Owen

JACKSONVILLE
Ashley Nicole Owen had just left school on Friday when her car left the road and stuck a tree on Possum Trot Road. She had her cap and gown with her and had just picked up her prom pictures.

The 17-year-old Piedmont high school senior died at the scene.

The Alabama State Trooper’s are still investigating the accident. Trooper Brent Thomas said wet roads could have been a contributing factor.

“She had prom last week,” her mother, Teresa Owen, said. “So we went to see her with her date there. It was her senior prom and she was very happy … she was looking forward to going to college this fall.”

Miss Owen was going to attend Gadsden State Community College and later planned to go to Jacksonville State University in hopes of becoming a kindergarten teacher, her mother said.

“She was making plans and was always talking about her senior trip to Florida she was going to go on this summer and college this fall,” Mrs. Owen said. “It’s senseless, her dying in this accident. June 29 is her birthday and that day will be very hard for us. So will graduation day.”

The family had just moved from Piedmont to Pleasant Valley but Miss Owen had continued to attend Piedmont High School.

Her mother described Miss Owen as a quiet girl, who loved talking to friends and going to church.

She often went to church with her family and joined the youth group as much as she could, her mother said.

Her daughter also loved going to school, Mrs. Owen said. Her favorite class was home economics, but she loved all her classes and teachers, she added.

“She had a lot of respect for her teachers,” she said. “She loved her school so much that when we moved she refused to change schools and the schools OK’d it if she drove herself. There just wasn’t anyone she didn’t love.”

Her mother also remembered her daughter’s beautiful singing voice, which she was shy to share with most people.

“She could just touch you with her singing,” Mrs. Owen said. “I was always trying to encourage her to sing in church.”

Miss Owen took choir in school. and also was a cheerleader her freshman year.

“You couldn’t ask for a better daughter,” her mother said.

Piedmont High School Assistant Principal Larry Wayne Ball said her death will be very hard for the students and staff to accept, including himself.

“She was in my office that day just before leaving school to pick up her prom pictures,” Ball said. “Just a few minutes before she died.”

Having known Miss Owen since she was in elementary school, Ball said he remembers her as a caring, outgoing person who enjoyed life.

He said the school would probably have a moment of silence for her today.

Services for Miss Owen will be today at 2 p.m. at K. L. Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Rickey Doyal, Bryan Watts and Michael Cox officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents, Tim and Teresa Barnes Owen of Pleasant Valley; and a brother, Zachary James Owen of Pleasant Valley; a grandmother, Margie Barnes of Piedmont; and 12 cousins.

Miss Owen was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. She was proceeded in death by a sister, Brittney Lanatte Owen; and grandparents, Charlie F. Barnes, and James B. and Kathleen Owen.

The senior class of Piedmont High School will be honorary pallbearers.
