NEWSOM, Annie Laurie Mitchell, 87, died peacefully at John Knox Man or in Montgomery on June 9,2005. Funeral services will be held on Sun-day, June 19,2005 at 3:00 P.M. at Leak-Memory Chapel with Rev. Mike Sigler officiating. The family will receive friends at Leak-Memory prior to the service, from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Annie Laurie was married for 60 years to Joseph Douglas Newsom, Sr. also of Montgomery and is survived by two children: Diane Newsom Barnes of Hiram, Maine and Joseph Douglas Newsom, Jr. of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. She is also survived by a sister: Lorene Mitchell Boles of Montgomery; a brother Edward C. Mitchell of Albany, Georgia and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Brian Boles, George Boles, Jeff Clark, Christopher Mixon, Ed Mixon and Jason Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be the Keystone Sunday School Class of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the James M. Mitchell Family Foundation. SKELTON, Sharon Roberta Mobley

SKELTON, Sharon Roberta Mobley, 58, departed this life on Thursday, June 16, 2005 for her eternal home. She fought a courageous battle against ovarian cancer. Visitation will be at Leak Memory Funeral Home on Saturday, June 18, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Frazer Memorial UMC on Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Reed Wilbanks officiating the service and Leak Memory directing. Ms. Skelton was a native of Whigham, Georgia, and resident of Montgomery since 1968. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Interior Design in Architecture and had her own business, Sharon Skelton Interiors, since 1985. She was an active member of Frazer Memorial UMC, in the Adult Choir, Anchor Class and Lay Ministry. Cherishing her memories and life are two sons, Bryan Mobley Skelton (Keri) of Franklin, Tennessee, and Patrick Dean Skelton of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Taylor B. Skelton and Caleb B. Skelton of Franklin, Tennessee; one brother, Dr. Donald G. Mobley of Whigham, Georgia; two sisters, Ms. Carolyn M. Newell of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mrs. Rebecca M. Brock (Ervin) of Thomasville, Georgia; one niece, Kelly C. Newell of Atlanta, Georgia; one nephew, Scot Newell of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by parents Mr. and Mrs. Graham Mobley of Whigham, Georgia. Burial service will be held in Whigham, Georgia, at Woodlawn Cemetery (Highway 84) on Monday, June 20, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. (EST) at the family plot with Clark Funeral Home (Cairo, Georgia) directing. Visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, prior to the burial service. Active pallbearers will be Ervin Brock, Scot Newell, Roy Mulkey, Chris Mulkey, Paul Lewis and Ed Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be the entire Anchor Class, men and ladies. Floral contributions will be accepted or memorials to The Building Fund for Frazer Memorial UMC.

THOMPSON, Heidi Crispen

THOMPSON, Heidi Crispen, 44, of Jonesboro, Arkansas died suddenly Thursday, June 16th. Heidi grew up in Montgomery and moved to Arkansas in 1990. She served on the Jonesboro Police Department for the past fourteen years. Survivors include two sons, Bo and Richard Mitchell of Jonesboro, Arkansas; parents, Fred and Elsa Crispen of Montgomery; two sisters, Maureen Lynn (Bob) of Birmingham, AL, Chris Mitchell (Pete) of Wetumpka, AL; niece and nephews, Sara and David Lynn and Jason and Jeffrey Mitchell; and other loving friend, Michael Wiley. She was preceded in death by her brother, Freddie Crispen. Visitation will be from Leak-Memory Chapel, Tuesday, June 21st from 10:00-11:00 am. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 at Forrest Hills Cemetery in Snowden, AL. In lieu of flowers, her children request donations to the Heidi Thompson Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 4072, Jonesboro, Arkansas 72403.

J.D. Murfield

35 year resident of Montgomery
Memorial services for Col. J.D. Murfield USAF (ret) will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Southern Memorial Funeral Home, 3154 Highland Ave., Montgomery, Alabama.

Born March 27, 1923 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, he died at home Thursday, June 16, 2005 in Stockbridge, Georgia, after a month long illness.

