Gene Clarke
(Died May 5, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Gene Clarke, age 63 of Heflin will be Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Ted Embry and Rev. Don Henley officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Clarke was born in Clay County but had lived most of his life in Clay, Cleburne Counties, and the surrounding area. He graduated from Lineville High School and attended Jacksonville State University, he was the former owner/operator of Clarkes Grocery and Produce in Chulafinnee, Gene also played as an extra in the Travis Tritt video; “Here’s a Quarter Call Someone Who Cares” and also in two movies filmed in Atlanta.

He is survived by five daughters: Melissa Clarke of Roanoke, Helen Clarke of Oxford, Audrey Clarke of Anniston, Christy Runfola of Mt. Zion, GA and Jennifer Paige Clarke of Anniston; one son, David Clarke of Anniston; one sister, Sue Clarke of Oxford; two brothers: Jimmy Clarke (Lou) and Byron Clarke (Judy) all of Delta plus eight grandchildren. Mr. Clarke was preceded in death by his parents Eulas Fletcher Clarke and Audrey Thelma Rogers Clarke and two brothers: Butch and Bill Clarke.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M.

Willard Holloway
(Died May 14, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Funeral services for Willard Holloway, age 77 of Mellow Valley, will be Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Harvest Time Tabernacle with Bro. Barry Gautreaux and Bro. Daniel Sweeney officiating. Burial will follow in the New Harmony Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Holloway passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2011 at his residence. A Randolph County native and former resident of Louisiana, he had moved to Clay County in 1982, where he lived the rest of his life. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Holloway had worked for over 28 years as a cotton gin operator, was also a mechanic and had operated the Clay County Feed Mill. He also served as pastor at the Harvest Time Tabernacle.

Mr. Holloway is survived by one daughter, Patricia Messer (David) of Long Pine, LA; three sons: Robert “Red” Holloway (Sheryl), Phillip Holloway (Bonetta) and Paul Holloway (Bama), all of Mellow Valley; two sisters: Mary Brady and Ellen Brady, both of Lecompte, LA plus 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Holloway and one son, Frank Holloway.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Holloway, Michael Holloway, Phillip Paul Holloway, Nathan Messer, Justin Wilson and Frank Messer.

The family will receive friends at the Harvest Time Tabernacle, located at 51371 Hwy 49 in Mellow Valley, on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 4:30 P.M. until service time on Monday.

Junie Mae "Faye" Kerley
(Died May 14, 2011)

Funeral services for Junie Mae “Faye” Kerley, age 73 of Lineville, will be Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Lineville with Rev. Shirleen Harvey and Rev. Michael Strong officiating. Burial will follow in the Lineville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Kerley passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham. A Shelby County native, Faye had lived most of her life in Clay County. She had served for over 30 years as the Day Care Director for the Lineville Child Development Center and was also on the Clay County Board of Registrars. The valedictorian of her graduating class at Clay County Training School, Mrs. Kerley also attended Southern Union State Community College.

