Jean Roberta Jackson

Jean Roberta Jackson, died Feb. 16, 2007 at a local hospital in Jackson at the age of 66. A native of Camden and a resident of Jackson, she was a retired bookkeeper for Jackson Academy and a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson.

She is survived by her husband, Carl A. Jackson of Jackson; daughter, Carla Huggins of Hoover; two brothers, Bob "Spec" McCants of Jackson and Nathan McCants of Dothan; four sisters, Betty Ann Nichols and Barbara Brewer, both of Jackson, Mary Middleton of Salitpa and Dinah Ellis of Spanish Fort; two grandchildren, Anna Kathryn Huggins and Maggie Huggins, both of Hoover.

The funeral service was Feb. 18 at the First Baptist Church of Jackson with the Dr. Rev. Tim Huie officiating. Burial was in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Pallbearers were Billy Brewer, Greg Brewer, John McCants, Chris McCants, Stacy McCants and Johnny Middleton.

Preston Foster Weaver

Preston Foster Weaver, 35, a resident of McIntosh and a native of Mobile, died Feb. 14, 2007 at his residence. He was a member of Reed's Chapel Baptist Church in McIntosh.

Survivors include his father, Bill E. Weaver Sr. of McIntosh; mother, Dovie J. Weaver of McIntosh; three sisters, Jossetta R. (Michael) Weaver of Mt. Vernon and Johanna J. (Kevin) Fields of McIntosh and Jennifer S. (Craig) Lang, all of McIntosh; 11 nieces and nephews and one great-nephew.

The funeral service was Feb. 17 at Memorial Baptist Church in McIntosh. Interment was in the Weaver Family Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Bernice Wilson Armistead

Bernice Wilson Armistead, 77, a homemaker, died Feb. 15, 2007 at Jackson Health Care Facility. A resident of Jackson, she was a member of Peniel Baptist Church and the Santa Fe Chapter 505 Order of the Eastern Star.

The funeral service was Feb. 17 at Peniel Baptist Church with the Revs. Marion Ball and Leon Parnell officiating. Burial was in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home of Thomasville directing.

Pallbearers were Ernest Slade, Douglas Atchison, John Moseley, Leslie E. Hoven, Ward Edge and Dale Jordan.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Eastern Star Santa Fe Chapter 505 of Jackson.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Maybon Armistead of Jackson; two brothers, James E. Wilson of Saraland and Graham Wilson of Jackson; sister, Doris W. Hoven of Grove Hill; longtime friend, Willie Grace Fendley, special friend, Delilah Harris and many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Joseph Prett Calhoun

The Rev. Joseph Prett Calhoun, 76, son of the late Pastor Willard Calhoun Sr. and the late Annie Bell Jones Calhoun, died Feb. 16, 2007. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was the oldest and longest pastor to serve at the Bethel Baptist Association. A former assistant pastor and longtime member of St. Joseph Baptist Church in Mobile, former pastor of Bells Chapel Baptist Church and the New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Lower Peachtree, he served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Sweet Water for 41 years.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Lee Calhoun; five children, Lorenzo McCaskill of Dickerson, Bessie (Jerome) Henderson of Mobile, Cheryle Castleberry and Jan Parker, both of Jacksonville, Fla. and Joseph Prett Calhoun Jr. of Germany; seven stepchildren, Carlos (Carol) Calhoun, Sharon Benefield, Arthur Holt, Cheryl (Rickey) Reed, all of Mobile, Charlotte (Marvin) Barge, Douglas Molette, all of Duluth, Ga. and Daren Bradley, of Jacksonville; three brothers, Elder Samuel L. (Joyce) Calhoun Sr. of Linden, Robert S. (Marie) Calhoun and Robert L. (Ora Lee) Calhoun, all of Dickerson, four sisters, Mary Lee Henderson of Dickerson, Bessie M. Phillips and Willie B. White, both of Thomasville and Mattie B. Jackson of Mobile. He was preceded in death by two brothers, C.D. Calhoun and Elder Williard Calhoun and a sister, Adline Calhoun; 39 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Feb. 24, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Baptist Church in Mobile with Hodge Funeral Home of Mobile directing.

Ellen Elsie Crenshaw Ruppert

Ellen Elsie Crenshaw "Boots" Ruppert, 90, died Feb.14, 2007 at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.

A native of Walker County, she was a longtime resident of West Covina, Calif. Prior to moving to Carroll Place, an assisted living facility in Fairhope, she resided in Jackson. She was a former resident of Banning, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Rudolph Rowton of West Covina and her husband of 20 years, Edward E. Ruppert of Banning.

Survivors include a sister, Jeanette C. Boykin of Brantley; niece and caretaker, Linda H. Breedlove of Jackson; stepson, Michael Ruppert of Oregon; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Employed in the fine jewelry department of Broadway Department Store in Los Angeles, Calif. she worked well into her 70s.

A memorial service was Saturday, Feb. 17 in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church of Jackson with the Rev. Jim DuFriend officiating. Interment will be later this month in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Lillie Peoples James

Lillie Peoples James, a native of Barlow Bend and a resident of Sunflower, died Feb. 19, 2007 at Washington County Nursing Home. She was a member of Little Sunflower No. 3 Baptist Church and the senior choir.

She is survived by two sons, Dan James of Jackson and Jessie James of Sunflower; sister, Lelia Peoples Martin of Mobile; 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 24 from 12 noon until the funeral hour of 1 p.m. at the Mt. Shady A.M.E. Zion Church in Sunflower. Burial will be in the Redhill Cemetery in Sunflower with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.

Rodrick Harvey Dearmon

Rodrick Harvey Dearmon, 84, died Feb. 27, 2007 at his residence in Jackson. A member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Jackson, he was retired from Boise where he worked in the electrical and instrumentation department.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Dearmon of Jackson; son, Michael Dearmon of Sommerville, Tenn.; two daughters, Janice (Russell) Wilson of Manassas, Va. and Linda (Robert) Chambless of Millry; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be Thursday, March 1(today) in the Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Edna Lunsford Justice

Edna Lunsford Justice, 88, a resident of Enterprise and a native of Grove Hill, died Feb. 21, 2007 at her home. She was a retired seamstress for Vanity Fair and a member of Magnolia Assembly of God.

She is survived by a son, Robert Lunsford of Enterprise; daughter, Betty Hall of El Paso, Texas; sister, Annie Lou Downey of Grove Hill; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Feb. 24 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill. Burial was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill.

Mavis Edna Eddins Kendrick

Mavis Edna Eddins Kendrick, 76, a native of China Grove, died Feb. 26, 2007 in Mobile. A resident in Chatom for the last 17 years, she was a retired bank teller for SouthWest Bank in Chatom and a member of the First Baptist Church in Chatom.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Paul Kendrick of Chatom, who is the director of Missions for the Washington Baptist Association; three sons, Milton (Carol) Kendrick of Marianna, Fla. and twin sons, Ronald (Nita) Kendrick of Montgomery and Russell (Donna) Kendrick, both of Monroeville; two daughters, Lisa (Ronnie) Smoke of Deatsville and Candace (Dr. Don) Hines of Troy; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was at Zion Chapel Baptist Church in Elba. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Caring Hearts Center Building Fund in care of the Washington Baptist Association, P.O. Box 1447, Chatom, AL 36518.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Thomas Kendrick, Kris Kendrick, Jonathan Kendrick, Matt Kendrick, Josh Kendrick, Lowell Thomas, David Ebarb and Daniel Ebarb.

Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Alicia Kendrick, Christi Register, Laurie Kendrick, Kimberly Thomas, Britney Asher and ministers, wives and widows of ministers.
