Wideman

WINTERBORO

Services for Sarah Louise Wideman, 66, of Winterboro will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Usrey Funeral Home Chapel in Talladega. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 tonight.

Mrs. Wideman died Tuesday at Baptist Montclair Medical Center in Birmingham.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Wideman; a daughter, Diane Fitzpatrick of Anniston; three sons, Billy Joe Wideman, Danny Wideman and Steve Wideman, all of Talladega; a sister, Lavada Waley of Alabaster; a brother, Junior Lucas of Bessemer; her father, Leonard Lucas of Pelham; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be members of the Talladega Rescue Squad.

Mrs. Wideman, a Shelby County native, had lived in Talladega most of her life. She was a member of Plainview Baptist Church.

Williams

Services for John Williams, 71, of Anniston will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Williams died Tuesday at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Brown

OHATCHEE

Services for Samuel Paul Brown, 76, of Ohatchee will be today at 2 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Snow officiating. Burial will be in Anniston Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Brown died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Danny and Anita Brown of Marietta, Ga., and Anthony and Jeannie Brown of Ohatchee; a daughter and her husband, Donna and David Battson of Roswell, Ga.; two sisters, Nancy Whitman of Anniston and Clennis Swafford of Pell City; five grandchildren, Misty Brown, Julie Brown, Janee’ Brown, Scott Brown and Brooke Battson; and a great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Mike Brown, Kevin Brown, Ronnie Whitman, Pat Brown, Benjy Buckelew and Scott Brown.

Mr. Brown retired from Blue Mountain Industries.

Chatman

Services for Sammy Chatman, 44, of Anniston will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Carver Community Center in Anniston with Rev. Billy Stringer officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery with Anniston Funeral Service in charge. The body will be at the center an hour prior to services.

Mr. Chatman died Friday at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include five sisters, Sheila Chatman and Renay Nations, both of Douglasville, Ga., and Frances Young, Jean Young and Amanda Young, all of Anniston; and four brothers, Roary Carr of Douglasville, and Isaiah Young, Claude Young and Albert Young, all of Anniston.

Pallbearers will be members of the Carver Center staff.

Mr. Chatman, a lifelong Anniston resident, was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He retired from Cobb Elementary lunchroom and volunteered at Carver Community Center.

Dunson

Services for John L. Dunson, 82, of Anniston will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Dunson died Wednesday at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Groce

TALLADEGA

Services for Edward Groce, 56, of Talladega will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Union Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Samuel Turner officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary of Talladega in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to services.

Mr. Groce died Thursday at his home.

Survivors include two daughters, Cherlyn Hunley of Titusville, Fla., and Renita Ware of Anniston; two sons, Edward Groce Jr. of Wichita, Kan., and Stephen Groce of Kentucky; his father, Thomas Groce of Munford; three sisters, Gwenoble Parmer and Mary Joyce Rowland, both of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gary Ann Groce of Talladega; a brother, Kimmeth Groce of Buffalo; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Nathaniel Groce, Michael Groce, Willie Turner, Daniel Thomas, Christopher Thomas and Demetrick Thomas.

Mr. Groce was a member of Union Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Alice Turner Groce; two sisters, and a brother.

Hernandez

ROANOKE

Services for Susan Hernandez, 53, of Roanoke will be announced by Quattlebaum Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hernandez died Tuesday at her home.

Johnson

CEDAR BLUFF

Graveside services for Adron Dowdy Johnson, 78, of Cedar Bluff will be Friday at noon at Cherokee Memory Gardens with Rev. Leon Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at Perry Funeral Home in Centre 6-8 tonight and Friday until service time.

Mr. Johnson died Tuesday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Hope Nicholson Johnson; a son and his wife, Gary and Deborah Johnson of Locust Grove, Va.; a daughter and her husband, Retha and Dickey Maynard of Hazel Green; a brother, Ernest Johnson of Fulton, Miss.; three sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Fulton, Gladder Mills of Golden, Miss., and Etoye Waddle of Zion, Ill.; three grandchildren, Stephany Edgemon Smith, Nathan Morgan Johnson and Kristin Johnson Payne; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Johnson, Danny Smith, Terry Tallent, John Fortenberry, R.L. Shaw and George Webster. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad.

Mr. Johnson, a Itawamba, Miss. native, retired from the military after serving in World War II and Korea, and from General Electric. He was a lifetime member of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad.

The family will accept flowers, or contributions may be made to the Cherokee County Rescue Squad.

Morgan

HUNTSVILLE

Services for John Olen Morgan, 73, of Huntsville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with Fred E. Webster officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, Inc. in Huntsville Friday 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Morgan died Tuesday.

Survivors include his wife, Sun Morgan; two sons, John O. Morgan Jr. of Montgomery and Billy Morgan of Scottsboro; a sister, Jewel M. Anderson of Huntsville; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Morgan, a Talladega native, retired as a Chief Warrant Officer from AMCCOM, Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., and was inducted in the Army Ordnance Hall of Fame in May 1995. During his 36-year military career, he received many awards including the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal (IOLC), Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC) and Army Commendation Medal (2OLC). He was a Korean War and Vietname War veteran.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hope Lodge in Birmingham, c/o American Cancer Society.

Murphree

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla.

Graveside services for Gail S. Murphree, 77, of Port St. John, Fla., formerly of Anniston, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forestlawn Gardens with Dr. Roy T. Sublette officiating. The family will receive friends at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary & Crematory Friday 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Murphree died Friday in Florida.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, David G. and Ann Garner Murphree of Port St. John, Fla., and Edward A. and Sherry Sublette Murphree of Midland, Mich.; four grandchildren, Kevin Murphree, Tiffany Murphree, Mark Murphree and Melissa Murphree; and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Murphree, Edward Murphree, Kevin Murphree and Mark Murphree.

Mrs. Murphree, a Philadelphia native, had lived in Calhoun County almost 50 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church Saks and later attended Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lenlock. She worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Atlanta and retired from Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center as the night supervisor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Donald Murphree; and her parents, George and Clara Schermerhorn.

Roberts

GROVES, Texas

Services for Katherine H. Roberts, 87, of Groves, Texas, formerly of Talladega, will be Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Talladega with Rev. Robert Blackwell officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall at the church two hours prior to services. Broussard’s Mortuary of Nederland, Texas, handled arrangements.

Mrs. Roberts died Saturday at Christus St. Mary’s Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas.

Survivors include three daughters, Kate Noble Roberts Powell of Virginia, Jennifer Suzanne Roberts Fairchild of Groves, and Jean Middleton Roberts Tate of Talladega; three sons, Edward H. Roberts Jr. and David Hall Roberts, MD, both of Talladega, and Duncan MacGlaughin Roberts of Tuscaloosa; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Roberts, a Birmingham native, had lived in Groves the past five years. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a classical music DJ in Texas for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward H. Roberts; her parents, Louis Wells Hall and Katherine Burt Forney; and a granddaughter, Michelle Powell.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Katherine Roberts Fund for Animals, P.O. Box 765, Groves, Texas 77619, or to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Talladega.
