MRS. WHITFIELD

FREDONIA -- Mrs. Doris Whitfield, 89, of Fredonia died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. CDT at Community Baptist Church in LaFayette with the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating. Burial will follow in Penton Church of God Cemetery.

Mrs. Whitfield is survived by five children, Winfred Weldon of Dearborn, Mich., Dwayne (Nancy) Whitfield of Green Bay, Wisc., Joyce (Walt) Hall of Sylvester, Ga., Charles (Donna) Whitfield of Doe Run, Ga., and Bobby Watkins of Fredonia; two daughters-in-law, Sara Kay Weldon of Lavonia, Mich., and Bertha Weldon Ivey of Dallas, Texas; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Born March 12, 1915 in Tallapoosa County, Mrs. Whitfield was a retired textile employee. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hoyt Weldon, Homer Watkins and James Whitfield; her son, Harold Weldon; her grandson, Randy Conners; her daughters-in-law, Nancy Nanette Weldon and Helene Whitfield; her brothers, James Bence and wife, Connie Blackston, Rayford Bence and wife Betty Foreman; and two sisters, Irene Smith and husband, Charlie Smith and Beanie Lauderdale and husband, Roy Lauderdale.

The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 23 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette.

MR. CLARK

HUGULEY -- Mr. Charlie Clark Jr., 77, of Huguley died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. Rusty Letson and Floyd Aikens officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Pauline Clark; four sons, Jimmy (Judy) Clark of Calhoun, Ga., Jeff Clark of Huguley, "Turtle" Allen Clark of Huguley and Robbie (Heather) Clark of Valley; two sisters, Doris Wood of Roanoke and Betty Toole of Valley; four brothers, Thomas F. Clark of Georgia, Barney Clark of Georgia, Joe Clark of Alabama and Larry Clark of Alabama; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Born May 24, 1928 in Alabama, Mr. Clark was the son of the late Eula Bell Whitlock Clark and Charlie Lindsey Clark. He had worked with WestPoint Stevens for 42 years. He loved watching the Braves, gardening and yard work. He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Clark, and his brother, Tony Clark.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 20 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

MRS. OLIVER

VALLEY -- Mrs. Mildred Oliver, 92, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 in a Florida nursing facility.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 21 at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with Dr. Jerome King officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Oliver is survived by one daughter, Peggy Oliver Bradley of Panama City Beach, Fla.; one grandson, Robert Keith Bradley of Pensacola, Fla.; a son-in-law, Walter H. Nolin of Panama City Beach; three sisters, Mary Stewart of Gainesville, Fla., Sarah Francis Hamrick of Pelham, Ala., and Iris Sylvene Benson of Pensacola; one brother, the Rev. Bernard (Doris) Fuller of Roanoke; two brothers-in-law, Lamar Hamrick of Pelham and Dovard Oliver of Shawmut.

The oldest of 12 children of Morgan and Lois Fuller, Mrs. Oliver was born on Aug. 31, 1911 in Langdale. She was an active member of Shawmut First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for 40 years. Mrs. Oliver loved people, especially young people she taught in Sunday school, flowers, books, singing and visiting the elderly and doing things for them, but above all, she loved her Lord and her church.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 20 at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and asks that contributions be made to Shawmut First Baptist Church Building Fund in Mrs. Oliver's name.

MRS. BERNSTEIN

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Mrs. Dorothy Spier Bernstein died July 21, 2004 following a brief illness in Palm Desert.

"Dot" was born in Montgomery, Ala., to Elsie and Willie Spier on March 6, 1931 and moved to West Point as a young child. She graduated from West Point High School in 1949. She attended the University of Alabama where she met her husband of 49 years, William E. Bernstein of Birmingham, Ala. Dot received her B.A. degree in education from the University of Massachusetts and was a physical education teacher in Chicopee, Mass. Her husband, Bill, preceded her in death four years ago.

Dot is survived by her three children and their spouses: William E. Bernstein Jr. of Lake Waccamaw, N.C., Jane Jarzabek of Westfield, Mass., and Leslie Bramwell-Smith of Petaluma, Calif.; three college-age grandchildren, Christopher Jarzabek, Laura Bernstein and Rachael Bernstein; and her brother, William Spier Jr. and his family of Charlotte, N.C.

She will always be remembered by her many friends from school, from the places that she and Bill lived during his military career and in Southern California, where they lived for 20 years.

Dot was buried Aug. 12 at Arlington National Cemetery next to her beloved husband, a career officer in the Air Force. A Celebration of Life will be held in Palm Desert this fall.

MRS. BOOTH

BEULAH -- Mrs. Mildred Y. Booth, 90, of Beulah died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at her residence.

Graveside services are scheduled Friday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. EDT at Fairfax Cemetery with the Rev. Henry E. Hulgan of Hapeville, Ga., officiating.

