Clarence Raphael Roberts

Clarence Raphael "Ray" Roberts, died at a local assisted living facility at the age of 76 on May 14, 2007. He was a native and resident of Coffeeville. A member and retired pastor of Jones Chapel Church of Christ in Coffeeville, Roberts had been a general foreman in pipe-fitting for U.S. Mill Carrier.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Roberts of Coffeeville; five sons, Ben Jones of Millers Ferry, Kenneth Jones and Clark Roberts, both of Jackson, and Larry Jones and Laurie Roberts, both of Coffeeville; daughter, Wanda Lovette of Coffeeville; two brothers, Marion "Smokey" Roberts of Chilton and Ernest K. Roberts of Coffeeville; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services were May 16 at Jones Chapel Church of Christ with interment in the church Cemetery, directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Pallbearers were Dean Jones, Jeff Jones, Russell Roberts, Charles Reid, Zachary Roberts and Travis Glaze. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Shields, Gary and Tony Counselman and his sons.

Patricia Lozano

Patricia "Debbie" Lozano, 51, a native of Chatom and resident of Camden, died May 10, 2007 in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and member of Hobson Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by husband, Edward Lozano of Camden; four sons, Jason Keith Jones, Jeremy Ken Beech, Nicholas Ryan Jones and Timothy Wayne Jones all of Fruitdale; mother, Bulah B. Beech of Chatom; brother, Doug Beech of Chatom; two sisters, Renda Cotton and Ginger Singleton, both of Chatom; special friend Charlotte West of Citronelle; three stepsons, one stepdaughter and 11 grandchildren.

Services were conducted May 12 at Hobson Assembly of God Church with interment in the Jones-Beech Cemetery in Hobson and Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

Pallbearers included Chad Beech, Bart Beech, Heath Cotton, Wayne Jones, Mack West and Terry Williams.

Syble R. McIntyre Pugh Sanford

Syble R. McIntyre Pugh Sanford, 87, a native of Coffeeville and a long-time resident of Chickasaw, died May 14, 2007 in Mobile after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emily Lowery McIntyre and Joseph McIntyre, a daughter, Jeanette Pugh Kontos, son, Bobby Joe Pugh and grandson Jerry McLean.

Surviving Ms. McIntyre are two daughters, Betty Pugh (Jeral) McLean of Mobile and Emily Pugh (Mario) Arellano of Satsuma; two sons, Robert E. (Clara) Pugh of North Carolina and Chester M. (Marsha) Pugh of Demopolis; sister, Katherine Sanders of Mobile; long-time and devoted friends, Peggy and Jack Morris; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be May 17 (Today), 3 p.m., at Lathan Funeral Home chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Sanford's grandson, the Rev. Robbie Pugh will officiate. Interment will be in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson.

Active pallbearers are Robin McLean, Richard Hurst, Michael McLean, Jody McLean, Alan Pugh and Kendall Jimerson. Honorary pallbearers are Jeral McLean, Dr. Dimitrios D. Kontos, Mario Arellano, Ronnie Pugh, Randy Pugh, Coly McLean, Casey McLean, Michael McLean Jr., Dalton Haddix, Jerry McLean and Will McLean

Esther Maxwell

Esther Maxwell, 77, a resident of Jackson, died April 20, 2007 at her home. A retired machine operator for Vanity Fair Mills in Jackson, she was a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo H. Maxwell.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra (Jimmy) Chancey and Mary Lee (Reese) Hilt, both of Jackson and Wanda (Raymond) Pugh of Meridian, Miss.; two brothers, Chester Hoven of Jackson and Earl Hoven of Meridian; special friend, Ralph Strong of Jackson; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was April 22 at Stave Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Clint Pugh, Darrell Parnell, Derek James, Chris Moseley, Ronnie Hoven and Richard Marx Maxwell.

Honorary pallbearers were the senior ladies Sunday School class at Stave Creek Baptist Church.

Wanda Nell Smith

Wanda Nell Smith, 55, a native of Frankville and a resident of Elberta, died April 21, 2007 in a Mobile hospital. She was disabled but worked prior as a school bus driver.

