Hazel Bartee Attaway, 68, of Westover died Jan. 19, 2004.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald W. Attaway; four daughters, Wanda (Steve) Powers, Donna (Bobby) King, Teresa (Butch) Gulledge and Dee Anne (James) Deason; three sisters, Virginia Wilson, Ina Glidewell and Beverly Gupton; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 21 at Kilgroe Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Mt. Signal Cemetery in Westover, Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds directing.

Ed Bishop

Korean War veteran

Ed Bishop, 60, of Alabaster died Jan. 17, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Shelby County and a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Bishop; his children, Kelvin (Mary) Allen, Kevin Bishop, Kyle Bishop, Monica Trenholm and Darlene Hudson; brothers and sisters, Taft Bishop Jr., Jessie Frank Bishop, Howard Earl (Tony) Baker, Virginia (William) Allen and Cynthia (Jimmy) Underwood.

Service was Jan. 24 at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Alabaster, pastor Richard Davis presiding. Burial was in Longview Cemetery in Longview, Ala., Westside Funeral Home in Calera directing.

Sarah H. Boyett

Vestavia Hills Church of Christ member

Sarah H. Boyett, 76, of Hoover died Jan. 22, 2004. She was a member of the Vestavia Hills Church of Christ.

She is survived by one son, Kyle G. Boyett of Hoover; one daughter, Kathy Robinson of Hoover; one brother, Bob Holley of Hamilton; four grandchildren, David, Katie, Jackson and Luke; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was Jan. 24 at Southern Heritage Chapel, the Rev. Douglas Matlock presiding. Burial followed in Barnsville in Hamilton, Ridout's Southern Heritage directing.

Charles E. "Charlie" Bragg

Vincent resident

Charles E. "Charlie" Bragg, 54, of Vincent died Jan. 6, 2004.

He is survived by his daughters, Sherry Bruner, Michelle (Paul) Chandler and Robin Bragg; five grandchildren, Shelby, Brittany, Crystal, Destiny and Bradley; a brother, Reggie Bragg; and sisters, Ann Bellew, Nell Trott, Jane Trott and Purna Wallis.

Service was Jan. 10 at Ridout's Southern Heritage, the Rev. Lawrence Parker presiding. Burial followed in Stand Pipe Cemetery, Ridout's Southern Heritage directing.

Mattie O'Neal Eddings

Grandmother of 27

Mattie O'Neal Eddings, 94, of Brierfield died Jan. 24, 2004, in Montevallo.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret (Keith) Lewis of Brierfield, Gwendolyn (Eulas) Mitchell of Montevallo and Joanne (Lewis) Wright of Talking Rock, Ga.; one son, Lennis Eddings of Valparaiso, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Jan. 27 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, Vernon Williamson presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Rockco's directing.

Steve Harris

Chelsea resident

Steve Harris of Chelsea died Jan. 19, 2004, after a long fight with cancer. He was a graduate of Auburn University where he was a member of the ODK national honor fraternity as well as the Auburn Plainsmen and the university's baseball team. He was also a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity where he served two years as treasurer and one year as president. He went on to receive his juris doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law. In addition to a law practice, he created and managed a large rental property business which included vacation rentals on Alabama's gulf coast.

Previously of Birmingham, he has lived in Chelsea for 11 years, where he attended Liberty Baptist Church and was involved in many activities including youth sports.

He is survived by his wife, Becky Harris; his sons, Spencer and Brian Harris; his daughter-in-law, Melise; his parents, Irby and Rosa Lee Harris; and his brother, Scott (Linda) Harris.

Service was Jan. 22 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens Chapel in Trussville.

Vera Mae Horton

Former Calera resident

Vera Mae Horton, 85, of Hoover, formerly of Calera died Jan. 24, 2004, in Hoover. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Joe Horton, and her son, Charles Wayne Horton.

She is survived by two daughters, Vera June Blackerby of Pelham and Jimmie Ruth Headley of Missouri; four sons, Morris Elred Horton of Clanton, Elton Lee Horton of Jemison, Harry Dean Horton of Hoover and Robert Larry Horton of Pelham; one brother, Lynn Garrett of Calera; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Service was Jan. 28 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, Greg Headley and Bruce Headley presiding. Burial was in Shelby Memory Gardens in Calera, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Lois Smith Hughes

Shiloh United Methodist Church

Lois Smith Hughes, 80, a native of Bessemer, formerly of Calera and a resident of Daphne for the past two years, died Jan. 24, 2004, at a local hospice facility. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Benjie (Donna) Hughes of Daphne; four sisters, Sarah Hartley of Hoover, Edna (Loren) Pierce of Picture Butte, Alberta, Can., Betty (Don) Banks of Lillian and Janette (Jimmy) Chatham of Forestdale; grandsons, Benjamin and Garrett Hughes of Daphne; special friend and caregiver, Pat Solorzano of Fairhope; and many other relatives and friends.

Service was Jan. 27 at the church in Calera, the Rev. Steve Smith presiding. Burial followed in Union Grove Cemetery in Jemison, Fairhope Funeral Home directing.

Lee Jarvis Jr.

Bessemer resident

Lee Jarvis Jr., 80, of Bessemer died Jan. 19, 2004, in Alabaster.

Survivors include one sister, Rena Martin Hembley of West Blocton; one brother, Virgil "Doc" Jarvis of Pea Ridge; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was Jan. 22 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Terry Linhelm presiding. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery in Pea Ridge, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Oliver Eugene "Ollie" Lamar

Trim contractor

Oliver Eugene "Ollie" Lamar, 50, of Jemison died Jan. 22, 2004, at Chilton Medical Center in Clanton.

He was employed as a trim contractor.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa Lamar of Jemison; his daughters, Crystal Lamar and Lindsey Lamar, both of Jemison; one grandson, Gaven Torres; one sister, Mary Arnold of Chelsea; one brother, Carl Lamar of Clanton; and his mother-in-law, Vernette Powell of Clanton.

Service was Jan. 24 at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, the Revs. Lee Prater and Roland Foster presiding. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery, Martin Funeral Home directing.
