Philip Bolt
(Died August 16, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Philip Bolt, age 63 of Lineville, will be Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Bro. David Holcombe and Bro. Benny Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.

Mr. Bolt passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Russell Medical Center in Alexander City. A Randolph County native, he grew up in Lee County, graduating from Beauregard High School and Opelika State Technical School. After a period of employment with the Uniroyal Company, Philip became an Alabama State Trooper, serving for several years in the Montgomery and Eufaula area. He then moved out West and worked as a driving instructor, automobile salesman and truck driver. After his retirement in 1995, Mr. Bolt settled in Clay County.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Bolt, of Lineville; three sons: Philip Bolt II (Tracy) of Prattville, Michael Bolt of New York and Brandon Bolt (Jessica) of Valley; one sister, Norma Wilson (Jeff) of Wetumpka; one brother, Rick Bolt (Susan) of Auburn and three grandchildren: Cara Bolt, Matthew Bolt and Alyssa Bolt. He was preceded in death by his parents: R. B. Bolt and Velerie Jones Bolt and one brother, Edward Bolt.

Pallbearers will be Steve Brown, Austin Freeman, Jamie Griffin, Chris Mitchell, Mark Mullally and Steven Waldrop. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Freeman, Tony Hodge, Derek Murray and Joel Pettus.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Thursday.

Violet Suggs Smith
(Died August 22, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Violet Suggs Smith, age 91 of Delta, will be Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Mark Williams and Rev. Ronnie Key officiating. Burial will follow in the Center West Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith passed away on Monday, August 22, 2011 at her home. She was a native of Anniston and early on had lived in Clay County for several years. In 1958, she moved with her family to Marietta, Georgia where she enjoyed working as a quality control inspector for the “Lovable Company” in Buford. Mrs. Smith returned to Clay County following the death of her husband in 1997. She loved taking care of her family, enjoyed baking peanut butter cakes for her grandchildren and was a member of Center West Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters: Barbara Smith Bell (Bobby) and Vivian S. Lyle (Jim), both of Delta; one son, Lenwerd Wayne Smith (Linda) of Monticello, GA, three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Mc Donald Suggs and Bessie Wright Suggs; her husband of 65 years, Lenwerd B. Smith; four sisters: Emogene Turner, Louise Holland, Jett Patton and Florence Suggs; three brothers: Jack Suggs, Norman Suggs and Douglas Suggs.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Smith’s grandsons: Andrew Moore, Blakely Moore, David Moore, Will Moore, Garrett Reaves, Brett Smith and Durand Smith.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2:00 P.M.

Ruth Delaner Elliott
(Died October 13, 2011)

Funeral services for Ms. Ruth Delaner Elliott, age 66 of Mellow Valley, will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Bethel Christian Church with Bro. Jim Arnall and Pastor Jerry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.

Ms. Elliott passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at her home. A native of Alexander City, she lived most of her life in Clay County. Ruth was a graduate of Clay County High School (Class of 1963) and worked for the Clay County Board of Education as a school bus driver for over 27 years. She had also worked for Russell Manufacturing for a number of years. Ms. Elliott loved quilting, gardening, baking, canning and taking care of her precious pets. She attended Bethel Christian Church.

Ms. Elliott is survived by one daughter, Delana Marlene Morrison (Robert) of Altoona; one son, Chris Elliott (Crystal) of Alexander City; one brother, Jimmy Morris (Mary Anne) of Mellow Valley; eight grandchildren: Joshua Bruce Elliott, Joshua Wesley Morrison, Jessie Kade Elliott, Autumn Leigh Ann Morrison; Kimberly Faye Bailey, Austin Connor Elliott, Brock Daniel Elliott and Harper Adelyne Elliott plus three great-grandchildren: Joshua Kade Elliott, Christian Wayne Elliott and Essie Ruth Elliott. She was preceded in death by her parents: Clatis Morris and Nina Lee Kilgore Morris; one daughter, Johnnie Cherl Elliott; one sister, Peggy Jean Fuller and one brother, Milton Morris.

