Mary Bird Granade

Mary Bird Chapman Granade, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., died Dec. 6, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Will S. Chapman and husband John James Granade.

She is survived by a brother, Bill (Nancy) Chapman of Atmore; children Karen (Larry) Hardesty, Donna (Tom) McAdams, Sally (Mike) Fagan and Lisa (Mark) Swaffar; grandchildren, Larry and Josie Hardesty, Will and Dixie Hardesty, Rob and Jill Hardesty, Lindsay and Madison Williams, John and Kristen McAdams, Jeff and Janessa McAdams, Kelly Fagan, Casie and David Cox, Michael Fagan, Mary Caitlan and Daniel Swaffar; great-grandchildren, Devin, Maddie, Zach, Josh, Mason and Ellie Hardesty, Jack McAdams and Koen Fagan.

Services were Dec. 8, 12 p.m. at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland with the Revs. Andy Ferguson and Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment was Sunday, Dec. 9 in the Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery with Scott Little officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Broad Street United Methodist Church Missions Fund at 155 Central Ave., Cleveland, TN 37311 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Ronald Luzell Bumpers

Ronald Luzell Bumpers, 56, a native of Winn and resident of Leroy, died Dec. 8, 2007 at the Jackson Medical Center in Jackson. He was employed as a chemical operator for Ciba in McIntosh and was a member of Berry's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Winn.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Robinson Bumpers of Leroy; one son, Reginald Robinson of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Angel (Brandon) Goulding of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandchildren; his mother, Sweetie Mae Bumpers Law of Jackson; a sister, Helen (Collin) Calhoun of Grove Hill; and two brothers, Arnold (Annie) Bumpers and Donald (Anette) Bumpers, both of Winn.

Funeral services are today, Dec. 13, at the Berry's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Winn. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery of Jackson with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Gregory Jerrod Chapman

Gregory Jerrod Chapman died in a car accident on Dec. 8, 2007 at the age of 40. He was a native of Toddtown and a resident of Mascotte, Fla. Chapman was a member of the graduating class of 1985 at Clarke County High School in Grove Hill and Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church in Toddtown.

His survivors include his mother, Lovie C. Barney of Toddtown; one sister, Marilyn (Richard) Burrell of Toddtown; three brothers, Michael (Mary) Chapman of Jackson, Carl (Barbara) Chapman of Mobile and Thomas Chapman of Leesburg, Fla.; a companion, Kiwanis Law of Mascotte; two adopted daughters, Preshetta (Terrel) Davis of Leesburg and Kawanita (Michael) Thornton of Mascotte; three adopted sons, Daniel Law, Travis Chappell and James (Brittaney) Chappell, all of Mascotte; and eight adopted grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Dec. 15 at 12 noon from the Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church in Toddtown. Interment will follow in the Pine Chapel Cemetery of Toddtown with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Flora Mae Hunter

Flora Mae Jones Hunter, 86, a native of Sweet Water and a resident of Jackson, died at the University Hospital in Tampa, Fla. on Dec. 4, 2007 at the age of 86. She was a graduate of Alabama State University and a retired educator. A member of the Star Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Sweet Water, she was under watch care at Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church of Jackson.

Survivors include one son, Pastor Gregory (Debora) Powe of Tampa,; one sister, Johnnie (Wilkerson) Sewell of Sweet Water; one brother, Clifford (Charlene) Jones of Jackson; and four grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 12 from the Star Bethel Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. John Wright, pastor and Pastor Gregory Powe, officiating minister. Interment followed in the Antioch Cemetery of Nicholsville with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Dan James Jr.

Dan James Jr., a native of Sunflower and resident of Jackson, died at the age of 76 on Dec. 9, 2007 at his home. He was a retired saw operator for C.E. Harrell Logging of Sunflower.

