Mary Frances McDonald Watson

Mary Frances McDonald Watson of Vestavia Hills, age 78, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2002. She was born in Belmay, Alabama and has lived in Birmingham since 1978. She was a graduate of Auburn University in Medical Technology. As a member South Highland Presbyterian Church, she was active in its Flower Committee and a member of the Leadership Sunday School Class. She was a member of Pineview Garden Club, Coronets Dance Club and Vestavia Hills County Club. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harvey Irvine Watson, four sons, Harvey Irvine Watson, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, William Harrison Watson (Katie) of Rochester, NY, David McDonald Watson (Linda) of Powder Springs, GA, and Robert Scott Watson (Gina) of Pittsburgh, PA, five grandchildren, as well as her sister Dorothy Traweek of Houston, Texas and nine nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at Garden Hills Cemetery Wednesday, March 27th at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held at South Highland Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. with visitation after the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Flower Committee of South Highland Presbyterian Church, 2035 Highland Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35205 or a favorite charity.

Services are under the direction of Ridouts Valley Chapel in Homewood.

Jeanne H. Norwood

Memorial service for Jeanne H. Norwood will be held Thursday, March 28, 2002 at 11:30 at Barham Chapel, with Dr. Raymon Leake officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Mitchell military Cemetery at Ft. Benning, GA with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Norwood, 77, of Meridian, Mississippi, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at her residence. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend who will be missed dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard L. Norwood, Jr., her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Hancock and Brother Maurice (Buddy) Hancock.

Survivors include: Son: Leonard L. Norwood and wife, Diane K., of Sanford, NC; Daughters: Fan N. Pigford and husband, Richard A., of Vicksburg and Jeanne n. Fort, and husband William Douglas (Doug) of Meridian; Grandsons: Richard N. Pigford, and William Douglas Fort, Jr., both of Meridian; Granddaughters: Laurie P. Brock and husband, Jeremy of Jacksonville, FL and Jessica (Jessi) G. Fort of Meridian; Sister: Bobbie H. Bailey of Manchester, TN; Sister-in-law: Gee Gee Hancock of York, AL and their families along with many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

The family requests memorials be made to your favorite charity.

Samuel R. Stokes

Funeral Services for Samuel R. Stokes were held Friday, May 31, 2002 at the Church of God Holiness Church with Revs. Don Wedgeworth and Coy Miller officiated the ceremony. Interment was at Clay Memorial Cemetery in Cuba, AL with Rev. James Kimbrough and Rev. Dewayne Watson officiating the services.

Mr. Stokes, 69, born in Kemper County, MS and native of Cuba, AL, died Wednesday, May 29th at his residence. He was a retired Forrest Ranger for the State of Alabama for 17 years; served three years in the United States Army and thirteen years in the Army National Guard.

Survivors include wife of 42 years: Geraldine Hearne Stokes; two daughters, Angela McGilberry and husband Ernie of Demopolis, AL and Melissa Pike and husband Randy of Cuba, AL; three sisters: June Culpepper and husband, John of Cuba, AL; Jane Sciple of DeKalb, MS; Kathy Luke and husband Wayne of Preston, MS; one brother-in-law, Ravon Cumberland of Preston MS, and one sister-in-law, Eddie Mae Stokes of DeKalb, MS. four grandsons: David (Dee) Gregory, Daniel Gregory, Robby Coats, and Alex Coats. Three step-grandsons, Adam Pike, Daniel McGilberry and Matthew McGilberry; one step-granddaughter, Jesse Pike and one great step-grandson, Nathan Pike. Also ten nieces and seven nephews.

Preceding him in death was his father and mother, Pinkney and Mrytle Stokes; two brothers, Champ and Jeff Stokes; three sisters: Marie Robert, Martha Creed and Virginia Cumberland.

Pallbearers were Jamie Ashe, Jack Hewitt, Cecil Radcliffe, Charles Richardson, W. L. Seale and Ed Stallings.

Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mamie Gray Young

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mamie Gray Young were held on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Cuba Baptist Church with Rev. Reid Vaughan and Rev. Ernie Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Clay Memorial Cemetery in Cuba.

Mrs. Young, born March 21, 1945 in Elmore County, AL, died on Thursday, May 23 at her residence. She was the owner of Denco’s #2 of Cuba.

She is survived by one daughter: Lynne Young of York; one son: Lee Young and wife, Connie, of Cuba; one granddaughter: Brittney Young of Cuba; one sister: Judy Boone and husband, Bill, of Montgomery, AL; three brothers: Darmon Gray and wife, Jean, of Grand Bay, AL, Elmer Gray and wife, Joann, of Lincoln, AL and Waymon Gray of Lilburn, GA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby R. Young.

Pallbearers were Jeff Boone, Robert Gray, C. W. Fisher, Bobby Hatcher, Steve Goodman and James McElroy. Honorary Pallbearers were Charlie Goodman and Roger Upchurch. Bumpers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Elmore Baker, Jr.

Graveside services for Mr. John Elmore Baker, Jr. were held on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. from Myrtlewood Cemetery with Rev. Tim Meadows officiating.

Mr. Baker, 90, of Livingston United Methodist Church, retired as the City Water Works Director for the City of Livingston, and a member of the “Coffee Club”.