Pallbearers will be Josh Elliott, Gene Lowry, Scotty Lowry, Timmy Knight, Charles Craft and Tim McKay. Honorary pallbearers will be Bus Drivers for the Clay County School System.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, October 15, 2001 from 5:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Sunday.

Edna Marie Character
(Died October 31, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Marie Character, age 82 of Lineville, will be Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Black’s Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Ronnie Key officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Character passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011 at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham. A Randolph County native, she was a former resident of Cleburne County, but had lived most of her life in Clay County. Mrs. Character worked as a seamstress at Higgins Manufacturing in Lineville and Sewell Manufacturing in Heflin. She was a graduate of Lineville High School, a member of Black’s Chapel Methodist Church and enjoyed yard work, walking and being active.

Mrs. Character is survived by one daughter, Vickie C. Wise (Willie) of Ranburne; two sons: Randy Character (LaJuan) and William Character both of Lineville; one sister, Ellen Key (Ronnie) of Delta; four brothers: Ellis Craven (Jewell) of Oxford, Jim Craven (Dean) of Jacksonville, Sheral Craven of Pensacola, FL and Wayne Craven (Belinda) of Hamilton; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Columbus Barto Craven and Gladys Palmer Bolt Craven; her husband, Blake E. Character; three brothers and two sisters: CB, Ralph, Dolphus, Willie and Betty.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Angles, Doug Bishop, Wayne Character, Brian McCormick, Mike Wright and Nick Windsor.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Wednesday.

Jerry Wayne Hayes
(Died November 2, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Wayne Hayes, age 60 of Ashland, will be Friday, November 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Scott Epperson and Bro. Dennis Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hayes passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the home of his sister. He was a life-long resident of Clay County, a graduate of Bibb Graves High School and had worked as a Home Building Contractor.

Mr. Hayes is survived by two sons: Shannon Hayes and Christopher Hayes both of Calera; four sisters: Gale Smith (Doyle) of Goodwater, Dale Hale of Texas; Karen Pope (Bill) of Anniston and Betty Richardson (Carlton) of Cullman and two brothers: Jimmy Hayes (Debbie) of Sylacauga and Michael Hayes (Jerrie) of Ashland.

Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Thurman Hayes and Willie Maude Wolfe Hayes and a nephew, Kevin Suggs.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Rosson, Corey Hayes, Terry Hayes, Jason Richardson, Randy Frost and David Jackson.

Helen Leven Taylor Griffin
(Died November 2, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Leven Taylor Griffin, age 87 of Childersburg, formerly of Clay County, will be Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Lineville with Bro. Thompson Pitts and Bro. Chad Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Griffin passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham. She was born in Clay County and worked as the Cafeteria Manager for Mellow Valley High School, retiring after 28 years of service. Mrs. Griffin was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Lineville.

Mrs. Griffin is survived by two daughters: Pam Guy (Arnold) of Lineville and Phyllis Avery (Bill) of Childersburg; three sons: Charles Griffin (Rose) of Ashland, Homer Griffin (LaJaun) of Decatur; Wayne Griffin (Mary) of Alexander City; three sisters: Lee Ann Baldwin of Mississippi, Margaret Griffin of Ashland and Jimmie Lou Coleman of Pell City; one brother, Travis Taylor of Memphis, TX plus 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her parents, Tommy Lee Taylor and Maggie Milam Taylor; her husband, Homer G. Griffin; one son, Jimmy Ray Griffin; four sisters: Hattie Foster, Mary Gregg, Bobbie Jean Hall and Mae Cofield plus two brothers: Leon Taylor and Bill Taylor.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Friday, November 4, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and until service time on Saturday.

Greg Hill
(Died November 3, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Gregory “Greg” Curtiss Hill, age 59 of Lineville, formerly of Rocky Face, GA will be Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. David Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hill passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the home of his mother. A native of Atlanta, GA, he was a graduate of Osborne High School. Greg then graduated from DeVry Institute in Atlanta with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked as a technical engineer at Chattanooga Cable Television before becoming the owner and operator of Rocky Face Communications, a television cable construction firm. Greg loved to restore antique automobiles and was gifted with talent that enabled him to fix just about anything.

