Bette Jane Houlditch Sawyer
Memorial services for Bette Jane Houlditch Sawyer, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville, Fla.
Mrs. Sawyer died Sunday, March 14, at the E.T. York Care Center of North Central Florida in Gainesville, Fla. Mrs. Sawyer was an Alabama native, a retired adult education teacher and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville. Born Feb. 10, 1924, in Anniston, Mrs. Sawyer was educated in the public schools of Anniston and Birmingham. She was a 1944 graduate of Howard College (now Samford University) where she was awarded the Hypatia Cup as the outstanding female senior.
In 1944 she became a reporter for the Birmingham Age-Herald newspaper. She served as an editorial assistant for Progressive Farmer magazine, also in Birmingham, from 1945-1946.
She was assistant instructor of business writing at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from 1948 to 1950, where she also did graduate work. She continued her graduate education at the University of Connecticut in Storrs from 1950-1951 and received a master of arts degree from the University of Florida in 1977.
From 1971 to 1975 she taught in the Laubach Literacy Tutoring program in Gainesville and served as an assistant in reading education at Santa Fe Community College from 1977 to 1979. In October 1979, she started Alachua County's IMTS Reading Lab for adults. She later taught at the Lofton Center, a high school for adults, retiring in 1990.
In retirement, Ms. Sawyer avidly pursued her avocation as a short-story writer, with several of her pieces appearing in national publications. She was also an accomplished vocal soloist and church choir member.
She was a member and past vice president of the League of Women Voters of Alachua County and a member of the Gainesville Rose Society, winning several local show awards.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Herbert A. Sawyer, professor emeritus at the University of Florida; a son, Allen Walter Sawyer of Gainesville; a daughter, Vivian Ruth (Tom Nolan) Sawyer of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Vivian Houlditch Hart of Cullman; two sisters-in-law, Doris Sawyer Jimison of Englewood, Fla., and Barbara Sawyer Bradley of Albany, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the classical music program at Trinity United Methodist Church at 4000 Northwest 53rd Ave., Gainesville, Fla., or to the Hypatia Scholarship Fund at Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Dr., Birmingham, Ala. 35229.
Joseph John 'Joe' Schmuck
Funeral services for Joseph John "Joe" Schmuck, 64, of Vinemont will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Kevin McGrath officiating, with Burial in the Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Schmuck died Thursday, March 18, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born March 5, 1940, in Cullman County to Joe T. and Barbara Link Schmuck. He was a retired auto upholsterer for General Motors. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Cullman Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and Frank Schmuck; and one sister, Elizabeth Schmuck.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Catherine West; a daughter, Jean Marie Schmuck of Michigan; a brother, Anthony Schmuck of Decatur; four sisters, Catherine (Alvin) Whisenhunt of Vinemont, Margaret M. (Rick) Wiley of Warrior and Marie Ilderton and Frances (John) Mercer, both of Cullman; nine nieces; five nephews; nine great-nephews; and 12 great-nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Family Life Center at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.
Burdean Burdette
Funeral services for Burdean Burdette, 52, of Hanceville, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, Pastor Randy Booth officiating, with Burial in Fairview West Cemetery in Hanceville.

Mrs. Burdette died Wednesday, March 17, in Cullman. She was born Oct. 23, 1951, in Cullman to Calvin and Iva Alexander Tolbert. She was a longtime member of Stouts Mountain Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Duel Tolbert.
Survivors include her husband, William Burdette of Hanceville; one daughter, Bridgette (Scott) Arnold of Garden City; one son, Brian (Amy) Burdette of Eva; four sisters, Linda Boyd of Cullman, Ethelene Crawford of Hanceville, Imogene Higgins of Gulf Shores and Margie Tolbert of Alabaster; and eight grandchildren, Andrew Arbet, Ethan Arbet, Danielle Burdette, Iva Burdette, Tanner Burdette and William Blake Burdette, all of Eva, and Jesse Arnold and Kattie Arnold, both of Garden City.
Pallbearers will be Danny Hollis, Mark Cornelius, Butch Bradford, Matt Blake, Joey Johnson and Edward Roberson.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Hazel Tucker
Funeral services for Hazel Tucker, 62, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Curtis Cochran officiating, with Burial in Valley Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Tucker died Saturday, March 20, at her residence. She was born March 23, 1941, in Cullman County to Benjamin and Ollie Mae Clark Chidester. She was a disabled customer service representative for Wal-Mart for 17 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Phillip Tucker; two brothers, Herman Clark and Robert Clark; two half-brothers, Roy Clark and Walter Clark; and two half-sisters, Annie Belle Evans and Christine Whisenhunt.
Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Tucker; two daughters, Lisa Garmon and Susan (Daniel) Hooper, both of Cullman; three brothers, Marvin Clark of Michigan and Willard (Joanne) Clark and Dwight Clark, both of Cullman; one sister, Marie (Bob) Axt of Michigan; one half-sister, Ollie Mae Smith of Cullman; and three grandchildren, Matthew Hooper, Jessica Garmon and Joshua Hooper.