A man for all seasons in the service of our country, he was a living chronicle of American history. J.D. graduated from high school in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, prior to flying over 200 missions in World War II as a B26 pilot. He completed Air Force Officer's training and married Betty Jane Norman in Montgomery in December of 1942. In 1956 he distinguished himself as the first Director of Finance for the newly formed Air force Academy in Denver, Colorado. He went on to complete both Command and Staff School and Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. Those assignments were followed by a tour of duty in Korea. He served at two different posts in the Strategic Air Command, firstly as a B-52 squadron commander during the Cuban Missile crisis; and then as Deputy Wing Commander for Operation Looking Glass at SAC headquarters at Offut Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. He was responsible for refueling operations in Guam during the Vietnam War. He obtained the promotional rank of Full Colonel and was heavily decorated. He served his last assignment of Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts prior to retirement. In the early 1970s he retired to Montgomery, Alabama with his wife, Betty, and youngest son, Mike. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Alcazar Shrine, Quiet Birdmen, Scottish Rite, Arrowhead Country Club, belonged to Dalraida United Methodist Church and Bible Group, etc.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Murfield; daughters, Janet (Paul) Lueck and Nancy (Steve) McCarthy; sons, Jay (Jan) Murfield, Dean (Liliana Mejia) Murfield, Jim Murfield, and Mike Murfield; sister Linda (Bill) Hamer; brother-in-law, Ray Scholl; grandchildren, Kelley Shannon, Shane Shannon, Aubrey Lueck, Jessica Murfield, Jennifer Murfield, Jac-queline Murfield, David Crook and, Stephanie Crook; and one great grandchild, Damian Crook; nephew, Charles Scholl; nieces, Sarah Scholl Crandell, Amy Hamer and Abby Hamer.

He was preceded in death by his mother Izetta; stepfather Ivan Helbig; father H.E. Murfield, and sister Patricia Scholl.

LEE, Mrs. Juanita

LEE, Mrs. Juanita, 80, a resident of Clayton, AL passed away Thursday, June 16, 2005 at her residence. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 24, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. from the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Louisville, AL. The Reverend Y. Z. Anglin, Pastor will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Caring Staff of Carter Funeral Home will direct all services. Mrs. Lee will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour.

ODOM, James Lester

ODOM, James Lester, age 65, a resident of Elmore, AL passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, June 18, 2005, after an extended illness with lung cancer. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 26, 2005 at 3:00 PM from Brookside Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Dopson and Rev. George Milam officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Memorial Gardens. Mr. Odom was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Frances Odom and a son, Jeffrey Lee Odom. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Trina M. and Joel C. Sharpe of Elmore, AL; one daughter-in-law, Melinda O. Milam and husband Rev. George Milam of Muscle Shoals, AL; six grandchildren, Joelle Sharpe, Kadie Sharpe and Joshua Sharpe all of Elmore, AL; Andrew Odom, Emily Odom and Katie Milam all of Muscle Schoals, AL; one sister, Marie Kiker of Lincoln, AL and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to New Horizons Church Childrens Ministries, P.O. Box 680661, Prattville, AL 36068. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, June 25, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. until 8;00 p,m.

SMITH, Carl Samuel

SMITH, Carl Samuel, 50, of Tallassee died June 18, 2005, in Birmingham. Funeral services will be Monday, June 20th, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the First Assembly of God Church in Tallassee, Reverend Travis Bittle will officiate and burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Survivors are: one sister, Becky (Roger) Miller, Tallassee; one brother, Ray (Tiffany) Smith, Montgomery; two nieces, Kelli (Kerry) Jenkins, Denver, CO, Averi Miller, Tallassee; a dear family friend, Vaughn Oswald, Montgomery. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ruthie Smith. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the First Assembly of God in Tallassee.

JORDAN, A. Ray, 69, a resident of Union Springs, died June 17, 2005 in a Montgomery hospital. Mr. Jordan was born in Pike County, Alabama on June 19, 1935 to Alter and Ethel Jordan. He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother Bobby Wyrosdick. He is survived by his wife Mae Dean Jordan; two sons and daughters-in-law Alvia (Buddy) and Sara Jordan, and Stanley and Karen Jordan all of Prattville; daughter Kimberly Prybys of Union Springs; sister Cynthia (James) Harrington of LaGrange, GA; eleven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 20, 2005 from Eastside Baptist Church at 11:00 am with Rev. Steve Bailey officiating, burial will follow in Perpetual Care Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie James Parker, Ellis Ingram, Mac Surles, Art Hancock, Tony Wood, Robert Meredith, Mike Dunn, Barry Culpepper. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Singleton, Robert Williams, Randolph Smith, Dewey Griswell, Oscar Delao, and Andrew Tolbert. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday, June 19, 2005.

COBB, Mrs. Kathleen Howell, 68, a resident of Luverne died Friday June 17, 2005. Funeral services will be 10 am Monday June 20, 2005 from the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Marler and Rev. Bobby Powell officiating. Interment will follow in the Good News Chapel Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Survivors include her husband, James W. " Pete " Cobb; three children, Debbie (Frankie) Christian of Brantley; Dale (Kelly) Cobb of Elba and Ronnie (Kathy) Cobb of Highland Home; seven grandchildren, Paul Christian of Brantley, Blake and Brady Cobb, both of Elba and Tommy, Brittany, Tiffany and Brandon Cobb, all of Highland Home; two great grandchildren, Ashlyn Christian of Brantley and Hannah Cobb of Highland Home; one sister, Mary H. Wright of Pensacola, FL. Active pallbearers will be Paul Christian, Tommy and Brandon Cobb, J.T. Price, Greg Howell and Bill Wright. COGDELL, Mr. James Black, Sr.

