ERRIS HERRELL BARNETT

SYCAMORE — Celebration of Life Service for Erris Herrell Barnett, 78, will be Tuesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son North Chapel with the Rev. Herman Parker and the Rev. Bill Dean officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Barnett died Sunday, March 5, at his residence. He was employed for 54 years in the trucking industry and was in demand as a guest lecturer on transportation at such places as Western Kentucky University, The University of South Alabama in Mobile, and The University of Alabama in Birmingham. He trained extensively with Lasalle University and studied executive training courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He also was invited and spoke to a congressional subcommittee on the subject of transportation in Washington, D.C. Mr. Barnett is a past board member of the Alabama Trucking Association, American Trucking Association, lifetime member of Southern Motor Carriers For Rate Conference For The South, East South, and North South. A member of the regulatory committee of ATA and The Governor's Regulatory Committee, serving as past chairman. Mr. Barnett always emphasized that his greatest joy had been the opportunity to speak in some 20 churches from Childersburg to Hartselle and Munford to Huntsville. He served as interim pastor for Calvary Baptist Church for some six months in Childersburg. Mr. Barnett addressed the Alabama Baptist Convention Meeting in Huntsville on the subject of Brotherhood. The Sycamore Baptist Church has been the center of Barnett's life since he joined in April of 1941, at the age of 13. He has served his church as deacon, chairman of the deacon board, finance chairman, building committee chairman, pastor search committee chairman, teacher and Sunday school superintendent. "The Lord has been good to me and my family. Above all my church connection has done more for us than anything else." He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey E. Barnett, R.O. Barnett, and Marion Barnett; and sister, Ella Jo Watkins. Mr. Barnett was married to Nelda Cleghorn Barnett for 58 years and this marriage produced three children, Sandra Barnett Haynes, daughter, and her husband Ronald of Sylacauga, Susan Barnett, daughter, of Birmingham, Gary Barnett, son, and wife Peggy Taylor Barnett of Sylacauga; seven grandchildren, Melissa Lewis, Philip Haynes, Allan Jackson, Nicholas Jackson, Lauren Barnett, Joseph Barnett, and Matthew Barnett; six great grandchildren, Hailey Haynes, Ally Lewis, Hunter Jackson, Heath Jackson, Hannah Haynes, and Henlee Haynes; two brothers, Grady E. Barnett and wife Lucy of Talladega and Clifford Barnett and wife Iris of Sylacauga; sister-in-law, Dean Barnett of Sylacauga; brother-in-law, Wally Watkins of Sylacauga; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Joseph Barnett, Matthew Barnett, Allan Jackson, Nicholas Jackson, Philip Haynes, and Steve Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Mims, Collis Horne, Eleth Luker, Robert Lee Edwards, Johnny Ray Machen, Don Keel, Ronnie McGrady, Andy McGrady, Marshall McGrady, Lyndol Bolton, Jim Greene. Family will receive flowers or donations to Sycamore Baptist Church renovation fund. Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the services.

BILLY JOE CLARK

LINCOLN — Funeral service for Billy Joe Clark, 48, will be Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Usrey Chapel in Talladega with burial in Shadow Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Clark died Monday, March 6, at his residence. He was a native of Georgia but had been a resident of the Lincoln area for the past 17 years. He was a retired automobile mechanic. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Clark; sister, Faye Hanshue; and brothers, David Leon Clark and Bobby Clark. He is survived by his wife, Kathy C. Clark of Lincoln; two daughters, Mary Gaither and Julie Clark, both of Lincoln; a granddaughter, Abygail Gaither of Lincoln; one sister, Judy Stewart of Lincoln; four brothers, Jimmy Clark of Sugar Hill, Ga., Tommy Clark, Steve Clark, and Tim Clark, all of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 9-11 a.m.

Pallbearers will be David Clark, Jim Clark, Jeremiah Sprockaus, Curtis Clark, Johnny Clark, and Scott Reynolds. Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega will direct the service.

