World War II veteran
Robert A. Hester Sr., 77, of Birmingham, died May 29, 2000.
He was a semi-retired banker and attended Unity Church. He was also a Air Force veteran of World War II, where he was a lieutenant and a fighter pilot and later served as a flight instructor.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Hester and Betty, of Birmingham; a daughter and son-in-law, Amanda Thompson and Mark, of Hoover; brothers, Alfred Hester of Kingsport, Tenn.; and grandchildren, Bobby Hester of Birmingham, Wilson Hester of Birmingham, Sean Hester of Birmingham and Austin Thompson of Hoover.
Services were held May 31 at First United Methodist Church of BIrmingham, Rev. David Comer officiating. Charter Funeral Home directed the services.
WILBUR LEWIS "LOU" HUGHES JR.
Vietnam veteran
Wilbur Lewis "Lou" Hughes Jr., 62, of Ruffin, died May 31 at his residence. Hughes was born September 14, 1937, in Alabama and was a son of Wilbur Lewis Hughes Sr. and the late Elizabeth Garner Hughes. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietname War and was the owner and operator of Hughes Painting and Maintenance Contracting.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Ronald Allen Broderick; and by a sister, Joyce Marie Glass.
He is survived by his father, Wilbur Lewis Hughes Sr. of Montevallo; his wife, Leona Kinard Broderick Hughes; a son, Wilbur Lewis Hughes III of Ruffin; two stepsons, Billy Broderick of Summerville and Rober Broderick of Waterboro; a stepdaughter, Alicia Crosby of Walterboro; a brother, Roger Dale Hughes of Montevallo; two sisters, Bobby Jean Blankenship of Alabama and Betty Jane Faucett of Calera; a grandson, Wilbur Lewis Hughes IV; 10 other grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 3 at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Rev. Kenneth McKaskill officiating. Burial was in the Live Oak Cemetery, Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home directing.
PETER G. LEVINE
Former Alabaster police officer
Peter G. Levine, 57, of Alabaster, died May 31, 2000. He was a long-time resident of Shelby County and an avid fisherman. He was a former Alabaster police officer and had many friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharry Levine of Montgomery; and his brother, Alan Levine of Lake Charles, La.
Services were held June 5 at Charter Funeral Home. Charter Funeral Home directed the services.
The family request that donations be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Levine.
HERMINE BERTHA LINDSEY
Montevallo resident
Hermine Bertha Lindsey, 71, of Montevallo, died June 3, 2000. She was a member of Lime Spring United Methodist Church in Clanton and was a store clerk for Bubba's in Montevallo.
She is survived by a sister, Anita Hauck of Schweinfurt, Germany; a brother, Heinz Benz and wife, Joan, Clanton; a niece, Melody Veazey of Verbena; and two nephews, Heinz Benz Jr. of Hayden and James D. Benz of Clanton.
Graveside services were held June 5 at Elliottsville Cemetery
in Alabaster, Jim Shannon presiding. Rockco Funeral Home directed the services.
ROBERT E. "BOB" LOFTIN
Concord Baptist Church member
Robert E. "Bob" Loftin, 59, of Calera, died May 30, 2000. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Calera. He worked Liberty National for 18 years as senior underwriter, was past Lieutenant Governor in Civitans and was a member of the Calera Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Loftin of Calera; a daughter, Tracy L. Bush and husband, Paul, of Calera; a son, Timmothy Lofton and wife, Lynne, of Jemison; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy M. Loftin of Calera; two sisters, Linda Dorough of Alabaster and Charlotte Pierce of Saraland; a brother, Dan Loftin of Calera; and a grandchild, Connor Bush of Calera.
Services were held June 2 at Calera Baptist Church, Darryl Nichols and Hal Warren presiding. Burial was in Shelby Memory Gardens, Rockco Funeral Home directing.
Memorials may be made to the building fund at Concord Baptist Church in Calera.
DR. LAWRENCE L. MALONE
Former University of Montevallo professor
Dr. Lawrence L. Malone, 84, of Mobile, died May 28, 2000 in Mobile.
