ALBERT BENSON JR.

ALEXANDER CITY — Funeral service for Albert Benson Jr., 84, will be Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred A. Lee officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Mr. Benson died Aug. 1 at Jackson Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Lee Benson of Alexander City; 12 children, Albert Benson III, Lonnie Benson, Vonetta Benson, James Benson, Bethany Murph, Calvin Benson, the Rev. Stanford Benson, Jerry Benson, Perry Benson, Monica Benson, Latangya Benson, all of Alexander City, and Blake Barfield of Waukegan, Ill.; sisters, Helen Peavey and Inez Benson of Alexander City; brothers, Walter Benson, Willie Benson and J.D. Benson of Alexander City and James Benson and Johnny Benson of Birmingham; 36 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Wright's Funeral Home will direct the service.

LARRY BICE

RAGLAND — Funeral service for Larry Bice, 61, will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Ragland with the Rev. Doug Ford officiating. Burial will be in Fair View Baptist Cemetery in Ragland.

Mr. Bice died July 31 at his residence. He was a member of the Ragland Police Department for 25 years, serving as Chief of Police for 18 years. He was a lifelong member of Ragland Hunting Club. He was a member of Fair View Baptist Church and was a lead singer for several quartets from the St. Clair County area. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jamie Leigh Bice.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Bice of Ragland; son, Derek Bice of Ragland; sister, Charlotte Williams of Prattville; and brothers, Gilbert Bice and Rodney Meads of Ragland.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Williams, Leon Williams, Blake Campbell, Kenneth Crowe, Jeremy Meads, Jason Bice, Ronnie Campbell Jr. and Jeremy Cox.

Usrey Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

TRAVIS JOHN CANTONE

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Travis John Cantone, 2 months, will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with the Rev. Wayne Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Greenhill Memorial Gardens.

The infant died Aug. 1 at Coosa Valley BMC.

He is survived by his parents, Jennifer Green of Sylacauga and Thomas Cantone of Birmingham; brother, Joshua Cantone of Sylacauga; and grandparents, Cindy Green of Sylacauga, Danny Green of Childersburg and Kathleen Cantone of Lineville.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

GARY M. DAWSON

LEEDS — Funeral service for Gary M. Dawson, 53, will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Leeds.

Mr. Dawson died Aug. 1. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Dawson, and his sons, Jeremy and Jason Dawson.

He is survived by his mother, Lois Dawson; brother, Mickey Dawson; sisters, Pat Beavers and Dee Ann Quick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds will direct the service.

ESTELLE L. FINCHER

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Estelle L. Fincher, 98, will be Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at Cook Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Armon Rich and the Rev. Bobby Parker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Fincher died Aug. 2. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon E. Fincher; and son, Charles G. Fincher.

She is survived by daughter, Lynette F. Horne; son, William Gene Fincher; daughter-in-law, Irene Fincher; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

CHANELL LEIGH FLEMING

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Graveside service for Chanell Leigh Fleming, 42, will be Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Reaves officiating.

Ms. Fleming died July 30 in Nashville, Tenn. She grew up in Sylacauga and finished school at Sylacauga High School. She spent the past few years living in the Murfreesboro, Tenn., area. She was preceded in death by her mother, Louanne Lanier Fleming Whitehurst; her father, Wayne Fleming; and her grandparents, Louise Lanier, Pauline Fleming and the Rev. J.D. Fleming.

She is survived by her brother, Rodger Fleming; nephew, Elliott Fleming; stepgrandmother, Orene Fleming; her father, Paul Whitehurst and wife Delaine; brothers, Paul Whitehurst Jr. and wife Kitty, David Whitehurst and wife Ann, Mark Whitehurst and wife Ann and Dick Whitehurst and wife Lynn; sister, Emily Bearden and husband Theron; and many friends who loved her.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

ELAINE K. HARKINS

SCOTTSVILLE, Ga. — Funeral service for Elaine K. Harkins, 75, will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Plainville Independent Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Fain Cemetery.

Mrs. Harkins died July 31 at the Redmond Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Etowah County but spent most of her life in Gordon County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Hattie Sue Scott Kalevas; and her husband of 54 years, Donald Harkins on July 23, 2003. She was a longtime employee of Wal-Mart and was a devoted grandmother who took special pleasure in time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by son, Terry Harkins of Cedartown, Ga.; daughters, Carol Bridges of Scottsville and Linda Garing of Pell City; brother, Johnny Kalevas of Plainville; six beloved grandchildren; seven beloved great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jason Pendergrass, Mark Wright, Casey Bridges, Jason Fuller and Glenn and Sean Harkins.

Honorary pallbearers will be Faye Autry, Tommy Gates, Robert Stanfield, Paul Garing and Ellis Woods.

Thomas Funeral Home in Calhoun, Ga., will direct the service.

FRED HARRIS

KELLYTON — Funeral service for Fred Harris, 81, will be Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Hanover with the Rev. Donnie Blackmon and the Rev. Donald Guice officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Harris died Aug. 1 at Adams Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Clay County to John Wesley Lon Harris and Vergie Bryant Harris. He worked as a carpenter for Madix for more than 22 years and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Harris of Kellyton; sons, James Alvin Harris, William Harris and Houston Harris of Kellyton and Billy Joe Harris and Allen Wayne Harris of Sylacauga; daughters, Darlene Blanks of Alexander City and Peggy Sue Bradford of Talladega; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.

Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City will direct the service.

JOHN M. HAYNES

TALLADEGA — John M. Haynes, 75, died Aug. 2 at Citizens BMC.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega.

ALMUS HEFLIN

ANNISTON — Almus Heflin, 76, died July 31.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ervin Funeral Home.

EMMA LEE HOLMES

STEVENS POINT, Wisc. — Funeral service for Emma Lee Holmes, 88, will be Thursday, Aug. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with the Rev. Clay Grondin officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Holmes died July 30 at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point, Wisc. She was born and raised in Sylacauga. She lived in Columbus, Ga., and owned and operated a beauty shop there for more than 20 years. She retired with her husband, Floyd O. Holmes, to Prattville until 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd O. Holmes. She moved to Wisconsin in 1999 due to ill health and to live with her daughter.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra K. Holmes of Stevens Point, Wisc.; grandson, Daniel Holmes Olson and wife XE of Stevens Point, Wisc.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.