COGDELL, Mr. James Black, Sr., 75, died at his home in Luverne, AL. He was a native of Montgomery, AL but lived his retirement years at the family home in Luverne. He attended and received degrees from Huntingdon College and Duke University. He retired from the State of Alabama Department of Industrial Relations. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman and his love of the outdoors was known by all his friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Eleanor and Rexford Cogdell. He is survived by his sons, James Black Cogdell, Jr. of Millbrook, AL, Carl Eric Cogdell of Orlando, FL; their mother, Phyllis Kohler of Millbrook; his sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Oliver Steele of Iowa City, Iowa and their children; and a cousin, Duncan Black of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. He was a life-long Methodist and a member of the Luverne United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at the church on June 24, 2005 at 2pm. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

MARTINES, Mack, Tech Sgt USAF (Ret), 79, formerly of Montgomery, Al died Friday, June 10, 2005 after a long term illness at the VA Hospital in Biloxi, MS. A memorial service will be held July 14, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at the National Cemetery located in Biloxi, MS. He was born June 22, 1925 in Nacogdoches, TX. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Merle (Revels) Martines formerly of Brundidge, Al, 5 sons James Edge, Jr., Biloxi, MS, Michael Martines, Knoxville, TN, Johnny Martines (Kathy) Charleston, SC, Pete Martines, Montgomery, Al, Joe Martines, Biloxi, MS, 5 daughters, Peggy Campbell (William) Rockford, Iowa, Dianne Sequoia (John) Panama City, Fl, Dona Meyers, Buford, SC, Nell Clark, Chicago, IL, Arnell Mitchell, Bay City TX, 1 brother Jake Martines, Cushion, OK, 3 sisters Alma, Freddie, Bernice, Nacogdoches, TX, 23 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and Helen Gaillard ex-daughter-in-law and longtime family friend. He was preceded in death by his brother Johnny Martines, & sister Katie Harris. Mack began his career in 1943 where he first served in the Army's 80th Division, 317th Infantry. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 where he served in the Ardennes & Rhine Land Central Europe Campaign. He returned to duty in September 1946 in the USAF where he served in Germany, Europe, Okinawa, Moscow, Greenland, Alaska. He received medals for Good Conduct w/bronze loops, American Campaign Medal, Europe, Asiatic, Middle Eastern w/bronze service star, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense, Army Occupational w/four bronze oakleaf clusters, Career Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal. He served under the leadership of General Patton. He retired from USAF in 1964 in Montgomery, Al, where he then began a career in the Civil Service as a POL at Maxwell AFB and retired from there in 1981 and began traveling with his wife & son throughout the Carolina's and for a time working in the Christian Broadcasting Network in Ft. Mill, SC. After many years, he returned to Montgomery, Al and settled down with his family until he was moved to the VA Hospital in Biloxi, MS where he resided until his death. He will be greatly missed by his family and especially his grandchildren.

Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Bray was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys M. Johnson. She is survived by her children, Joe H. Grayson (Dorothy), James C. Grayson (Kate), Beverly Reese (William), Tracy Butts (Forrest) and Melissa Carr (Larry); six brothers and sisters, Elzora Peek, Royce Johnson (Gladys), Frank Johnson (Ann), Blanche Culpepper (Virgil), Robert Johnson (Janice) and Loyce Adkison (Bill); 11 grandchildren and special friends, Virginia Jones and Jerome Lawson. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 13th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Leak-Memory Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Leisa DeSimone; children, Heather Lammons (David); Hillary DeSimone; step-children, Tripp Bradley, Will Bradley (Bridgette), and Clay Bradley; parents, Ed & Mary DeSimone; sister, Paula Maria Morgan (Bryan); brothers, Ed DeSimone (Merry) & Stephen Strouf (Wahn); four grandchildren, Ashton, Ayden, Averi, and Corey; niece, Jennifer; nephews, Eddie & Steve. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery Cancer Center. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Howard H. Jones, Sr., sister, Floy Barganier (John), three children, Judy Creel(Billy), Jenny Phillips(Donny), and Howard Jones, Jr.(Kathy), grandchildren, Sherman, Jeff, Adam, Jill, Dabney, Jeremy, and Heather, great-grandchildren, Sarah Rae, Shelby, Baker, Dale, Katlyn, Jordan, Carol, Crystal, Natalie, Ally, Molly, Maggie, Zoie. Steve Housley and Don Brannon will be officiating the service. She is preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of the Eastern Meadows Church of Christ for many years. Pallbearers will be Sherman, Baker, and Adam Creel, Michael Bayer, Dabney and Jeremy Phillips. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Leak Memory Chapel.
