Herren
WOODLAND - Services for Mrs. Ione Carpenter Herren, 86, of Woodland, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from Pine Hill Christian Church with Bro. Ralph Posey and Bro. Randy Knight officiating. Mrs. Herren will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in Herren's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery
with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Herren died Thursday, March 31, at Tanner Medical Center.
Mrs. Herren is survived by one daughter, Jane Merrill, her husband, Tommy, of Woodland; two sons, Tommy Herren, his wife, Sue, Steve Herren, his wife, Mona, of Woodland; one brother, Bro. Sam Carpenter, Jr.; five sisters, Joyce Davis, Sara Turner, both of Wedowee, Ruth Childress, of Roanoke, Ermis Wingard, of Birmingham, Sue Andress, of Brewton; eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Herren, Jason Merrill, Heath Mitchell, Brit Lovvorn, Chandler Poston, Scott Edwards, and Matt Herren. Mrs. Herren was born January 22, 1919 the daughter of S.W. and Effie Washington Carpenter. She was a member and treasurer of the Pine Hill Christian Church, a school teacher in elementary education, held bible study for women's ministries at Randolph County Jail, and member of the Woodland Senior Citizens Group. Mrs. Herren was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Herren; three sisters, Mozell and Louise Carpenter, and Mildred Hester.
Hurst
TALLADEGA - Services for Mr. Willard E. "Pee Wee" Hurst, 57, of Talladega, will be 2 p.m. Sunday from the Talladega Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ottis Graves officiating. Burial will follow at the Mid Way Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends and the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. Mr. Hurst passed away April 1, at Citizens BMC. Survivors are, wife, Brenda Lawson Hurst, of Talladega; one daughter, Melissa Hurst Harvell, of Talladega; one son, Patrick Eugene Hurst, of Talladega; his father, Ralph Hurst, of Talladega; two brothers, Paul & Gary Hurst, of Talladega; four grandchildren, Patrick Wayne Hurst, Colby Neal Harvell, Candice Marie Johnson, Lauren Brooke Harvell. Mr. Hurst is preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Hurst. Talladega Police Dept and local Law Enforcement will serve as active Pallbearers.
Mr. Hurst was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County. He was a member of the West End Church of God. He served in Law Enforcement in Talladega County for over 25 years. He was the former Chief of Police in Lincoln, and had spent many years with the Talladega Police Dept serving as Captain of the Patrol Division and Captain of the Detective Division. He was also a former member of F.O.P. Lodge #26.
Niccum
ANNISTON - Services for Mary H. Niccum, 74, of Anniston, will be 6 p.m. this evening at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Michael Cox officiating. Burial will be in Sebetha, Kan. with Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Niccum died Thursday at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
Survivors include her six children, Gordon Mead Roby, Jr., of California, Gregory Mark Roby, of Kansas, Gerald Martin Roby, of Colorado, Georgette Marlene Fowler, of Anniston, Gene Mathew Roby, of North Carolina, and Ginger Marie Roby Moses, of Munford; two brothers, Jack Mickle, George Mickle and a sister, Louise Skinner, all of Georgia; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Niccum sang in church, and on radio and TV with Eddy Arnold and Ray Price. She was saved while attending CWC. She was loved by all who knew her, especially the nieces and nephews that she cared for at a very early age.
Tyler
ANNISTON - John Garland Tyler, III, of Anniston, and Tampa, Fla., entered into rest on March 30, following a motorcycle accident near Anniston, at the age of 55 years, 9 months. Mr. Tyler was the beloved husband of Shari Moslehi Tyler, and the loving father of two daughters, Arianna Leigh Tyler and Lauren Rebecca Tyler of Tampa, Fla. He was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on July 6, 1949, the son of the late John Garland Tyler, Jr. and the late Eloise Hughes Tyler.
Following his birth, his family returned to Anniston, where he was educated in the public school system. After graduating in 1967 from Anniston High School, where he was a member of the band, Mr. Tyler entered Birmingham Southern College and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1971, and subsequently worked in Cologne, Germany; Oakland, Calif.; and Florida. Upon his return to Anniston in 1973, he earned his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying for the rest of his life. In 1974, he entered the University of Tennessee School of Architecture, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree with High Honors. Following architectural positions in Birmingham and Florence, Ala., he was an architect for Intergraph Corporation, Huntsville, Ala., for six years.
In 1988, he became Corporate Architect for Publix Supermarkets, Lakeland, Fla., and married his wife Shari in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1993. After subsequent positions as a senior project manager with central Florida firms in the late 1990's, he returned with his family to Anniston in 1998 as a partner in Dean-Tyler Architects, and to care for his aging mother until her passing in 2003. Following the death of his partner, he continued in private practice as John Tyler & Associates, Architects LLC, in Anniston, designing for numerous educational, commercial, and church clients, including First Baptist Church of Anniston, Long Leaf Lodge, and the Anniston School System. In recent years, he also developed real estate interests near his home in Florida and in Alabama.
Mr. Tyler was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Anniston Morning Rotary Club and Parker Memorial Baptist Church. His firm was active in volunteer work for Meals on Wheels. He was a life-long avid outdoor enthusiast, participating in such activities as skydiving, skiing, diving, motorcycling, hang-gliding, flying, mountain climbing, boating, and soaring. He was widely known as a kind, generous man with a gentle sense of humor, who was a friend to all who knew him, and who provided strong, quiet support to those he loved. Services will be at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 3, at Brown & Kughn Funeral Home, 620 Golden Springs Road, Anniston, Ala., 36207. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Entombment will be in Forestlawn Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be David Mullins, Larry Pinson, Clay Slate, Bill Halliday, Clayton Angell, Ryon Slaughter, Karl Wasner, and George Salmon. Honorary pallbearers will be Malcolm Street, Lowry Hobbs, Fred Couch and Lolan Granger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Anniston Museum of Natural History, P.O. Box 1587, Anniston, Ala. 36202.

