Jean Jefferies Sornsin

A rosary for Jean Jefferies Sornsin, 76, of Cullman, formerly of Fargo, N.D., will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Fr. Kevin McGrath officiating. Funeral services will be in Fargo.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Sornsin died Thursday, Jan. 15, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born in Dickinson, N.D. on July 21, 1927, to William and Claire Hemmer Jefferies. She married Earl W. Sornsin on Nov. 27, 1948. They lived in Fargo and traveled extensively before retiring to Alabama in 1989. She worked at the Cullman K-Mart Store for the past nine years. She and her husband are members of Sacred Heart Parish.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jane Stevenson; and four brothers, Bill Jr., Don, Jack and Jim Jefferies.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Earl Sornsin of Cullman; eight children, James (Karol) Sornsin of Cullman; Jeanette Sornsin of Huntsville; Peg (Paul) Smith of Minnetonka, Minn.; Patt (Chuck Parker) Sornsin of Kailua, Hawaii; Jeffery (Nancy) Sornsin, Dan Sornsin and Chuck Sornsin, all of Fargo, N.D., and Beth Sornsin of Goleta, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Michael, Jared, Ashley, Kristen, Nora and Joe.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Ralph Edison Salter Sr.

Funeral services for Ralph Edison Salter Sr., 72, of Blountsville will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Blountsville United Methodist Church, the Rev. Michael Carver officiating, with Burial in Blountsville Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Salter died Thursday, Jan. 15 at his residence. He was born Nov. 19, 1931 in Birmingham to Reuben Ralph and Oneida DeRamus Salter. He was retired from G.E. Major Appliance Redistribution. He was a member of Blountsville United Methodist Church. He volunteered in mission work in Georgia and Alabama. He was a 1951 graduate of Ensley High School in Birmingham and attended Auburn University for one year.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Cory Salter of Blountsville; four daughters, Martha L. (Jerome) Graham of Boaz, Ruth H. (Tony) Sutherland and Libby D. (Rickey) McCay, both of Altoona, and Terri L. (Donald) Lowery of Albertville; four sons, Ralph E. (Deborah) Salter Jr. of Altoona, David M. (Bobbie) Salter of Pace, Fla., Kenneth D. Salter of Milton, Fla. and Steven W. Salter of Albertville; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel S. Clark.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Methodist Children's Home, P.O. Box 830, Selma, Ala. 368702 or to ALS Association Research, 27001 Agoura Rd. Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, Calif. 91301.

Pallbearers will be Cleve Green, Bart Blocker, O.K. Alexander, Jim Seadler, David Neill and Andy Neill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dan C. Holliman, Hudson Mosley, Bob Russell, James Cheatham, Vic Schneider and Fred Kleckley.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Neta Von Horning

Funeral services for Neta Von Horning, 70, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Max Hagood officiating, with Burial at Crossroads Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Horning died Saturday, Jan. 17, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 16, 1933, in Cullman County to Curtis Dow and Bertha McSwain Eady. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Horning; her sister, Cora Faye Eady Brown, and her brother, O.V. Eady.

Survivors include two sisters, I.V. Cupp and Mary Avery; and three nieces, Gina Denson, Mary Bailey and Renee Laney.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles James Butler

Funeral services for Charles James Butler, 66, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Trueman Davis officiating, with Burial at Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Butler died Saturday, Jan. 17, at his residence. He was born Aug. 31, 1937, in Cullman County to Marvin and Eunice Bailey Butler. He was a longtime member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Charles Anthony "Tony" Butler; and one granddaughter, Amanda Butler.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Adams Butler of Hanceville; four sons, David Randall (Peggie) Butler of Hayden, James Christopher (Rita) Butler of Vinemont, William Samuel "Sam" (Shea) Butler of Cullman and Adam Giles of Hanceville; two granddaughters, Megan O'Shea Butler of Cullman and Charlotte Harris of Arab; one stepgranddaughter, Rosanne Hooper of Hanceville; one stepgrandson, Stephen Hooper of Hanceville; two great-grandchildren; and his former daughter-in-law, Wanda Butler McMurrey of Hanceville.

Pallbearers will be Fritz Gable, Doug Duke, Jeff Gable, Larry Cornelius, Bob White and Larry Johns.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty Joyce Harper

Funeral services for Betty Joyce Harper, 71, of Cullman, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Moss-Service Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Ray Lathem officiating, with Burial at Pleasant Grove Methodist Cemetery in Hulaco.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harper died Friday, Jan. 16, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born March 31, 1932, to Dewey and Ethel Ward Greene. She was a mental health worker with the state of Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, Doug (Delores) Harper of Albertville and David (Sandy) Harper of Franklin, Tenn.; two daughters, Jan (J.R.) Stapler of Waynesville, N.C., and Kim (Tony) McNutt of Cullman; three sisters, Ceidell Greene of Cullman and Dorothy Cox and Nell Kelly, both of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was Saturday.

Alfred "Al" Clayton Swindle

Funeral services for Alfred "Al" Clayton Swindle, 81, of Cullman, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Moss-Service Funeral Chapel, Glenn Posey and Randy Owens officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swindle died Friday, Jan. 16, at Woodland Medical Center. He was born June 22, 1922, to Daniel and Myrtle Poole Swindle. He was a member of East Cullman Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maudie Bernice Swindle; one son, Eric Ray Swindle; and one brother, Ray Erskine Swindle.

