Lola Pugh Brown

Lola Pugh Brown, a native of Coffeeville and longtime resident of Clarke County, died Oct. 3, 2007 in a Montgomery hospital at the age of 89. Preceding her in death were her parents, Mary and Elias Pugh; sisters, Bertha and Edythe; and eight brothers, Earl, Conrad, Love, Clayton, Ira, Ted, Tollie and Morley. She had been a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church in Coffeeville from the age of 15.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Letha Pugh; and beloved nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted Oct. 5 at New Prospect Baptist Church. The Rev. Glen Dunnam officiated with music provided by Mr. and Mrs. Billy Harrison. Interment was in the church cemetery directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Active pallbearers were Chris Pugh, Tommy Pugh, Howard Nichols, Scott Owens, Lex Owens and Lee Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were her nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to the New Prospect Baptist Church.

Lora Leon Elmore

Lora Leon Elmore, a native of Choctaw County and resident of Chatom, died at Springhill Memorial Hospital Oct. 2, 2007 at 80 years of age. She was a homemaker and a member of the Frankville Baptist Church in Frankville.

She is survived by her sons, Johnny (Karen) Richardson of Mobile, and Wayne (Donna) Richardson and Joseph Elmore, both of Chatom; three daughters, Dianne (Billy) Goldman of St. Stephens, Nancy (Randy) Nobles of Satsuma and Bessie (Dwain) Lassiter of Cullomburg; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Sonny Hoven and Billy Harris officiated the Oct. 4 service at Frankville Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were by Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom.

Judy Griffin Foster

Judy Griffin Foster, 62, died Oct. 3, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center. A native and resident of Walker Springs, she was a bookkeeper for Woodson Furniture Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jackson.

She is survived by her husband, James "Baby Ray" Foster of Jackson; brothers, Billy (Paula) Griffin and James (Linda) Griffin, both of Jackson; sisters, Shirley G. Chastain of Jackson, Gerry Faye Griffin of Walker Springs and Jewell Paul of Grove Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was Oct. 4 at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Virginia Hayes Hall

Virginia Hayes Hall was a retired housemother for the Wilmer Health Care Facility in Citronelle. A native of Choctaw County and resident of Citronelle, she died at the age of 80, Oct. 7, 2007, at Springhill Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Hayes of Lucedale, Miss., Leon Hayes of Citronelle and Roger Hayes of Fruitdale; two daughters, Diane Newburn of Citronelle and Patricia Bump of Ozark; sister, Pauline Holifield of Waynesboro, Miss.; half-sister and half-brother, Faye Buchannan of Gilbertown and Roy Knapp of Silas, respectively; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Frank Thornton officiated the service Oct. 10 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom. Interment was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Bigbee.

Myrtle Marie Jensen Henley

Myrtle Marie Jensen Henley, 89, died Oct. 7, 2007 at her daughter's residence in Greer, S.C. She was a native of Penn Station, Miss. and a longtime resident of Jackson, member of First Baptist Church of Jackson and lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is predeceased by her husband, Frank T. Henley; parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Jensen; and a brother, Nels Jensen, who was killed in World War II.

Survivors include daughters, Frances (Michael) Erickson of Greer and Bonnie Bonnell of Melbourne, Fla.; brother, Eugene (Linda) Jensen of Baton Rouge, La.; sisters, Dorothy (Ralph) Spurgeon of Brooksville, Miss. and Audrey Powell of Jackson; three grandchildren, Brad (Tammy) Bonnell, Kristen (Dan) Miller and Ryan Erickson; seven great-grandchildren, Aaron Bonnell, Caleb Bonnell, Jacob Bonnell, Meghan Shortt, Jacob Shortt, T.J. Shortt and Austin Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are today (Oct. 11) at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Henley Cemetery at Fulton. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jackson, a local hospice or a charity of your choice.

David Ray Jones

David Ray Jones, 61, died Oct. 2, 2007 in Greenwell Springs, La. He was employed in sales.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Carolyn Gilchrist Jones of Greenwell Springs; a son, Wesley (Shelley) Jones of Greenwell Springs; and two sisters.

Graveside services were Oct. 6 in Magnolia Cemetery on Piney Woods Road in Grove Hill. Arrangements were by Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson.

