Rollan, Marie D.

Marie D. Rollan, 85, of Birmingham, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003 at Mount Pisgah cemetery in Clanton. Pastor Barry Bruce officiated. Mrs. Rollan was preceded in death by her husband Elmer N. Rollan and parents Ocie Lee and Martha Elizabeth DeVaughn. Survivors include her son Mike Allen Rollan and his wife May of Cahaba Heights; two brothers Rueben Arnold DeVaugan of Clanton and Calvin Coolidge DeVaughn of Montgomery; sister Bernice Glenn of Jemison; two granddaughters Michele Steadman of Alabaster and Melissa Rollan of Birmingham. Mrs. Rollan was a longtime member of Philadelphia Baptist Church of Cahaba Heights and she will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Rollins, Alexy "Alie" Madison
January 30, 1860 - April 27, 1939
Alie Madison Rollins, age 79, died at Thorsby April 27. Burial was at Liberty Hill Cemetery. He is survived by 2 Daughters, Mrs. Tom Kemp of Clanton, and Miss Nellie Rollins of Thorsby, 1 Son, John Rollins of Thorsby. He grew up in the Coopers and bethel Communities and was the Son of John Rollins and Mary Jane Miears Rollins.

Roper, G. Clarence, M.D.
October 1893 - 1929
Dated 9-12-1929, Dr. G. C. Roper died Tue. He died from Gun shot wounds received at Boothton, Ala., age 35. He was the Son of Mr. and Mrs. O.O. Roper of Clanton and was a Brother of Royal M. Roper of Clanton. C.C. White was arrested and charged with Murder. Dr. Roper was the Mine Physician for Southern Coal and Coke Co. at Boothton and C.C.White was the Mine Storekeeper. Burial was at Clanton Cemetery. Dr. Clarence Roper was born and reared in Clanton, burial Clanton City Cemetery.

Roper, Henry Arthur
March 02, 1909 - April 29, 2004
Services for Henry Roper, 95, of Clanton were held May 1 with burial at Martin Memorial Cemetery. Reverends Perry Dalton, John Trobaugh and Ed Britton officiated. Mr. Roper was born March 2, 1909 in Clanton on Hinkle Road where his parents Harry and Lula Young Roper lived. He worked in Birmingham at Drennen Motor Car Company from his 19th birthday in 1928 until 1954 when he and his wife Dorothy moved back to Clanton. He became sales manager for Stokes Chevrolet, winning many sales awards until his retirement in 1973. He was inducted into the U.S. Army April 14, 1943 and received an Honorable Discharge September 30, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. He spent his time training recruits at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Roper moved back to Birmingham where he met and married Dorothy Roberts, who had just been discharged from the U.S. Navy. Mr. Roper died April 29. His goal and ambition was to live to be 100 years old. He almost made it. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Roper of Clanton; daughter, Cordelia "Dee" Poulus of Mobile; sons, Jerry Dalton of Clanton, Alvin Dalton of Selma, Rev. Ralph Eugene Dalton of Mobile and Rev. Perry Dalton of Panama City; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

Rollan, Ida Bell
December 15, 1908 - July 3, 2000
Funeral services for Ida Bell Rollan, 91, Clanton, were held on Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Arthur Davis, Rev. Pate Hughins, and Rev. J.T. Meank officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church Cemetery, in Clanton, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Rollan was born on Dec. 15, 1908 in Alabama, the daughter of the late Lewis and Zadie Wright. She was a homemaker. She died on July 3, 2000, at Chilton Medical Center in Clanton. Survivors include two daughters, Eva Cofer and Mary Staggs, both of Clanton; three sons, Vernon Rollan and Erskin Rollan, both of Birmingham, and Denson Rollan, Clanton; two brothers, Tommy Wright, Lakeland, Fla., and William Wright, Clanton; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch A. "Lee" Rollan.

Roper, Orville Oliver

Mr. O.O. Roper, age 79, died May 18. Burial was Clanton City Cemetery. Survived by his Wife, 1 Son, 1 Daughter, 4 Brothers and 3 Sisters.

Roseberry, Jason Adam
June 14, 1984 - January 28, 1998
Funeral services for Jason Adam Roseberry, 16, of Montgomery were Jan. 31, 1998 at Martin Chapel with Rev. Bobby Hicks and Rev. Burton Herring officiating. Burial was in Antioch Methodist cemetery in Maplesville with Martin Funeral Home directing. Mr. Roseberry was born June 14, 1984, in Montgomery County to Kenneth Ray Roseberry and Elizabeth Almond Ghosh. He was a student. He died Jan. 28, 1998, at his residence in Montgomery. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step-mother, Judy Faye Roseberry of Montgomery; two brothers: Donald Ray Roseberry and Richard Stevens, both of Montgomery; a sister, Joy Stevens of Montgomery; his grandmother, Vonzell Roseberry of Maplesville; and his grandfather, Richard Almond of Homestead, Fla.

