ALDEN CRISP
PELL CITY — Funeral service for Alden "Larry" Crisp, 69, will be Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home chapel on Highway 150 in Hoover with the Rev. A.L. Courtney and the Rev. Don Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Crisp died April 10. He was a public accountant and owned his own accounting practice for 39 yerars. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Pell City and was a member of Douglas Sunday School Class. He was an Army veteran who served in the Panama Canal Zone for two years as an air traffic controller.
He is survived by his wife, Mary "Mem" Crisp of Pell City; three sons, James "Bo" Crisp of Pell City, Michael Crisp (Suzanne) of Birmingham and Bob Crisp (Su Bette) of Oxford; one daughter, Mary Lewis (Chris) of Alabaster; and seven grandchildren, James Hull, Stephanie Crisp, Evan Crisp, Cody Crisp, Mattie Crisp, Christopher Lewis and Jeremy Lewis; one sister, Sue Adcox (Jerry) of Trussville; and one aunt, Mattie Crisp.
Pallbearers will be Allen Adcox, Bill Adcox, Cody Crisp, Don Grant, Scott Edwards and James Hull.
Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover will direct the service.
MATALIE Carter GRANT
Matalie Carter Grant died on March 27, 2004, after a brief illness. Mrs. Grant was born in Munford, Alabama, on February 20, 1912, the second daughter and third child of seven of Joseph Renzo and Ora Mae Dial Carter. Her father was the proprietor of Carter's General Merchandise there, which opened in Munford in 1909. She attended Jacksonville State College, where she received a degree in 1932 and began a career as an elementary school teacher in Talladega County and taught in both Winterboro and Lincoln. In 1938, she married George McInvale Grant of Troy who had the previous year won a special election for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2nd Congressional District. She was active in many congressional wives' organizations, especially the Congressional Club, the International Neighbors Club and the Congressional Wives Prayer Group. Her children attended St. Albans and the National Cathedral School, where she was active in parent organizations, as well as the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the National Democratic Club and the Washington Club.
Recalling the pre-World War II Washington, she came to as a young bride, Mrs. Grant often reminisced about the formality and sense of history in those days. Calling cards had to be left by congressional wives at the White House and all foreign embassies and Congress rarely stayed in session for more than six months of the year. She remembered the Washington premier of "Gone With the Wind" in 1939, when everyone marched down Pennsylvania Avenue from the theater to the reception, led by the film's stars Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh; the gala 1941 opening of the National Gallery of Art, when the ladies in their evening dresses, after hours of waiting to be admitted to the crowded galleries, finally had to sit down on the marble floors to give their feet a rest; and the night in 1945 when Secret Service surrounded the apartment building of their neighbor, then Vice President Harry Truman, signaling the passing of FDR.
Mrs. Grant is survived by a son, George M. Grant Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Alicia Grant Longwell of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; three grandchildren, George M. Grant III of New York, N.Y., Julia Jane Longwell and Oliver Grant Longwell of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Cameron Faith Grant of New York, N.Y.; and locally she is survived by nephews, George Culver and Gary Carter, and nieces, Janice Conerly and Frankie Holcombe of Munford.
Private graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery
on Tuesday morning, April 13.
MATTIE OLA GREER
FITZGERALD, Ga. — Funeral service for Mattie Ola Greer, 93, will be Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Paulk Funeral Home chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Greer died April 11 at Fitzgerald Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 23, 1911, in Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her parents, T. Wiley Fletcher and Nellie Watkins Fletcher; her husband, Jesse Waters Greer; daughter, Margie Ola Danley; five brothers; and one sister. She lived in Fitzgerald most of her life, retired as an operator for Western Union after 20 years of service and was the former day clerk at Lee-Grant Hotel in Fitzgerald. She formerly operated a hotel in Sylacauga and was a former resident of Childersburg. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Dixieland Chapter No. 443 in Childersburg, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald and was a former resident of Heritage Manor in Ocilla, Ga.
She is survived by sons, Don Greer of Birmingham and Dan Greer of Fitzgerald; brothers, Louie Fletcher of Honolulu, Hawaii, Robert Fletcher of Navarre, Fla., Monte Fletcher of Las Vegas, Nev., and Joe Fletcher of Fitzgerald; sisters, Twilla DeMeritt of Branford, Fla., and Iva Nell Hogan of Fitzgerald; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Paul Funeral Home in Fitzgerald will direct the service.

