'There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.' Wilder. Russell 'Alan' Sather, MD died peacefully and with dignity after a brave struggle with cancer in his home, encircled with the love of his many friends, family and within his beloved wife's arms, Feb. 15th, 2004. The son of a nurse and a doctor, Alan was born Jan. 6, 1935 to the late Inez Laible and Russell Olav Sather and was raised in Crookston, MN, where his love of nature, small town life, walking and visiting neighbors became lifelong enjoyments. After two years at Univ. of Minn., he joined the USAF and flew the KC 135 as navigator for Strategic Arms Command from 1956 to 1962. Retiring his commission of captain, he returned to Univ. of Minn. to complete his undergraduate and medical school training, working summers as a farmhand, railroad lineman, and a cowboy. He interned at Parkland in Dallas, TX and came to OUHSC in Okla. City in 1969 to become one of the first doctors in OK to complete the newly offered family medicine residency and the AFPA board certification. He taught and mentored scores of residents over the next 15 years; at OU in Okla. City until 1978, at UAB in Birmingham, AL until 1984, and at KU in Wichita until 1986. He loved teaching young doctors and often imparted this wisdom, 'All paths share the same end, so choose yours with heart, and then you make the journey your own.' In 1986, he became director of Maxicare HMO in BHM, AL until 1988 when he opened his practice in Sylacauga, AL. Over the next 13 years, he became well known as a caring physician and good friend to hundreds in his adopted hometown. He relished the diversity and gifts of insight his patients gave him; the dignity of the blue collar worker, the courage and wisdom of the elderly, the loving sacrifices of mothers for their children. In 2000, he retired due to a rare lung disease, IPF, and was blessed with receiving a lung transplant in Oct. at UAB. In his last years, Alan was a champion of organ donation, a consultant to OUFP's program in OKC and to the Choctaw Nations Clinic in Talihina, OK. Over the last 30 years, his spiritual beliefs have aligned with the traditions of the Plains and Southwest Native American Tribes. His last thoughts were for each of his children and this, 'I've had a wonderful life and the last part was the best.' Always busy, quick with a smile, a wink and a hug, we say to you, dear friend and fearless chief, 'Hey, Babe, you're top drawer! You will be missed, and God speed on your new adventure.' He is survived by his best friend and spouse, Peg Trosper Sather, OKC; his beloved children, Julia Ann Marie Sather and Ross Alan Sather, BHM, AL, Kristin Sather Hayslip, Dallas, TX, and step son and wife, Sean McCarty and Allie Schultheis, SF, CA; his loving sister/brother in law, Karen and Ron Makovsky, Silver Lake, MN; his treasured grandchildren; Austin Alan Harris, BHM, AL and Grace E. McCarty, SF, CA; his friends, as well as, his sisters and brothers in law, Marianne Trosper Lane and Mike Blankenship of OKC, Tim and Coleen Trosper, Dallas, TX; and his dear nephews and nieces, Erik and Kirsti Hendricksen of St. Paul and Mpls., MN, Amy Anne Lane, Dallas, TX, Joel, Lenee, and Lauren Lane, OKC, Dustin J. Trosper, Dallas, TX. A celebration of Alan's life will be noon, Sat., Feb. 21st, 2004 at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, 7800 NW Expressway with a reception at Standing Room Only, 5801 W. Britton Rd. following. You can honor Alan's life in the profoundest way by becoming an organ donor and telling your family of your desire.