Funeral services for Eula May Gay Ruddick, 94, of Stanton, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Powell and Rev. Matt Hawkins officiating. Burial was at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2003 at Ebenezer Baptist cemetery in Stanton. Born on April 8, 1908 to Thomas Monroe Gay and Sarah Pastrilla Gay, she died March 15, 2003 at Vaughan Medical Center in Selma. Survivors include her daughter Peggy Eddy of Stanton; son Eddie L. Ruddick of Stanton; granddaughter Kay Schuffert of Huntsville, Connie Eddy of Huntsville, Deborah Blais of Newton, Miss, and Rhonda Ruddick Eason of Fugua Varina, N. C.; great-grandchildren Chris Seiger of Montgomery, William Cole of Union, Miss., Aaron Eason of Fugua Varina, N.C., Sarah Cole of Philadelphia, Miss., Chelsea Eason of Fugua Varina, N. C. She was preceded in death by her husband William Leon Ruddick.

Funeral services for Gladys Faye Rush, 70, Stanton, will be held at Stanton Bible Methodist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Ingram officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Baptist cemetery in Stanton, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Rush was born on Oct 31, 1930, in Perry County, the son of the late Charlie W. Rush, Sr., and the late Verna D. Rush. She was employed in lock assembly. She died on July 20, 2001, in Maplesville. Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Harrison, Stanton, and Mary R. Stewart, Clanton; one brother, C. W. Rush, Jr., Maplesville; six nephews, Charles Harrison, Stanton, Larry Rush, Jasper, Eldridge Stewart, Camden, Mike Stewart, Clanton, Charlie Rush, Panama City, Fla., and Darrell Rush, Calera; three nieces, Julia Stewart, Montgomery, Carole Littleton, Thorsby, and Brenda Burrel, Little Rock, Ark. and 13 great nieces and nephews.

Harrison, Mildred Florence (Rush)

Services for Mildred Rush Harrison, 80, of Stanton, were held Monday, February 22 at Stanton Bible Methodist Church with Rev. John Ingram and Rev. Charles Sullivan officiating. Burial followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery. Harrison died Sunday, February 20 at Park Place Nursing and Rehab Center, Selma. Survivors include her son, Charles Irby Harrison of Stanton; granddaughter, Karen Harrison Smith of Stanton; great-grandson, Keaton Jones of Stanton; sister, Mary Charles Stewart of Clanton; and brother, C. W. Rush of Clanton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irby Harrison; father, Charlie W. Rush, Sr. and her mother, Verna Davis Rush. Contributions may be made to Stanton Bible Methodist Church.

Rutland, Franklin Asberry 'Berry', Jr.
September 25, 1918 - March 29, 2002
Graveside services for Barry Rutland, Jr., 83, Rock Hill, S.C., were held on Monday, April 1, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Verbena Cemetery, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Rutland was born on Sept. 25, 1918, in Alabama, the son of the late Franklin Asbury Rutland, Sr., and the late Addie Ruth Rutland. He was a maintenance repairman. He died on March 29, 2002, at Ebenezer Nursing Home. Survivors include his wife Marie Rutland, Rock Hill, S.C. (and formerly of Glencoe); two daughters, Anette Hagen, Gadsden, Betty Douglas, Jacksonville; one son Larry C. Rutland, Rock Hill, S.C.; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

Mims, Laura (Sanders)

Funeral services for Laura S. Mims, 89, of Clanton were Jan. 18, 1998, at Martin Chapel with Rev. Charles Brooks officiating. Burial was in Chilton Memorial Gardens in Clanton with Martin Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Mims was born July 26, 1908 in Perry County to the late John David and Elizabeth Sanders. She was a homemaker. She died Jan. 16, 1998 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Odean M. and Johnnie Popwell, Jr. of Clanton; two grandsons: Euge Popwell and Oneal Popwell, both of Clanton; two great-grandchildren: Cassie Popwell and Laken Popwell, both of Clanton; and a brother, Jack Sanders of Clanton. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Mims.

Sandlin, Charlie R.

Sandlin, Charlie Richard, 59, of Clanton, died December 12that County Hospital. A native of Chilton County, he was born September 30, 1910, the son of William Mae Sandlin and Elizabeth McSwain Sandlin. Funeral services were held December 30th at 3:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Clanton with Hershel Blalock and J.G. Gutchinson officiating. Burial was in Clanton Memorial Gardens. Survivors include the wife, Eura B. Sandlin, Clanton; a daughter, Clara Mae Dennis, Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Charles Raybon Sandlin, Montgomery, Five Brothers: T. A. Sandlin of Verbena; Leonard and Kern Sandlin, Clanton; Woodrow and W. M. Jr. Sandlin, Birmingham; and two grandchildren.

