Tomzie Tucker Calhoun

Tomzie Tucker Calhoun, 91, a native of Marengo County and a resident of Hampstead, N.C., died Oct. 21, 2007 at Corinthians Place Assisted Living Facility in Leland, N.C. She was a former resident of Jackson where she retired as a domestic.

Survivors include four daughters, Rosia Smith of Homewood, Peggy Poellnitz of Raleigh, N.C., Laura Poellnitz-Ferguson (Thaddeus) of Hampstead and Mary Poellnitz of Birmingham; seven sons, Eardie Poellnitz of Birmingham, Tommy (Mamie) Poellnitz of Eight Mile, Roy (Josephine) Poellnitz of Grovetown, Ga., Johnny (Brenda) Poellnitz of Grove Hill, Matthew (Merian) Poellnitz of Huntingdon Station, N.Y., Billy Poellnitz of Wilmington, N.C. and Rich Hamilton of Mobile; 50 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home chapel. Viewing will be today, Oct. 25, 6-8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in Linden.

Edgar Louis Holton

Edgar Louis Holton, 71, a native of Woodbind, Ga. and a resident of Jackson, died Oct. 27, 2007 at an area health care facility. He was a retired self-employed mechanic and a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He is survived by four sons, William Holton of Jackson, Steve Holton and Stanley Holton, both of Auburndale, Fla. and Edward Holton of Brunswick, Ga.; four daughters, Polly Ann Rykland of Brunswick, Delois Alford, Patricia Alford and Debra Shephard, all of Jackson; sisters, Annie Lou St. John and Gency Stapleton, both of Woodbind; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 30 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson with interment in Peniel Cemetery in Jackson.

James Gilbert Kearley

James Gilbert Kearley, a native of Vredenburg, died at his home in Grove Hill, Oct. 28, 2007, at the age of 86. A retired self-employed merchant and owner of Bigbee Feed Mill he was also a dogwood sawyer. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Tompkins Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Kearley of Livingston and Larry Kearley of Grove Hill; three brothers, A.J. Kearley and Franklin D. Kearley, both of Butler and V.D. Kearley of Mobile; four sisters, Gladys Mae Armistead and Shirley Ann Crosby, both of Butler, Frances Booker of Semmes and Mary Alice Armistead of Selma; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 31 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill with interment in Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill. Pallbearers were Toby Kearley, Patrick Kearley, Jake Kearley, Robby Kearley, Bryan Kearley, Lonnie Stone and Jesse Stone.

Thurman Melvin Williams

Thurman Melvin Williams, a native of Fruitdale and resident of McIntosh, died at the age of 81 on Oct. 24, 2007 at his residence. He was an equipment operator for the state Highway Department and a WWII veteran.

He is survived by two stepsons, James Cooper of Mobile and Danny Cooper of Meridian, Miss.; two stepdaughters, Katie Cooper of Theodore and Linda Thomas of Meridian; nieces, Jean Williams and Carol Ann Turner, both of Fruitdale; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 26 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom with interment in the Grace Williams Cemetery in Fruitdale.

Grace Chestine Sullivan

Grace Chestine Sullivan, 74, died at her home in Mobile Oct. 19, 2007. She was a resident of McIntosh for many years before moving to Mobile. She was a dental hygienist and secretary for years; her main hobby was spending time with her only grandson.

Survivors include her son, Hubert Judson Sullivan of Mobile; sisters, Glenda Sossaman and Dotsy Connell, both of Mobile; and grandson, Harris Nicholas Judson Sullivan of Silverhill.

A memorial service was Oct. 27 at the St. Stephens Funeral Home in St. Stephens with the Rev. David Albriton officiating.

Sarah Virginia Couture

Sarah Virginia Couture, a native of Ripley, Miss. and a resident of Jackson, died Nov. 7, 2007 at her home at 81 years of age. She was the retired self-employed former owner of Shelby Motel and a member of the Trafalgar Village Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn.

She is survived by a sister, Sally Blair of Mobile; nephew, David Counselman of Pennsylvania; and her niece, Patricia (Roger) Counselman of Jackson.

