Lucille McCollum

80, former Russellville resident, Florida

Lucille McCollum of Pensacola, Fla., died Saturday, October 11, 1997.

The funeral was held Thursday, October 16, at Akins Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Charlie Thorn officiating.

Burial was in the K.P. City Cemetery, Russellville.

She was born in Lawrence County to the late Alvie and Rosella Hollimon.

Survivors include her husband, Grady McCollum; a son, Gene Ray McCollum of Pensacola; a sister, Nell Hagood of Moulton; and one grandson.

Obie Scruggs

78, homemaker, Town Creek

Funeral for Obie Scruggs was held Saturday, October 18, noon, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jessie Little officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Scruggs died Monday, October 13, 1997, at Columbia Medical Center Shoals.

She was born in Lawrence County to Neasby and Lela Disser Williams. Mrs. Scruggs was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother's Board and the Missionary Society.

She is survived by her husband, Rev. Matt Scruggs; seven sons, Calvin Scruggs of Decatur, Matt Scruggs Jr. of Russellvile, Ark., Robert Scruggs of Tuscumbia, Lt. Col. Samuel Scruggs of Fort Bragg, N.C., David Scruggs of Town Creek, Obadiah Scruggs of Florence and George Scruggs of Atlanta; four daughters, Ruth King and Josephine Rollins, both of Bessemer, Lila Dickerson of Weaver and Ester Patterson of Decatur; three brothers, Cal Williams and George Williams, both of Decatur and Leroy Williams of Chattanooga; two sisters, Sylvia Robinson of Sheffield and Tiny Savage of Decatur; 35 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Sons were the pallbearers.

Howard Brooks

69, World War II veteran, Trinity

Funeral for Howard Brooks, who died Thursday, October 16, 1997, at home, was held Sunday, October 19, at Lawrence Funeral Home. The 2 p.m. service was officiated by the Revs. Amos Hood, Edward Hood and Keith Prince.

Burial was in the Mount Hope United Methodist Cemetery.

Mr. Brooks was born in Lawrence County and was a member of Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Evie Jane Brooks; two sons, James Loyd Brooks of Eva and Danny Brooks of Moulton; two daughters, Dajuana Childers and Hilda Smith, both of Moulton; one brother, Edward Brooks of Moulton; two sisters, Rosa Nell White of Red Bay and Margie Smithson of Nashville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Richard Smith, Louie Smith III, Scott McElroy, Johnny McCutcheon, Harold Parker and Ricky Brewington.

Norman Roy Young

73, retired, Moulton

Funeral for Norman Young, who died Monday, October 20, 1997, at NHC Healthcare, was held Wednesday, October 22, at Parkway Funeral Home chapel. The 2 p.m. service was officiated by C.G. Reding.

Burial was in the Somerville Cemetery.

Mr. Young was born in Lawrence County to the late Roy and Maggie Young. He was a member of Somerville United Methodist Church and the Eagles Club. Mr. Young was a World War II veteran and was retired from the Pet Milk Company after more than 30 years of service.

He is survived by a son, Charles "Wayne" Young of Somerville; one daughter, Barbara Young Frost of Moulton; a brother, Charles Emmett Young of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Purswell of Rebecca, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John Burnum, Jack Young Jr., Wayne Rogers, Jimmy Ransom, Glenn Williams and Donnie Williams.

Arnold Pettus Birdwell

63, Decatur

Funeral for Arnold Pettus Birdwell is today (Thursday), October 23, 2 p.m., at Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur with the Rev. Bryan Hall officiating.

Burial is to be in the Roselawn Cemetery, Decatur.

Mr. Birdwell died Tuesday, October 21, 1997, in Decatur.

He was born in Limestone County.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Ray Birdwell; two daughters, Cathey Flowers of Decatur and Paula Porter of Mount Hope; a son, Wayne Birdwell of Decatur; his mother, Effie Sue Birdwell of Decatur; five sisters, Mirine Eubanks, Bessie Flack, and Brenda Hill, all of Decatur; Francis Brackeen and Carolyn Williams, both of Limestone County; three brothers, L.L. Birdwell and Jimmy Birdwell, both of Tanner and Glen Birdwell of Decatur; six grandchildren.

Pallbearers are to be J.C. Brannon, Dewayne Parker, Tony Thrasher, Sixto Martinez, Mike Smith and Winford Turner.

Alvin Allen

80, retired security guard, Trinity

Funeral for Alvin Allen, who died Saturday, October 25, 1997, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center, was held Tuesday, October 28, at Parkway Funeral Home. The 11 a.m. service was officiated by Nicky Pressnell.