Sansom, Donald Edward
January 30, 1946 - February 14, 2004
Services for Donald Sansom, 58, of Clanton will be held today, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at Glad Tidings Church of God. Burial will follow at Chestnut Creek cemetery with Reverends Larry Craig and W. L. Adams officiating. Mr. Sansom, a foreman for water department, died at his home Feb. 14. Survivors include his wife, Linda Sansom of Clanton; sons, Joey and Jason Sansom of Clanton; daughter, Shelia Minor of Clanton; granddaughters, Brandi and Kayla Minor and Amber and Briana Sansom; grandson, Shea Sansom; father, Willie Sansom; brothers, James, Harold and Mickey Sansom. He was the son of Willie and Minnie Sansom.

Sansom, Harvey Washington

Services for Harvie Sansom, 86, of Verbena, will be held today, Feb. 20, At Floyd Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the church yard with Reverends Frank Nelson, Ralph Jones and Doug Powell officiating. Mr. Sansom, a serviceman and a farmer, died at Alabaster Healthcare Center Feb. 17. Survivors include his son, H. D. (Darlene) Sansom of Clanton; grandson, Shane Sansom of Clanton; granddaughter, Stephanie Culp of Knoxville; sisters, Gladys Headley of Verbena, Louise Little of Selma, Frances Coe of Clanton, Melda Manning of Clanton and three great-grandchildren. He was the son of George and Lucindy Sansom.

Services for Melda Manning, 94, of Verbena, were held May 3 with burial at Mulberry Baptist Cemetery. Reverends Jerry Smith, Frank Nelson and Jack Drinkwater officiated. Mrs. Manning, a homemaker, died May 1. Survivors include her sisters, Gladys Headley of Verbena, Louise Little of Selma and Frances Cole of Clanton; step-sons, Millard Manning of California and Clifford Manning of Las Vegas; step-daughter, Judy Noffsinger of Roundrock, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Agnes Pearl Cleckler, 80, and a resident of Clanton, will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Zion Ridge Church of God, with Rev. Tony Thomas and Brother Robert Barno officiating. Interment will follow at Zion Ridge Church of God Cemetery. Visitation will be held today, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, from 5-8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home. Born on Oct. 30, 1921 in Chilton County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper Dow Scarbrough and the late Pearl Bell Brown Scarbrough. A homemaker, she died on Dec. 8, 2001 at Chilton Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willien Winfred Cleckler. She is survived by three sons, Winfred Oneal Cleckler, Wilton Edwin Cleckler and Jerry R. Cleckler, all of Clanton; a daughter, Julia Ann Mims of Clanton; five brothers, Jasper Scarbrought, Jr., of Alabaster, Wallace R. Scarbrought of Albertville, Ala., and Newton E. Scarbrough, Charles Edward Scarbrough and Kenneth Scarbrough, all of Clanton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Burial followed in Martin Memorial cemetery in Clanton. Born on Dec. 28, 1929 to Jasper D. Scarbrough, Sr., and Pearl Scarbrough, he died June 28, 2003 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. Survivors include his wife Merlyn W. Scarbrough of Pelham; sons Bruce D. (Nan) Scarbrough of Helena and Brian K. (Carol) Scarbrough of Pelham; granddaughter Ashley B. Scarbrough of Helena; grandsons Tyler Rayn Scarbrough of Helena, Blake D. Scarbrough of Pelham and Jered T. Scarbrough of Pelham; brothers Newton Scarbrough of Clanton, Edward Scarbrough of Clanton, Wallace Scarbrough of Albertville and Kenneth Scarbrough of Clanton.

Tony Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pisgah cemetery in Clanton. Born on Jan. 20, 1923 in Chilton County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper D. Scarbrough and the late Pearl Brown Scarbrough. A homemaker, she died on Dec. 8, 2000 at Chilton Medical Center. She is survived by three daughters, Norma Mims and Myra Northcutt, both of Clanton; and Connie Cleckler Childress of Birmingham; three sons, Ronnie Knight, Mark Knight and Seth Knight, all of Clanton; a sister, Agnes Scarbrough Cleckler of Clanton; five brothers, Jasper Scarbrough, Jr. of Thorsby, Newt Scarbrough and Edward Scarbrough and Kenneth Scarbrough, all of Clanton, and Rayborn Scarbrough of Albertville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Schuffert, Lena Viola (Yates)

Funeral services for Lena Viola (Yates) Schuffert, 94, Coopers, will be held on Thursday, April 27, 200, at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Clanton, with Rev. Tony Smitherman officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Creek cemetery in Coopers, with Martin Funeral Home directing. Schuffert was a Baptist and a retired homemaker. She was a sixth-generation descendent of Moses Yates, a founder and the first preacher at Chestnut Creek Baptist Church where she was a member. She died on April 26, 2000. Survivors include one son, Bill Schuffert, Prattville; two daughters, L. V. Spiers, Madeira Beach, Fla., and Mavis Mathews, Verbena; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Henry Schuffert; daughter Margaret Lott; and one granddaughter. The family requests memorials be made to Chestnut Creek Baptist Church, c/o Charles Cagle, 11975 County Road 24, Verbena.
