Paul W. Mackey

Funeral services for Paul W. Mackey, 83, of LaFayette will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at White Hall Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Eduardo Vines will officiate. Burial will follow at Handy Cemetery in LaFayette.

Mr. Mackey died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at LaFayette Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Chambers County. He was a deacon at White Hall Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Princetta Mackey of LaFayette; nine children, Pauline Drayton-Harris and husband Earl of Jacksonville, Fla., Vannie Rudean Robinson and husband Vincent of Alcoa, Tenn., William Kenneth Mackey and wife Sharon of Toms River, N.J., Deborah T. Bonner of Jacksonville, Fla., Priscilla A. Scales and husband Stan of Conyers, Ga., Sarah L. McGraw and husband Rickey of Hampton Cove, Jewel P. Brown of Corydon, Ind., Mary Ann Cooper of Boston, and Paul Moss of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Carrie Bell Holloway of Jonesboro, Ga., Caldonia Shealey and husband L.C. of LaFayette and Ella Pearl Trammell of Madison; one sister-in-law, Dennie Mae Mackey of Five Points; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Pearl Mackey.

Vines Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Telles Allen of Alexander City died Aug. 13, 2003, at Adams Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by Wright's Funeral Home.

Elbert Johnson of Alexander City died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Russell Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by Armour's Memorial Funeral Home.

Julian "Comer" Earles

1931-2003

Memorial services for Julian "Comer" Earles, 72, of Cusseta will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Wallace Chapel Baptist Church in Opelika. The Revs. Samford Dykes and Leroy Pike will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to service time at Wallace Chapel Baptist Church in Opelika.

Mr. Earles died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. He was born Sept. 7, 1931, in Jonesboro, Ga., to Comer Earles Sr. and Alma Moody Earles. He served in the U.S. Marines and retired after 35 years from Southern Electronics in Opelika. He was a member of Wallace Chapel Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with his wife, bulldogs and playing dominos.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anna B. Earles; one brother, Jimmy Earles and wife Betty of McDonough, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine Earles.

Donations may be made to Wallace Chapel Baptist Church, Hwy. 29 North, Cusseta, AL 36852.

Joyce B. Bennett

1934-2003

Memorial services for Joyce B. Bennett, 69, of Alexander City will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Heritage Chapel. Donna Thornburg and J.O. Rogers will officiate.

Mrs. Bennett died Sept. 14, 2003, at Adam's Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Mississippi to Elmer and Laidale Prestridge.

She is survived by three sons, Robert K. Horne and Mark D. Horne, both of Smithville, Miss., and Roy Horne of Wyoming, Mich.; two daughters, Melinda K. Horne of Smithville, Miss., and Joy Smith of Alexander City; three brothers, Verdale Prestridge of Smithville, Miss., Adale Prestridge of Mississippi and Scott P. Prestridge of Columbus, Miss.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Calvin Odem

1943-2003

Funeral services for John Calvin Odem of Goodwater will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Millerville. The Rev. John D. Sandlin will officiate. Burial will follow at Macedonia Memorial Cemetery in Goodwater.

Mr. Odem died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. He was born Sept. 27, 1943, in Clay County to John Henry and Emma Hayes Odem.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye J. Odem of Goodwater; two sons, Michael Odem and wife Jessie of Goodwater and Starsky L. Simmons of Millerville; three daughters, Laviddia Simmons and husband Lovell and Tara Stowe and husband Michael, all of Goodwater, and Pamela Brooks and husband Marcus of Sylacauga; six sisters, Louise Mayes and husband Curtis of Chicago, Sarah Crease and husband Otis of Millerville, Emma Odem of Ashland, Linda Dixon and husband James and Bessie Kelley and husband Calvin, all of Mount Olive, and Jo Catherine Simmons and husband John of Goodwater; four brothers, Arthur Odem and wife Fannie and Harvey Odem and wife Peggy, all of Goodwater, Jerry Oliver and wife Felita of Millerville and Morris Oliver of Mount Olive; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Armour's Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Daniel "Dan" Carlisle

1952-2003

Funeral services for George Daniel "Dan" Carlisle, 71, of Alexander City will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Lenox Mallory and Ron Gonia will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003.

Mr. Carlisle died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Chapman Healthcare Center. He was born April 18, 1932, in Tallapoosa County to Howard O'Neil Carlisle and Lavelle Meadows Carlisle. He worked as a supervisor in the gas department for the City of Alexander City for 44 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one son, Howard Dean Carlisle of Trussville; two daughters, Amanda Lynne Laughlin of Charlotte, N.C., and Sarah Danette Davis of Dadeville; 12 grandchildren, Brett Davis and wife Sonya, Russell Davis and wife Aimee, Adam Davis and wife Becky, Justin Davis, Rebekah Davis, Jordan Davis, Meredith Laughlin, Catherine Laughlin, Daniel Laughlin, Ashley Carlisle, Benjamin Carlisle and Seth Carlisle; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Laughlin, Brynleigh Carlisle Davis and Sheridan Miranda Davis; and two sisters, June Machen of Houston, Texas and Mary Catherine Whitaker of Tallassee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Carlisle.

L.D. Walker Benton Sr.

1917-2003

Funeral services for L.D. Walker Benton Sr., 86, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Lancaster will officiate. Entombment will follow at Hillview Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003.

Mr. Benton died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Coosa County to Arthur Benton and Roma Lee Peoples Benton. He worked as a supervisor for Russell Corp. for more than 40 years, was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fannie Belle Benton of Alexander City; one son, L.D. Benton Jr. and wife Pam of Alexander City; one daughter, Jane Howell and husband Scotty of Alexander City; two grandsons, Cody Benton and John Howell, both of Alexander City; three granddaughters, Buffie Benton Stegall and husband Jeff of Alexander City, Jamie Benton Rogers and husband Troy of Birmingham and Hadley Howell of Alexander City; one brother, Robert Benton of Alexander City and one sister, Levis Johnson of Alexander City.

The family will accept flowers or memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 726, Alexander City, AL 35011 or Friends of Hospice, 3368 U.S. Hwy. 280, Suite G-10, Alexander City, AL 35011.