Survivors include one son, Jerry W. Swindle of Cullman; one daughter, Donna (David) Sohn of Cullman; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Gustavo) Garcia of Huntsville and Jamin D. Bates and Anthony Dewayne Swindle, both of Cullman; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher Garcia and Annalizbeth Garcia, both of Huntsville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hattie Pauline Whittle

Funeral services for Hattie Pauline Whittle, 75, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Phillip Sessions officiating, with Burial in Center Grove Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Whittle died Saturday, Jan. 17, at Woodland Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1928, in Lawrence County to William T. and Mattie Simmons Riggs. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James E. Whittle; seven brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include four sons, Randy (Janice) Robinson, Tim (Donna) Whittle and Rodney (Tammy) Whittle, all of Cullman, and Jeffery (Liz) Whittle of Georgia; a daughter, Mary (Phillip) Sessions of Decatur; nine grandchildren, Vanessa Robinson, Jacob Whittle, Corey Whittle, Isaac Whittle, Sydney Whittle, Peyton Whittle, Conley Whittle, Chanler Whittle and Cameron Whittle; and a great-grandchild, Damien Robinson.

Visitation was Monday.

Lillie Mae Woods

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Woods, 84, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Shirley Witcher and Mike Watson officiating, with Burial in Emeus Cemetery.

Mrs. Woods died Sunday, Jan. 18, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Cullman County to William Riley and Addie Watson Powell. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hobson C. Woods; a son, Jerry Ross Woods; a daughter-in-law, Marie Woods; two sisters, Mildred Higgins and Eula Powell; and a brother, Jack Powell.

Survivors include six sons, Tommy Cleo Woods of Oroville, Calif.; Darrell Jackie (Elizabeth) Woods of Frazier, Colo.; and Eddie Wayne (Shelia) Woods, Larry Eugene (Holly) Woods, Barry Dean Woods and Garry Jo (Katrina) Woods, all of Cullman; a daughter, Joyce Ann Dean of Cullman; six brothers, Alvie Powell and Donald Powell, both of Ocala, Fla.; Odis Powell of Addison, Edward Powell and William Powell, both of Interlachen, Fla.; and Ronald Powell of Waverly, Ky.; three sisters, Ruth Clayton of Sand Mountain, Dorothy Hewett of Atlanta and Shirley DuVall of Ocala, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Kathleen B. McAnnally

Funeral services for Kathleen B. McAnnally, 89, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Rev. Bill Burkett officiating, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McAnnally died Sunday, Jan. 18, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 1, 1914, in Alabama to Grover C. and Ara Bell Oden Henderson. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harrison D. McAnnally; a sister, Jessie Mae Henderson; and four brothers, Coyt W. Henderson, Asa "Buck Henderson," Carl H. Henderson and Charles A. Henderson.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat (Stormy) Woods and Peggy (Jimmy) Wallace; two brothers, Millard W. Henderson and G.C. Junior Henderson; a sister, Elaine B. McAnnally; four grandchildren, Jerry Woods, Wes Woods, Brad Wallace and Kevin Wallace; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Monday.

James T. Reaid

Funeral services for James T. Reaid, 76, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Revs. Andy Coffey and Millard Holmes officiating, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reaid died Sunday, Jan. 18, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born April 19, 1927, to John and Adie Bowen Reaid. He was a retired carpenter and a Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Ovadie Gray Reaid; three sons, Michael (Sue Ann) Reaid of Commerce, Ga., and Lee Reaid and Billy (Peggy) Reaid, both of Cullman; two daughters, Charlotte (James) Brandon of Cullman and Juanita (Patrick) Pajao of Hilton Head, S.C.; a brother, Tommy Reaid of Athens; five sisters, Maudine Shaw and Frances Pritchard, both of Cullman, Imogene Barfoot of Fultondale, Polly Allard of Michigan and Peggy Hall of Fort Worth, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Brooks Davis and Declan Cornett.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edward Earl Bailey

Memorial services for Edward Earl Bailey, 83, of Columbia, S.C., will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, S.C. Burial will be at a later date in Holly Pond.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bailey died Sunday, Jan. 18. He was born in Cullman. He served in the Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant pilot, later as a major. He served in the South West Pacific and was awarded the Silver Star, the Air Medal, Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Theater with battle stars, American Defense Medal, American Theater Medal and World War II Victory Medal. His plane was shot down in New Guinea, leaving him wounded and alone in the jungle for 11 days before being rescued by an Australian patrol. He was a former member of Forest Lake Club and the Columbia Cotillion Club and a founding member, lifetime member and former commodore of the Columbia Sailing Club. At the time of his death, he was flag admiral of the Irmo Navy. He was the former president of Spradley-Bailey, Inc. and Textile Rentals, Inc. He formerly was married to Mary Simpson Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Newton Bailey; and his mother, Maude Davis Bailey Johnson.

Survivors include two sons, Edward E. Bailey Jr. of Surfside Beach, S.C. and George S. (Ford) Bailey of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, Scott E. (Nancye) Bailey, M. Christopher (Stephanie) Bailey, W. Darnall B. Bailey and Mary Bond S. Bailey, all of Columbia, S.C., and Anne Screven Bailey of Austin, Texas; and great-granddaughter, Rebecca Kennedy Bailey of Columbia, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Palmetto Health Foundation.

Thomas Jerry Dye

Funeral services for Thomas Jerry Dye, 65, of Falkville will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Peck Funeral Chapel, Billy Gable officiating, with Burial in New Hope North Cemetery.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dye died Saturday, Jan. 17 ,in Winston County. He was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Cullman to James and Clara Carrol Dye. He was of the Methodist faith. He was retired from Americold, Inc. He was a production machine operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert Dye and Holbert Dye.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Dye of Falkville; two sons, Tim Dye of Cullman and Jeff Dye of Falkville; a daughter, Tammy Hurd of Falkville; a brother, Travis Lamar Dye of Cullman; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Roger Young, Kenny Young, Mark Young, Ben Riner Jr., Jason Bomar and Daniel Bomar.

Visitation was Monday.
