EMMET CARROLL PILKINGTON

TALLADEGA — Emmet Carroll (Pete) Pilkington, 66, died Oct 1 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Midway Memory Gardens Funeral Home.

HAZEL JEAN DICKEY SIMS

PELL CITY — Funeral service for Hazel Jean Dickey Sims, 75, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home chapel in Pell City with the Rev. Dale Foote and the Rev. Jackie Connell officiating. Burial will be in Valley Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sims died Oct. 1 at her residence. She was a lifelong resident of Pell City and retired from St. Clair Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Sims; sons, Robert Sims of Scottsboro and James Edward Sims of Pell City; daughter, Mary Walls of Pell City; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Brian Adams, Parker Blankenship, Mark Sims, Tim Sims, Eddie Sims and Davey Sims.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

INFANT THOMAS

SYLACAUGA — Graveside service for Infant Thomas will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sylacauga Cemetery with the Rev. Anthony Kirkland officiating.

The infant died Oct. 2 at Baptist Medical Center East in Birmingham.

He is survived by mother, Shana Thomas of Sylacauga; father, Santangelo Funderburg of Sylacauga; grandparents, Gary Spidell and Sheryl Spidell of Sylacauga and the Rev. Anthony Kirkland and Terita Kirkland of Sylacauga; great-grandparents, Mattie Stafford of Sylacauga and the Rev. Junior Little and Kay Little of Sylacauga; and a host of other relatives.

Community Funeral Home will direct the service.

VELMA BUSBY WINDHAM

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Velma Busby Windham, 81, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home chapel in Sylacauga with the Rev. Max Butram officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Childersburg.

Mrs. Busby died Oct. 1 at Talladega Health Care in Talladega. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Thomas W. Windham; son, William Thomas Windham; grandson, Chris Jones; brothers, Aubrey Busby and Benjamin Busby and parents, George and Vannie Busby.

She is survived by sons, Ronald P. Jones and wife Brenda Jones of Childersburg, Patrick O. Windham of Lebanon, Tenn., and Thomas D. Windham of Birmingham; sisters, Easter Savanna McLemore of Oakman and Jesse Mitchell of Brent; brother, Edward Busby of Oakman; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

JAMES REESE BARNES JR.

James Reese Barnes Jr. (Jim) was born May 30, 1942, in Mobile, Alabama to James Reese Barnes Sr. and Calene Taylor Barnes. He unexpectedly died at home Sept. 17, 2003.

Jim attended Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, and graduated from high school in Seattle, Washington. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1965. He completed his undergraduate work at Enterprise Junior College and Troy State University in Alabama. Jim finished his Masters degree in Visual Disabilities and postgraduate studies in Educational Administration at Florida State University.

Jim retired Aug. 30, 2002, after a 32-year career in education serving visually handicapped and special education students. He taught 4 years at the Alabama School for the Blind where he also coached the wrestling team to a 1972 Alabama State Wrestling Championship. He taught two years near Sydney, Australia, as a teacher for severely handicapped students. In Missouri he was the principal of the Missouri School for the Blind for 5 years, and helped start a program for teachers of the visually handicapped at Lindenwood College. For the last 19 years he was a special education teacher with the Windham Independent School District in Huntsville, Texas.

In the past year since his retirement, Jim continued to support his wife Diana in their insurance agency, and completed training and exams for several insurance licenses.

While at FSU, Jim met his wife of over 28 years, Diana. In 1983, they moved to Huntsville, Texas, where they raised their children, Jimmy and Evette. As an active member of that community, Jim coached and refereed for many youth leagues of Huntsville, and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Jim enjoyed athletic challenges such as riding bicycles with his son from Texas to Florida, taking flying lessons, and running 40 miles on his 40th birthday. His passions included the outdoors, traveling, maintaining his property in Destin, and most importantly family.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Reese Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Diana; son, James Reese III; daughter, Evette Calene; mother, Calene Larsen of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; brother, Taylor Barnes of Perdido Key, Florida; and a host of loving family and friends.

Burial was Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Barranacas National military Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida, near his father, father-in-law, and several close family members. A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 27, 4 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Huntsville, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to The Jim Barnes Memorial Scholarship for Teachers of the Visually Impaired, c/o the FSU Foundation, P.O. Box 38189, Tallahassee, Florida 32315-8189, telephone (850) 644-5250.

HORACE WILLIAM DAVIS

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Horace William Davis, 81, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Marble City Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Davis died Oct. 2 at Coosa Valley Nursing Home in Sylacauga. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Myrtle Murphy Davis; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hartford Davis; two sisters, Virginia Isabell and Earlyne Carter; and five brothers, Royce Davis, Walter Davis Jr., Edwin Davis, Thomas Davis and Robert Davis.