Funeral services were Nov. 10 in the chapel of Memphis Funeral Home in Memphis and interment in the Memphis Memorial Park of Memphis. Information has been provided by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Eva Milstead Horton

Eva Milstead Horton died at her residence in Jackson, Nov. 11, 2007, at the age of 99. A native of Jackson, she was a homemaker and a member of Good Springs Baptist Church as well as a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Santa Fe Lodge No. 225 in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Horton Sr.; two sons, Richard A. "Billy" Horton Jr. and Hugh Horton; four daughters, Emma H. Andress, Novalene H. Woodham, Margaret H. Wiggins and Myra H. Miller.

She is survived by two sons, Jimmy (Dean) Horton and Terry (Kaye) Horton, both of Jackson; three daughters, Teresa (Larry) Howell of Cantonment, Fla., Carolyn (Jack) Greer and Linda (Cecil) Jackson, both of Jackson; four sisters, Otto Milstead of Huntsville, Aubrey Milstead of Greensboro, N.C., Emmarene Dolbear and Irma Bumpers, both of Jackson; 31 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 14 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson with interment in the Winn Community Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jimmy Horton, Terry Horton, Jack Greer, Cecil Jackson, Johnny Miller and Larry Howell. Honorary pallbearers were her grandsons and granddaughters.

Thera Mae Bumpers

Thera Mae Bumpers, a native and resident of Coffeeville, died at her residence on Nov. 13, 2007 at the age of 92. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church of Coffeeville and of the RSVP Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Bumpers and grandson, Jonathan White.

Survivors include two daughters, Lyla Koch of Jackson and Brenda White of Atmore; three sons, John H. Bumpers, Michael L. Bumpers and Jerry G. Bumpers, all of Coffeeville; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are today (Nov. 15), with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to the funeral hour at 11 at the First Baptist Church of Coffeeville with the Rev. Roscoe Wentworth officiating.

Interment will be in the Coffeeville Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Active pallbearers will be Austin Bumpers, Philip Bumpers, Rudy Glenn Koch, Bill White, Scott Johnson, Brian Middleton, Brandon Middleton and Blake Middleton.

Doris McCulley Nichols

Doris McCulley Nichols, 65, died Nov 12, 2007 at a Mobile hospital.

A native of Sunflower and a resident of Wagarville, she was a self-employed caregiver and a member of the First Baptist Church of Leroy. Her parents, Ruth and James McCulley; a sister, Erma Ruth Harris, brother, Aaron McCulley; and a son, James Chastain, preceded her in death.

Surviving her are two sons, Rex C. (Paula) Chastain of Long Beach, Miss. and Daniel L. (Kathy) Chastain of Saraland; five brothers, J.D. McCulley of Fairhope, Henry McCulley of Point Clear, Richard McCulley of Grand Bay and Horace McCulley and Roy McCulley, both of Wagarville; three sisters, Jeanette Vanscoder of Pittsford, Mich., Val Lankford of Pearl River, La. and Sherrie Henson of Nederland, Texas; and four grandchildren, Laura M. Chastain and Caryn C. Chastain, both of Long Beach and Christopher Chastain and Ashley Chastain, both of Saraland.

Funeral services were Nov. 16 at the First Baptist Church of Leroy with interment in the Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery in Wagarville. Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson directed arrangements.

Freddie Earl Hicks

Freddie Earl Hicks, a native and resident of Coffeeville, died at his residence at the age of 90 on Nov. 17, 2007. He was a road grader for the Clarke County Commission and a WWII veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Mearl Hicks of Coffeeville; three sisters, Vergie Ravier of Mobile, Minnah Morgan of Coffeeville and Louise Frazier of Starkville, Miss.

Funeral services were Nov. 19 at the Ulcanush Baptist Church in Coffeeville. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Pallbearers were Arless Hicks,

Gabe Hicks, Grant Ellisor, Joel Hicks, Andy Hicks and David Headley. Honorary pallbearers were James Dunagan, Frankie Beverly, Bob Burnham, Basil Norris, George Woodham, Ray Purvis and Keith Graham.
