Ruby Porter Sullivan
Ruby Porter Sullivan, a native of Prichard and a resident of Wagarville, died Aug. 17, 2006 at a Mobile hospital. She was 85. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James Owen Sullivan Sr., two sons, James "Jimmy" Owen Sullivan Jr. and John Michael Sullivan.
She is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Wilson) Beesley of Satsuma; two sons, Kevin (Lisa) Sullivan and Larry (Shelby) Sullivan, both of Wagarville; daughter-in-law, Leona Sullivan of Wagarville; four sisters, Josephine Bailey and Jewel Bertolotti, both of Mobile, Delia (Bruce) McDonald of Monroeville, Faye (Claude) Sheffield of Mexia; two brothers, Bobby Busby of Mobile and Freddie Porter of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Aug. 19 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Wagarville. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
Pallbearers were John Keith, Doug Flowers, Jim Wheat, Buddy Wheat, Jim Callen and Jack Greer.
Shirley Marie Wade
Shirley Marie Wade, 54, a retired nurse and member of the First Pentecostal Church in Jackson, died Aug. 22, 2006 at her residence in Jackson.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Wade of Jackson; son, Joseph Wade of Jackson; three brothers, Don Mattingly of Charleston, Ind., Tommy Mattingly of Frankfurt, Ky. and Gerald W. Mattingly of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Carla Buchold of Evansville, Ind. and Bonnie Vandunk of Newburg, Ind. and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 24 (today) at 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment will be in Cantuche Cemetery
on Highway 69 between Salitpa and Coffeeville.
Jonetta Edgar
Jonetta Edgar, 45, a resident of Zimco, died Aug. 16, 2006 at her residence in Zimco. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Zimco.
She is survived by her husband, Frazier Edgar Sr. of Grove Hill; three sons, Jeraine Edgar, Christopher Edgar and Frazier Edgar Jr., all of Zimco; three daughters, Christina Edgar and Shaquatta Edgar, both of Zimco and Shaquanna Edgar of Germany; five sisters, Dianna Dickinson of Thomasville, Lisa Dickinson Malone and Karene Dickinson, both of Grove Hill, Darlene Calhoun of Walker Springs and Lorene Dickinson of Jackson; four brothers, Evan Calhoun of Anamosa, Iowa, Edward Dickinson of Houston, Texas and Tracy Dickinson and Deon Dickinson, both of Grove Hill and eight grandchildren. The funeral service was Aug. 23 at Mt. Zion No. 2 Baptist Church in Grove Hill. Burial was in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Nettie G. Fox
Nettie Gray Fox, a resident of Walker Springs, died Aug. 21, 2006 at Mobile Infirmary at the age of 76. She was employed as a nurse's aide. Amember of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Walker Springs, she served as a Crusader counselor, church secretary, president of the Senior Missionary and Matron bands and the Pastor's Aid, a member of the senior choir and was serving on the finance and program committees. She was also a member of the Union Missionary Baptist District where she served as the secretary for the Association and Women's Convention and an instructor for the Sunday School Congress.
Survivors include her two daughters, Vida Johnson of Eight Mile and Vera Williams of Jackson; seven sons, Henry Scott of Inglewood, Calif., M. Joe Scott, Paul Scott and Tommie Scott, all of Los Angeles, Calif., Edward Scott, Benny Scott and Gregory Scott, all of Walker Springs; sister, Rosie Lee Jemison of Walker Springs; two brothers, Theodore Pritchett of Walker Springs and Cleon Pritchett of Woodbridge, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral hour at 11 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Walker Springs. Burial will be in the Hotel Hill Cemetery
in Walker Springs with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Robert Lee McKinnis
Robert Lee McKinnis, a resident of Chatom, died Aug. 16, 2006 at his home at the age of 61. He was a retired chemical operator of the Sartomer Company in Chatom. He was a member of the Stonewall Baptist Church of Jordan and the Masonic Lodge No. 777 in Millry.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley McKinnis of Chatom; six daughters, Charolette Scruggs of Chatom, Lomonica Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., Hope McKinnis and Delois McKinnis, both of Chicago, Ill., Christina McKinnis of Baton Rouge, La. and Veronica McKinnis of Anniston, Ind.; three sons, Anthony Scruggs of Ocala, Wayne McKinnis of Chicago and Robert McKinnis Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Lisa Jones and Tasha Kemp, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two adopted sons, Aurtro Scruggs and Arceka Scruggs, both of Birmingham; three adopted daughters, Shanta Scruggs, Virginia Scruggs and Mahogany Claiborne, all of Chatom and many grandchildren. The funeral service was Aug. 21 at Stonewall Missionary Baptist Church in Jordan. Burial was in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
Velma Wilson Duke
Velma Wilson Duke, a native of Winn and a resident of Jackson, died at the age of 92 on Dec. 30, 2007 at her daughter's residence in Mobile. She was a member of McCann's United Methodist Church in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Duke and two daughters, Barbara Edeker and Janiece Duke.
She is survived by a son, Rodney (Alice) Duke of Collins, Miss.; four daughters, Nathalie (Howard) Bricker of Tampa, Fla., Joyce (Lavoyd) Hudson of Mobile, Lena Duke of Jackson and Mary Swift of Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Annie Mae Eberlein of Jackson and Bessie Rudd of Weaverville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was Jan. 2 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Winn with interment in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McCann's United Methodist Church, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.
Edna Earl Dungan
Edna Earl Craft Dungan died at a local hospital on Dec. 26, 2007 at the age of 85. A native of Tallulah, La. and a resident of Coffeeville, she was a homemaker and a member of Ulcanush Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Dungan.