LINEVILLE — Funeral service for J.B. Griffin, 76, will be Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Barfield with the Rev. Willie Densmore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Griffin died April 9 at The Countryside Health Center in Buchanan, Ga. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Lineville and was a retired businessman.
He is survived by sons, J. Howard Griffin of Carrollton, Ga., and Farry Lavell Griffin of Anniston; daughters, Genette Simmons of Carrollton, Ga., Pauline Satterwhite of Carrollton, Ga., Carolyn Lindsey of Lineville and Jessie Strickling and Charlotte Strickling of Anniston; sisters, Mae Will Phillips and Dorthy Welch of Lineville and Mozell Payne and Irene Goggins of New Jersey; stepchildren, Cleve Lindsey, Phyllis Lindsey, Joyce Lindsey, Richard Lindsey, Ruby Jean Hardy and Rodney Houston of Lineville; and a host of grandchildren.
Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

VINCENT — Funeral service for Irene Martin Whitten House, 85, will be Tuesday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. James Blair officiating. Burial will be in Coosa Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. House died April 11. She was a lifelong resident of St. Clair County and was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lorenze Whitten and J. Floyd House. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She was loved by all and will be missed.
She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Alley-Hess; sons, John Whitten, Frank (Martha) Whitten, Robert (Judy) Whitten, Donald (Charlotte) Whitten and Ronald (Marie) Whitten; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

BOAZ — Graveside service for infant Gracie Danielle Hyatt will be Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. in Cool Springs Baptist Cemetery
with the Rev. Paul Alexander officiating.
The infant died April 10 in Birmingham. She will be laid to rest beside her grandfather, Joseph Klimczyk, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her parents, Paul and Susan Hyatt of Boaz; sisters, Stephanie and Jessica Hyatt of Boaz; grandparents, Susie Klimczyk of Ashville and Veston and Sarah Hyatt of Steele; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

MONTGOMERY — Funeral service for Virginia Kendrick, 75, will be Thursday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with Minister Cortez Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Talladega Springs Cemetery.
Mrs. Kendrick died April 12 at Cedar Crest Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat Kendrick.
She is survived by son, Dewey Kendrick and wife Charlene of Montgomery; granddaughter, Monica Ward and husband Andy of Montgomery; great-granddaughter, Caroline Ward of Montgomery; sisters, Jeanette Owens of Helena, Joan Judd of Sylvan Springs, Evelyn Robinson of Gainesville, Fla., and Margie Robson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and brother, Ron Bowen of Birmingham.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for William Edward (Joe) McCluskey Jr., 77, will be Tuesday, April 13, at 1 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home chapel in Talladega with the Rev. Keith Owensby officiating. Burial will be in Midway Memory Gardens.
Mr. McCluskey died April 10 at Baptist Medical Center Montclair in Birmingham. He was a native of Tallassee and lived in Talladega County most of his life. He was a member of Ironaton United Methodist Church and worked at Wehadkee Yarn Mills. He retired from Image Yarns in Talladega. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances McCluskey; brother, Frank McCluskey; and sister, Ruth Evans.
He is survived by daughter, Rhonda Cox of Sylacauga; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Butler, Travis Mitchell, Billy Frank Evans, Thomas Hutton, Bob Ford and Johnny Pace.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Burton and his nephews.

BIRMINGHAM — Funeral service for Gordon Houston Vick, 78, will be Wednesday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg chapel with the Rev. Vinzant officiating. Burial will be in Harpersville Cemetery.
Mr. Vick died April 10 in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee Vick and Christine Gill Vick; sister, Emmie Finch; and brother, Laverne Vick. He was retired from U.S. Steel (formerly T.C.I.), was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a member of Hilldale Baptist Church in Centerpoint.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Vick of Birmingham; daughters, Glenda Susan (Wendell) Moore of Verbena and Barbara Jane Foshee of Clanton; stepdaughters, Debbie (Jim) Horton of Atlanta, Ga., Lynn Brown of Birmingham, Dorothy (Jim) Wyatt of Alabaster and Judy (Leon) Roberson of Clanton; sister, Mae Watts of Ironaton; brother, Gerald (Betty Jo) Vick of Harpersville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
