Flossie L. Roe

Flossie L. Roe, 93, died Sept. 8, 2006 at an area hospital. Anative and resident of Clarke County, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara R. Wiggins and Martha R. Finney, both of Grove Hill; four sons, Vernon Roe of Jackson, Kenneth Roe of Brewton, Jerry Roe of Mobile and Charles Roe of Grove Hill; four sisters, Lois Batley, Nettie Alday and Francis Davis, all of Jackson and Jeanette Lewis of Mobile; two brothers, W.C. Smith of Coffeeville and S.D. Smith of Theodore; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Roe, daughter, Jean R. Howard, two sisters, Ada Williamson and Virginia Smith, two brothers, Clyde Smith and Clinton Smith and two grandchildren, Sam Roe and Jennifer Roe.

The funeral service was Sept. 10 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Walker Springs. Interment was in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Bros.William Allison and Carey Howard officiating and St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Mickey Lou Tryon

Mickey Lou Tryon, 63, a native of Hobson and a resident of Lake Worth, Fla., died Sept. 8, 2006 at J.F.K. Medical Center in Lake Worth. She was a hostess in the restaurant business.

Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col. Charles M. Tryon Jr. of Lake Worth; two sons, Robert Craig Tryon of Port Lucie, Fla. and Carl Steven Tryon of London, England; two brothers, Robert "Bobby" Thompson of Chatom and Charles Thompson of Norwood, N.C.; twin sister, Carol Sue Goldman of St. Stephens; mother, Bessie B. Thompson of Hobson; granddaughter, Clarice Blackwell and great-granddaughter, Georgia Blackwell, both of Gainesville.

The funeral service was Sept. 12 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom. Interment was in the Pine Level Cemetery in Hobson.

Fannie Mae Howard Whatley

Fannie Mae Howard Whatley, a member of Howardtown Baptist Church in Tibbie, died Sept. 10, 2006 at her residence at the age of 80. She was a native and resident of Tibbie and a retired seamstress.

She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Whatley of Monroeville and Joe Whatley of Tibbie; three daughters, Betty Anderson and Mary Akridge, both of Tibbie and June Spaulding of Mt. Shasta, Calif.; three brothers, Eugene Howard of Tibbie, Leamon Howard of Wilmer and Billy Howard of Citronelle; four sisters, Jeannie Howard and Shirley Bazor, both of Tibbie, Betty Presnall of Jackson and Evelyn Tucker of Saraland; 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 14 (today) at 6 p.m. at the Howardtown Baptist Church in Tibbie.

The funeral service will be Friday, Sept. 15 at the church with burial in the church cemetery and Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

Gaines Rice

Gaines Rice, 77, a Clarke County native and a resident of St. Stephens, died Sept. 14, 2006 at a local hospital. An avid golfer and fisherman, he enjoyed pitching in the "Farmer's League" in the his early years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Louise Rice of St. Stephens; three daughters, Beverly Widner of Coffeeville, Diane Jones of Mobile and Shirley Minor Phillips of Daphne; son, Kenneth Ray Minor of Mobile; sister, Wilda Johnson of Jackson; five grandchildren and a special friend, Charlie Norris.

The funeral service was Sept. 15 at the First Baptist Church in St. Stephens with the Rev. Gary Patrick officiating. Interment was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers were Charles Rice, Kenner Rice, Jack Johnson, Sam Johnson, Kelly Floyd Sullivan and John Weaver.

Selia Jackson

A graveside service for infant Selia Jackson was conducted on Sept. 19 at Rodger Temple A.O.H. Church Cemetery in Gainestown. She died Sept. 16, 2006 at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by her mother, Cecile Jackson of Alma and grandparents, Lucille and Walter Jackson, both of Alma. Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directed the service.

