HARPERSVILLE - Funeral services for Ruth E. Barber, 69, will be Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel with Dr. John Lee Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Harpersville Cemetery. Mrs. Barber died Saturday, Sept. 24 at Brookwood Medical Center. GARDENDALE - Funeral services for Katherine Burrow Houston, 68, will be Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Kilgore and the Rev. Keith Brakefield officiating. Burial will be in the Childersburg Cemetery. Mrs. Houston died Sunday, Sept. 25 at Sunbridge Care & Rehab for Gardendale. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a member of North Gardendale Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Tom Burrow; mother, Terri Burrow; four brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by son, Kevin Houston and wife B.J. of Hayden; daughters, Kathy Deville and husband Don of Alexander, La. and Kay Karrah and husband Kelly of Gardendale; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law. VINCENT - Funeral services for James Robert Roper, 63, were at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at First Baptist Church in Vincent. The Rev. Joe Stone, Dr. H. Lindy Martin, Dr. John Lee Taylor and Dr. K. Randolph Joines officiated. Burial was in Vincent City Cemetery. Mr. Roper passed away on Saturday, Sept. 24 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Wilsonville to Robert Weaver Roper and Annie Lois Roper. He was a retired Deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. He also owned and operated Roper Automotive in Vincent. He is survived by his wife, Patricia M. "Pat" Roper of Vincent; sons, Max Alan (Evie) Roper and Jim Roper II; brother, Harold (Anita) Roper of Wilsonville. Burial will follow from the Pine Hill Memorial Park. Mrs. Lackey passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Citizens BMC in Talladega. She was a native of Talladega County and lived in Houston, Texas for 20 years before returning to Lincoln seven years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Melissa Diane Ray and her father, Fred Horn. She is survived by her husband, Rick Lackey of Lincoln; daughter, Terri Payne of Talladega; sons, Denny Ray Jr. of Gadsden and Jayme Lackey of Lincoln; sisters, Sandra Patterson of Talladega and Jennifer Highfield of Panama City, Fla.; brothers, Leslie Horn of Talladega, Ronald Horn of Munford, Michael Horn of Talladega, and Kenny Horn of Talladega; her mother, Ara Hallman Horn of Talladega; and four grandchildren. MATTHEW TALBOT BARNHILL

FAIRHOPE — Matthew Talbot Barnhill, a native of Eatonton, Georgia, and a resident of Fairhope since 1997, died Friday, October 21, 2005, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope. He was born January 16, 1911, to the late Florence Octavia Talbot and John Woodfin Barnhill. After receiving a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1932, he secured a position as a dye chemist with Avondale Mills in Sylacauga, Alabama. He retired from Avondale in 1976 as Vice President of Research and Development. At the mill he met Mary Ann Workman, who became his wife on November 18, 1938. Mr. Barnhill was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 23 in Sylacauga for 13 years and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award. In 1946 he was honored by the Sylacauga Junior Chamber of Commerce as "Man of the Year". He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sylacauga, which he served as deacon and elder; in 1997 he was honored by the church Session as Elder Emeritus. He was also a master Mason and member of Coosa Valley Lodge No. 929 of F&AM of Alabama. He was a lifelong philatelist and member of the Eastern Shore Stamp Collectors club; he also had a keen interest in rocks and geology. Mr. Barnhill was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years; an infant daughter, Ann; and two sisters, Virgil Orvin Hardon Reynolds and Elizabeth Reid Barnhill Gupton. He is survived by his son, Matthew T. Barnhill Jr., and daughter-in-law, Suzanne of Fairhope; two grandchildren, Matthew T. Barnhill III of Portland, Oregon, and Virginia Vaughan Barnhill Damdar of Houston, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 27. The family suggest that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Norton Avenue, Sylacauga, AL 35150. Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home & Crematory in Fairhope will direct the service.

WILLIS TONY (W.T.) COOKSEY JR.

SYCAMORE — Funeral services for Willis Tony (W.T.) Cooksey Jr., 85, will be Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Parker and the Rev. Jimmy Dale Abrams officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Cooksey died Saturday, Oct. 22 at Sylacauga Health and Rehab. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church where he served as deacon and taught Sunday school. He was retired from Avondale Mills with 40 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee Cooksey; and great grandson, Jason Machen. He is survived by sons, Thomas Lee Machen of Talladega, Tommy Machen of Coosa County, and Mike Machen of Douglasville, Ga.; daughter, Gaye Hickman of Sycamore; grandchildren, Johnny Machen and Tammy Machen; eight great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brother, Grady Cooksey of Birmingham; friend and caregiver, Shirley Green; Pallbearers will be his Sunday school class. MARY WILMA BAKER ELLIOTT

TALLADEGA — Mary Wilma Baker Elliott, 99, formerly of Tuscaloosa and Columbiana, died Sunday, October 23, at the home of her daughter in Birmingham following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Elliott was born in the farming community of Fourmile, Alabama, near Wilsonville, on August 8, 1906, to James Lucious and Louella Bell Baker. She graduated from Shelby County High School in 1924, received a normal degree from Jacksonville State Teachers College and later graduated from Alabama College. She taught the primary grades in the public schools of Shelby County and Tuscaloosa County for 34 years. Mrs. Elliott was a member of the First Baptist Church of Talladega, Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society of women educators, Alabama Education Retirees Association, and the Andrew Jackson Chapter of the DAR, which she previously served as regent. She had been a Red Cross volunteer and a docent at Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall. She assisted her husband, Dr. Woodrow W. Elliott in his 10-year tenure as president of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind in Talladega. She was an accomplished gardener and she pursued many interests, including needlework, genealogical research, and stamp and coin collecting. She leaves behind a wide circle of devoted friends and former students. Mrs. Elliott was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years and her son, Frank Baker Elliott. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Elliott Cobb (Buell) of Birmingham; four grandsons, Mark Elliott and James B. (Jamie) Elliott of Mt. Pleasant, SC, B. Wilson (Will) Cobb of Birmingham and Buell B. Cobb III (Tad) of Austin, Texas. The funeral service will be Wednesday, October 26 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Talladega with Dr. Robert Paul Jr. and the Reverend Ralph Jernigan officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service. The committal service for Mrs. Elliott and reinterment service for Dr. Elliott will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Pinelawn Gardens in Columbiana. Pallbearers are Richard Castleberry of Talladega, J. Michael Cobb of Birmingham, Kenneth Sims of Sylacauga, Edward P. Williamson of Birmingham, and Mrs. Elliott's grandsons. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Elliott Cottages at the Alabama Institute for Deaf & Blind (POB 698 Talladega, AL 35161), Shelby County Historical Society (POB 457 Columbiana, AL 35055), Fourmile Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (Highway 61 Wilsonville, AL 35186), or The Red Door Kitchen nutrition program for the elderly (POB 1261 Talladega, AL 35161).