JERRY FRANKLIN COOPER SR.

TALLADEGA — Graveside services for Jerry Franklin Cooper Sr., 63, will be Wednesday, March 8, at 11 a.m. from the Pine Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Charlie Bolt officiating. Mr. Cooper passed away March 5, at his residence. Survivors are three daughters, Dawn Case of Oxford, Gina Horn of Higley, AZ, and Jessica Lee of Picayunne, MS; one son, Jerry Cooper Jr. of Oxford; six sisters, Christine Clowers of Birmingham, Sue Demase of Talladega, Sarah Freeman of Talladega, Dot Rowell of Vicksburg, MS, Nina Nabors of Talladega, Diane Matson of Anniston; two grandchildren, Jennifer Cooper and Kelli Case. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents, Jimbo and Lucille Cooper; by a brother, Noble Cooper; and a sister, Jimmie Nell Woods. Active pallbearers are Kevin Hodge, Gene Hodge, Buddy Matson, Charles Wilson, Gene Dye, Lynn Clowers, Gerald Hammonds, and Lewis Price. Mr. Cooper was a native of Talladega County where he lived most of his life and was a former resident of Port Sulpheur, LA, for some 25 years where he worked as an off shoreman welder. He was of the Christian faith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. Talladega Funeral Home will direct the services.

ALTON JOE "DUMUS" DAVENPORT

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Alton Joe "Dumus" Davenport, 69, will be Tuesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with the Rev. Todd Reaves officiating. Interment will be in Marble City Cemetery. Mr. Davenport died Sunday, March 5, at Coosa Valley Medical Center. He served in the Coosa Valley Rescue Squad for several years and retired from the Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by his son, Glenn William Davenport; parents, Harvey and Gladys Davenport; and brother, John Allen Davenport. He is survived by his wife, Joann Davenport; son, Randall J. Davenport; step-son, Tim Thacker, all of Sylacauga; daughter, Sherri Lynn Talton of Tallassee; step-daughter, Donna Nickolson of Goodwater; four grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and 11 step-great grandchildren. LINCOLN — Funeral services for Mavis H. Griffin, 87, will be Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at Kilgroe Chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Finley Holbrook officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln City Cemetery. Mrs. Griffin died Sunday, March 5, 2006. She had lived in Lincoln since 1946; was retired from Anniston Army Depot; a member of Lincoln Baptist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Griffin. She is survived by two sons, William E. (Janet) Griffin and Robert C. (Lesa) Griffin; three sisters, Freeda Hudson, Eltia Mae Feese, and Rhonda Hawkins; two brothers, Odom Hawkins and Wendall Hawkins; and three grandchildren, William Frederick Griffin, Ryan Mathew Griffin, and William Tanner Griffin. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lincoln Cemetery Fund.

JAMES A. LAMBERT SR.

PIEDMONT — Mr. James A. Lambert, Sr., 70, former resident of Talladega, died Tuesday Feb. 28, at Anniston Regional Medical Center. Mr. Lambert was born on Oct. 31, 1935, in Pell City, the son of the late James Robert & Minnie Juanita Lee Lambert. He had been a resident of Piedmont and Calhoun County for the past 15 years. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Lambert served as a police officer with Ohatchee & Talladega Police Depts. He was a Veteran of the United States Army having served during Korean War. He was married to the former Ester M. Eddy who survives.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ester M. Lambert; one son, James A. Lambert, Jr. of Talladega; three daughters, Shirley Carlson of Talladega, Diana Gaither of Munford, & Paula Pineda of Indianapolis, Indiana; one brother, Terry Holbrooks of Henderson, NV; one sister, Jennie Jo Hooks of Jacksonville, Fl; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Lambert were conducted on Friday March 3, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of the Folsom Funeral Home with Brother Ronald Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Piedmont Memory Gardens with military rites. Mr. Lambert's grandsons and grandsons-in-law served as active pallbearers. The Folsom Funeral Home of Piedmont was in charge of the arrangements.

