FLORA BELL HENSON

Calera resident

Flora Bell Henson, 84, of Calera, died May 5, 2000. She was a member of Calera Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Norma Henson Loftin and son-in-law, Bob Loftin, of Calera; a son, Bobby H. Henson, and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Henson, of Riverchase; five grandchildren, Mark Henson and wife, Paula, of Franklin, Tenn., Mike Henson and wife, Ann, of Hoover, Ben Henson and wife, Adrian of Brookhighland, Tim Loftin and wife, Lynne, of Jemison and Tracy Bush and husband, Paul of Calera; eight great-grandchildren, Alex, Will, Jordan, Bailey, Caroline and Benjamin Henson and Cameron and Connor Bush. Graveside services were held May 10 at Shelby Memory Gardens, Hal Warren and Darryl Nichols presiding. Rockco Funeral Home directed the services.

MOTHER NELLIE M. SAUNDERS

Pastor

Mother Nellie M. Saunders, 77, of Montevallo, died April 27, 2000 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. She was a preacher and served as an evangelist for many years. She had pastored Jesus Temple Church for the past 29 years. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Sanders and Jacqueline Sanders; a son, Jamaah Holmes; a foster daughter, Mamie Mann; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held May 6 at Jesus Temple Church in Montevallo, Rev. Calvin J. Meadows officiating. Burial was in Montevallo City Cemetery, Good Shepherd Funeral Home directing.

LAURA JEAN VINES

Indian Springs resident

Laura Jean Vines, 20, of Indian Springs, died May 5, 2000. She was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. She attended the Hyde School in Woodstock, Conn., was a graduate of Pelham High School and was attending college in Auburn. She also was a member of the church and school choirs and the Girls in Action. The family request memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes. Association.

Vines is survived by her mother, Jean Jenkins of Indian Springs; her father, Larry A. Vines of Alabaster; a step-sister, Brooke Carruthers; aunts, Mary Patricia Vines of Hoover, Sandy Driver and Debbie York, both of Hueytown; aunt and uncle, Donna and Norman Murrell; uncle, Lanny S. Vines; great-aunt and uncles, Eloise and Bud Driver of Hueytown; beloved friends, Nicole Nelson and Ben Chappell; and many other friends. Services were held May 7 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Rev. Buddy Gray and Rev. Neal Glausier officiating. Ridout's Southern Heritage directed the services.

RUBY WHORTON WOOLLEY

Wilsonville resident

Ruby Whorton Woolley, 89, of Wilsonville, died May 6, 2000. She was a former member of McCoy United Methodist Church, graduated from Howard College, now Samford University, and was a retired teacher from Wylam Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Day Woolley. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy W. Clark of Wellsboro, Pa.; grandchildren, Shirley E. Clark of Wilsonville and John L. Clark of St. Louis, Mo.; and a great-grandson, Isaac Hummell Clark; a brother, Dr. Robert J. Whorton of Wilsonville; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held May 9 at Elmwood Cemetery, Rev. Gary Jones, pastor of Four Mile Baptist Church, officiating. Ridout's Elmwood Chapel directed the services.

FRED BONNIE

Author

Fred Bonnie, 54, of Columbiana, died May 13, 2000.

He was born in Bridgeton, Maine, and was a long-time resident of Birmingham.

He was a graduate of the University of Vermont and received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of Alabama.

He was a well-known author. His works include six books on gardening, seven collections of short stories and a novel, "Thanh Ho Delivers," released this spring.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Rhonda Carter of Columbiana; a daughter, Samantha Bonnie; a brother, William Bonnie of St. Albans, Vt.; and a nephew, William Bonnie Jr. of Seatle, Wash.

A memorial service will be held May 17 at 1 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Rev. Jimmy Jones officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angel Flight Southeast ministries or the Literacy Council of Central Alabama.

ROBERT E. BRAZZELL SR.

Former Montevallo resident

Robert E. Brazell Sr., 70 of Racine, Wisc., and formerly of Montevallo, died May 6, 2000, at his home in Racine. He had been employed by the J.L. Case Corp. until his retirement in 1992.

He is survived by his children, Ragina Brazzell Renfro, Patricia Brazzell Young, Robert Brazzell Jr. and Beverly Brazzell Meadows; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Services were held May 12 at noon at Present-Truth Tabernacle in Montevallo, Rev. Calvin Meadows officiating.

Burial was in the Montevallo City Cemetery, the Good Shepherd Funeral Home, Montevallo, directing.

MAMIE RUTH WILSON CHAPMAN

Member of Macedonia Baptist Church

Mamie Ruth Wilson Chapman, 69, of Columbiana, died May 7, 2000. A life-long resident of Shelby County, she was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she served in the Women of Macedonia and Friends Fellowship.

She is survived by her children, Otis Chapman Jr., Charles Henry Chapman, Henry Chapman, Mary White, Dorothy Brown and Olivia Skipwith; sisters, Augusta Noya and Lubertie Ruffin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held May 13 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Rev. Richard Kidd officiating.

Burial was in Wallace-Campbell Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home directing.

ADDISON HAND

Westover resident

Addison Hand, 89, of Westover, died May 12, 2000.

He is survived by three daughters, Emma Lou Lawson of Navuoo, Md., Gayle Horton of Calera and Kay Pate of Columbiana; 20 grandchildren; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren.

Services were held May 16 at Bolton Brown Chapel, Rev. Wayne Pate and Johnny Sims officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Bolton Brown Service directing the services.

RICHARD "PONEY" HORTON

Centreville resident

Richard "Poney" Horton, 85, of Centreville, died May 8, 2000. He was a member of Brent Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner.

He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte and husband, Sonny Nelson, of Fultondale and Bebe Broadhead of Brent; a son, Houston, and wife, Faye Horton, of Marvel; a sister, Yvonne Parsons of Fairfield; two brothers, Lane Horton of Pea Ridge and W.F. Horton of Jemison; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held May 13 at Rockco Funeral Home Chapel, Bob Hope and Dr. Robert F. Crider presiding.

Burial was in Macedonia Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Rockco Funeral Home, Montevallo, directing.

LENNIE M. PAYNE

Alabaster resident

Lennie M. Payne, 103, of Alabaster, died May 9, 2000.

She is survived by a son, Charles Payne, and daughter-in-law, Annie Bell, of Alabaster; a daughter, Frances P. Smoke of Auburn; three grandchildren; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held May 12 at Camp Branch United Methodist Church, Rev. Taylor officiating.

Bolton Brown Service directed the services.

DR. HANCEFORD WALTER HAYES

Member of Foley United Methodist Church

Dr. Hanceford Walter Hayes, 94, of Hueytown, died May 20, 2000. A native of Winston County, he attended Mt. Berry High School near Rome, Ga. and graduated from Shelby County High School. He also graduated from Auburn University, where he was a member of Alpha Psi fraternity. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Association of Federal Veterinarians and the Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medicine. He was also the recipient of two honorary doctorates and was a member of Foley United Methodist Church.

Dr. Hayes practiced veterinary medicine in Knoxville, Tenn., for many years at his small animal hospital. Following his retirement from private practice, he was employed by the U.S. Government for a number of years as a meat inspector.

He was an avid fisherman and after retiring he and his wife moved to Foley, where he continued to enjoy his hobby.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Katherine Wall Hayes and his son, Hanceford Walter "Billy" Hayes Jr.

He is survived by two sisters, Paula Lawrence of Hueytown and Velma Bright of Clanton; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Services were held May 23 at Bolton-Brown Funeral Home. Burial was in the adjoining Cemetery, Bolton-Brown Service directing.
