Dera Mae Hooks

1923-2003

Funeral services for Dera Mae Hooks, 80, of LaFayette will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Rehope Baptist Church in LaFayette. The Rev. H.L. Jones will officiate. Burial will follow at Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery in Welch.

Mrs. Hooks died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. She was born July 1, 1923, in Chambers County. She was an only child. She was married to the late James Henry Hooks for 51 years and they had 11 children. She was an active member of Canaan Baptist Church and later Rehope Baptist Church. She held many positions in the church over the years but her true gift was hospitality. This gift was obvious in her church, community and home.

She is survived by 10 children, Jesse James Hooks and wife Mary of Hartford, Conn., Alice Trammell, Hattie Brooks and husband Willie Frank, Irene Roundtree and husband Jerry, all of Five Points, Lemerle Gunn and husband Leophus of Detroit, Jessie Mae Griffin and husband Godfrey and Stanley Hooks and wife Cynthia, Ronnie Hooks and wife Cynthia, all of Fredonia, Sheila Higgins and husband the Rev. Sanders of Milltown, Gwendolyn Hooks of Detroit; a special cousin, Cyra Motley of Memphis; one sister-in-law, Estella Hooks of LaGrange, Ga.; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one child, Willie Howard Hooks.

Vines Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tommie T. Gipson Williams

1916-2003

Funeral services for Tommie T. Gipson Williams, 86, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Marshall Street Church of God. The Rev. Al Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow at Smyrna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, and at the church for one hour prior to services.

Mrs. Williams died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at her residence. She was born in LaGrange, Ga., on Aug. 18, 1916, to John Gipson and Dovieline Brown Gipson. She worked as a homemaker and was a faithful member of Marshall Street Church of God.

She is survived by two daughters, Louise Fuller and husband David and Peggie Garrett and husband Billy, all of Alexander City; one son, Marlin Rudolph Hanna and wife Brenda of Langlois, Ore.; nine grandchildren, Stanley Fuller and wife Sheila, Delaine Parker and husband Ricky, Darren Fuller and wife Patricia, Michael Hanna and wife Janice, and Celina Strickland and husband Jason, all of Alexander City, John Hanna and wife Sandy and Jimmy Hanna, all of California, Tommy Garrett and wife Andrea and Keith Garrett and wife Heather, all of Michigan; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Luvelia Wooten of Opelika.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, Rudolph Hanna and Ernest C. Williams.

Barbara J. Denning

1932-2003

Barbara J. Denning, 72, formerly of Dadeville, will be buried in the family plot in Hot Springs, S.D.

She died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003. She was born in Oelrichs, S.D., on July 3, 1931, and went to school in Hot Springs, S.D. She graduated summa cum laude. She lived in StillWaters for 21 years and Alexander City for three years. She spent the last two years living with her only son, Robert, in Saint Cloud, Fla.

She is survived by her son, Robert T. Denning and wife Doni; three grandsons, Jason, Joseph and Jacob Denning; one great-grandson, Jeremiah Denning; nieces and nephews, Gary Shaw and wife Patty of Cheyenne, Wy., Christine Dunn of Hot Springs, S.D., Terry Johnston and Kenna Sue of California and Clayton of Chicago and one brother-in-law, Elden Amen of Hot Springs, S.D.

Oscoela Memory Gardens Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Francis Grady Vickers

1909-2003

Funeral services for Francis Grady Vickers, 93, of Alexander City will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Heritage Chapel. The Rev. Bobby Meyers will officiate. Burial will follow at Fellowship Cemetery. Visitation was from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003.

Mr. Vickers died Aug. 4, 2003, at Chapman Healthcare. He was born Oct. 18, 1909, in Clay County to William Jackson and Nancy Hale Vickers. He was retired from Russell Corp.

He is survived by his wife Myra Lavert Dunaway Vickers; four daughters, Virginia Holley of Lake City, Fla., Shirley Gardner and Glenda Lindsey, both of Alexander City, and Peggy Rider and husband Wade of Equality; one sister, Eunice Gibson of Talladega; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Magnolia H. Haynes

July 30, 2003

Funeral services for Magnolia H. Haynes, 92, of Sylacauga were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Curtis and Son North Chapel. The Revs. David Mann and Jim Bolton officiated. Burial followed at Munford Church of Christ Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003.

Mrs. Haynes died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Sylacauga Healthcare. She was a member of Munford Church of Christ. She was a native of Munford and had been in Sylacauga Healthcare for the last several years.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty H. Moore of Weogufka and Norma J. Ekholm of Springfield, Mo.; one sister, Blanche Barker of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joey Moore, Josh Moore, Elmo Hinkman, Bill Hindman, Herbert Haynes and Bobby Haynes.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

William Darby Smith

Aug. 4, 2003

William Darby Smith of Kellyton died Aug. 4, 2003, at Russell Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by Wright's Funeral Home.

Rosa Sullins Ballard

1909-2003

Funeral services for Rosa Sullins Ballard, 93, of Alexander City will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. George Stewart will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2003, and one hour prior to funeral services on Thursday.

Mrs. Ballard died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. She was born Nov. 1, 1909, in Hamilton to William Sullins and Anna Carter Sullins. She was a member of Orr Street Baptist Church for 50 years, order of the Eastern Star and Woodman of the World. She worked at Edco Discount Center for 17 and a half years.

She is survived by one son, Billy Ray Ballard and wife Carolyn of Montgomery; one grandson, Lynn Ballard and wife Sherrie of Montgomery; one great-granddaughter, Layne Ballard of Montgomery; and one great-grandson, Jake Ballard of Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn Ballard; son, Charles Lynn Ballard; and granddaughter, Shelia Joyce Ballard.

Radney Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jimelvin Tiequne Readay Davis

Aug. 9, 2003

Funeral services for Jimelvin Tiequne Readay Davis of Alexander City were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Wright's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Elam No. 1 Cemetery. Rev. Roderick Williams officiated.

Infant Davis died on Aug. 7, 2003 at Children's Hospital. He was born July 13, 2003, to Melvin D. Moon and Shameka S. Davis.

He is survived by his mother, Shameka S. Davis and his father, Melvin D. Moon, both of Alexander City; two sisters, Shantarion Carter and LaJaya Carter both of Alexander City; his grandparents, Willie and Bobbie Carter of Kellyton, Melvin Wyckoff of Cleveland and Dorothy J. Moon of Alexander City; a step-grandfather, Willie J Graham of Alexander City; two great-grandmothers, Hester Moon of Alexander City and Betty Davis of Kellyton; three aunts, four uncles and a host of other relatives and friends.

Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