Arquilla Reed Lang

Arquilla Reed Lang, a resident of Wagarville, died Sept. 18, 2006 at her home. She was 86. A member of Mt. Shady A.M.E. Zion Church in Sunflower, she served as president of the Usher Board and mother of the church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mazie Hatch of Valley Springs, Calif., Mary Marshall of Templehills, Md. and Edna Lange of Wagarville; six sons, Charlie Lang Jr. of Morganhill, Calif., James Lang, Walter Lang and David Lang, all of Wagarville, Richard Lang of Gulfport, Miss. and Jackie Edward of Saraland; sister, Mary Ruth Williams of Sunflower; brother, Eugene Reed Sr. of Wagarville; 28 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour of 11 a.m. at Mt. Shady A.M.E. Zion Church in Sunflower. Burial will be in the Lang Cemetery in Sunflower with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Carrie Mae MacMillian Pernell

Carrie Mae MacMillian Pernell, 72, of Jackson, died Sept. 12, 2006 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. She was a member of the Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church in Jackson where she served as a deaconess and matron counselor.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Mack Pernell of Jackson; five sons, Byron Pernell of Tacoma, Wash., Keith Pernell, Freda Allen, Mack Allen Pernell and Merlyn Pernell, all of Jackson; daughter, Tangila Hurst of Monroeville; brother, Joseph Jones of Chicago, Ill.; 18 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.

The funeral service was Sept. 18 at Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church in Jackson. Interment was in St. Peter Cemetery in Allen with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Gertrude Wilson

Gertrude Wilson of Jackson, a homemaker, died Sept. 15, 2006 at her residence at the age of 83.

Survivors include a daughter, Ella McKenzie of Jackson; five sons, Tommie Lee Wilson of Jackson, Elbert Wilson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Wilson of Long Beach, Calif., Jimmie Lee Wilson of Talladega and Johnny Lee Wilson of Foley; sister, Lizzie Anderson of Mobile; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Sept. 23, 2 p.m. in the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson.

Lloyd Carpenter

Lloyd Carpenter, 70, died Sept. 23, 2006 in a Mobile hospital. He was a native and resident of Chatom. A retired electrician for Ciba Specialty Chemicals, he was a member of Springhill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carol M. Carpenter of Chatom; daughter, Cathi C. (Steve) Burton of Chatom; brother, Carlton Carpenter of Jackson; sister, Dot Laton of Laton Hill and two grandchildren.

The graveside service was Sept. 25 at Springbank Cemetery on Highway 56 West in Chatom with the Rev. Kenneth Henson officiating and Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

Pallbearers were Brent Laton, Stephen Carpenter, Stacey Carpenter, Norvell Jones, Charles Hicks, Sam Loper, Larry Hicks and Gerald Taylor.

Judy Williamson Etheredge

Judy Williamson Etheredge, 58, born March 31, 1948 in Grove Hill, died Sept. 21, 2006 at a local hospital. She was a resident of Jackson. A graduate of Clarke County High School and the University of Southern Mississippi, she was the technology coordinator for the Clarke County Board of Education and a first grade teacher at Gillmore Elementary School in Jackson for 28 years. She was a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church in Jackson, the National Education Association (NEA), Alabama Education Association (AEA) and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include her husband, Randall B. "Randy" Etheredge of Jackson; son, Robert Benjamin "Ben" (Kasie) Etheredge of Coffeeville; daughter, Emily Etheredge (Phillip) Smith of Yulee, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Jo Williamson of Opelika, Shirley Cotten of Brewton and Cheryl Patrick of Pearl, Miss. and grandson, Elijah Phillip "Eli" Smith of Yulee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carter B. and Cula Lee Williamson, two brothers, Percy Williamson and Larry Williamson and sister, Kay Williamson.

Visitation was Sept. 23 at Stave Creek Baptist Church. The funeral service was Sept. 24 at Stave Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Hank Ott, Thomas Ott, Russ Dowling, Clint O'Guynn, Graham Braswell, Clint Harrell, Quincy Baros and Ricky Manchester.

Honorary pallbearers were the Clarke County Board of Education staff and teachers.