Burial was in the East Lawrence Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Allen was born to Saul and Lillian Allen in Huntsville, Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from West Security. Mr. Allen was a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Mavene Allen; a son, Stanley Allen of Trinity; three daughters, Mary Williams, Donna McGregor and Debbie Allen, all of Trinity; a sister, Mary Littrell of Sugarland, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were members of the military.

William "Will" Matthew Sherrill

19, spin-line operator, Hillsboro

Funeral for William "Will" Matthew Sherrill was held Saturday, October 25, 2 p.m., at Parkway Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Bolan and Ricky Nichols officiating.

Burial was in the East Lawrence Memorial Gardens.

Will died Thursday, October 23, 1997, in an automobile accident on Lawrence County 217 in Hillsboro.

He was born in Morgan County to Jack and Carol Sherrill and was a 1997 graduate of East Lawrence High School. Will played on the football and baseball teams at East Lawrence. He was employed by Hexcel Corp.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Jaclyn Sherrill of East Lawrence; and his grandparents, Julian and Norma Chambers of Gardendale.

Pallbearers were Todd Hollis, Jamie "Rock" Hutto, Brandon Letson, Lucus Hitt, Bo Sams and Dustin Parker.

Members of the 1997 East Lawrence baseball team were the honorary pallbearers.

Lillian Gertrude Kidd

85, homemaker, Town Creek

Funeral for Lillian Gertrude Kidd, who died Wednesday, October 22, 1997, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center, was held Friday, October 24, at Elliott Funeral Home. The 2 p.m. service was officiated by Howell Bigham.

Burial was in the Providence Cemetery.

She was born in Lawrence County and was a member of the Church of Christ in Hatton.

Survivors include three brothers, J.D. Kidd and Hollis Kidd, both of Town Creek and Wheeler Kidd of Ardmore; and a sister, Bessie LeMay of Moulton.

Pallbearers were Donald Kidd, Dale Kidd, Randy Kidd, Eric Kidd, Ronnie Kidd and Neal LeMay.

Glenn R. Jones

47, painter, Trinity

Glenn R. Jones died Thursday, October 23, 1997, at Decatur General Hospital.

The funeral was held Saturday, October 25, 2 p.m., at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Faye Tippett officiating. There was a private burial.

He was a native of Moulton.

Survivors include his mother, Ollie Jones of Trinity; one brother, Gerald Paul Jones of Trinity; and three sisters, Pauline Jones Stockbauer of Baton Rouge, Tonya Jones and Rachel Ray, both of Trinity.

Charles "Luke" Lewis Nix

55, production worker, Moulton

Funeral for Charles "Luke" Lewis Nix was held Sunday, October 26, 2 p.m., at Priceville Funeral Home with the Revs. George Sparks and Steve Agee officiating.

Burial was in the East Lawrence Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Nix died Friday, October 24, 1997, at his residence.

He was born in Marion County and worked at Copeland Industries.

He is survived by three sons, Roger Nix and Casey Nix, both of Trinity and Michael Nix of Hillsboro; two daughters, Lisa Green and Deborah Rutherford, both of Trinity; his parents, Rex and Alma Nix of Chattanooga; three sisters, Kathy Wright and Jean Manley, both of Chattanooga, and Sylvia Morehead of Sumiton; and seven grandchildren.

Nephews were the pallbearers.

James Crayton McClanahan Sr.

95, minister, Florence

James Crayton McClanahan Sr. died Saturday, October 25, 1997, at his residence.

The funeral was held Monday, October 27, 10 a.m., at Elkins Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Emerald Bailey and Bro. William Cagle officiating.

Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Iron City, Tenn.

Mr. McClanahan was born in Wayne County, Tenn. to the late Leonard McClanahan and Leona (Lelia) McClanhan Gunter. He had lived in the Florence area for 72 years. Mr. McClanhan was a Free Will Baptist minister for 62 years and was a retired farmer and carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Bailey McClanahan; four sons, James Crayton McClanahan Jr. and Othel R. McClanahan, both of Muscle Shoals, Thomas N. McClanahan and Johnny McClanahan, both of Florence; two daughters, Martha McClanahan Bowen of Decatur and Orpah McClanahan Cox of Florence; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons including, Stephen Ray McClanahan, Gregory Allan McClanahan, Edward Lee Bowen, Alan Dale Bowen, Charles Sloan Cox, John Fay McClanahan Jr. and grandsons-in-law, Roger Dale Bowling, Michael Vernon Herston, Barry Layne Rinks, Walter Jackson Staples and Bobby Thomas Garrison.
