Melvina S. Odom

The funeral service for Melvina S. Odom, 89, of Laurel, Miss., was March 14 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel with the Rev. Nonnie Jefcoat and the Rev. Bob Holifield, officiating. Burial was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Ms. Odom died March 11, 2007 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. A homemaker and member of Plainway Baptist Church and the Eastern Star Chapter No. 24, she was 89 years old.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny (Jean) Odom of Long Beach, Miss. and Lewis (Pam) Odom of Soso, Miss.; four daughters, Elvis (John) Farr of Raleigh, N.C., Peggy (Danny) Jefcoat of Big Creek Community, Donna Smith of Laurel and Marche Odom of Baton Rouge, La.; sister, Lurline (Vernon) Matthews Mann of Laurel; special niece, Lisa Matthews Jefcoat of Houma, La.; nephew, Larry Matthews of Mary Ester, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Barry Jefcoat, Mark Jefcoat, Mike Jefcoat, Steve Jefcoat, Dean Jefcoat and Scott Odom.

Honorary pallbearers were Clyde Strickland, Jerry Strickland and Larry Matthews.

Velma Morgan Woodard

Velma Morgan Woodard, 74, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died March 29, 2007 in a local hospital. She was a retired seamstress with Vanity Fair Mills and a member of the Grove Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Inez Beek of Daphne; five brothers, Joe Bedwell and Leroy Bedwell Jr., both of York, Herman Bedwell of Mobile, Monroe Ott of Coffeeville and Charles Bedwell of Dothan; sister, Minnie Sumrall of Mobile; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Fowler and son, James Curtis "JC" Morgan Jr.

The funeral service was March 31 at Grove Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David Curtis officiating. Interment was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill with Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directing.

Pallbearers were Randy Bedwell, Wally Bedwell, Craig Hodge, Flin Suther, Benji Elmore, Jimmy Morgan and Deran Morgan.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Arnold Luterman, Dr. Kramer Wells and Dr. Keith Scott.

Jessie McMullen York

Jessie McMullen York, 93, a homemaker and member of River Hill Baptist Church in Salitpa, died April 1, 2007 in an area health care facility.

She is survived by two sons, Eddie York of Saraland and Arlen York of Jackson; two daughters, Faye Overstreet Pugh of Jackson and Flo Burks of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister, Willie Kate McDonald of Baton Rouge, La.; 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was April 3 at River Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Wilton Bennett and Tommy York, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the River Hill Baptist Church.

Aaron Hunt

Aaron "Buddy" Hunt, 93, a retired saw operator for a logging company, died March 30, 2007 at his residence in Alma. He was a member of the Gainestown A.O.H. Church of God in Gainestown.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Rivers Hunt of Alma; five daughters, Clementine (Fred) Edwards of Mobile, Genevia (Paul) Foreman of Jackson, Sandra Jackson of Choctaw Bluff, Julia Hunt and Jennifer (Edward) Williams, both of Alma; five sons, Aaron Hunt Jr. of Mobile, Johnnie Hunt of Manila, Raymond (Elizabeth) Hunt, Lewis (Nettie) Hunt and Westly Hunt, all of Alma; 30 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Saturday, April 7, 11 a.m. at the Gainestown A.O.H. Church of God. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Herndon T. Coate Jr.

Herndon T. "Hank" Coate Jr., 58, a native of Jackson and a resident of Elberta, died April 2, 2007. A graduate of Auburn University, he was a retired inn keeper and currently worked as a home remodeler. He was a member of K.O.E.R., The Point Yacht Club, Fairhope Yacht Club, Brotherhood of the Coast and the Coastal Conservatory Association. He enjoyed sailing, fishing, cycling, kayaking, reading and cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy J. Coate of Elberta; two daughters, Jamie Elizabeth Coate Jones of Jackson and Margaret Herndon Coate Tipton of Spanish Fort; stepson, Jesse Dylan Parkinson of Houston, Texas; brother, Livingston Marmaduke Coate of Spanish Fort; four grandchildren, Walter Clark Tipton and Mary Herndon Tipton, both of Spanish Fort and Hannah Tartt Jones and Haley Benton Jones, both of Jackson.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, April 6, 10 a.m. at the Soldier Creek Waterfront Park at the east end of State Street in Elberta with Mack Funeral Home & Crematory in Robertsdale directing. Memorials may be made to the Lot No. 13, Soldier Creek Park, P.O. Box 157, Montrose, AL 36559.

