RUBY ESTER Gardner HOOKS

SYLACAUGA — Graveside service for Ruby Ester Gardner Hooks, 82, will be Friday at 1 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Frank Posey officiating.

Ms. Hooks died April 16 at Bessemer Carraway Hospital. She was a member of Fairfield First Baptist Church and worked as a nurse’s aide. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael Silas Gardner and Emma Vick Gardner, four brothers and a sister.

She is survived by three daughters, June B. Foshee of Prattville, Virginia Bennett of Adger and Dorthey Fox of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Richard Foshee, Greg Moates, Jay McDavid, Reed Buckner, Bill Veazey and Taylor Moates.

Radney-Smith Funeral Home will direct the service.

TALLADEGA — Charles Savage “Jim” Sims Sr., 83, of Talladega died April 16 at Clay County Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

ANNIE BOWIE

PELL CITY — Annie Bowie, 93, formerly of Pell City, died April 17 at her residence in Birmingham.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Pell City Funeral Service.

RITA WALDROP JONES

LINEVILLE — Funeral service for Rita Waldrop Jones, 72, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home chapel in Lineville with the Rev. Tim Tipton officiating. Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Jones died April 16 at Clay County Hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, had been employed with Wellborn Cabinet Company and was a Baptist by faith.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert L. (Too Tall) Jones of Lineville; one daughter, Donna Hannah of Renfroe; two sons, Don Jones of Ashland and Danny Jones of Pearl River, La.; one sister, Brenda West of Slidell, La.; two brothers, Wendell Waldrop of Ashland and Tim Waldrop of Cragford; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home until service time.

Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville will direct the service.

DAVID RUSSEL McGINNIS

ANNISTON — Funeral service for David Russel (Buddy) McGinnis will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in Anniston.

Mr. McGinnis died March 21. He was born and raised in Weaver. He graduated from Alexandria High School. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1938, he entered the Navy. After 10 years, many battles and fighting in World War II, he left the Navy as a chief petty officer. He met and married Anne Barnes and they raised four daughters. His various professions included: sergeant on the Dade County Police Force, 10 years; self-employed building contractor; retired as assistant chief of operations for the Dade County Port Authority.

He is survived by his daughters, Carole White of Eutaw, Roberta (Bunny) Rentz of Covington, Ga., Kathleen Gonsalves of Miami, Fla., and Robin McGinnis of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Hannah McGinnis of Gainesville, Fla.; sisters, Juanita Triplett of Saks, Joanne Pruitt of Gainesville, Gla., and Vicky Horton of Riverdale, Ga.; one brother, James McGinnis of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes. Association.

Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in Anniston will direct the service.

DOUGLAS D. SNOW

EASTABOGA — Graveside service for Douglas D. Snow, 74, will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Green's Chapel Cemetery in Heflin with the Rev. John Shaddix officiating.

Mr. Snow died April 16 at Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Oxford Quarterback Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Maude Snow, and two brothers, Calvin and Marcelle Snow.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Snow of Eastaboga; daughters, Pat Haywood of Eastaboga, Melissa Glidewell of Oxford, Cassie Love of Talladega and Traci Arnold of Eastaboga; one sister, Mary McClure of Oxford; one brother, Ray Snow of Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chris Crow, Cody Crow, Mike Crow, Patrick Ward, Tim Glidewell and Jeff Arnold.

Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Hubbert and Minor Wynn, Hugh Leemaster.

Miller Funeral Home in Oxford will direct the service.

April 19, 2002

FRANKIE MAE GARRETT

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Frankie Mae Garrett, 48, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Community Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bobby Whetstone officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Garrett died April 15 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald Keith of Sylacauga; one daughter, Shanday Howard of Sylacauga; two sons, Anthony Howard of Sylacauga and Crandall Wilson of Marion, Ind.; three sisters, Betty Borden, Ethel Jean Kendrick and Mattie McElrath of Sylacauga; two brothers, Benjamin Wilson of Anniston and Carl Lee Wilson of Elmore County; and a host of other relatives.

Friends of the family will served as pallbearers and flowerbearers.

Community Funeral Home will direct the service.

MICHAEL GUILLORY

ARLINGTON, Texas — A memorial service for Michael Guillory will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 900 East St. South in Talladega.

CHARLES SAVAGE SIMS

ASHLAND — Funeral service for Charles Savage Sims, 83, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church with Bishop James Robert King officiating. Burial will be in Oldfield Cemetery in Ashland.

Mr. Sims died April 16 at Clay County Nursing Home. He was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, a graduate of Clay County Training School, received a B.S. degree and M.S. degree from Tuskeegee Institute, and taught at Tuskeegee Institute, Morehouse College, Spellman College and the University of Jacksonville, Fla. He was a former employee of the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., was granted a direct commission of first lieutenant in the United States Air Force by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and worked for President and Mrs. Roosevelt.

He is survived by two sons, Charles Savage Sims II and Kenneth Maurice Sims of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one sister, Sue Ann McClain of Ashland; one brother, Horace Sims of Talladega; one grandchild, and other relatives.

Nephews will serve as active pallbearers, and deacons of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

CALDONIA SWAIN

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Caldonia Swain, 92, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kingston Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Cornelius Brown III officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Swain died April 15 at Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega. She was a member of Kingston Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Swain Sr.; two sons, E.V. Swain and Freddie Swain Jr.; her parents, Freeman and Eppie Swain; seven sisters; and three brothers.

She is survived by her daughters, Essie Ree Williams and Ella Bell Garrett of Long Island, N.Y., and Georgia Ann Dates of Talladega; her sons, A.D. Swain and Patrick Swain of Talladega and Clarence Swain of Piedmont; 42 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

BRYCE EUGENE WILLIAMS

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Bryce Eugene Williams, 74, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Talladega Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Knight officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park.

Mr. Williams died April 17 at his residence. He was a native of Winfield, Ala., and had been a resident of Talladega for the past 40 years. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Talladega, a veteran of World War II and was retired from Crown Textiles.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Edna Williams of Talladega; two daughters, Linda Heath and husband Ryber of Jacksonville and Donna Webster of Talladega; six sons, Larry Williams and wife Wendy of Talladega, Kenny Williams and wife Kelly of Talladega, Dale Williams and wife Jean of Columbiana, Ricky Williams and wife Mitzi of Munford, Gary Williams and wife Kim of Talladega and Adam Williams of Talladega; one sister, Jean Snow of Talladega; one brother, Frank Williams of Prattville; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Lee Williams, Christopher Williams, Dustin Williams, Logan Williams, Wes Smith and Darren Ray Smith.

Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Talladega Funeral Home will direct the service.