Eugene Rowland

Eugene Rowland, a self-employed carpenter, died at 62 years of age, Oct. 1, 2007, at his Jackson residence.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Holifield Rowland of Jackson; sons, Thomas Rowland of Clara, Miss., Edward (Brianne) Rowland and Brandon Rowland, both of Jackson, Michael Rowland and Tracey Rowland, both of Jackson, Miss.; daughters, Crystal Rowland and Brittany Rowland, both of Jackson; step-daughters, Tracy Scott of Ellisville, Miss. and Terri Lynn Rowland of Jackson, Miss.; brothers, Benny Rowland of Bartlett, Tenn., Chester Rowland of Strayhorn, Miss. and Johnny Rowland of Coldwater, Miss.; eight sisters, Earnestine Dover of Batesville, Miss., Lillian Dover and Ruth Tarver, both of Senatobia, Miss., Virginia Turner of Chattanooga, Tenn., Darthia Hallum of Abbeville, Miss., Margie Rowe of Greenwood, Miss., Lorene McCarver of Arkabutler, Miss. and Irene Butler of Crockett, Miss.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 4 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jackson

Dorothy Jean Baker

Dorothy Jean Baker, 71, died at her home in Chickasaw on Oct. 8, 2007. She was a homemaker and a native of Alabama. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Glen Baker and her parents, Fannie Mae and Massey Moseley.

Survivors include her sons, Nathan Glen Baker of Chickasaw and Timothy Etheridge (Leslie) Baker of Mobile; six sisters, Robbie Granade and Ruth Napper, both of Bigbee, Ruby (Harvey) Deas of Mobile, Julie Richardson of Saraland, Flora (Clifton) Johnson and Mildred (James) Sheffield, both of St. Stephens; five brothers, Massey L. (Mary Jo) Moseley Jr. and Joseph N. Moseley, both of Mobile, Hiram M. (Laura) Moseley of St. Stephens and John F. (Linda) Moseley of Salitpa; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is today (Oct. 11), 11 a.m. at the St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens with the service to follow at 12 noon. Interment will be at Faith Walker Cemetery in St. Stephens with the Revs. Jimmie Butts and David Albritton officiating.

Pallbearers are Cliff Williams Jr., Sammy Granade, Madison Moseley, Emory Johnson, Johnny Moseley and Buddy Price.

Horace Tillman Bozeman

Horace Tillman Bozeman died Oct. 3, 2007 at 69 years of age. He was a native and resident of St. Stephens and had served in the United States Navy. His survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was conducted Oct. 8 at St. Stephens Baptist Church Cemetery in St. Stephens. The eulogy was given by Marlin Alday with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Bozeman was preceded in death by his father, Henry Cornelius Bozeman; mother, Jessie Everett Bozeman; brothers, William Garland Bozeman, Raymond Bozeman and Norman Bozeman; sisters, Louis Bozeman Sullivan, Flossie Bozeman Alday, Louise Bozeman Sullivan and Alice Bozeman.

Nell Porter Henley

Nell Porter Henley, died Oct. 13, 2007 at a local nursing facility at the age of 84. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Walter G. "Botch" Henley Sr.; three sons, Walter G. "Jack" Henley Jr . of Jackson, John P. Henley of Midland, Mich. and Frank M. "Mac" Henley of Salitpa; and two grandsons, Matthew P. Henley of Ypsilanti, Mich. and John Andrew Henley of Toledo, Ohio.

The daughter of Albert S.J. Porter and Elizabeth McNair Porter, she was born in Greenville, Miss. and raised in Glenn Allan, Miss. Henley graduated as valedictorian at Glenn Allan High School and attended Mississippi State College for women. During World War II, she was a civilian employee of the Army, serving as department head in accounting in Daytona Beach and at the 4th Service Command in Atlanta, Ga.

She was a retired school teacher with the Clarke County School System and had set up the commercial department at Jackson High School, teaching there for seven years and was considered a "favorite" teacher to many. Later she also established the commercial department at Jackson Academy and taught there until retirement. Mrs. Henley was a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson and a longtime member of the church's Women's Missionary Union (WMU). She was a 50-year member of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Home Demonstration Club.

Funeral services were Oct. 15 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with interment in the Trinity Memorial Gardens of Jackson.
