Services will be held at University Church of God, Sunday, December 12 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Willard Scott and Rev. Billy Boatwright officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends will be received today at Martin Funeral Home Chapel from 6-9 p.m. Survivors include three sons, Horace Dennis of Plantersville, Floyd Daniel Chandler of Maplesville and Michael Dale Chandler of Selma; three brothers, Horace Lowell Patterson of Plantersville, Randall Lee Verlon of Demopolis and James Curtis Patterson of Selma; sister, Una Faye Lawrence of West Blockton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Molly Patterson died Dec. 17, burial was at Liberty Hill in Coosa County. Her first marriage was to Mr. Jim Dennis of Coosa County, 4 Children, 2 are Dead, Aaron Dennis of Jemison and Mrs. Johnny Wright of Clanton. Second marriage was to Mr. Josiah Patterson of Coosa Co. and they had 2 children, Jim Patterson of Rockford and Emma Patterson. (Please Note: The Grave Stones at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist cemetery in Coosa Co. list: Mary L. Patterson Born 12-25-1848 Died 12-12-1933 Josiah Patterson Born 9-7-1850, Died 2-11-1908Also note that Polly or Molly were used for those named Mary. Often second Mary in a Family was Polly, and the third Mary was Molly.

She worked as a bank teller. She died March 20, 1998, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Terry Patterson of Jemison; a sister, Cheyenne Cleckley of Jemison; a grandfather, Lee Childress of Thorsby; and a grandmother, Nell Littleton of Clanton.

Burial will follow at Ebenezer Baptist cemetery in Stanton, and Martin Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 from 5-8 p. m. Payne was born on Aug. 13, 1938, in Bibb County, the son of the late Albert and Essie Mae Payne. He was a supervisor. He died on Nov. 12, 2000, at Chilton Medical Center. Survivors include two sons, David Payne, West Blocton, and Daryl Payne, Stanton; two daughters, Karen McKinnon, Maplesville, and Amy Payne, Stanton; three brothers, Wesley Payne, Maplesville, Fred Payne, Randolph, and Tom Payne, Woodstock, three sisters, Betty Smith, Lawley and Sanera Bush and Inez Smitherman, both of Maplesville; and eight grandchildren.

Graveside services for Jesse Pope Payne, Jr., 78, of Thorsby, are today, May 17, 1998, at Thorsby Memorial cemetery with Rev. Harry Gulledge officiating and Martin Funeral Home directing. Mr. Payne was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Alabama to the late Jess Pope and Gladys Roberta Payne. He worked as a plumber. He died May 15, 1998 in Thorsby. He is survived by his wife, Elsie D. Payne of Thorsby; two daughters: Nell Freeman of Birmingham and Dell Geeslin of Thorsby; a sister, Norma Jean Atchison of Pinson; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Blossom Payne, Maplesville; one daughter Shelia Davenport, Jemison; three sons, Andy Payne, Albert Payne and Shorty Payne, all of Maplesville; four brothers, Wesley Payne, Dewey Payne, Fred Payne, all of Maplesville, and Tom Payne, West Blockton; three sisters, Inez Smitherman, Betty Smith, and Sedera Bush all of Maplesville; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Payne was born on Dec. 12, 1936, in Alabama, the son of the late Albert Moody and Essie Mae Payne. He was a foreman and operator. He died on May 23, 1999, at his residence. He is survived by three daughters, Loretta Payne, Birmingham; Julie Brechin, Vincent; Angie Burbank, Helena; one son, Michael Payne, Vincent; three sisters, Inez Smitherman, Maplesville, Betty Smith Lawley, Sadera Bush, Maplesville; five brothers, Wesley Payne, Lavette Payne, Dewey Payne, all of Maplesville, Tom Payne, Woodstock, Fred Payne, Randolph; eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia A. Payne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Jesse Payne.