ANNISTON - Graveside services for Roosevelt Baker, 79, of Anniston, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Eden Hills Cemetery
in Anniston with the Rev Randy B. Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hill Cemetery
with Anniston Funeral Service in charge. Mr. Baker died Friday at Floyd E. Tutt Fann State Veteran Home in Huntsville.
Survivors include two sisters, Essie Mae Holmes and Eve Moten, both of Anniston; one brother, Charles Baker, of New York. Mr. Baker was a native of Alabama most of his life and a member of the Murray Temple CME Church and a member of the U.S.S.C. Social and Savings Club and a U.S. Army Veteran.

BIRMINGHAM - Services for Mrs. Hettie P. Bulger, of Birmingham, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Babbie Baptist Church, in Babbie, Ala. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 p.m. at Foreman Funeral Home in Andalusia. Mrs. Bulger passed away on Monday, April 4, in Anniston. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Britt Madison, of Anniston; her son, Joseph Charles "Jody" Britt, of Birmingham, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel is handling the local arrangements.

DILLON, S.C. - Services for Mr. Larry Demison Hawkins will be 3 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. G.L. Lauderdale officiating. Burial will be in Anniston Memorial Gardens with Goodson Funeral Home in charge of services. There will be a public visitation Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m at the funeral home. Mr. Hawkins will lie in state one hour prior to service at the church. Mr. Hawkins died Friday, April 1, at his residence in Dillon, S.C.
Survivors include his wife Bunnie Hawkins, of Dillon, S.C.; two step-daughters, Angela Smith and Carrie Smith, both of Dillon, S.C.; two grandchildren, Shayla Smith and Ca'marree Whiterspoon, both of Dillon, S.C.; six sisters, Mary Welch, Barbara Hawkins, Charlotte Hawkins, Jenice Hawkins, Stella Hawkins, Veronica Hawkins, all of Anniston; two brothers, Lonnie Hawkins and William Hawkins, both of Anniston.