He was born Jan. 23, 1916 in Fellowship to John Malone and Dolly Williams Malone. He was a resident of Mobile for 20 years and was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, the Fisher Sunday School Class and a board member at St. Mark's School. he was a past member of Forest Lake United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa and Montevallo United Methodist Church. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Livingston State College and his M.A. and EdD. from the University of Alabama. He was a classroom teacher for four years and served as a secondary principal who was the state coordinator of International Education for one year. He retired as a full professor from the University of Montevallo in 1979 and for 10 years, was the owner and manager of private businesses.
He had worked with public schools and institutions of higher learning throughout Alabama in research, development and dissemination of educational information, techniques and methods.
Dr. Malone spent three years in the Signal Corp. and Air Corp. during World War II. He was also a member of A.E.A., N.E.A., and A.S.C.D. professional organization, was past president of Phi Delta Kappa and past treasurer of Kappa Delta Pi educational fraternity. he held office in the Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette and was a past member of the Montevallo Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister, Ollie, Earlie, Freddie and David Maine of Fellowship, Price W. Malone of Jackson, La. and John C. Malone of Milton, Fla. and a sister, Corrine M. Brannan of Citronelle.
He is survived by his wife, the former Nell Ackeridge of Bayou La Batre, La; four sisters, Ann Davis of Mobile, Frances Curry, Mary Nelson of Chunchula and Mildred Newburn of Mobile; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services were held June 2 at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home directing.

JAMES LEON NIX
World War II veteran
James Leon Nix, 73, of Montevallo, died May 27, 2000.
A naval veteran of World War II, he was a member of Montevallo First Baptist Church, where he was Deacon Emeritus and worked with the homebound ministry. He was also a member of Alabama Power Co.'s Energizer Program.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Nix of Montevallo; a daughter, Nancy Nix Lilly of Alexandria; four sons, Thomas Leon Nix of Saucier, Miss., Michael Wayne Nix of Tuscaloosa, James Murray Nix of Jackson, Miss. and Samuel Ward Nix of Montevallo; two sisters, Lydia Nix Anderson of Houston, Texas and Lula Nix Sherrer of Montevallo; four brothers, William Daniel Nix of Katy, Texas, Mack Aaron Nix of Montevallo, George Archie Nix of Columbiana and John Wesley Nix of Montevallo; and nine grandchildren, Heather, Richard, Daniel, Christopher, David, Jackson, Steven, Samantha and Rachel.
Services were held May 31 at First Baptist Church of Montevallo, Rev. Bart Kingsley and Rev. Jim Evans officiating. Burial was in Shelby Memory Gardens, Rockco Funeral Home directing.
KENNETH LAMAR STANDIFER
Alabaster resident
Kenneth Lamar Standifer, 82, of Alabaster, died May 23, 2000.
He was born in South Alabama. In 1946, he and his wife moved to Alabaster, where he and his brother, Earl, began Standifer Brothers Construction. Several years later, their brother, Dan, joined them in the construction business for a short time. Standifer was a general contractor until he retired. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and attending church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mattie Standifer; four brothers, Paul Standifer, Jake Standifer, Earl Standifer and Dan Standifer; three sisters-in-law, Inez Standifer, Ruth Standifer and Helen Standifer; and one brother-in-law, Shelton Crews.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene Standifer; one daughter, Jackie Carter and her husband, Jerry; two granddaughters, Kendall Carter and Trinity Carter; three brothers, James Standifer, Frank Standifer and Jack Standifer; one sister, Martha Crews; three sisters-in-law, Nuna Standifer, Connie Standifer and Mildred Erwin; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Services were held May 25 at Kingwood Assembly of God in Alabaster, Rev. Ron Cox and Jimmy Carter presiding. Burial was in Still Memorial Cemetery
in Elliottsville, Rockco Funeral Home directing.
JAMES LARKYN WHITE
Veteran of the U.S. Air Force
James Larkyn White, 50, of Pelham, died June 1, 2000. He was a member of the Episcopalian faith and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
He is survived by his wife, Tressia Roberts; his mother, Marylou Roberts of Varysburg, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law Jerry Roberts and wife, Kathy, of Chaffee, N.Y.; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Raney of Searcy, Ark.; brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Arkansas, with a memorial service planned at a later date. Chater Funeral Home directed the services.