Funeral services for Wesley E. Payne, 76 and a resident of Maplesville, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Stanton Bible Methodist Church, with Rev. John Ingram officiating. Interment will follow at Randolph Baptist Cemetery. Born on Oct. 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Albert Payne and the late Essie Payne. An assistant track supervisor and an Army veteran, he died on Dec. 30, 2000 at Selma Baptist Hospital. He is survived by his wife Katherine Payne of Maplesville; four sons, Johnny Payne of Stanton, Roy Glenn Payne of Maplesville, Bill Payne of Maplesville and Frank Payne of Maplesville; three daughters, Sandra Hayes of Stanton, Patricia Frisch of Brainerd, Minn., and Kathie Clark of Selma; two brothers, Fred Payne of Randolph and Tom Payne of West Blockton; three sisters, Inez Smitherman of Maplesville, Betty Smith of Lawley and Sadera Bush of Maplesville; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Payne and a grandson, Robert Eugene Frisch.

Robert Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Chilton Memorial Gardens, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Payton was born on Dec. 19, 1923, in Alabama, the son of the late John Payton and the late Elsie Payton. He was a shipping and receiving clerk and served in the Army. He died on Dec. 9, 2001, at Chilton Medical Center in Clanton. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Payton, Clanton; three daughters, Peggy Cox, Clanton, Jo Ann Headley, Shelby, Jenny Sumrall, Enterprise; one son, Jimmy Payton, Clanton; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brother Willie Payton and Thomas Payton.

Burial followed at Pleasant Grove Methodist Cemetery, in Clanton, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Smith was born on June 28, 1945, in Alabama, the daughter of Fannie Payton and the late Julius Payton. She died on Sept. 15, 2000, at Selma Baptist Hospital. Survivors include two sons, William Smith and Ray Smith, both of Lawley; two daughters, Lima Smitherman, Clanton, and Christy Denson, Selma; her mother Fannie Payton, Clanton; one brother, Roger Payton, Clanton; and one sister, Laverne Dismuke, Eclectic; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Smith.

Payton, Lewis Lawson

Service for Lewis Lawson Payton, 84 of Clanton, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Martin Funeral Home Chapel. He will be buried at Cane Creek Baptist Cemetery. The Rev. Randy Newman and Rev. Gene Truman will preside over the service. Visitation will take place at Martin Funeral Home tonight from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Payton was a machine operator by trade. He is survived by his wife, Diane Payton of Clanton as well as one son - Morris Payton of Jemison. He is survived by two grandsons - Randy Payton of Clanton and Kendall Payton of Clanton as well as one brother, Julius Payton of Ozark. He is also survived by five sisters - Ethel Payton of Clanton, Maudie Atha of Clanton, Victoria Smitherman of Clanton and Marzelle Robinson of Clanton and Etta Redmond of Alabaster.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Phillips, Clanton; one daughter, Janice Hayes, Clanton; one grandson, Scotty Jones, Clanton; and two great-grandchildren.

Michael Joseph Pickens, age 23, died at the home of his Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Downs Monday. Burial was at Clanton City Cemetery. He is survived by his Parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Pickens of Denver, Col., 1 Sister, Mrs. Dean Moyer of Colorado. His father was principal of Chilton County High School for some years in the past.

Pierce was born on Feb. 12, 1905, in Chilton County, the son of the late George Henry Pierce and the late Frances Pierce. He was a farmer. He died on Feb. 15, 2002, at Hatley Health Care in Clanton. Survivors include three sons, G. C. "Bud" Pierce, Clanton, Thomas R. Pierce, Montgomery, Barney Pierce, Billingsley; one daughter, Frances P. Hughes, Prattville; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Pierce, and one daughter, Mary Sue Baker.

Burial was held at the New Harmony Holiness cemetery with the Martin Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Pierce was born in Chilton County on October 25, 1911 to the late John Baker and Luraine Franklin Baker. She died at the Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Clanton on June 25, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Reynolds Pierce, Clanton; three sons and a daughter, Cecil Smitherman, Joel L. Smitherman, A. J. Smitherman and Carolyn Hathcock, all of Clanton; 15 grandchildren and14 great-grandchildren.