Faye is survived by her husband, James I. Kerley Jr. of Lineville; four daughters: Denise Melton of Fairfield, Nina Bell (Wilbur) of Ashland, Pamela Smith (Terry) of Anniston and Karen Kerley of Calera; three sons: Marcus Kerley of Anniston, Timothy Kerley (Niki) of Lineville and Sidney Kerley of Chicago, IL; four sisters: Brenda Brown (Enoch) of Lumberton, NC, Ann Wood of Anniston, Mary Hall of Anniston, and Ola Boykin (Mamon “Butch”) of Los Angeles, CA; four brothers; Walter Kidd Sr. (Edna Fay) of Lineville, Clavelle Kidd (Katie) of Anniston, Ricky Kidd (Charlene) of Lineville and Barry Kidd (Onzell) of Manchester, GA plus eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Chris Wood, Elijah Wood Jr., Cornelius Wood, Cedric Williams, Justin Williams, Ricky Kidd and Walter Kidd Jr.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. and until one hour prior to service time on Wednesday. Mrs. Kerley will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Lela Evelyn Cooper
(Died May 15, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Lela Evelyn Cooper, age 91 of Lineville, will be Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Bellview Baptist Church with Rev. Buford Gaines and Rev. Mark Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Bellview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Cooper passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Lineville Health & Rehabilitation Center. A native and lifelong resident of Clay County, she had worked for a number of years as a seamstress for Higgins Slacks Manufacturing. Mrs. Cooper was also a member of Bellview Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons: Dan Cooper (Joyce) of Oxford and Clarence Ivey of Fyffe; three sisters: Catherine Atkins of Lineville, Ruth Buckhannan of Delta and Mildred Breedlove (Dan) of Tuscaloosa; two brothers: David Parker (Janice) of Gary, IN and Rev. Archie Parker of Edwardsville; two daughters-in-law: Carolyn Ivey of Weaver and Linda Birchfield of Fruithurst plus seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her parents: Rev. Oscar Dee Parker and Lou Shaddix Parker; her husband, Carlous Cooper; two sons: Kelly Ivey and Rev. Glenn Cooper; two sisters: Massie Harrell and Zippie Driggers and one brother, Herbert Parker.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Powell, Jackie Dingler, Patrick Dingler, Chase Ivey, Tyler Beegle, Matthew Ivey and David Driggers.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. . She will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Esther Mae Dial Sims
(Died May 20, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Esther Mae Dial Sims, age 94 of Delta, will be Monday, May 23, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Delta Baptist Church with Rev. Turk Holt and Rev. Jim Barkley officiating. Burial will follow in the Delta Cemetery.

Mrs. Sims passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. She was a native and life-long resident of Clay County and had been the Postmaster at the Delta Post Office for over 30 years. A member of Delta Baptist Church for over 80 years, she had served as church clerk and treasurer for over 40 years. She was also a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Clay County.

Mrs. Sims is survived by two sons: Jerome Sims (Mary Helen) of Trussville and Frank Sims (Nell) of Delta; one sister, Effie D. Wells Lonning of San Francisco plus four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Hartford “Hop” Sims; one granddaughter, Jenny Sims and four brothers: Veston, Heston, Roper and Excell Dial.

Pallbearers will be Lane Newton, Michael Norton, Dane Sims, Jim Sims, Jon Sims, and Troy Sims. Honorary pallbearers will be Jo Brown, Monzia Foshee, Beverly Jenkins, Verdie Nelson and Faye Sailors.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and until one hour prior to the service on Monday. She will lie in state at the church from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M.

Flowers will be accepted; however, memorial contributions may be made to the Delta cemetery Fund c/o Sonny Clarke, 3001 Haynes Mountain Road, Delta, AL, 36258.

Jeffrey R. "Shortcake" McCullough
(Died May 28, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Jeffrey “Shortcake” McCullough, age 45 of Ashland, will be Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Claude Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview-Poplar Springs Cemetery.

Mr. McCullough passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Clay County Hospital. A native of Sylacauga, “Shortcake” was a self-employed carpenter and had lived in Clay County the last few years of his life.

He is survived by one sister, Cindy Shell of Hixson, TN; two brothers: Michael McCullough of Hoover and Andrew McCullough of Montgomery plus two nieces and two nephews. Mr. McCullough was preceded in death by his parents: Allen Jackson McCullough and Juanita Helen Avant McCullough plus one daughter, Ashley McCullough.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Tuesday, May 31 from 1:00 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.

Helen Phillips Morris
(Died July 18, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Phillips Morris, age 82 of Ashland, will be Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland with Rev. Malinda J. Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashland City Cemetery.