Bruce A. Martin Jr.

Bruce A. Martin Jr., 67, a resident of Pensacola, Fla. for 27 years, died April 1, 2007. He was a native of Panama City, Fla. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and later retired as a master sergeant. A journalist for the Pensacola News Journal, he received a teaching degree from the University of West Florida, taught at Brownsville and Wedgewood. He also operated a landscaping business called YardJack. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank E. White Jr. of Jackson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Judith A Martin of Pensacola; two daughters, Anne-Marie Martin of Pensacola and Patricia L. Grant of New Hampshire; son, David B. Martin of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Danielle P. Martin of Pensacola and Jesse L. Spears of North Carolina; two sisters, Trudi H. Anders and Anne Latham, both of Alabama and a brother, Frank White III, also of Alabama.

The funeral service was April 4 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Pensacola with the Rev. Clint McBroom officiating. Burial was in the Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors and Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel of Pensacola directing.

Pallbearers were Frank White III, David B. Martin, Charlie Latham, Jesse Latham, Scott Allen, Frank J. Goodbred, Richard E. Grant and Chris Milheim. Honorary pallbearers were Cdr. Donald A. Lehman, USN, retired.

Lyda Elaine Walker Baugh

Lyda Elaine Walker Baugh, 67, a resident of Grove Hill and a homemaker, died April 8, 2007 at a local hospital. She was a member of Bassetts Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Tony Baugh of Grove Hill; two daughters, Carol Starkie of Mobile and Tina Baugh Powell of Dickinson; two sisters, Jeanette Baugh of Grove Hill and Essie Lassiter of Monroeville; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral service was April 11 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. Interment was in the Bassetts Creek Baptist Cemetery. Bessie K. Dees Bessie K. Dees, 98, a native of Hawthorne and a longtime resident of Tibbie, died April 3, 2007 at a nursing facility. She was a member of Tibbie Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include her sister, Gladys K. Madison of Tibbie; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Collier Dees, parents, William Wilson Kirkland and Sarah "Sadie" Vermell Henson Kirkland.

Annie Ree Steele

The funeral service was April 5 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with the Rev. Al Brown officiating. Interment was in the Old Washington Cemetery in Hawthorne.

Myra Eva Hart

Myra Eva Hart, 87, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 in an area hospital. She was a native of Fulton and a resident of Grove Hill. A retired seamstress at Vanity Fair, she was a member of Asbury Baptist Church in Grove Hill.

Survivors include a son, Bert Hart of Chunchula; two daughters, Betty Council of Fulton and Theresa Newburn of Citronelle; two sisters, Mildred Hicks and Molly Jewel Sticher ?; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded death husband Jesse Clyde Hart Sr., son, Clyde Hart Jr., mother, Ella White McHaney and stepmother, Maggie Baugh.

The funeral service was April 9, 2 p.m. at Asbury Baptist Church in Grove Hill with the Rev. Don White officiating. Interment was in the Wade-Hicks-Hart Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directing.

Hampton R. Mitchem

Hampton R. "Mitch" Mitchem, 74, born Jan. 23, 1933, was raised in Jackson by his parents, the late James Curtis and Alice Vivian Mitchem. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. A retired foreman for the transportation department at NASNI, he served as a firefighter at North Island. He was a private flight instructor, received a degree in computer programming and political science, and acquired a ham radio license. A self-taught musician, he played the guitar and harmonica. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association 14 and the Elks 1812 of El Cajon. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Mitchem and Palmer Mitchem.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Mitchem of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Terri Prato and Tammy (Richard) Brown; son Tom Mitchem; two brothers, Roy (Fanny) Mitchem of Jackson and Max (Betty) Mitchem of Cedar Bluff; three sisters, Meloise Blount of Hot Springs, Ark., Ellen (Herndon) Rivers of Grove Hill and Ethel Baggett of Mobile; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