She is survived by two sons, Ronal Gilmer Dungan and Donal Grady Dungan, both of Grove Hill; a daughter, Betty Ann Deas of Coffeeville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was Dec. 27 at the Ulcanush Baptist Church in Coffeeville. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.
Sally Turner Stanley
Sally Turner Stanley, 93, a Prestwick native, died Jan. 1, 2008 at the Washington County Infirmary in Chatom. She attended school at Murphy High School in Mobile and Livingston University, retiring as the head of the medical records department and as a medical transcriptionist at the Jackson Medical Center. A member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Jackson, she also played the piano for many area churches from the time she was 18 until she was 73. She is preceded in death by parents, Nonie Gray and David P. Turner, brother, Sam Turner and sister, Laura Arnold.
Survivors include a brother, Tom W. (Hattie) Turner Sr. of Sunflower; niece, Patricia (George) King of Sunflower; three nephews, Tom W. (Heidi) Turner Jr. of Leroy, David P. Turner II of Ohio and David A. Turner of Sunflower; and one great-nephew, Matt Turner of Daphne.
The funeral services were Jan. 1 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with interment in the Turner family cemetery at Sunflower. Pallbearers were Tom Turner Jr., David P. Turner, David Turner, Matt Turner, Gene Harrell and John Seibert. Honorary pallbearers included Ray Sellers, Bob Downey, Bill Gray, "Pete" Turner and Horace Ball.
Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.
Willard Ed Hasewood Coleman Jr.
Willard Ed Hasewood Coleman Jr., affectionately known as "June Man", a native of Grove Hill and a resident of Clarke County, died Dec. 23, 2007 at USA Medical Center in Mobile. He was 53 years of age. He was preceded in death by parents, Willard Ed Hasewood Sr. and Callie McRand Hasewood and adopted parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Coleman. Living in St. Stephens, Coleman traveled extensively to military sites in several states while under the care of his sister, Daisey and her husband, Emelean. Returning to Jackson, he was a general laborer throughout the Jackson community.
Survivors include a son, Chris Kimbell of Mobile; five sisters, Daisey Lee (Emelean) Coleman Taylor of Alexandria, Annie Bell Hasewood of Jackson, Mary Sue (Willis) Bumpers of Robbins, Ill., Bettye Jean (Leon) Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Valarie Fluker of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Forrest Lee (Felicia) Hasewood of Jackson; and three grandchildren.
Services were Dec. 29 at Andrews Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. T.L. Douglas, eulogist. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery
in St. Stephens with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Pallbearers were Timothy Tripp, Nathan Martin, Larry Pernell and Gillis Jenkins.
George King Jr.
George King Jr. died Dec. 25, 2007 at the Jackson Medical Center at the age of 82. A native and resident of Jackson, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Lee King and George King Sr.; a daughter, Deloise K. Jackson; three brothers, Woodrow Thomas, Roosevelt King and Bobby King Sr.; and two sisters, Eddie Ree Martin and Rose Nell Pugh. A retired bridge builder, he was a member of the Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Inez Dean King of Jackson; three sons, Cecil (Ruthie Mae) King Sr. of Jackson, Conrad (Doris) King of Columbus, Ga. and Earvin King of Daleville; seven daughters, Emma (Randy) Brown, Claresa (Johnny) Hamilton, Bettye (Chester Wade) Tiggs, Yvonne King, Sharon (Antonio Sr.) Crayton, all of Jackson and Nettie King and Carrie (Clarence) Quaites, both of Mobile; one god-daughter, Deloise (Rob) Cross of Chester, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Carolyn) Dean of Jackson and Edmond (Elba) Dean of Mobile; four sisters-in-law, Mary Williams, Ethel Poellnitz, both of Jackson, Helen (Donald) Pettway of Des Plains, Ill. and Alma King of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 30 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Dec. 29 at the Jackson Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Purifoy, pastor and eulogist. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery
with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Pallbearers were his grandsons.
Ginger V. Gilmore
Ginger V. Dunigan Gilmore died on Dec. 23, 2007 at the age of 88. Preceded in death by her son, Ronnie W. Gilmore; a sister, Vessie Thompson; two brothers, James Dunigan Jr. and Columbus Dunigan Sr. Mrs. Gilmore was a retired educator of over 40 years with the Clarke County Board of Education, an alumni of Alabama State University, a member of the Alabama Education Retiree Association, vice president of the Women's Auxiliary-Bladon Springs Association, instructor of the Bladon Springs Congress of Christian Education, a member of the Clarke County Voter's League, registrar for the Clarke County Board of Registrars and a member of the Alabama Democratic Conference. She was also a member and Sunday School teacher at the St. Paul Baptist Church of Salitpa.
She is survived by her husband, Emmitt Gilmore of Salitpa; five children, Gwendolyn (Al) Jarvis of Montgomery, James (Annie) Gilmore of Salitpa, Emmie J. (Pervis) Calhoun of Grove Hill and George E. (Mary) Gilmore and Jessie R. (Hazel) Gilmore, both of Coffeeville; three adopted children, Barbara Gilmore of Huntsville, Marcus (Kanitra) Gilmore of Salitpa and Derrick (Jawanika) Gilmore of Coffeeville; 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and lifelong friends, Mae E. Todd of Jackson and Pearlie Bell of Coffeeville.
Funeral services were Dec. 29 at the St. Paul Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Pastor Hurley James officiated at the service and Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directed.