Mr. Hill is survived by one daughter, Vannessa Coffey, (Jason) of Rocky Face, GA; one son, J D Hill III; two sisters: Avice Fargason (Jimmy) of Mellow Valley and Jennetta Boring (Bob) of Lineville; his mother, Margaret Helen Hill of Lineville; the mother of his children, Debbie A. Hill of Cohutta, GA; one sister-in-law, Catherine Hill of Lineville and three grandchildren: Drake Miller, Trenton Miller and Cooper Bryson. He was preceded in death by his father, J D Hill Jr. and one brother, Fred Hill.

Pallbearers will be Tony Hill, Stacy Cantrell, Todd Smith, Bob Boring, Justin Fargason and Jimmy Fargason.

Joseph Robert Alvord
(Died November 3, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Mr. Joseph Robert Alvord, age 75 of Lineville, passed away at his residence on Thursday, November 3, 2011. Visitation will be at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Monday, November 7, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

A Michigan native, Mr. Alvord lived most of his life in Pasco, Florida. He had lived in Clay County for the past five years and prior to his retirement had worked for the Sherwin Williams Paint Company as a shelving and product display installer. Mr. Alvord was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Alvord is survived by six children: Lynn Marton, Kim Truss and Dawne Harter, all of Michigan, Kym Carpenter and David Herbison, both of Florida and Matthew Alexander of California; one brother, Richard Alvord of Washington State plus 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

William Henry Carter
(Died November 6, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. William Henry Carter, age 88 of Lineville, will be Friday, November 11, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Springhill Baptist Church with Rev. E. Tramaine Solomon, Rev. Frank Jones and Rev. Thomas Knight officiating. Burial will follow in the Lineville Community Cemetery.

Mr. Carter passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his home. A native and life-long resident of Clay County, he worked at Tyson Foods and also at the Pruett Brothers’ Sawmill. Mr. Carter was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Ashland.

He is survived by one daughter, Janice Marie Carter of New Castle, PA; one son, Dennis Mitchell Carter of Lineville; five grandchildren: Mark Dennis Carter of Lineville, Travis Antonio Carter of Oceanside, CA, Donna Louise Jabarani of New Castle, PA, Alexander Carter of New Castle, PA and John Heard of Lineville plus a number of nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Richard Carter and Priscilla Mosley Carter plus one sister and three brothers.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Thursday, November 10, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and until one hour prior to service time. He will lie in state at the church for one hour on Friday.

Louvell "Donkey" Hallman
(Died October 7, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Louvell “Donkey” Hallman, age 60 of Ashland, will be Monday, October 10, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. Liberty Holiness Church with Bro. Perry Sims and Donald DeeLee officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Hallman passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011 at his home. A native of Tallapoosa County having lived most of his life in Clay County, he had worked for Steve Thompson Logging as a saw operator and a heavy equipment operator.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Baird Hallman of Goodwater; two daughters: Stormy Roberson (Arrie) of Ashland and Tracy Roberson (Lee) of Goodwater; three sons: Ryan Hallman of Goodwater, Christopher Price (Diane) of Kellyton and Billy Price (Tori) of Goodwater; three sisters: Dorothy Jean Peoples (Jimmy) of Alexander City, Shirley Faye Cox (Junior) of Ashland and Katherine Evon Peters of Alexander City; one brother, Henry Douglas Thrower of Goodwater; 11 grandchildren: Zachery Price, Blake Roberson, Destiny Price, Brooke Roberson, Levi Curtis, Nataleigh Price, McKenzie Hallman, Lawson Little, Annika Price, Bridgette Roberson and Tasha Horn; two great-grandchildren: Maxx Roberson and Maddison Roberson and two Godsons: Adam Jones and Pershing Horn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Amos Hallman and Mary Will Sherrer Hallman and one brother, Jeffery Lynn Hallman.