She is survived by a son, John F. Smith of Jackson; three daughters, Dewanna Jo Reed of Grove Hill, Dorothy Jean Smith Moran of Foley and Lucky Smith of Elberta; four brothers, Needham Henson of Frankville, Michael Carl Henson of Kingsman, Ariz., Edward Henson and Richard Henson, both of Coden; nine sisters, Juanita Elmore and Marilyn Dempsey, both of Frankville, Olivia Lloyd and Edna Smith, both of Jackson, Pearl Carney of Waynesboro, Miss., Bama Meeks of Highland Home, Rachel Gates of Thomasville, Gloria Henson of Chatom and Tina Swank of Irvington and seven grandchildren.

The funeral service was April 22 at the Antioch Baptist Church in Grove Hill with the Rev. Benny Harrison officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Lillie Mae Roberts

Lillie Mae Roberts, a homemaker, died April 20, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center at the age of 82. She was a native of Thomasville.

The funeral service was April 22 in the O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville with Jimmy R. O'Bryant Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomasville.

She is survived by a son, Roger Roberts of Leroy; two daughters, Lynda Wingard and Tammy Hartley, both of Jackson; two brothers, Jenkins Ott of Jackson and Walter Curtis Ott of Grand Bay; sister, Bessie Lee Goodman of Richton, Miss.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jeff Etheredge, Rich Etheredge, Chris Roberts, Chip Roberts, Larry Parnell and Roger Duke.

Stephen Ray Carpenter

Stephen Ray Carpenter, 45, died May 22, 2007 at his residence in Leroy. A native of Jackson, Mr. Carpenter was an E & I mechanic for Weyerhaeuser operations, a member of First Baptist Church of Leroy and considered to be a loyal friend and family man.

He is survived by his parents, Carolyn and Carlton Carpenter of Jackson; his wife Tracey R. Carpenter of Leroy; two sons, Stephen Clay Carpenter and William Taylor Rawls Carpenter, both of Leroy; daughter, Raechel Jane Carpenter of Leroy; brother, Stacy Carl Carpenter of Jackson; sister, Stephanie Ann Allen of Rockville; and grandparents, Martha Powell and Margie Etheredge, both of Leroy.

Funeral services were May 24 at the First Baptist Church of Leroy with the Rev. James Watkins officiating. Interment was in the New Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

William Lamar Megginson

William Lamar Megginson, 91, of Mobile, a Clarke County native and former Jackson resident, died May 9, 2007 at a local Mobile hospital. Founder and operator for 45 years of Megginson Insurance and Realty Co., he was also active in the First Baptist Church as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent, a member of the Civitan Club, the Masonic Masons and the Clarke County Sheriff's Posse Association. Mr. Megginson was a well-known horseman raising Tennessee Walking Horses, a hunter and an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents Arco Harrison Megginson and John Willie Megginson, and grandson Todd Megginson.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bessie Mae Jackson Megginson; two daughters, Patricia (Warren) Hedrick and Charolette Megginson; two sons, Lamar Megginson Jr. and Lanier Megginson; three grandchildren, Michelle H. (Randy) Krieger, Matt (Heather) Megginson and Scott (Lisa) Hedrick; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Ron Lukat at Mobile Memorial Gardens on May 12. Graveside services were conducted at Choctaw Corners Cemetery in Thomasville by Lathan Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were nephews Charlie Jackson Jr., Kenneth Garrick, Tim Jackson, Ward Edge, Dan Pope and Henry Sewell.

Ellen Marie Johnson Jackson

Ellen Marie Johnson Jackson, 36, a native of Excel and resident of Gainestown died May 26, 2007 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital. She was a graduate of the Class of 1989 at Excel High School and employed with the Clarke County Long Term Recovery office. Ms. Jackson was a member of the Gainestown A.O.H. Church of Gainestown.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Jackson of Gainestown; daughter Erine Jackson of Gainestown; son Jaylen Jackson of Gainestown; mother Loree Murphy of Monroeville; four sisters, Katrina R. Johnson, Beulah Davis, Tiffany Johnson, all of Monroeville and Linda (Barry) Likely of Evergreen; brother Leo Johnson of Michigan; grandmother Mary Lee Brown of Excel; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Travis and Lue Reader-Jackson of Gainestown.

Service will be conducted on Saturday, June 2 at 11 a.m. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11 at Gainestown A.O.H. Church of Gainestown. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
