Mrs. Preston, a long time resident of Talladega, AL., was the oldest law enforcement officer of AL. She was in the end of her 3rd term of Constable for District 5 for Talladega. She delivered court orders and subpoenas for many attorneys in and around Talladega County. She also worked as a security guard for the Talladega Speedway during the race weekend.

She was a member of the Talladega Creek Baptist Church, and in years past a member of the Talladega Garden Society, the Homemakers Guild, the Red Cross Volunteers (and received several awards for years of service) and was probably most remembered for owning and operating the Dairy Queen on North Street for many years. She was instrumental in bringing the Dairy Queen franchises to Alabama by opening and operating the first Dairy Queen in Birmingham previous to opening the one in Talladega.

She was a very clever and astute businesswoman in times when it was very hard for a woman to succeed in business. At one point in her career she campaigned and ran for the position of Secretary of State of Alabama, and had received a citation from the Democratic Party for loyalty and service in helping with the election board and voting centers.

In between her business career and public service she found time to organize and direct the Talladega Rhythm Band, canned all kinds of fruits and vegetables, and made many beautiful quilts and afghans, which she gave as treasured gifts to many loved ones and friends. All this, while being a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend to countless others. She always had a smile and encouraging word for those she came across. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
