JERRY WAYNE BATES

Served in the U.S. Navy

Jerry Wayne Bates, 51, of Sylacauga, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Coosa Valley B.M.C.

He was a welder and served in the U.S. Navy.

Bates is survived by his mother, Frances Cruise Rich of Childersburg; two sons, Jerry Wayne Bates Jr. of Alabaster and Stephen Scott Bates of Green Pond; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 18 at Radney-Smith Chapel in Sylacauga with the Rev. Bart Leger officiating.

Burial was in Childersburg City Cemetery, Radney-Smith Funeral Home Inc. in Sylacauga directing.

JOHNNIE EUGENE "GENE" EDMONDSON

Veteran of World War II

Johnnie Eugene "Gene" Edmondson, 80, of Columbiana, died Jan. 25, 2000. Retired from Tom Williams Automotive after 40 years of service, he was a veteran of World War II and a captain in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Adell Isbell Edmondson; three children, Rev. A.M. Stinson Jr. and wife, Glenda, Mary Gene Denny and husband, Robert, and Dell Moody and husband, Freddie; a sister, Faye Edmondson Shirley and husband, Woodrow; a brother, J.W. Edmondson and wife, Margaret; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 27 at Bolton-Brown Chapel. Burial was at Columbiana City Cemetery, Bolton-Brown Service directing.

JAMES BOBBY CECIL GREENE

Veteran of the U.S. Army

James Bobby Cecil Green, 67, of Pelham, died Jan. 26, 2000. Baptized in the Catholic faith, he was an auto salesman and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in France.

He is survived by his son, James Bobby Cecil Greene II of Hueytown; a daughter, Stephanie Green of Riverchase; a brother, T.L. Greene of Sylacauga; two sisters, Muriel Green Barrnett of West Blocton and Joyce Green Lowther of Guntersville; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Connie.

Services were held Jan. 28 at Charter Funeral Home Chapel, Father Mike MacMahon and Rev. Houston Belcher officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Charter Funeral Home directing.

WILLIE JO HASSETT

Chelsea resident

Willie Jo Hassett, 77, of Fairfax Station, Va., died Jan. 20, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha Hassett Taft of Fairfax Station, Va.; her son, Bill Hassett of Vincent; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Sarah Vaughn of Birmingham and Elizabeth Poole of Vincent.

Graveside services were held Jan. 25 at Vincent Cemetery, Rev. Leroy Shaw officiating. Bolton Brown Service directed.

ZONIE HAND LAKEY

Michigan resident

Zonie Hand Lakey, 82, of Flint, Mich., died Jan. 24, 2000.

She is survived by two daughters, Elora Pearson of Huntsville and Rhonda Marsden of Flint, Mi.; two sisters, Edith Morgan of Columbiana and Veomi Kiinstler of Maylene; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Services were held Jan. 26 at Pilgrims Rest Church. Burial was in adjoining, Bolton-Brown Service directing.

DOROTHY WOODS LILLY

Member of Shiloh Baptist Church

Dorothy Woods Lilly, 67, of Montevallo, died Jan. 24, 2000. A life-long resident of Shelby County, she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Society.

She is survived by her children, Andrew Lilly Jr., Dwight Lilly, Myron Lilly, Marcus Lilly, Dorothy Turner, Andrew Wooley, Charlotte Lilly, Vickie Gainer, Beverly Chapple, Joann Davis, Monique Lilly and Porsha Lilly; a sister, Vera Aaron; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 29 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Rev. Rogers L. White officiating. Burial was in Montevallo Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home directing.

DEWITT BRANDON MCNEES

World War II veteran

Dewitt Brandon McNees, 82, of Childersburg, died Jan. 27, 2000.

Born in Vernon, he went on to serve as a Navy SeaBee during World War II in Nagasaki, Japan. He was a retired self-employed house painter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wynona Sanderson McNees; a son, Rhett McNees of Millport; three daughters, Marsha Brasher of Chelsea, Cathy Tracy of Childersburg and Laura Loveless of Sylacauga; grandchildren, Steven McNees of Homewood, Monica Niven of Chelsea, Dennis Brasher of Chelsea, Paige McNees of Alabaster, Christina Loveless of Sylacauga and Victoria Loveless of Sylacauga; seven great-grandchildren, Robbie, Dylan, Matthew, Dakota and Gini Brasher and Brianna and Brantley Niven, all of Chelsea; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Jan. 29, Rev. Thomas Hill Perkins officiating. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery, Bolton-Brown Service directing.

ALLIE B. PALMER

Calera resident

Allie B. Palmer, 77, of Calera, died Jan. 27, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband W.K. Palmer and a grandson, Wesley Palmer.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Ledford and Linda Bishop, both of Alabaster; three sons; Jerry Palmer of Pelham, and Terry Palmer and Jeffrey Palmer, both of Calera; two sisters, Gracie "Pete" Williams of Berry and Julie Kimbrel of McCalla; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 1 at Bolton-Brown Chapel, Rev. Gary Beaves officiating. Burial was in Shelby Memory Gardens, Shelby Memory Funeral Home directing.

LINDET RAY PEOPLES SR.

Montevallo resident

Lindet Ray Peoples Sr., 63, of Montevallo, died Jan. 21, 2000, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center.

She is survived by his wife, Lola Mae Peoples; four sons, Lindet Ray Peoples Jr., Joseph Peoples, James Earl Peoples and Anthony Peoples; two daughters, Janice Johnson and Sonya Peoples; and a host of other peoples.

Services were held Jan. 30 at Faith Baptist Church in Montevallo.

Burial was in Carlton Cemetery, Rev. W.T. Evans officiating the services.

ARLENE MANKIN PFEIFFER

Civic volunteer

Arlene Mankin Pfeiffer died Jan. 30, 2000. A native of Trumball, Neb., she and her late husband, Dr. Ralph Burton Pfeiffer, moved to Birmingham in 1941.

She received her nursing degree from the University of Nebraska and was a member of the Birmingham Cruising Club, Les Meres (Mother's Study Group), Audubon Society and the Alabama Cattlemen's Association. She was also active in preserving nature through planting, gardening and bird watching.

She is survived by her children, Jane Ann Pfeiffer Ford of Decatur, Dr. Ralph Burton Pfeiffer Jr. of Mobile, Christina Pax Pfeiffer Killcreas of Starkville, Miss., and Karl Ian Pfeiffer of Birmingham; 10 grandchildren, Whitney Ford Clemons, Bill Killcreas Aho, Dr. Burton Pfeiffer, Christy Killcreas Dutton, Russ Ford, Cameron Pfeiffer, Kelly Killcreas Land, Ann Ford Pemberton, Ian Pfeiffer and Amelia Killcreas; four great-grandchildren, Abigail Aho, Ford Clemons, Paxton Clemons and Blakley Clemons; a brother, Blake Mankin of Hastings, Nebraska; and two sisters, Izona Best of Williamsburg, Va. and Roena Manchreck of Lewiston, Idaho.

Services were held Feb. 1 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Ridout's Valley Chapel directing.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that a tree be planted in her honor or donations made to Camp Branch United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Brookwood Hospice Group or Rotary Club of Shades Mountain Sunrise Foundation - Barnabas Group.
