Wilburn Hugh McVay

Wilburn Hugh McVay, a native and resident of Jackson, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 at a local health care facility at the age of 96. He was a retired self-employed merchant, a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson and a veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie B. and Hugh L. McVay, two sisters, Susan G. McVay and Olga Lucille McVay and two brothers, J. Fayron McVay and A. Woodrow McVay.

He is survived by many cousins.

The funeral service was Sunday, Dec. 17 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson.

Sandra Valentine Plymale

Sandra Valentine Plymale, 59, a resident of Coffeeville and a native of Lucedale, Miss., died Dec. 17, 2006 at her residence. She was a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church and was disabled.

Survivors include her husband, Leland Herman Plymale of Coffeeville; brother, Donnie Valentine of Moss Point, Miss. and a sister, Susan Pierce of Tampa Bay, Fla.

The graveside service was Dec. 20, 11 a.m. at Stave Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Jackson with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing.

Grover Smith

Grover Smith, 87, a native and resident of St. Stephens, died Dec. 14, 2006 at an area hospital. He was a retired carpenter who built homes most of his life. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam Pes of St. Stephens and Dorothy Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Louise Boykin of Jackson; brother, Walton Smith of Montgomery; four sons, Wayne (Pearl) Smith of Meridian, Miss., Jimmy (Nell) Smith of St. Stephens, Ron (Donna Sue) Smith and David (Julie) Smith, all of Leroy; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Dec. 16 at the First Baptist Church in St. Stephens with the Rev. Gary Patrick officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with a full honor guard ceremony and St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers were Jason Moseley, Patrick Roberts, Jamey Sullivan, Steve Goldman, Craig Blosser, Bobby Bounds and Buddy Boykin.

Honorary pallbearers were Henry Ford Goldman, Sam Johnson, Dr. Norman Stevens, Fred Smith and Roy Mitchum.

Frankie Leggett Champion

Minister Frankie Leggett Champion, 63, died at Mobile Infirmary on Dec. 16, 2006. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church of Carlton where she was a licensed minister.

She is survived by her husband, Bernard Champion of Toddtown; two daughters, Evangela Nic (Harold) Holson Cowan of Nashville, Tenn. and Trista Nicholson (Johnny Jr.) Ezell of Toddtown; 10 sisters, Daisy Perine, Bernice Perine and Marie Leggett, all of Milwaukee, Wis., Mamie Edmond of Mobile, Linda Burrough of Whatley, Florence Leggett of Walker Springs, Janice Leggett and Felicia Leggett, both of Jackson and Diane Edmond and Gayle Leggett, both of Birmingham; two brothers, Jimmie Leggett of Grove Hill and Chester Leggett of Mobile; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be Thursday, Dec. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Jackson Memorial Funeral Home chapel. The funeral service will be Friday, Dec. 22, 11 a.m. at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Jackson. Interment will follow in the Hotel Hill Cemetery in Walker Springs with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Earl Hunt

Earl Hunt, 78, a native of Alma and a resident of Gainestown, died Dec. 13, 2006 at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. He was a retired truck driver in the logging business. A member of the Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church in Gainestown, he was a steward and member of the choir. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Hunt Sr. and Annie Bell Washington Hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Lee Fox Hunt of Gainestown; eight sons, the Rev. Terry (Faye) Hunt, John (Ardell) Hunt, the Rev. Earnest (Betty) Hunt, Frankie Hunt, Jimmy (Rosemary) Hunt, Michael (Pamela) Hunt, Commissioner Joe Nathan (Valerie) Hunt and Tyrone Hunt, all of Gainestown; three daughters, Millie (Reginald) Mitchell of Bessemer, Allison (Matthew) Creighton of Tuscaloosa and Veronica (Columbus Jr.) Peoples of Gainestown; four sisters, Bessie Mae Rivers, Jessie Mae Kemp, Bernice Hunt and Eula Mae (Spencer) Rivers, all of Gainestown; brother, Johnnie (Tiawanee) Fletcher of Prichard; 36 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren.