RED BAY, AL — Funeral service for David Terry McCurly, 65, will be Wednesday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay with Bro. Billy Turbyfill officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Mr. McCurly died Sunday, March 5, at his residence. He was born August 23, 1940, in Alabama to Tom and Abbie Deason McCurly. He was an electrician for the City of Sylacauga for 38 years and was a Baptist. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Elaine Morris McCurly of Red Bay; two sons, Calvin McCurly and wife Renae McCurly and David McCurly and wife Pam McCurly, all of Sylacauga; one sister, Louise McMahon of Sylacauga; three grandchildren, Kayla McCurly, Nick McCurly and K.J. McCurly; one step-son, Frankie Devall and wife Misty Devall of Fulton, MS; one step-daughter, Gwen Hill and husband Charles Hill of Fairview, MS; five step-grandchildren, Hunter Devall, Shelby Devall, Amanda Johnson, Josh Hill, and Joel Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 7, from 5-8 p.m. and until service on Wednesday at Deaton Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Ray Federal, Josh Hill, Joel Hill, and Gaither Cleveland. Deaton Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

ELIZABETH VINCENT METHVIN

CHEYENNE, WY — Elizabeth Vincent Methvin, 90, of the Life Care Center of Cheyenne died Feb. 15, at the Life Care Center. She was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Lincoln, Ala. She retired from the California State Forestry Service. She married Romain A. Methvin on Dec. 17, 1941, in Reno, Nev. Mrs. Methvin was Baptist and a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church in Susanville, Calif. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Mallery of Cheyenne; three sisters, Bernice Wier of Leeds, Ala., Marjorie Presley of Lincoln, and Mary Blake of Nashville; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Methvin was preceded in death by her husband, Romain A. Methvin; her parents, Thomas and Willie Vincent; four brothers, Arthur Vincent, Jim Vincent, Ernest Vincent, and Ray Vincent; two sisters, Grace Butler and Evelyn McGhee; and one great grandchild. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on March 9, at Blue Eye Baptist Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Harold Hazel officiating. Interment will be in Blue Eye Cemetery in Lincoln. Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega will direct the service.

Mr. Mitchell died Sunday, March 5, at his residence. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 378 in Weogufka, and Zamora Shrine and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Essie Sims Mitchell. Mrs. Varner who died Monday, March 6, at Sunbridge Healthcare Center, was born Oct. 7, 1913, in Chilton County. She was a member of Somerville Church of God. She is survived by three sons, David Varner and wife Janet of Decatur, and Don McGrady and wife Gail, and Billy McGrady and wife Peggy, all of Sylacauga; two daughters, Dee Thornsbury and husband Robert of Trinity, and Je'Ann Lloyd and husband David of Jonesboro, GA; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mrs. Varner's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Champion of Westover, Charlotte Lathem of Talladega, Shirley Chandler of Talladega, Mary Browning of Talladega, Sara Lou Sewell of Ashland; one son, Harvey Wilson of Talladega; two sisters, Florence Patterson of Lineville, and Lois Hightower of Florida; 19 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Mrs. Butler died Monday, March 13, at Talladega Health Care Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by daughter, Iesha Dark of Talladega; father, Mark Edward Reaves of Talladega; seven step-sisters; and brothers, Derrick Dark and Carlton Dark both of Talladega and eight step-brothers. TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Robert Leon Hurst Sr., 79, will be Wednesday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at Usrey Chapel with the Rev. Bob Blankenship and the Rev. Joe Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Hurst died Monday, March 13, in Talladega. He was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County; retired from Kochums Industries; member of Southside Baptist Church where he taught the Youth Class for many years. He was an avid Christian and loved auto racing.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert (Linn) Hurst Jr.; and brother, Tommy Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Annie Ruth Hurst of Talladega; one daughter, Phyllis Clardy and husband Jerald of Talladega; two sons, Steve Hurst and wife Linda of Munford and Kelton Hurst of Carriere, MS; two sisters, Mary Moore of Talladega and Sarah Lumbye of Virginia; two brothers, Billy Hurst and Joe Hurst both of Talladega; six grandchildren, Brandon Clardy and wife April Clardy, Rob Clardy and fiancee Kera Gurley, Mike Cruise and wife Michelle Cruise, Kenny Cruise, Vance Hurst, and Embry Wooten; and four great grandchildren, Parker Clardy, Brittany Cruise, Alexis Cruise and Katelyn Cruise. TALLADEGA — Graveside Rites for James Earl McVay, 64, were Monday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. James Abernathy officiating. Mr. McVay died Saturday, March 11, at his residence. He was a native of Clay County but had lived in Talladega for the past 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie McVay; two daughters, Cindy and Lindy McVay; three brothers, Clifton, Calvin, and Jerry McVay. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth McVay of Talladega; mother, Essie McVay of Ashland; four daughters, Wendy McVay of Talladega, Cameron Williams of Lincoln, Susie Harbin of Lincoln, and Denise Lambert of Alex City; two sons, Chris Horton of Talladega and Stanley McVay of Ashland; four brothers, Charles McVay of Ashland, Bobby McVay of Eastaboga, Wayne McVay of Alex City, and Robert McVay of Kellyton; seven sisters, Effie Little of Alex City, Johnnie Mae McVay of Kellyton, Inez Jones of Kellyton, Glenda Moore of Ashland, Waydene Bishop of Ashland, Ruby Gravette of Kellyton, and Lillion Delee of Alex City; 12 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

