue died April 29 her home.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Phillip Willis of Bessemer; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglass E. and Marleni Hogue Jr. of Jacksonville; a sister, Loraine Howard of Ohatchee and two grandchildren, Kevin Hogue of Piedmont, and Kristi Mowlin of Hamilton.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Circlewood Baptist Church, former members of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Clara Blackman, No. 167 OES doctors and staff of DCH Cancer Treatment Center, Hospice of West Alabama, doctors Leonard W. Jones III, Howard J. Falgout, A. George Kudirka, and Robert Wright, Doris Woodard, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Junkin, U and A Gate Management personnel, and U of A.

Her parents Clarence Bentley and Bertha Bentley, a daughter Donna Elaine Hogue, a son John Keith Hogue and her husband Douglas E. Hogue preceded her in death.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of West Alabama and American Cancer Society.

LLOYD

Graveside services for Jennifer Lloyd, 29, of Anniston were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Eastaboga Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Ryan Brice officiated. Chapel Hill Funeral Home directed.

Mrs. Lloyd died May 3 at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Corky Lloyd of Anniston; her mother, Marquita Worthy and step-father Shane Worthy of Pleasant Valley; her brother, T.D. Adcock of Anniston; grandparents, Norma Jean and Robert Williams of Eastaboga and Mildred and Freddie Pierce of Munford; her mother and father-in-law, Teresa and Ralph Lloyd; her sister-in-law Cristy Brice and her husband, Ryan all of Anniston; her nephew, Brody Brice, and cousin Brooklyn Pitts.

Mrs. Lloyd was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She is a 1996 graduate of Wellborn High School. Her brother Bradley Steward preceded her in death.

MARTIN

Services for Rev. James H. Martin, Th.D., 77, were at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home. Revs. Jonathan Foster, Hollis Martin and James Martin, Jr. officiated. Burial was in Chosea Springs Cemetery.

Rev. Martin died April 28 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sara Martin; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Ken Foster of Griffin, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Dee Martin Jr. of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Jonathan Foster, Andrew Foster and his wife Erika, Judson Martin, Ashley Martin and Roseanna Martin; his mother, Lillian Martin Williams of Piedmont; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Dallas Gambrell and Linda and Art Ingram all of Piedmont; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Hollis and Janice Martin, Johnny Martin and Joey and Sandy Martin all of Piedmont; a sister-in-law, Charlene Creel and her husband Charles, of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Andrew Foster, Johnny Martin, Joey Martin, Eddie Martin, Jerry Anderson and Art Ingram.

Rev. Martin was a Jacksonville native and had been a Piedmont resident for several years. He served as bishop of the Congregational Holiness Church for eight years, pastored several churches in Alabama and Georgia and was currently serving as pastor at Community Congregational Holiness Church. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Antietam. His father Rev. Joe Martin preceded him in death.

McFALL

Services for Vivian Hayvene Woods McFall, 66, of Douglas, Ga., were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home. Revs. Lynn Polk and Tim Blanton officiated. Burial was in Douglas City Cemetery. Sims Funeral Home directed.

Mrs. McFall died May 3 at her home after an extended illness.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Chris Gaines of Douglas; a son, David McFall of Douglas; a granddaughter, Leah Gaines of Douglas; two sisters, Hazel Odgen of Weaver and Helen Cunningham of Dinwiddie, Va., and two caregivers, Geraldine McReady and Susan Walker.

Pallbearers were Donald Carver, John Sweat, Gerald Guthrie, Ronnie Anderson Bob Moore, Lance Knight, Tim White and Logan Knight. Honorary pallbearers were Pat Baker, Joyce Taylor, Lourie Tanner, Dana Harper, Dale Batten, Jackie Wilson and members of the Bethany Hospice.

Mrs. McFall was a native of Calhoun County. She was born April 15, 1942, daughter of the late James Earl and Vivian Tyson Blaylock Woods. She was a city clerk with the City of Douglas from 1972-2002. Her husband Hugh McFall and brothers Herbert Woods, Hubert Woods and Hobert Woods preceded her in death.

NEWELL

Services for Helen F. Newell, 86, of Oxford, were at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at Anniston Funeral Service Chapel. Rev. Jeffrey Williams officiated. Burial was in Oxford Memorial Gardens. Anniston Funeral Service directed.

Mrs. Newell died April 30 at Cleburne County Nursing Home.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Sharon Newell of Jacksonville; five daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Key, Brenda Payton, Darlene and Billy Brooks, Jimmie Bass and Edna Newell, all of Oxford; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mark Payton, Randy Payton, Dustin Newell, Mike Sears, Jeffrey Newell, Cody Payton, Corey Sears, and Skylar Payton. Honorary were Dakota Payton and Bradley Newell.

Mrs. Newell was a native of Oxford and was a member of the Hunter Street Methodist Church.

PARRIS

Services for Annie L. Parris, 75, will be at 2 p.m. today at Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness Church. Revs. Leslee Bailey and Phillip Parris will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center will direct.

Mrs. Parris died Monday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center

Survivors include her husband, Carry G. Parris of Jacksonville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and LaFayette Brown and Sandra Myers of Jacksonville; a son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Brenda Parris of Jacksonville; a brother, Dewey Lowman of Albertville; four grandchildren, Jerred Brown and his wife Keely, of Dothan, Ben Myers, Drew Myers and Megan Parris and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be James Hardy, Leon Hardy, Richard Hardy, Bobby Lowman, Woody Lowman and Clarence Hulsey.

Mrs. Parris was a member of Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness Church and was the lead singer of the Parris Family.

ROGERS

Graveside services for Sybil I. Rogers, 72, were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Hillcrest Cemetery. Folsom Funeral Home directed.

THORNTON

Services for Katie Jane Thornton, 89, of Webster’s Chapel were at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Crestwood Chapel in Gadsden. Revs. Emmett Roper, Gene Burgess and Michael Howard officiated. Burial was in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home directed.

Mrs. Thornton died May 1.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Bobbie Thornton and James E. and Shirley Thornton of Webster’s Chapel; a daughter-in-law, Judith Thornton of Webster’s Chapel; eight grandchildren, Lesa Lambert and her husband Mike, Rhonda Miles and her husband David, Bryon Thornton and his wife Betty, Timothy Thornton, Aubrey Thornton and his wife April, Tracy Phillips and her husband Doug, Adam Thornton and his wife Christie, and Melissa Thornton; 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thornton was a native of Talladega County and had been a resident of the Webster’s Chapel community for the past 62 years.

She was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and a homemaker. Her husband Ernest Lee Thornton Sr. and her son Ernest Lee Thornton Jr. preceded her in death.