Mrs. Booth is survived by two sons, David (Sallie) Booth of Beulah and Bobby (Rebecca) Booth of Hurtsboro; four grandchildren, Paul (Linda) Booth of Beulah, Tamara Booth of Beulah, Daniel (Brandy) Booth of Beulah and Amy Booth of Beulah; and three great-grandchildren, Brana Booth, Brittnee Booth and Cole Booth.

Born Dec. 17, 1913 in Covington, Ky., Mrs. Booth was the daughter of the late Maude and Harry Shoemaker. She traveled the United States with her husband who served in the U.S. Army. She was a seamstress and an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Booth; her brothers, Woodrow and Melvin Shoemaker; and her sister, Elizabeth Pribble.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in her memory.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 19 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

MRS. GRAY

VALLEY -- Mrs. Joyce Gray, 74, of Valley died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at George H. Lanier Nursing Home.

Graveside services are scheduled Friday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Langdale Cemetery with Dr. Randy Williams officiating.

Mrs. Gray is survived by her daughter, Gail Heath of Auburn; her brother, Lynwood Wadkins of Valley; and a niece, Debbie (Larry) Boettcher of Marietta, Ga.

Born Aug. 16, 1930 in Langdale, Mrs. Gray was the dughter of the late Annie Joe Hamil Wadkins and Crayton Wadkins. She was a retired employee of WestPoint Pepperell's Fairview Mill. Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her husband, James Gray. She was a member of Valley First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in honor of Mrs. Gray.

MISS SMITH

VALLEY -- Miss Mary C. Smith, 52, of Valley died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Funeral services are scheduled Friday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Community Baptist Church in Valley with the Rev. David Core officiating and the Revs. Napoleon Darden, Corley Huguley and W.G. Wimberly assisting. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Valley.

Miss Smith is survived by four sisters, Annie (Cleveland) Sykes of Decatur, Ala., Annie (Clint) Stallworth of Lanett, Mary (Johnny) Weathers of Lanett and Virginia (Walter) Madry of Valley; two brothers, Clettes Smith of Brunswick, Ga., and Anaias Smith Jr. of Opelika; a special friend, John Trammell; a special cousin, Leona Dawkins; nine nieces and 20 nephews.

Mrs. Smith was born in Lee County on Dec. 25, 1951. She was a member of Community Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, Aug. 19 from 7 until 8 p.m. at Unity Mortuary in Valley.

The remains will lie in state Friday, Aug. 20 from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.

MRS. WILLIAMS

LaFAYETTE -- Mrs. Nellie Mae Williams, 90, of LaFayette died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 20 at Ozias Baptist Church in Camp Hill at 2 p.m. CDT with the Rev. O.C. Stiggers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Williams is survived by three daughters, Lelar Mae Williams and Joann (Charlie Will) Ross, both of LaFayette, and Nelene Bland of Miami, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Odie Jeanette Williams of Miami; six sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was a long-time member of Ozias Baptist Church.

BEULAH -- Funeral services are pending for Mrs. Mildred Yelton Booth, 90, of Beulah, who died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at her residence.

MR. CARTER

TUSKEGEE -- Mr. Winston DeRoyal Carter, 29, of Tuskegee died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 in Tuskegee.

Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at Wall Street A.M.E. Church in Tallassee, Ala., with the Rev. H.S. White officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Carter is survived by his mother, Alfreda Morris of Kingston, N.Y.; his father, Daniel D. Burney of LaFayette; two sons, Deontae' and Anthony of Tuskegee; five daughters, Tania, Janay, Sharonda, Tashauna and Kaitlyn of Tuskegee; one brother, Deontae Burney of Tuskegee; two sisters, Ashley Burney of Tuskegee and Alicia Stewart of Tallassee; and a special companion, Pam Purnell of Tuskegee.

Mr. Carter was born in Macon County Jan, 1, 1975.

MRS. GARRETT

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Mrs. Elaine Tucker Garrett, 81, of Chattanooga died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 in a Chattanooga hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled Friday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette. Burial will follow at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, William B. "Bill" Garrett Sr.; two sons, William B. "Bill" Garrett Jr. of Start, La., and Robert Tucker "Bob" Garrett of Chattanooga; one brother, James Tucker of LaFayette, two nephews, Jim Tucker of Columbia, S.C., and John Tucker of LaFayette; and one niece, Becky Swindal of Birmingham, Ala.

Born in LaFayette, Mrs. Garrett was the daughter of the late James Jefferson and Mamie Dodson Tucker. She had lived in Chattanooga most of her life. Mrs. Garrett was an active member of Brainerd Baptist Church and was retired from the Chattanooga Public School System.

The family will received friends Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Chattanooga.

Visitation will be held in LaFayette at Jeff Jones Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m.