Survivors include his son: John E. Baker, III of Winter Springs, FL., two daughters: Edith B. Brown and husband, Gordon, of Meridian, MS, and Sally E. Baker of Tuscaloosa, AL; two brothers: James S. Baker of Macon, MS and Fred Baker of Panola, AL; two sisters: Katherine B. Dunn of Linden, AL and Frances Bassett of Goodwater, AL; three grandchildren: Brandy Pinion and husband, Scott, Christy Brown, and Sidney L. Brown; and two grandchildren: Brandon Pinion and Brianna Pinion.

Pallbearers were John Porter Baker, Jackie Baker, Joseph Baker, James Davis Baker, Garland Partridge, and Nick Hauser. Honorary Pallbearers were Jimmy Bedwell, Hilton Ishee, Tommy Butters, Tommy Fuller, Billy Trawick, Fred Walburn, and Allen Tartt Jr.

Bumpers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Willis Earl (Buster) Gandy

Funeral Services for Willis Earl (Buster) Gandy was held at the Belmont Church in Belmont, Alabama on Monday, June 3, 2002 with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Interment was held at the Belmont Cemetery.

Mr. Gandy, 92, of Coatopa, AL died June 1, 2002 at his residence. He was born and was a lifelong resident of Belmont, AL. He worked for Sumter County Board of Education for over 30 years, and was also a farmer and cattle farmer. He was the custodian of Belmont Cemetery for 27 years.

Survivors include: wife, Lula Ellen Gandy; two daughters: Bertha Ellen (Charles) Snider of Hueytown, AL and Martha Lois (Ronald) Hill of Coatopa, AL; Mary Frances Mason - Satsuma, AL and Carrie Elizabeth (Betty) Farr of Cedar Bluff, AL; one sister: Mattie Ray of Midfield, AL; two brothers: Oliver Wade (Mable) Gandy of Coatopa, AL and Earl Wilson (Rayvene) Gandy of Coatopa, AL; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Oliver Wade Gandy Jr, Michael Earl Gandy, Richard Warren Gandy, Kevin Gandy, Alan Gandy and John Wideman.

Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sterling Braxton Bragg

Funeral Services for Sterling Braxton Bragg was held on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bumpers Funeral Home Chapel in York, Alabama with Rev. Richard Scott officiating and interment in Shorts Cemetery located on Sumter County Road 15.

Mr. Bragg, 56, of Strafford, MO., died Sunday, March 23, 2003 at his residence. He was employed by Frisco Rail Road as a Section Foreman.

Survivors are wife: Dorothy Ann Bragg of Strafford, MO; two sons: Scotty Lee and wife Kimberly Bragg of Mammoth Springs, AR and Nathan Shane Bragg and Strafford, MO; one daughter: Amanda Dawn Bragg of Strafford, MO; one brother: Parker Clay Bragg, Jr., of Cuba, AL; one sisters: Billie June Gourgues of Mobile, AL; three grandchildren: Jamie Allen Bragg, Rivers Lauren Avera Bragg and Cordale Walker Bragg.

Pallbearers were Mike Huckabee of Thomasville, AL; Dennis Bragg of Cuba, AL; Lonnie F. Shannon, Sr., of Cuba, AL; Lonnie F. Shannon, Jr., of Cuba, AL; Darren Coffman of Meridian, MS; and John Gourgues of Butler, AL.

Bumpers Funeral Home of York, AL was in charge of funeral arrangements.

James Daniel “Dan” Spidle

Mr. James Spidle, age 84, of Coatopa, AL, died July 23, 2003 at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital. The funeral services were held at the Old Belmont Church on July 26, 2003 with Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Spidle was preceded in death by his wife, Lexa Spidle, a sister, Frances Hale, and a brother, John Spidle. Spidle is survived by four daughters, Rosa Lela (Eddie) Parales of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mickey (Kenny) Marchand of Belmont, AL, Debbie (Charles) James of Pennington, AL and Tina (Mike) Yelverton of Belmont, AL; one son, Tommy Joel Coats of Belmont, AL; one sister, Elizabeth S. McCormick of Belmont, AL; one brother, Ted Spidle of Belmont, AL; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The pallbearers were Daryl Calvert, Waylon Sheffield, Hubbert “Boo” White, Henry “Boo-Boo” Marchand, Bill Slay, Skip Drinkard, Mark Spidle and Jack McPherson. Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Sandra Sharp Perkins

Funeral services for Mrs. Sandra Sharp Perkins were held on July 24, 2003 at Cuba Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Poole officiating. Burial followed in Clay Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Perkins, 50, died July 21, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Houston, TX to Wayne Clare and Frances Marguerite Wilson Sharp. She was a secretary for Upchurch & Upchurch before being employed with Vital Care in Meridian, MS. She is survived by her husband, Mike Perkins of Cuba, AL; one daughter, Carrie Perkins of Cuba, AL; two sons, Abram Perkins of Columbus AFC, MS and Edwin Perkins of Cuba, AL; two brothers, Gary W. (Celia) Sharp of Margaret, AL and Ronnie P. (Shalotta) Sharp of York, AL; nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Pallbearers were Heath Sharp, Shawn Sharp, Jesse Wood, Michael Dennis, Hiram Patrenos and Charles Munoz. Bumpers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