COOK SPRINGS — Edward McGregor Moore, 66, died Monday, March 13, at Cook Springs Nursing Home. Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will announce arrangements.

ALVESTER LEE "VESS" SMITH

LINCOLN — Funeral services for Alvester Lee "Vess" Smith, 47, will be Wednesday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at Holy Hill Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ with Elder Wayne Verges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Smith died Friday, March 10, at his residence.

Survivors are his parents, Elder Floyd L. and Lillie Smith of Lincoln; two sisters, Theresa (Samuel Glenn) Richey of Eastaboga, and Mary Dean (Malcom) Wade of Lincoln; and a host of other relatives and friends. Sims Funeral Service will direct.

MARY ANN VORHIES

VANDIVER — Funeral services for Mary Ann Vorhies, 58, will be Thursday, March 16, at 3 p.m. Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel with the Rev. Larry Morris officiating. Mrs. Vorhies died Sunday, March 12, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by a son, Freeman Earl Hackett II; sister, Betty Jean Perry; and father, James Porter Perry. She is survived by two daughters, Denissa Thurman and husband Albert of Vandiver and Lisa Harley of Sylacauga; two daughters-in-law, Darlene Hackett of Fayetteville and Marie Hood of Sylacauga; brother, Charles Perry of Colorado; sister, Shirley Perry of Childersburg; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Owens II, Kimberly Owens, Steven Owens, Renee Hackett, Christopher Harley, Freeman Hackett III, W.B. Harley, and Roger Wilkerson; three great grandchildren, Jose Rivera, Elizabeth Owens, and Maria Rivera; niece, Wendy Williams; and nephew, Jimmy Mims. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 15, from 5-9 p.m. Curtis and Son Funeral Home Childersburg Chapel will direct the services.

BILLY JOE (SPECK) WHITTEN

COLUMBUS, MS — Memorial service for Billy Joe (Speck) Whitten, 74, formerly of Pell City, will be Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at Kilgroe Chapel in Pell City. Mr. Whitten died Monday, March 6, at Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital in Columbus, Mississippi. He was born in St. Clair County on June 28, 1931.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Earle Whitten; four brothers, Lorenze, Lavron, Sam, and Otis Whitten. He is survived by his wife, Helen Whitten; sister, Eleanor Harris; brother, Ross Whitten; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family request in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 515 Lehmberg Road, Columbus, MS 39702 or the St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.
