BETTIE FAYE CARDEN

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Bettie Faye Carden, 64, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Midway Memory Gardens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Sims officiating. Burial will be in Midway Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Carden died June 2 at Talladega Health Care. She was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County and was a Baptist by faith. She was a retired caregiver. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sandra Faye Hurst and Barbara Ann Hurst, and her father, Charlie Smelley.

She is survived by daughters, Rhonda Alford of Warm Springs, Ga., and Deborah Wideman of Alpine; son, Frankie Hurst Jr. of Talladega; her mother, Sadie Stone of Talladega; sister, Mae Nix of Clanton; brothers, Ronnie Stone and Rickey Stone of Talladega; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six nieces; and five nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ray Nix, Mike Nix, Greg Crabtree, Mike Crabtree, Randy Crabtree, Kevin Nelson, Kevin Hurst and Todd Hurst.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Nelson, Stanley Ellis and Ray Chandler.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Midway Memory Gardens Funeral Home will direct the service.

PEGGY EMOGENE BRAGG

TARRANT — Funeral service for Peggy Emogene (Hess) Bragg, 68, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial chapel in Trussville with the Rev. Walt Hedstrom, Dr. V.O. Agan, Alvin Hodge and the Rev. John Burroughs officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bragg died June 2. She was a member of Tarrant Bible Methodist Church. Along with her faithful service as pastor's wife, she served as the C.M.B. superintendent for the Bible Methodist Connection of Churches for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fannie Claude Hess and John Alton Hess.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Gerald J. Bragg; daughters, Aneita Burroughs, Carol Bragg and Sharon Hamby; son, Steve Bragg; sister, Honey Horton; brother, Dewey Hess; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Bible Methodist Christian School, 1355 Chula Vista Drive, Pell City, Ala., 35125.

Jefferson Memorial in Trussville will direct the service.

JIMMIE McELDERRY

TALLADEGA — Jimmie McElderry, 70, of 613 Broadway Ave., died June 2 at Clay County Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.

JULIA E. SAFFOLD

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Julia E. Saffold, 90, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North chapel with the Rev. Rodney Barrand officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Saffold died June 1 at Sylacauga Health Care. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Saffold, and sister, Muriel Keller. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Sylacauga.

She is survived by a son, James L. Saffold of Hollins; daughters, Carolyn Barrand and Patricia Hall of Sylacauga; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

ROBERT LEE CHAPPELL
TALLADEGA — Sylacauga native and longtime Talladega resident Robert Lee (Lee Roy) Chappell, 91, died June 4 at Talladega Health Care Center following complications from a broken hip.
Graveside service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Revs. James Woodin and Bob Blackwell officiating.
Mr. Chappell was born Feb. 9, 1912, in Gantt’s Quarry near Sylacauga to Oliver and Ida Chappell.
He married Anne Louise Caudle in 1933, and they moved to Talladega in 1935.
He played baseball for 15 years with the Bemiston Cats of the old Southeastern League, and was a member of many all star teams, including the Alabama All Star team and the National All Star Semi-Pro squad in 1943.
He devoted much of his life to youth baseball, and the Pinto League baseball field at Ben E. Bruner Memorial Sports Complex bears his name.
He had owned Lee Chappell’s Grocery store on the Allison Mill Road in Talladega since 1945. He became popular with the children who visited the store.
“He loved kids,” said lifelong friend Allen Brown, “and they all loved him. He just had a way with them. When they grew up and had kids, they would bring them into the store to see him. Everybody just loved him. He was the nicest guy you’ve ever seen.”
After his first wife died, he married Alpha Bolding.
Chappell was known for riding his bicycle all over the county. On his 70th birthday, he rode it to LaGrange, Ga., to visit his brother.
Mr. Chappell was Baptist by faith and served as director of the children and adult choirs at Ridgeview Baptist Church for more than 21 years.
He was named Man of the Year by Talladega Creek Baptist Church in 1987, and was chosen as a “Home Town Hero” by a Birmingham TV station in 1994.
“He always had something nice to say about everybody, and I never left that store in the last 15 years that he didn’t tell me he loved me,” said good friend and hunting buddy Scotty Bishop.
Mr. Chappell was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver B. and Ida B. Chappell; his wives, Anne Louise Chappell and Alpha B. Chappell; five brothers, Oliver B. Chappell Jr., John H. Chappell, Marvin E. Chappell, Esmond Sylvester Chappell and Donald Chappell; and a sister, Anita Jean Brown.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda Gail Chappell Rodgers, and son-in-law Edward Neal Rodgers of Talladega; a grandson, Ronald Neal Rodgers and wife Renae of Talladega; a granddaughter, Leigh Ann Keith and husband Charles Keith Jr. of Maylene; a brother, Virgil Chappell of Talladega; a sister; Annie Mae King of Sylacauga; four great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Bernadette Walton and husband Johnny Walton and Gail Hall; a stepson, Larry Bolding and wife Lisa Bolding of Chelsea; and six stepgrandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family will accept flowers or donations to the Association for Retarded Citizens.
Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