He was a member of Marble City Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and the former owner and operator of Davis Welding Company.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Davis of Sylacauga; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jim and Joyce (Davis) Heigl and Bob and Linda (Davis) Hopwood, all of Sylacauga; two step-daughters, Barbara Rodgers of Mobile and Peggy Dickerson of Harpersville; two step-sons, Jimmy Vincent and Sammy Vincent, both of Birmingham; one brother, Chris Davis of Navarre, Fla.; one sister, Corrine Davis Morgan of Alexander City; three grandchildren, Tracie Hopwood, Lee Hopwood and Jessica Houston; three great-grandchildren, Maegan Houston, Macie Houston and Blake Houston; and several step-grandchildren.

Deacons of Marble City Baptist Church will be pallbearers.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to Marble City Baptist Church Building Fund.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

WANDA G. LEE CLARK

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for Wanda G. Lee Clark will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel with the Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Childersburg Cemetery.

Mrs. Clark died Oct. 3 at Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville, Ga. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, James Clinton Lee and Vivian Giddens Hickman.

She is survived by her fiance, Lawrence Charlton of Peachtree City, Ga.; two sons, Darren I. Hughes of Spotsylvania, Va. and Keith W. Hughes of Emporia, Va.; two daughters, Chirese M. Anderson of Bumpass, Va. and Angela D. Lewis of Florida; one sister, Monza A. Fuller of Acworth, Ga.; one brother, Phillip C. Lee of Sylacauga; four grandchildren, Brooke L. Anderson, Cassie L. Anderson, Megan N. Anderson and Robert L. Hughes.

Family and friends will be pallbearers.

Visitation will be Sunday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel will direct the service.

JOHN THOMAS CUNNINGHAM

TALLADEGA — Funeral service for John Thomas Cunningham, 50, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sonny Champion officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park.

Mr. Cunningham died Oct. 3 in Blount County.

He was a native and life-long resident of Talladega County, a graduate of Munford High School and attended Jacksonville State University. He was a farmer and a member of Munford United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Tina Cunningham of Munford; one daughter, Jamie Cunningham of Munford; one son, John Kyle Cunningham of Munford; one sister, Sandra C. Champion of Oxford; and one grandson, Randall Purdy Cunningham of Munford.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Duke, Mack Pruitt, Bill Browning, Jimmy Mac Stephens, John Kyle Cunningham, Mike Blackburn, Bill Jones, Scott Pruitt and Mike Pruitt.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Strickland, Lewie Duke, Mike Waters, Jim Wade, Roger Thompson and David Thompson.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

BERNICE L. GOODEN

TALLADEGA — Bernice L. Gooden, 68, of 350 Goodenville Road, Munford, died Oct. 3 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

LILOISE ROWE JONES

TALLADEGA — Graveside service for Liloise (Lil) Rowe Jones, 84, will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Dr. Rob Paul officiating.

Mrs. Jones died Oct. 4 at Talladega Health Care Center. She was a native of Talladega and a member of First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of the Talladega High School Class of 1937 and was an avid bridge player and golfer. She was preceded in death by her husband, U.L. (Doc) Jones and her parents, Reuben M. and Mamie Kelley Rowe.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Jones and Sherri Jones of Charlotte, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Talladega or to Lakeside Hospice.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.

SHIRLEY ANNETTE RUSSO

SYLACAUGA — Funeral service for Shirley Annette Russo, 65, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Curtis and Son Funeral Home South Chapel with the Rev. Rouzelle Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery.

Mrs. Russo died Oct. 3 at her residence in Sylacauga.

She was Baptist by faith.

She is survived by three sons, William Goggins of Florida, Orrie Goggins of Florida and Johnny Mack Goggins of Sylacauga; six daughters, Barbara Carryl of Georgia, Darlene Leming of Louisiana, Sandy Tinnin of Lineville, Linda Tucker of Florida and Becky Hodges and Beverly Goggins of Pennsylvania; two brothers, James Reeves and Jerry Reeves, both of Sylacauga; three sisters, Carolyn Tyler and Brenda Riggins, both of Sylacauga; and Betty Smelcer of Georgia; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will be pallbearers.

Visitation Sunday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

ANNISTON — Willie Maude Snow, 68, of Hobson City, died Oct. 4 at Regional Medical Center. She was a former mayor of Hobson City.

ANNISTON — Grover Louis “Bill” Talley, 55, formerly of Anniston, died Sept. 30 at the V.A. Hospital in Denver, Colo.