The funeral service was Dec. 16 at Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church in Gainestown with a viewing one hour prior to service. Burial was in the church cemetery with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Ruth Davis Terrell

Ruth Davis Terrell, 88, a resident of Montevallo, and former resident of Jackson, died Dec. 15, 2006 at her home. She was a retired manager of a play school. While in Jackson, she was a member of the WomanÂ’s Club and the First Baptist Church for 35 years where she served as a nursery coordinator.

She is survived by a daughter, Peggy T. (Tommy) Walls of Montevallo; three sons, George E. (Patricia) Terrell Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Robert L. (Faith) Terrell of Luray, Va. and Don E. (Sandra) Terrell of Jackson; sister, Margaret D. Eddings of Montevallo; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Dec. 17 at Rocko Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo with Dr. H.L. Martin officiating. Interment was in the Montevallo Cemetery.

Janice M. Brown

Janice M. Brown, 73, a native of Cullomburg and a resident of the Laton Hill community in Chatom, died Dec. 26, 2006 in Mobile. She was a member of the Chatom United Methodist Church. She was co-owner of Brown Farms in Laton Hill. Also a title worker, she was the first female to serve on the Home Savings and Loan Association Board. She was the 1951 valedictorian of South Choctaw County High School.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Vernon Brown of Laton Hill; son, Kenneth H. (Henrietta) Brown of Mobile; daughter, Kimberly B. Miller of Laton Hill; a sister, Lillian M. Prather of Mobile and sister-in-law, Anne Murphy of Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Jessica D. Miller and Laura B. Miller, both of Laton Hill.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Oscar E. Murphy, Thomas F. Murphy and Slater A. Murphy and two sisters, Ethel Lee Holcombe and Tandy M. Talbot.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 28, 2 p.m. at Chatom United Methodist Church in Chatom. Burial will be in the Barlow United Methodist Cemetery in Millry with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

George William Jones

George William Jones, 84, died Dec. 22, 2006 at a local hospital. He was a resident of Fruitdale and a retired self-employed pulpwood dealer.

He is survived by his son, Crawford Jones of Lucedale, Miss.; daughter, Drusilla Turner of Chatom; sister, Clara Mae Sheffield of Jackson; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Dec. 24 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with the Rev. Dewayne Williams officiating. Interment will be in the Fairhope Baptist Cemetery in Chatom.

Pallbearers were Nollie R. Dees, Otis Gray, Don Abston, Calvin Dees, Tom Dees and David Gardner.

Jessie Ray Jordan

Jessie Ray Jordan, 78, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died Dec. 22, 2006 in a local hospital. A member of Grove Hill Baptist Church, he was a retired owner of Jordan’s Cleaners.

Survivors include his wife, Willodene Dunn Jordan of Grove Hill; son, Ray Jordan of Grove Hill; four daughters, Kay Horton of Jackson, Debbie James of Baton Rouge, La., Karen Brooks and Ashley Fuller, both of Grove Hill; two brothers, Bryant Jordan of Grove Hill and Milton Jordan of Panama City, Fla.; sister, Bernice Causey of Grove Hill; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Dec. 24 at Grove Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Boone and the Rev. Chris Kynard officiating. Interment was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill with Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directing.

Louise Calhoun

Louise Calhoun, 69, a resident of Zimco, died Dec. 19, 2006 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital. A member of Walter Mission A.M.E. Zion Church of Zimco, she served the church in many capacities.

She is survived by her mother, Nonie Mae Griffin of Zimco; two sisters, Vergal (Clyde) Pugh of Zimco and Mary Tynes of Detroit, Mich.

The funeral service was Dec. 23 at the Walter Mission A.M.E. Zion Church of Zimco with the Rev. Raymond Sander and Pastor Theodore Law, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