ROSIE LEE JENKINS CURRY
TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Rosie Lee Jenkins Curry, 69, of 605 Avenue H, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at DeForest Chapel on the Talladega College campus with the Rev. Jerry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Lawler Cemetery.
Mrs. Curry died June 2 at her residence.
She is survived by daughters, Brenda Seals of Sylacauga, Earlene Reynolds of Lithonia, Ga., Mary Rivers, Teresa Davis and Valerie Spencer of Talladega; sons, William Frank Curry Jr., Gary Wayne Curry and Stanley Curry of Talladega; sisters, Sylvia Wilson, Shirdena Mostella and Mamie Blair of Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Earl Twymon of Wickliffe, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.
The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.
Sims Funeral Service will direct the service.

JIMMIE LEWIS McELDERRY
TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Jimmie Lewis McElderry, 70, of 425 19th St., will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hall Grove Baptist Church in Munford with Perry Dates and Rickey McKinney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. McElderry died June 2 at Clay County Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Curry; his parents, Will and Mary Alice Curry McElderry; and a son, William McElderry. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from Dec. 9, 1952, until Oct. 22, 1957, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was employed by Mason's Welding Company as a welder, was a brick mason, a member of Hall Grove Baptist Church and a graduate of Hillside Elementary School in Munford.
He is survived by daughters, Erica Garrett and Yolanda Enoch of Talladega and Pier Angela Curry of Lincoln; sons, Tony McElderry and Jimmy McElderry of Talladega and Michael Curry of Munford; sisters, Evelyn Mosley and Juliette McElderry of Munford and Estella Turner of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, Arthur McElderry of Munford; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Don Swain, Nakia Swain, Tony Curry, DeAngelo McElderry, Tavaris Curry and Timothy Curry.
The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.
Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

BESSIE LOVE ELDER
ATLANTA, Ga. — Funeral service for Bessie Love Elder, 72, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Elder died June 2 at her residence. She was preceded in death by a son, Clarence G. Elder.
She is survived by daughters, Linda E. Elder of Atlanta, Ga., Sonya E. Franklin of Panama City, Fla., and Torra Y. Elder of Powder Springs, Ga.; sons, Robert Elder and Billy Elder of Anniston, Ocie J. Elder of Boston, Mass., and Barry W. Elder of Anniston; sisters, Emma Goodson of Anniston, Leslie M. Dower of Baltimore, Md., Pearlie Briskett of Wetumpka and Betty J. Young of Anniston; brother, Ocie Murphy of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Ervin Funeral Home will direct the service.

TALLADEGA — Alfonza Henderson, 73, of 4200 Jackson Trace Road, died June 5 at his residence.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.

ESTELLE M. HOLLEY
SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Estelle M. Holley, 73, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Bolton officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Holley died June 2 at Baptist Medical Center Montclair.
She is survived by son, Terrell Milliner of Anaheim, Calif.; daughters, Bonnie Milliner of Alexander City and JoAnn Milliner of Sylacauga; brothers, Carl Smith of Sylacauga and Charles Smith of South Carolina; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Friends of the family and family will serve as pallbearers.
Madden's Funeral Service will direct the service.

SARA NELL HOSMER
CHILDERSBURG — Funeral service for Sara Nell Hosmer, 75, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Childersburg with the Rev. John Beck officiating. Burial will be in Greenhill Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Hosmer died June 4 at Coosa Valley BMC.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Hosmer of Childersburg; son, Michael V. Hosmer and wife Karen of Muscotine, Iowa; daughter, Debbie Ezekiel and husband Randy of Sylacauga; brothers, Tommy Gould of Alexander City, Don Gould of Columbiana, Travis Gould of Guin and James McMillian of Columbiana; sisters, Sandra Benton of Columbiana, Doylene Robinson of Jasper, Shirley Furline of Calera and Doris Sharbutt of Marion Junction; and five grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 2 until 3 p.m. Friday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Donahoo, Fred Jones, Donald Hill, Steve Ezekiel, Jeremy Daughtry and Phillip Black.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church in Childersburg.

