KATHLEEN SKINNER MINDLER

Kathleen Skinner Mindler, 64, of Clanton died Dec. 30, 2002. She was born in Walker County in 1938. She was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, John W. Mindler; one son, Thomas J. Mindler of Mobile; five daughters, Charlene Tremor of Navarre, Fla., Cora Mindler of Mobile, Rhonda White of Fairburn, Ga., Rebecca Higgins of Alabaster and Mary K. Gordon of Mobile; her mother, Sara Skinner of Bessemer; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.

Service was Jan. 3 at Charter Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald Vanderslice presiding. Burial followed in Concord Cemetery in Calera, Charter Funeral Home directing.

ISABELL SCOTT

Mother of seven

Isabell Scott, 88, of Jemison died Dec. 30, 2002, in Jemison.

She is survived by two daughters, Margie Lindsey of Jemison and Kathleen Gothard of Jemison; three step-daughters, Doris Payton of Caler, Frankie Collingsworth of Shelby and Pearline Simmons of Tennessee; two sons, Elisha Scott Jr. of Georgia and Charles William "Pee Wee" Scott of Calera; 20 grandchildren; and 56 great-grandchildren. Service was Jan. 3, 2003, at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Calera, William Short presiding. Burial was in Rock Springs Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

CHARLES E. SMITH

Harpersville resident

Charles E. Smith, 68, of Harpersville died Jan. 3, 2003, at Baptist Montclair Medical Center. He was a member of Arkwright Baptist Church and served in the United States Army.

He is survived by his daughter, Mona (Billy) Carden of Sylacauga; his sister, Bernice (John) Kidd of Harpersville; his brother, Arthur (Harrett) Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and his granddaughter, Timeka Baker of Sylacauga.

Service was Jan. 5 at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel, the Revs. William Rayfield and Zane Smith presiding. Burial followed in Harpersville Cemetery, Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel.

LEARDE SAILES SMITH

Jemison resident

Learde Sailes Smith, 56, of Jemison died Dec. 30, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Jemison, an employee of Alabama Plastic Containers Corporation of Calera and a member of the Saint James Highland Bible Church in Jemison.

She is survived by her children, Marion (Clarissa) Smith, Quinton Smith, Vera Smith and Kimberley (Derrick) Bryant; brothers and sisters, Jesse Sailes, Willie James (Mary) Sailes, Eugene Sailes, Joe Sailes, Wilma Williams, Ora (David) Wright and Joyce (Willie) McCray; and seven grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 3 at the Saint James Highland Bible Church in Jemison, Pastor Elbert Simon and the Rev. Johnny Tillis presiding. Burial was in Holley Grove Cemetery in Jemison, Westside Funeral Home directing.

MERLE EUGENE UPTON

Father of four

Merle Eugene Upton, 70, of South Burlington, Vt., died Dec. 27, 2002. He was born in Walker County in 1932.

He is survived by his wife, Jimmie Nell Upton of South Burlington, Vt.; his children, Pamela Jean Weber of South Burlington, Vt., Crystal Marie Davis of Canton, Ga., Merle Eugene Upton Jr. of and Michael Eugene Upton, both of Columbiana, nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother, Dave Upton of Birmingham. Graveside service was Dec. 29 at Williams Cemetery, the Rev. Bob Loveless presiding and Bolton-Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

ROBERT TIPTON COX

Briarwood Presbyterian Church member

Robert Tipton Cox, 55, died Feb. 28, 2003, in his Vestavia Hills home. He was employed by Square D/Schneider Electric as a senior sales engineer. He was a member a of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and had a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force and the Tennessee Air National Guard Reserve. He was also a member a the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Woodbadge for the Boy Scouts of America, Birmingham area council.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Cox of Norfolk, Va.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda Cox; two sons, Bryan Cox of Seattle, Wash., and Keith; his mother, Ora Lee Yerger; his brother, Stan Cox; his sister, Cheryl Sullivan of Knoxville, Tenn.; and his uncle, Dick Cox of Maryville, Tenn.

Service was March 3 at the church, Dr. Frank Barker Jr. presiding and Ridout's Southern Heritage directing.

ELIZABETH CLANCY FELTON

Birmingham resident

Elizabeth Clancy Felton, 67, of Birmingham died Feb. 21, 2003. She was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, a former employee of Baptist Medical Center Montclair and a member of Zion Star Baptist Church.a

She is survived by her sons, Colvin Clancy, Wilton McShan and Michael Felton; her mother, Johnnie Mae Clancy; three sisters, Bobbie Jo Rutledge, Quella Thomas and Bessie Harris; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Service was March 1 at Smith and Gaston Southside Chapel, Minister Joyce Burden presiding. Burial followed in Zion Memorial Gardens, Westside Funeral Home directing.

RUSSELL EDWARD HARKINS JR.

Retired from the U.S. Air Force

Russell Edward Harkins Jr., 70, of Montevallo died Feb. 28, 2003. He was retired from the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Harkins of Montevallo; one son, Russell (Roxann) Harkins III of Antioch, Tenn.; five daughters, Angela (Jerry) Hager and Stephanie (Fran) Viselli of Tuscaloosa, Marie (Ben) Nordyke of Florida, Tomi Sue (Wayne) Padgett of Indiana and Dawn (Shannon) Daniel of Wilton; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Shelby) Harkins of Pea Ridge and Lewy (Barbara) Harkins of Jemison; and a host of nieces and a nephew.

Service was March 3 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, Rockco's directing. Honorary pallbearers were the nurses and staff at Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Dr. Elliott and employees of Luco Trucking Company.

CLYDE AUSTIN HOLLINGSWORTH

Montevallo resident

Clyde Austin Hollingsworth, 84, of Montevallo died March 2, 2003, in Montevallo. He was retired as shipping foreman at Martin Marietta Corp. He was a member of Montevallo Baptist Church and a World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by son, Ernest Hollingsworth.

He is survived by his wife, Leota Hollingsworth of Montevallo; his daughter, Kathy (Eddie) Varnadore of Sylacauga; his daughter-in-law, June Hollingsworth of Northport; two sisters, Bert Dodson of Bessemer of Blanche Callahan of Slidell, La.; and four grandchildren, Shane Hollingsworth and Stacey (Lance) Johnson, both of Northport, Eric (Amanda) Varnadore of Auburn and Holly Varnadore of Sylacauga.

Service was March 4 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, the Revs. Ed Horsley and Bart Kingsley presiding. Burial was in Montevallo Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

MARY FAYE SMITH

Calera resident

Mary Faye Smith, 86, of Calera died Feb. 25, 2003, in Alabaster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius F. Smith, and two sons.

She is survived by four daughters, Aleine Rodgers of Jasper, Luvene (Stinson) Wallace of West Blocton, Bonnie (Basil) Cox of Jasper and Betty (Ross) Smith of Calera; two sons, Jimmy (Mayo) R. Smith of Alabaster and Varney (Connie) Smith of Clanton; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Feb. 28 at Union Springs Baptist Church in Randolph, Brother Sherrill Hillard presiding. Burial followed in Union Springs Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.