He is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline D. James and Van (James) Gaston, both of Jackson, Shirley (Lonnie) Campbell of Mobile and Sonya (Terry) Stewart of Texas; two sons, Clifton James and Albert (Ella) James, both of Jackson; two brothers, Jessie James of Sunflower and Samuel James of Indiana; one sister, Atlean Brown of Sunflower; one adopted sister, the Rev. Georgia Nash of Choctaw Bluff; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Saturday, Dec. 15, 1:30 p.m. until the 2:30 funeral hour at the Inspirational Tabernacle Church in Jackson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Sarah Elizabeth Arnold

Sarah Elizabeth Garrick Arnold, 92, a native of Carroll County, Ga. and resident of Whatley, died Dec. 18, 2007 at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in Grove Hill. Ms. Arnold and her first husband, Willard Garrick, owned and operated Garrick's Cash Store. After his death she married the Rev. C.E. Arnold and the store is now owned and operated by her son Robert Edward Garrick. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Grove Hill.

Survivors include her son, Robert Edward (Dot) Garrick of Whatley; two grandchildren, Lisa (Eddie) King of Selma and Donna (Phil) Robinson of Mobile; four great-grandchildren, Adam King and Anna Catherine King, both of Selma, Kallie Robinson and Kayilyn Robinson, both of Mobile.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 21, 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11, in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. Interment will be in the Whatley Cemetery.

Hazel Dean Brewer Harrell

Hazel Dean Brewer Harrell, died Dec 16, 2007 in a local hospital at the age of 85. She was a native and lifelong resident of the Antioch community near Grove Hill, a member of the Antioch Baptist Church and a retired seamstress for Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson.

Ms. Harrell is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Walker of the Antioch community; three grandchildren, Eric (Fleka) Walker of Grove Hill, Dina (Darryl) Cabaniss of Jackson and Paige (Jason) Ammons of Baton Rouge, La.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec 18 at Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Cleon Kyles and Lon Baxter officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Brewer, Jason Ammons, Matt Walker, Adam Walker, Storm Cabaniss and Scotty Harrell.

Coma L. "Pee Wee" Hoven

Coma L. "Pee Wee" Hoven, a native and resident of Jackson, died Dec. 6, 2007 at his residence at the age of 79. He was a retired owner of Hoven Auto Sales and a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church of Jackson, as well as the American Legion Post No. 85. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by a son, Marty (Donna) Hoven of Demopolis; a daughter, Susan Hoven of Jackson; a brother, Dorsey Fait Hoven of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lizzie H. Sheffield and Marie H. Young, both of Jackson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Dec. 8 at Stave Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Bill Taylor, David Rikard, Don Lolley, Jeremy Rikard, Richard Young and Norman "Buzz" Jordan.

Henley Bohen Jones Jr.

Henley Bohen Jones Jr., a native of Winn and resident of Meridian, Miss., died at the age of 86 on Dec. 11, 2007 at a Meridian hospital. He was a district manager for Smith's Bakery and a lifetime mason in the Bohen Lodge No. 240 in Eight Mile. He was also a member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia D. Jones of Meridian; a son, Bobby R. (Jill) Jones of Huntsville; three brothers, Troy (Estelle) Jones and Billy (Anne) Jones, both of Jackson and Ivan (Julia) Jones of Foley; two sisters, Dot G. (Bib) Nealey of Jackson and Imogene (Don) Coleman of Mobile; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 14 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson with the Revs. Sonny Hoven and Don Rushing officiating. Interment was in the Trinity Memorial Gardens of Jackson.

Active pallbearers were Rayford Guy, Joel Coleman, Darell Jones, John Jones, Barry Jones and Graham Braswell.

Cecil Tennis Loper

Cecil Tennis Loper, a native of Chatom and resident of St. Stephens, died at his residence Dec. 17, 2007 at the age of 82. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Lone Star Cement Corporation in St. Stephens and a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Stephens.

Survivors include a son, Rodney Loper of St. Stephens; four sisters, Verna Morris Brewer and Gracie Milne, both of Mobile, Ethel Dees of Escatawpa and Veaver James of Tibbie; two grandchildren, Jared Loper of St. Stephens and Tyler Loper of Auburn.

Funeral services were Dec. 19 at the First Baptist Church of St. Stephens with the Rev. Gary Patrick, the Rev. James Watkins and the Rev. Albritton officiating. Interment was in the Midway Methodist Cemetery in St. Stephens with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Ray Richardson, Don Richardson, Marvin Richardson, Oliver Goldman, Pete Goldman and John Braun.