CLARK Jones JR.
GOODWATER — Funeral service for Clark Jones Jr., 55, of 194 Chapman Road, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Madden's Funeral Service chapel in Sylacauga with the Rev. Kirkland officiating. Burial will be in Hollins Cemetery.
Mr. Jones died May 31 at his residence.
He is survived by sons, Clark Jones III of Hollins, Edward McGregor of Sylacauga and Dennis Cook of Childersburg; daughters, Flesha Gilder of Sylacauga, Mildred Jones of Sylacauga and Anglea Jones of Birmingham; brothers, Lloyd Odem and Charlie Lee Odem of New Orleans, La.; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Caldwell, Donald Caldwell, Eddie Caldwell, Greg Powell, Jerry Odum, Jimmy Odum and Frederick Griffin.
Madden's Funeral Service will direct the service.

WILLIAM H. SHEARS
JAMAICA, N.Y. — Funeral service for William H. Shears, 87, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Ervin Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. P.Q. English officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery.
Mr. Shears died June 1.
He is survived by his wife, Lula Shears of Anniston; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Ervin Funeral Home will direct the service.

RUBY MITCHELL SMITH
ASHLAND — Funeral service for Ruby Mitchell Smith, 73, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home chapel in Ashland with James Bolin and Benny Moore officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Springs Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith died June 3 at Clay County Hospital. She was a native of Arkansas but had lived most of her life in Clay County. She had been employed by Riley's Poultry Company and was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Ann Greenwood of Williamsburg, Va., and Kathy Finch of Ashland; sons, Clarence Edward Moon of Talladega and W.L. Moon of Ashland; sisters, Lillian Stewart, Emma Jean Lambert, Louise Mitchell, Earline Moore and Patsy Wilt of Ashland; brothers, Leon Mitchell and Franklin Mitchell of Ashland; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home until service time.
Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland will direct the service.

ROSIE L. THOMPSON
CHILDERSBURG — Funeral service for Rosie L. Thompson, 75, of 9128 Grist Mill Road, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kingston Baptist Church in Alpine with the Rev. Roger Holtzclaw officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Thompson died May 26 at University Hospital in Birmingham. She was a lifelong resident of Talladega County. She confessed to Christ at an early age and joined the Kingston Baptist Church in Alpine. She was preceded in death by her mother, Artelia G. Swain; father, T.L. Swain Sr.; husband, John Henry Thompson; sisters, Lucille Calhoun and Georgia Ray Garrett; and a brother, Hozel Swain.
She is survived by one special niece, Sandra (San) Swain; and children, Demarcus Swain, Marchel Swain, Shandel Swain and Dai'Sean Garrett, all of Childersburg; sisters, Annie Canson, Katie Campbell, Bernice Beattie, Barbara Green, Carol Swain and Arieglean Washington of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers, Willie Swain of San Francisco, Calif., Roy Swain of Union City, Calif., and Joe Freeman Swain, T.L. Swain Jr. and Robert E. Swain of Childersburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers and flowerbearers.
Childersburg Mortuary Service will direct the service.

AUGUSTA HENRY TURNER
TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Augusta Henry Turner, 72, of 127 Honeysuckle Lane, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with Terry Bagley and Ronnie Beavers officiating. Burial will be in Lawson Cemetery.
Mr. Turner died June 1 at Estes Civic Center Rehabilitation Center in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. Turner and Gussie Heard Turner; two brothers, A.C. Turner and Howard Turner; and two sisters, Maggie Atchison and Joyce Turner. He was a member and deacon of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, was employed by Newberry Foundry and through Labor Local No. 559 in Birmingham.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Elizabeth Crim Turner of Talladega; daughters, Carolyn Turner Dickerson of Birmingham, Shenevelyn Turner Norwood of Talladega and Patricia Fuller of Talladega; son, Thomas Cook of Talladega; sisters, Ollie M. Vaughn of Cleveland, Ohio, and Willie E. Gaddis of Albion, Mich.; brother, John D. Turner of Talladega; four stepbrothers; three stepsisters; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Calvin Tuck, Leon Tuck, Bennett Tuck, Laddy Green and Calvin Taylor Jr.
The body may be viewed at the church for one hour before the service.
