Bessie M. Johnson

Chelsea resident

Bessie M. Johnson, 90, of Chelsea died Feb. 2, 2004, at her home. She was born Nov. 7, 1913, in Talladega County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Johnson, and sons, Elbert and Floyd Johnson.

She is survived by her daughters, Bobbie Patterson and Juanita McClanahan, both of Bessemer, and Joyce Armstrong of Leeds; sons, Wade Johnson of Chelsea, Leonard Johnson of Westover and Roger Johnson of Jemison; 30 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Feb. 5 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. David Wooten presiding. Burial followed in K-Springs Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Donovan David "Toots" Hayes

Formerly of Six Mile

Donovan David "Toots" Hayes, 87, a resident of Knowlwood Assisted Living in Montevallo and formerly of Six Mile, died Feb. 3, 2004, at Brookwood Medical Center following open heart surgery.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Elsie L. Lovejoy Hayes; his oldest son, A.J. "Sonny" Hayes; and his grandson, Jeff Hayes. He was born in Bibb County in Randolph, Ala., in August 1916, the son of the late A.E. and Missouri Smitherman Hayes. His family moved to Six Mile when he was 4 years old. He was known to his friends as "Mr. Toots" and to his family as "Daddy Hayes."

He retired from the University of Montevallo Operations Department in September 1981. Although he only attended school to the ninth grade, his expertise as a carpenter was recognized by many before and after his retirement. He was a deacon at Six Mile Baptist Church for many years.

He is survived by two sons, Ronnie (Annette) Hayes of Fultondale and James (Mary) Hayes of Simpsonville, S.C.; four daughters, Jo Ann (Randy) Huey of Montgomery, Norma (Randy) Morrison of Calera, Paula (Sam) Taormina and Jill (John) Carroll, both of Tuscaloosa; one daughter-in-law, Jill Hayes of Birmingham; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Service was Feb. 6 at Rockco's Funeral Home, Dr. Marcell Burchfield and the Rev. Bob Hope presiding. Burial was in Six Mile Cemetery, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Nellie J. Jeffreys

Columbiana resident

Nellie J. Jeffreys, 86, of Columbiana died Feb. 6, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born in February 1917 in Detroit, Ala., and lived in Hamilton, Ala., until 1978 when she and her late husband, Leaborn Jeffreys, moved to Vincent.

She is survived by her children, Rosa Feltman, Ann Whetman and Tony Jeffreys; her brother, Herbert Sanderson; her sister, Lillie Linsey; nine grandchildren, Keith Feltman, Danny Feltman, Ricky Robbins, Randy Robbins, Deborah Logan, Rita Popwell, Lisa Braden, Nanthan Jeffreys and Amy Knox; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Service was Feb. 9 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. Willard Fredrick presiding. Burial followed in Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Robert E. Mooney

Columbiana resident

Robert E. Mooney, 76, of Columbiana died Feb. 4, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born in August 1927 in Columbiana.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Carl (Lucille) Mooney of Virginia Beach, Va., Jerry Mooney, Linda Chandler and Sara (Ronnie) Conn, all of Columbiana; and a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Service was Feb. 6 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. Stanley Hickey presiding. Burial followed in Johnson Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

George Dewey Roberson

Wilsonville resident

George Dewey Roberson, 74, of Wilsonville died Feb. 7, 2004, at his home. He was born in May 1929 in Wilsonville.

He is survived by his sister, Nona R. Andrews of Birmingham; a brother, Leonard Roberson of New Orleans, La.; and nieces and nephews, Keith Roberson, Daryl Roberson, Vanessa Roberson, Melinda Borden, Maria Carboy and Monica Scheil.

Service was Feb. 10 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Revs. Steve Thomas, Sammy McEwen and Red Vansant presiding. Burial followed in Wilsonville City Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow directing.

George Allen "Tom" Willis

Shelby resident

George Allen "Tom" Willis, 59, of Shelby died Feb. 7, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born in June 1944 in Shelby.

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda Willis of Shelby; his children, Margaret (Mark) Lawley and Tommie (Frankie) Hope; six grandchildren, Autumn, Adam, Dakota, Caleb, Ashlin and Kelley; three brothers, Jerry, James, Raymond and B.F. Willis; and one sister, Margaret Connell.

Service was Feb. 10 at First Baptist Church of Shelby, the Revs. Howard Brasher and Gary Bean presiding. Burial followed in Old Shelby Cemetery.

Isaac Richmond Boothe Sr.

Pea Ridge resident

Isaac Richmond Boothe Sr., 75, of Pea Ridge died Jan. 31, 2004, in Pea Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Belcher Boothe of Pea Ridge; four daughters, Nancy Boothe (James) Carlee of Pea Ridge, Sandra Boothe (Benny) Stephens of Pea Ridge, Frances Boothe (Danny) Caudle of Jemison and Amy Boothe (Joey) Holsomback of Pea Ridge; five sons, Alvin Boothe, Isaac (Tommie) Boothe Jr., Bobby (Cindy) Boothe and Tommy (Deborah) Boothe, all of Ashby, Ala., and Billy Boothe of Pea Ridge; one brother, Edwin (Peggy) Boothe of Boothtown; one brother-in-law, John Lajoux; 30 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Service was Feb. 3 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel, brother Bill Jones presiding. Burial followed in Macedonia Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Rockco's directing.

Willie T. Bradley

Grandfather of 12

Willie T. Bradley, 86, died Feb. 1, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born July 17, 1917, in Shelby County and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bradley.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet (Robert) Kirkland of Alabaster and Terry (Mike) Lovett of Birmingham; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Bradley of Columbiana and Tinsley Bradley of Birmingham; and two sisters, Maxine Forham of Tennessee and Myrtle Templin of Birmingham.

Service will be today, Feb. 4 at Bolton-Letlow Chapel, the Rev. John Duncan presiding. Burial followed in Pinelawn Gardens, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Recle D. Carden

Shelby resident

Recle D. Carden, 94, of Shelby died Feb. 1, 2004, at a local care facility. She was born in November 1909 in Shelby.

She is survived by two daughters, Jean King of Columbiana and Fay Porter of Shelby; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maggie Latimer and Phyllis Harris, both of Helena, and Judy Robinson of Panama City, Fla.

Service was Feb. 3 at First Baptist Church of Shelby, the Rev. Howard Brasher presiding. Burial followed in New Shelby Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.

Walter Elvin Carden

Shelby resident

Walter Elvin Carden, 81, of Shelby died Jan. 28, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born in August 1922 in Shelby County. He was retired from the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Carden; his children, Edwin Carden, Charles Carden and Paul Carden, all of Shelby, and Alan Carden of Chelsea; four step-daughters, Elsie Jones, Essie Blankenship, Linda Edmondson and Glenda Sheffield, all of Shelby; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 30 at First Baptist Church in Shelby, the Rev. Howard Brasher presiding. Burial followed at New Shelby Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing.