Mrs. Morris passed away on Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston. She was born in Birmingham and lived in Leeds until moving to Clay County in 1938. Mrs. Morris worked for the Clay County Hospital and the Lineville Nursing Facility as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She also worked for over 15 years for the State of Alabama as a homemaker for the Department of Human Resources in Clay County. Mrs. Morris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ashland, the Women’s Study Club, the 20th Century Club and the Col. John Hull Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her husband, Joe V. Morris of Ashland; one sister, Norma Phillips Morris (Billy) of Ashland; two nieces: Dawn Hull Mackey of Ashland and Nina Morris Overton (Lee) of Alpine, AL; two nephews: Alan Morris of Ashland and Avery Morris of Ashland plus two great-nieces, four great-nephews and two great-great nieces. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Spencer Phillips and Jessie Dean Jones Phillips; her sister, Belle Phillips Hull and one great-nephew, Jonathan Mattox.

Pallbearers will be Alan Morris, Avery Morris, Sawyer Mattox, Lee Overton, Lee Mattox, Harold Morris, Johnny Rochester, and Ronald Robertson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class, Jean Nolen, Gail Nolen, Dick Nolen, Patty Purdy, Sandra Kennedy and Joe Mattox.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until 10:30 A.M. on Thursday.

Flowers will be accepted; however, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the general fund of the First United Methodist Church in Ashland at P.O. Box 305, Ashland, AL 36251.

Janie Corain Sadler Bowden
(Died July 25, 2011)

A graveside memorial service for Mrs. Janie Corain Sadler Bowden, age 60 of Lineville, will be held on Saturday, July 30,2011 at 10:00 A.M. in the Lineville City cemetery with Rev. Claude Bennett officiating.

Mrs. Bowden passed away on Monday, July 25, 2011 at her residence. A Perry, Florida native, she was a graduate of Taylor County High School where she competed as runner on the school track team. Mrs. Bowden then worked for a number of years as a Dental Hygienist. In 2003, she and her husband, Monte Ray Bowden moved to Lineville. Janie loved being in the outdoors and with Monte enjoyed hunting, fishing and outdoor life.

Mrs. Bowden is survived by three sisters: Norma Jean Stone (Elbert) of Jasper, Georgia, Cheryl Nix (Glenn) of Perry, Florida and Lexann Patterson (Robbie) of Perry, Florida; two brothers: Jessie W. Sadler, Jr. (Lawyne) of Perry, Florida and Charles Sadler of Live Oak, Florida plus a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Jessie Willard Sadler Sr. and Mildred Roberts Sadler and her husband of over 30 years, Monte Ray Bowden.

Kathaleen Horn Harris
(Died August 10, 2011)

A “Homegoing” celebration for Mrs. Kathaleen Horn Harris, age 73 of Ashland, will be Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Jack Drinkwater officiating. Burial will follow in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Palliative and Comfort Care Unit of UAB Hospital in Birmingham. She was a native of Talladega County but had lived most of her life in Clay County. She was a graduate of Lineville High School “Class of 1956” and later attended Southern Union State Community College. Mrs. Harris had been an office manager at the Riley Poultry Company for over 20 years then later became the owner and operator of “Kat’s Flowers” in Ashland. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband, William Ralph Harris of Ashland; one daughter and son-in-law, Dorinda J. and Scott L. Shaddix of Chelsea; her twin sister, Katherine Horn of Ashland; one brother, Oliver Horn of Tennessee; her brother-in-law, Jim McClellan, two grandchildren: Kara M. and Dalton L. Shaddix plus nine nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents: Chester Crawford Horn and Lillie Irene Horn; one sister, Lillie Irene McClellan and one brother, James C. Horn.

Pallbearers will be Mike McClellan, David Horn, Steven Horn, Marc Wheeles, Mark Wood, J.C. Murphy Jr., Gerald Harris and Keith Harry. Honorary pallbearers will be Lowell Harris, Scott Sparks, Gary Summerlin, and Melvin Myrick.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Friday, August 12, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Saturday.