Holley
OXFORD - Memorial services for Mr. Jimmy Holley, 57, of Oxford, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Iron City Cemetery, with the Rev. James Smith officiating and Gray Brown Service in charge of arrangements. Mr. Holley died Tuesday in Anniston.
Survivors include his sister, Louise Coleman, of Anniston, Mr. Holley was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He was a Vietnam Veteran in the Army. Preceded in death by his parents James and Winnie Holley, a brother, Jack Holley and a sister, Mary Vanzant.
Mathews
ASHLAND - Memorial graveside services for Mr. Charles Thomas "Pete" Mathews, 87, of Ashland, Ala. will be Friday April 8, at 1 p.m. at the Ashland City Cemetery
with Dr. Bill Meehan, Dr. John Holloway, the Rev. David Holmes and Guin Robinson officiating. Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland will be in charge of arrangements. There will be no public viewing but a visitation is scheduled for tonight April 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland. He is survived by one nephew, Charles B. Mathews, of Jacksonville, one great niece; two great-nephews and one great-great-niece. Caregivers were Gerald and Becky Boddie of Ashland.
Mr. Mathews passed away Tuesday, April 5, at the Clay County Hospital. He was born in Ashland, Clay County, Alabama in 1917. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashland. He received his elementary and secondary education in Ashland, later graduating from Jacksonville State Teachers' College. He entered the United States Army at outbreak of World War II, served four years and was discharged as First Lieutenant; following Army Service, he received law degree from University of Alabama, Practiced law in hometown of Ashland until residents of that district elected him to Alabama House of Representatives. During the next 20 years, he served the people of Alabama in the halls of their legislature in both Senate and House. He was voted the outstanding State Senator by the Alabama Capitol Press, Radio and Television Corps. He was voted most effective member of the House of Representatives while serving in that body.
Mr. Mathews was the only Alabamian to serve as both chairman of the House Ways and Means and the Senate Finance and Taxation committees. Upon completion of his legislative offices, Mr. Mathews was elected to the Alabama Public Service Commission concluding 24 years of elective service to the State of Alabama. He also attended a number of Democratic National Conventions as a delegate. Mr. Mathews served for 19 years as the in-house counsel for the Alabama Farm Bureau and its insurance company. He followed that service as the legislative liaison for the Alabama Retail Association in both Montgomery and Washington D.C. from 1981 to 2005. In 1967, Governor Lurleen Wallace appointed Mr. Mathews to the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees where he served 36 years, which included 20 as president pro-tem. He served as President of the Alumni Association and was named Alumnus of the year in 1962. He established two funds at JSU, which upon his death would provide tuition scholarships in perpetuity for the Clay County students.
The board of trustees honored Mr. Mathews in 1974 by naming the largest coliseum in northeast Alabama as the Pete Mathews Coliseum. The JSU baseball field also bears his name. Mr. Mathews was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University in 1990. Mr. Mathews has contributed more than $1 million to the establishment of the Pete Mathews Foundation for tuition scholarships to students to Jacksonville State University. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Jacksonville State University from 1967 to 2002. During his legislative years, he was known as the "Bald bachelor from the backwoods" who was lauded for his hard work, intelligence, tolerance of differences and his ability to never let political fights interfere with friendship. Pete had a statewide reputation as a gifted orator and newsmen considered him one of the state's outstanding humorists. He was well known for his quick wit, incomparable sense of humor and innate courtesy. He was quietly benevolent and motivated only by his desire to give others a helping hand as he himself had been helped.

ANNISTON - Service for Ms. Anita Henry McCarty, 48, of Anniston, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Moss Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Simcoe Methodist Cemetery, Cullman, Ala. with Pastor Tommy Reaves, assisted by Dr. Edwin Hayes. Visitation will be from 5:30-9:00 p.m. today.
Survivors include her son Jonathan Haze McCarty; mother, Edna McGukin Henry; sister, Holly Lawson and her husband, David; nephew, Nathan Lawson and Angeline Lawson. Ms. McCarty was a graduate of Cullman High School, Class of 1975. She was a member of the Honor Society and Cullman High School Band. She graduated from the University of Alabama Nursing School in 1979. After college, Anita served as head nurse of the emergency room and served in the United States and Germany. Anita retired from the U.S. Army as a Captain at Ft. McClellan in Anniston. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Marland Henry; brother, Steven Henry; and infant sister, Kathy Dale Henry. There will be a memorial service held for Anita Henry McCarty at United Fellowship Baptist Church in Alexandria at a later date. Contributions can be made to United Fellowship Baptist Church P.O.
