Ames

DETROIT

Services for Robert Lee “Bob” Ames, 84, of Detroit were held Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit.

Mr. Ames died Feb. 16 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Ames of Detroit; a daughter, Audrey Ames Turner of Anniston; two grandchildren, Louie Turner III and Alicia D. Turner and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

Mr. Ames was retired from General Motors in Detroit. He was preceded in death by his mother, Parlee Longmire Ames-Crow; his father, Jim Ames; a sister, Rosie Mae Grimes; and two brothers, John Lee McCarty and William “D.D.” Ames.

Bailey

Services for Lugertha Hardie Bailey, 84, of Anniston will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mars Hill Baptist Church on West Sixth Street with Rev. George Bates officiating. Burial will be at Eden Hills Cemetery with Anniston Funeral Service in charge. The body will be at the church one hour prior to services.

Mrs. Bailey died Tuesday at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Griggs of Detroit and Willie Nell Bailey Price of Anniston; a son, George Bailey of Detroit; two sisters, Inez Smiley and Lessie Talley, both of Talladega; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Masonic lodge brothers. Honorary pallbearers Ricky Tyson, Anthony Oliver, Gregory Roberts, Ben Chelsey, Dave Chelsey and Fred Chelsey.

A native of Talladega County, Mrs. Bailey lived most of her life in Anniston. She was the oldest member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and a member of Rebecca Chapter 24 Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of Snow Creek District Association.

Services for Willis Brown, 76, of Anniston will be announced by Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory.

Mr. Brown died Sunday at Regional Medical Center.

Clay

HEFLIN

Services for Lorena Blair Clay, 79, of Heflin will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at East Heflin Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6-9 tonight at Dryden Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clay died Sunday at Beverly Health Care of Oxford.

Complete arrangements will be announced by Dryden Funeral Home.

Harper

MOBILE

Graveside services for Lamar N. Harper, 83, of Mobile will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dogwood Trail Cemetery in Oxford. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory.

Mr. Harper, who was formerly of Anniston, died Sunday in Mobile.

Ragland

ALEXANDRIA

Services for Mildred Ventress Ragland, 86, of Alexandria will be today at 11 a.m. at Alexandria Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Davis officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Collinsville Cemetery with Collinsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ragland died Friday at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include her husband, Dwight L. Ragland of Alexandria; two daughters, Lillian Jo Ragland of Alexandria and Rebecca Cwikowski of Florida; two sons-in-law, Earl Phillips and Raymond Cwikowski; two grandchildren, John Phillip Battles II and Kenneth V. Battles; seven nephews; three nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Ventress, William Ellis, Tom A. Ventress III, Joe Eldridge, John Eldridge, David Eldridge, Eldred Wade and Don Sprayberry.

Mrs. Ragland was a native of Collinsville who had lived in Alexandria since 1951. She worked at DeKalb County health department and was secretary of Alexandria School for 24 years. A member of the Variosa Club and Alexandria Baptist Church, she taught the Dorcas Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas A. Ventress and Virginia A. Petty Ventress; four brothers, Paul Ventress, T.A. Ventress Jr., Hugh Ventress and Frank Ventress; two sisters, Mabel V. Ellis and Elizabeth V. Eldridge; and a son-in-law, Phil Battles.

Scoggins

Graveside services for Mary Wylene Scoggins, 73, of Anniston will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Bud Putnam officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Chapel Hill Funeral Home.

Mrs. Scoggins died Sunday at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters, Jo Ann Humphries and Peggy Pointer, both of Anniston; a son, Wayne Scoggins of Whitesboro, Texas; a sister, Nessie Morgan of Ohatchee; two brothers, Kenneth Sullivan and Robert Sullivan, both of Ohatchee; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Scoggins was born in Georgia but lived in Calhoun County most of her life. She was of the Baptist faith.

Thompson

ROYAL OAK, Mich.

Services for John W. Thompson, 66, of Royal Oak, Mich. will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be at Cedar Creek Baptist Cemetery with Gray Brown Service-Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be 5-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson died Friday at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Mr. Thompson was formerly of Heflin.

Wheeler

HEFLIN

Services for Eugene Wheeler, 69, of Heflin will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dryden Funeral Home with Revs. Johnny McDaniel and Chris Pappas officiating. Burial will be at Heflin City Cemetery.

Mr. Wheeler died Saturday at his residence.

Survivors include a wife, Wilma Wheeler of Heflin; a daughter, Carol Jean Trent of South Boston, Va.; two sons, Mark S. Wheeler of Mt. Meigs and Michael E. “Mickey” Wheeler of Bland, Va.; a brother, Ralph Wheeler of Sparr, Fla.; and a stepdaughter, Lynda Joy Ditman of Rome, N.Y.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Benefield, James Durham, Dennis Green, Emmett Owen, Milton Pitts and Stan Turner.

Mr. Wheeler was a native of Cleburne County and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of East Alabama, 1302 Noble. St., Anniston, AL 36201.

Williams

TALLADEGA

Services for Bessie Lenora Williams, 83, of Talladega will be today at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church with Revs. Lowell Ledbetter and Ed Williams officiating. Burial will be at Pine Hill Memorial Park with Usrey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams died Saturday at her residence.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Odom of Fultondale and Elizabeth Wood of Cullman; a son, Rev. Edwin Williams of Mt. Olive; four sisters, Margaret Crawford of Millbrook, Grace Osmer of Greensboro, Carolyn Ingram of Pensacola, Fla. and Emma Nell Crocker of Shelby; two brothers, Olin Davis of Selma and Adolph Davis of Linden; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Billy Ray Davis, Tim Smith, Chad Crawford, Jimmy Ray Davis, Terry Williams and Bobby Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Dewey Crocker, Mike Osmer, Morris Ingram, Brooks Davis, Carl Davis and deacons of Central Baptist Church.

A native of Moundville, Mrs. Williams had lived in Talladega since 1957. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and was retired from the Talladega County engineering department.

Bryan

JACKSONVILLE

Graveside services for Ruby Endy Carpenter Bryan, 90, of Jacksonville will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Amy Raser officiating and K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in charge. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bryan died Tuesday at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include a son and his wife, William “Billy” Baxter and Billie Bryan of Jacksonville; a sister, Bertie Carpenter Cardone of Junction City, Kan.; a grandchild, Melissa Dickinson; a great-grandchild, Peyton Dickinson; and a caregiver, Inez McDaniel of Jacksonville.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Walker, Jerry Crow, Chris Morris, Patrick Morris, Rick Morris and Fred Connell. Honorary pallbearers will be The Chicken Club.

Mrs. Bryan was a longtime resident of Calhoun County and a member of Four Mile United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. P.E. Bryan.
