JESSE MATHIS

PELL CITY- Funeral services for Jesse Mathis, 85, will be March 25 at 2 p.m. at Coosa Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon Lee and Rev. Clyde Pettus officiating. Burial will be in the Coosa Valley Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Mathis died March 23. He was a lifelong resident of St. Clair County, and was a member of Coosa Valley Baptist Church where he served as a trustee. He was also the Trustee in Charge of Coosa Valley Cemetery. He was retired from United Chair Company.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Vivian Winslett and Dorothy Jean Mathis; and one son, Jesse Wayne Mathis.

He is survived by his daughters, Betty Hughes of Cropwell, Janice Dunaway of Ohatchee, Susie Rich of Prattville, and Carolyn Hathcock of Cropwell; sons Benny Mathis of Pell City and Roger Mathis of Cropwell; 22 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Kilgroe Funeral Home will direct the services.

RITTA ROBINSON

RAGLAND - Ritta Robinson, 78, died March 22 at Country Way Hospice.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

HENRIETTA STOREY

TALLADEGA - Henrietta Storey, 80, died March 22 at Citizens Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

WILLIAM JOSEPH WINTERS

SYLACAUGA- Memorial services for William Joseph Winters, 78, will be Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Joy Chalissery officiating.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel.

Mr. Winters died March 23 at his residence.

A native of McAllister, Okla., he moved to Sylacauga in 1962, and was associated with Thompson-Weinman Marble Company as a mining engineer. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri School Of Mines and Metallurgy, with a degree in mining engineering. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and a member of Missouri School Of Mines Alumni Association. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, as a radio operator and flew several missions across the CBI (China, Burma, India) Hump. His hobby was ham radio, and he loved poetry, classical music and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Winters of Sylacauga; five daughters, Cathy Hughes and husband Jay of Childersburg, Cindy Gammon and husband Rick of Shellville, Ga., Carolyn Winters of Sylacauga, Cecilia Lang and husband Kyle of Birmingham, and Chris Benton and husband Bruce of Chelsea; four grandchildren, Rick Gammon, Christopher Gammon, Matthew Gammon, and Brynn Gammon; two step grandchildren, Chad Benton of Knoxville, and Matthew McCune of Auburn; and one special cousin, Dr. Hal Harle of Seguin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lakeside Hospice in Pell City ; the JoAnn Barnett Endowed Scholarship Fund, UAB Gift Records Office, 1530 3rd Ave. South, AB 1230, Birmingham, 35294; or a favorite charity.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the services.

ELSIE HAWKINS PELHAM LAWRENCE

TALLADEGA — Memorial service for Elsie Hawkins Pelham Lawrence, 81, will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Talladega with the Rev. Robert Blackwell officiating.

Mrs. Lawrence died March 26 at her residence with her children by her side. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lt. Col. Charles Clay Pelham and the Rev. A. Stratton Lawrence. She was born in Tohatchi, N.M., and grew up in Alexandria. She attended Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama. Her parents were Charles Howard Hawkins and Pearl Mauldin Hawkins of Alexandria. Mrs. Lawrence had lived in Talladega since 1973. She was active in the Talladega Arts Council, the April in Talladega Pilgrimage, Heritage Hall Museum and her beloved St. Peter's Episcopal Church. An avid bridge player and a strong advocate for civic responsibility, she enjoyed participating in her community.

She is survived by four children, Thomas Maxwell Pelham of Alexandria, Peter Atkinson Pelham and wife Melody Pelham of Weaver, Penny Pelham Boyanton and husband Earl Boyanton of Arlington, Va., and Charles Morris Pelham and wife Josephine Pelham of Chevy Chase, Md.; one brother, Glenn Mauldin Hawkins and wife Joy Hawkins of Anniston; three grandchildren, Melissa Christine Dubois and husband Rodney Dubois of Standish, Maine, William Pelham McNulty and wife Shanyn McNulty Arlington, Va., and Wendy Pelham Daunheimer and husband Alec Daunheimer of Sterling, Va.; and four great-grandsons, Maxwell Edward Dubois, Andrew Brewer Dubois, Liam Stratton McNulty and Declan William McNulty.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Power, Thomas Robbs, Benton Cogburn, William Wesley, T.E. Christenberry, William Lawrence, James Heacock Jr., Dr. David Roberts, Jason Smith and Dr. F.M. (Mac) Toole.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 208 E. North St., Talladega, Ala., 35160.

The family will receive friends after the service in Bingham Hall.

Bill Perry of Usrey Funeral Home has assisted the family.

Hospice care was provided by Lakeside Hospice Inc. of Pell City.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

RITTA ROBINSON

RAGLAND — Funeral service for Ritta (Granny Rit) Robinson, 78, of 507 Morning Star Road, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Wallace Pinson officiating. Burial will be in Morning Star Cemetery.

Mrs. Robinson died March 22 at Country Way Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Robinson and Rosetta Cass Robinson; seven sisters; and five brothers. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where she was president of the senior choir and was a member of the Missionary Society. She was a part-time employee of the St. Clair County Health Department.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Jean Gover of Ragland; one sister, Lillie Mae Swain of Ragland; one brother, Archie Robinson of Ragland; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

SYLACAUGA — Henrietta P. Ballard died March 25.

SYLACAUGA — W.T. Greathouse died March 25 at Baptist Medical Center Montclair in Birmingham.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

SYLACAUGA — Aurelia (Mama Sid) King died March 25.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Madden's Funeral Home.

JOE C. SIMMONS

TALLADEGA — Joe C. Simmons, 64, of 312 Dumas Ave., died March 26 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.

MORRIS WHITE

AUBURN — Funeral service for Morris White, 87, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Clay County Funeral Home chapel with Dr. John Jeffers and the Rev. Bruce Willis officiating. Burial will be in Clay County Memory Gardens with full military honors.

Mr. White died March 25 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. He was a native of Clay County and had been a resident of Auburn for more than 50 years. He received his B.S. degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1938 and his MS and Ph.D from Purdue University in 1948 and 1950 respectively. He joined the faculty of the Department of Agricultural Economics of Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1950 in a teaching and research appointment. His teaching was in the areas of agricultural marketing and prices at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He was a favorite teacher on Ag Hill because of his patience, understanding and care of students. His research covered several agricultural commodities with emphasis on poultry and eggs. His research on broiler production and marketing contributed to growth and development of the broiler industry in Alabama from 1950-1980.

He retired in 1982. He was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture and Sigma Xi, the national research honor society. After finishing his undergraduate work at Auburn, he worked for three years with the Farm Security Administration in Talladega, Conecuh and Calhoun counties. He had a distinguished period of military service in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy as a military police with the rank of major. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Auburn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia White; his parents, Karah J. White and Estie Morris White; two sisters, Lona Owens and Freda Reid; and a brother, Horace White.

He is survived by a brother, Harold L. White of North Augusta, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Grant Mattox, John Avery, Donald Coker, Ronald Coker, Steve McDowell, Harold K. White, Bill Handley and Glenn Hickman.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to a favorite charity or to Bethany House Hospice of Auburn or First Baptist Church of Auburn.

Clay County Funeral Home will direct the service.
