Lumer E. Barkley

Mother of three

Lumer E. Barkley, 98, of Clanton died Nov. 19, 2003. She was born in Alabama in June 1908, the daughter of William A. and Della Bishop. She was a member of the Chestnut Creek Baptist Church in Chilton County.

She is survived by two sons, Shelton and Herbert Barkley, both of east Lawrence County; one daughter, Lucy Cleckler of Clanton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Nov. 21 at Orange Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin County, the Rev. Wendell Bennett presiding and Charter Funeral Home directing.

Rachel Tarver Jordan Bennett

Birmingham resident

Rachel Tarver Jordan Bennett, 95, of Birmingham died Nov. 13, 2003. She was a native of Barbour County, a former employee of the Birmingham Board of Education at Washington Elementary School and a member of the South Elyton Baptist Church, where she served in Sunday school, the Missionary Society and the Golden Age Ministry. She is survived by her son, Joel (Lorene) Jordan Sr.; her sister, Geraldine Foreman; her grandchildren, Joel Jordan Jr., Michael Jordan, Otis Jordan, Avaria (Gary) Cooper and Wyetta Jordan; and six great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 22 at the church, pastor Reginald Brown presiding. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery, Westside Funeral Home directing.

Robert L. Brantley

U.S. Army veteran

Robert L. Brantley, 69, of Wilsonville died Nov. 22, 2003, at his residence. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had retired from Kimberly Clark after 33 years.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Steven Brantley of Chelsea and Joseph Jason Brantley of Calera; two daughters, Lisa Denise Harrington and Teena Jo McCuller, both of Wilsonville; one sister, Mary Brantley of Wilsonville; and six granchildren.

Service was Nov. 24 at Curtis and Son Funeral Home's Childersburg Chapel, the Rev. Warren Wilder presiding. Burial followed in Wilsonville Cemetery, Curtis and Son directing.

Edith Stewart Capps

Grandmother of three

Edith Stewart Capps, 72, of McDonald's Chapel, Ala., died Nov. 17, 2003, in Alabaster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie E. Capps Sr.; her daughter, Sue Capps; and her son, Bobby E. Capps Jr.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Sheavon Capps Rhoads of Columbus, Miss.; one grandson, Ryan Capps of Alabaster; one great-granddaughter, Madilyn Rhoads of Columbus, Miss.; three sisters, Mildred Preston and Linda Miller, both of Birmingham, and Jeanette Bridges of Tuscaloosa; and one brother, John Stewart of Birmingham. Graveside service was Nov. 20 at Elliotsville Cemetery in Alabaster, Danny Miller presiding and Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Lucille Margie Eddings

Pea Ridge resident

Lucille Margie Eddings, 94, of Pea Ridge died Nov. 18, 2003, in Alabaster. She was a member of Mayberry Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school secretary for 20 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, having joined the Boothton Chapter No. 325 in 1937. While with the Boothton chapter, she served as Worthy Matron for a year. After Boothton merged with Montevallo's chapter No. 434, she served as worthy matron three times. She also served as warden.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Tom and Beulah Lawley; her husband of 69 years, Horace Eddings; her five brothers, Lewis Lawley, Wilmer Lawley, Oscar Lawley, Jonah Lawley and R.W. Lawley; and her five sisters, Mable Champion, Lucy Swann, Nellie Peters, Stella Pickett and Birdie Harris.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Bill) Bouldin of Pea Ridge; her son, Hoss (Tina) Eddings of Pea Ridge; four grandchildren, Mark, Charlotte, Lena and Robert; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was Nov. 21 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, the Rev. Robert "Bud" Pickett presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

L.C. Fancher

Randolph resident

L.C. Fancher, 82, of Randolph died Nov. 21, 2003, in Randolph.

Fancher is survived by two daughters, Jean Niswander and Jo Ann Smith, both of Randolph; one son, David Fancher of Randolph; five grandchildren, Tammy Martin, Tonya Wood, Ronda Vowell, Clayton Smith and Amy Eaton; and nine great-grandchildren, Tyler Vowell, Taylor Eaton, Kyndal Eaton, Drew Smith, Taylor Morton, Colby Vowell, T.J. Morton, Trent Morton and Kirsten Wood.

Service was Nov. 23 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, the Revs. Charles Teague and Tom Hammett presiding. Burial followed in Shady Grove Cemetery in Randolph, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Fay Rasberry Isbell

Montevallo resident

Fay Rasberry Isbell of Montevallo, formerly of Westover, died Nov. 21, 2003, in Alabaster. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane.