Vera Baker Davis
Funeral services for Vera Baker Davis, 93, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, Bill Cavener and Ronald Earwood officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Davis died Friday, March 19, at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 20, 1910, in Baileyton to Russell L. and Mattie Haynes Baker. She was a registered nurse for 41 years. She was one of the first five nurses at Cullman County Hospital, where she worked for many years. She then worked as a Cullman County health nurse for 17 years. She also worked at Hartselle Hospital and Doctors (Woodland) Hospital. She served as a role model for many young nurses, encouraging them to continue their education and helping them gain admittance to nursing school.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Howard "Mutt" Baker and Horace Baker.
Survivors include one son, Charles Davis of Cullman; one daughter, Jan Cole of Cullman; one brother, Harold Baker of Brandon, Miss.; one sister, Verna Baker Thrower of Arab; and one granddaughter, Lori Cole of Cullman.
Pallbearers will be Philip Baker, Max Baker, Paul Tucker; Rayburn Bradley, Lance Weaver and Randy Parris.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Mildred Wilkinson Cason
Funeral services for Mildred Wilkinson Cason, 78, of Baileyton will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 22, at Mt. Vernon Primitive Baptist Church, Elder Guy Hunt officiating, with Burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Cason died Saturday, March 20, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Morgan County to Irvin Calvin and Yettie Ruth Copeland Wilkinson. She was a nurse and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Early Zion Cason; one son, Trenece Cason; and one sister, Freda Lee.
Survivors include three sons, Stanley Cason, Allen Cason and Alfred Cason, all of Baileyton; three daughters, Carolyn Strong and Peggy (David) Coppett, both of Baileyton, and Frances (Donald) Cooper of Arab; six brothers, Gordon Wilkinson, William Wilkinson and Jimmy Wilkinson, all of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; Herman Wilkinson of Atlanta; Leroy Wilkinson of Dayton, Ohio; and Charlie Wilkinson of Dora; two sisters, Glenda Williams and Linda Faulkner, both of Ethridge, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren, Dale Strong, Travis York, Keith Allen, Justin McKleroy, Shawn Allen, Jonathon McKleroy, Amy Cason, Timothy Cason, Crystal Cason, Candie Cason and Jordan Coppett.

Mr. Cornelius died Sunday, March 21, at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. He was born Oct. 14, 1934, in Cullman County to Leslie C. and Ora Bell McIntosh Cornelius. He was a medical nurse for Carraway Methodist Medical Center. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Terry Wayne Cornelius; a grandson, Erick Cornelius; and a brother, James Cornelius.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Sizemore Cornelius of Holly Pond; three sons, Winford (Lisa) Cornelius of Arlington, Texas, Jason Cornelius and Ronald (Susan) Cornelius of Holly Pond; three brothers, Ezell (Jean) Cornelius of Birmingham, Larry (Linda) Cornelius and Billy Cornelius of Hanceville; two sisters, Ressie (Hays) Hill of Holly Pond and Nelda (Don) Chambers of Cullman; and seven grandchildren, Nathan Cornelius, Wesley Cornelius, Holly Cornelius, Scotty Cornelius, Emily Cornelius, Candra Cornelius and Kaitlyn Cornelius.

Mrs. Briscoe died Sunday, March 21, at Carraway Medical Center. She was born March 31, 1925, in Cullman County to Lewis Phillip and Rossie Delilah Millis Miller. She was a homemaker, a member of Northside Baptist Church and worked as a volunteer in the hospital's Ladies Auxiliary for more than 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert J. Briscoe; four brothers, Lewis Miller, James Miller, Basil Miller and Gordon Miller; and a sister, Pauline Hollis.
Survivors include two sons, Jerald Briscoe and the Rev. Derald (Patty) Briscoe, both of Cullman; a daughter, Deborah Ann (David) Mathews of Montgomery; two sisters, Savannah Adlene Miller and Lou Dean Proctor, both of Cullman; a granddaughter, Deidra (Anthony) Smith of Vinemont; a grandson, Derrick (Penny) Briscoe of New Market; and four great-grandchildren, Dustin Ford, Logan Smith, Becca and Justin Briscoe.

Jerry Wayne Butts

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Burgess; two sons, Jimmy (Dean) Woodard and Neal (Karen) Woodard; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Woodard Densmore; three sisters, Vila Tyree, Christine Camp and Audrey Strickland; two brothers, Nathan Parris and Bobby Parris; eight grandchildren, Terry (Susan) Burgess, Jan (Bruce) Tidwell, Regena (Jerome) Newton, Mark (Jamie) Woodard, Robyn (John) Kuhlmeyer, Chann Woodard, Ryan Woodard and Trystan Woodard; and eight great-grandchildren, Joshua Burgess, Ashley Burgess, Tyler Newton, Seth Newton, Justin Kuhlmeyer, Dexter Woodard, Jessie Woodard and David Tidwell.

John L. LaRue
Funeral services for John L. LaRue, 63, of Arab will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Gober Funeral Chapel, Dempsey Rowland and James Weaver officiating, with Burial in Arab Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. LaRue died Sunday, March 21, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born in Guntersville on Feb. 26, 1941, to J.H. and Cathrine Rainwater LaRue. He was a truck driver for Cullman Wal-Mart Distribution.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Adams LaRue; a son, Dowling LaRue; a daughter, Darlene Smith, all of Arab; three sisters, Carolyn Jarrett of Arab, Nita Chastain of Albertville and Ginny Charvez of Guntersville; and six grandchildren, Brandon LaRue, Nicholas Marion, Derrick Marion, Dalton Smith, Megan Hipp and Gabriel Smith.
Pallbearers will be Fred Montgomery, Danny Morgan, David Bulter, Jackie Mann, Danny Davis, Don Fortner, Bruce Brock and Richard Billingsley.
Honorary pallbearers will be the truck drivers of Cullman Wal-Mart Distribution.