She is survived by her husband, Freeman A. Isbell of Montevallo, formerly of Westover; two daughters, Jackie I. (John) Jacobs of Roebuck and Jo (Stan) Dawson of Montevallo; three sisters, Dorthy Gould, Louise Graves and Evie Rasberry, all of Irondale; two brothers, Ernest Devine of Crestwood and Milford Rasberry of Irondale; three grandchildren, Kim Jacobs, Jennifer Tidwell and Jared Dawson; and seven great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 24 at Grantswood Baptist Church in Irondale with burial following at Forest Crest Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Ruby Jackson Prater

Mother of eight

Ruby Jackson Prater, 75, of Columbiana died Nov. 22, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born March 1928 in Hackleburg, Ala., and was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Prater.

She is survived by eight children, Sarah Garrett of McCalla, Glenda, Kay and Donna Prater, all of Columbiana, Judy Raney of Hueytown, Bill Prater of San Antonio, Texas, Jerry Prater of Panama City, Fla., and Harvey Prater Jr. of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Huel Jackson of Kenneth, Mo., and Bay Jackson of Flint, Mich.

Service was Nov. 24 at Bolton Brown Service Chapel, with burial following in Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton Brown directing.

Ada Elizabeth "Bubba" Combs Milwood Rhoads

Calera resident

Ada Elizabeth "Bubba" Combs Milwood Rhoads, 79, of Calera died Nov. 23, 2003. She is survived by four children, Robert Lee (Jean) Milwood of Columbiana, Gordon Patrick Milwood of Leeds, Larry Wayne (Sharon) Milwood of Morris and Janet Kay (Jerry) Clarke of Alabaster; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 26 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, Ridout's directing.

Frances G. Scharfenstein

Wilsonville resident

Frances G. Scharfenstein, 92, of Wilsonville died Nov. 23, 2003, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. She is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore A. Scharfenstein. She was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church and the Coosa Garden Club.

She is survived by one son, Theodore A. (Madeline) Scharfenstein of Rockport, Mass.; one daughter, Barbara Scharfenstein of Wilsonville; two grandchildren, Thomas John (Amy Marie) Scharfenstein of Sarasota, Fla., and Mary Madeline (Joshua Eric) Ebert of Raleigh, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 26 at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, Father Jose Manjaly presiding and Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel directing. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Dominican Sisters of Hope Development Office, 320 Powell Avenue, Newbrough, NY 12550.

Ronnie Mac Wilson

Mother of four

Ronnie Mac Wilson, 44, of Shelby died Nov. 16, 2003, in Shelby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alta Mae and Jessie Wilson and her brother, Ricky Ray Wilson.

She is survived by her special friend, Valeria Wilson Smith of Shelby; her daughters, Laura Ann Price and Christy Michelle Wilson, both of Shelby; her sons, John Thomas Wilson and Daniel Lee Bass, both of Pelham; her sisters, Catherine Louise Easterling of Calera, Marie Jones of Montevallo, Joyce Lynn Colburn of Pelham, Savannah Jan Winchell of Melbourne, Fla., Cheryl Denise Tucker of Jemison and Anita Ross of Hayden; and her brothers, Jessie Wayne Wilson of Haleyville and Alex Warren Wilson of Montevallo. Service was Nov. 19 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Maylene, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Judy Diane Burdette Butler

Employed as a nurse's assistant

Judy Diane Burdette Butler, 49, of Maylene died Feb. 3, 2004. She was born in Alabama in June 1954 to Homer Johnson and Jane Lowery Johnson. She had been employed by Sylacauga Hospital, now Coosa Valley Medical Center, as a nurse's assistant.

She is survived by her husband, Doyle Butler; her mother, Jane Lowery Johnson of Maylene; her sons, Chris (Leigh Ann) Burdette Sr. of Sylacauga and Justin Butler of Maylene; her daughters, Donna Burdette and Jessica and Jennifer Butler, all of Maylene; grandchildren, Kirstin Burdette, Emily Beasley, Mary Beasley, C.J. Burdette, Jadey Burdette, Blake Burdette and Kaylee Beasley; her brothers, Jeffrey R. (Laney) Johnson of Adamsville, Bobby N. (Joyce) Johnson of Maylene and Roland (Lisa) Johnson of Alabaster; one sister, Teresa (Jerry) Chappell of Maylene; and numerous other family members and friends.

Service was Feb. 6 at Charter Funeral Home, brothers Waymond Stricklin and Bruce Smart presiding. Burial followed in Cedar Grove, Charter Funeral Home in Calera directing.
