WOODLAND - Services for Mrs. Beatrice Jones Bailey, 76, of Woodland, will be at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Carmel Church of Christ with Bro. Mark Carpenter, Bro. Ricky Murphy and Bro. Alan Daniel officiating. Mrs. Bailey wil lie in state one hour before service at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge.

Mrs. Bailey died Saturday at Wedowee Hospital.

Survivors include her husband R.Z. Bailey of Woodland; a son Ronnie, his wife Janet, of Woodland; two grandchildren, Nicholis and Candace Bailey; three sisters, Pearlie Davis of Shawmut, Hazel Williams of Roanoke, Faye Mapp of Franklin, Ga.; and a brother, Roosevelt Jones of LaGrange, Ga.


HEFLIN - Services for Bertha Mae Bonner, 76, of Heflin will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Bonner died Sunday at Nolen Health System.


Services for Ronald F. Gray, 57, of Anniston will be at 12 noon today at Greater Thankful Baptist Church in Anniston with the Rev. P.Q. English officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with Ervin Funeral Chapel in charge. Viewing will be at the church an hour prior to the service.

Mr. Gray died Wednesday at his residence.

Ronald F. Gray was born in Chicago, Ill., on December 4, 1947, to parents Edward Gray and Willie Mae Gray. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with the Second Baptist Church in Bastrop, La. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Gwendolyn Evans on Nov. 22, 1982. He joined the United States Army at the age of 18 as a Chemical Operations Specialist with the 54B4H Company. During his tenure, he retired from the U.S. Army and received the Overseas Service Ribbon (AWD3), Army Good Conduct Medal (6th AWD), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (10LC), Vietnam Service Medal W/1, Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Overseas Service Bars (4), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), Army Commendation Medal and Sharp Shooter Badge Rifle. He received an Associates Degree from Rex Electronic Institute in Birmingham, and also an Associates Degree from Gadsden State Junior College. He was an employee of Anniston Army Depot as an Emergency Operation Specialist GS-11.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Mae Gray. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Gwendolyn A. Gray; one son, Randall L. Gray (Renee) of Anniston; his father, Edward Gray of Bastrop, La.; two sisters, Patricia Gray (Hank), of Bastrop, La., Lola Banks of Clinton, Miss.; a god-sister, Wanda G. Gray (Gerald), of Bastrop, La.; one devoted brother, Lloyd Edward Gray of Monroe, La.; two grandchildren, Charity M. Gray and Randall L. Gray Jr., of Anniston; two nieces, Jennifer Banks of Clinton, Miss., and Jennie Banks of Bastrop, La; three nephews, Marlon Thompson of Savannah, Ga., Jeremy Thompson of Minneapolis, Minn., and John Gray of New Orleans, La.; and a host of friends.


EASTABOGA - Services for Antonio Lamar Parker, will be announced by Goodson Funeral Home. The infant died Friday at St. Vincents Hospital in Birmingham.


FRUITHURST - Services for Mary Jane Parrish, 81, of Fruithurst, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel in Heflin with the Rev. George Pike officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Anniston with Dryden Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Parrish died Saturday at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Seal, of Fruithurst and Betty Davis, of Bremen, Ga.; two brothers, Coy Haney, of Heflin, and H.L. Hammond, of Fruithurst; 23 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tony Harrell, Andy Harrell, Windell Harrell, Steven Bolden, David McCain, Keith Parrish, Roy Woodrow and Doug Brown. Mrs. Parrish was a native and lifelong resident of Cleburne County where whe was a homemaker for her family.


GADSDEN - Services for Frances Simmons Scales, 89, of Gadsden will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Collier Butler Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in Crestwood Cemetery with Collier Butler Funeral Home in charge. Her family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the funeral.

Mrs. Scales was the widow of the late Bobby Scales, a long time employee of Collier Butler Funeral Home and later the manager. She was the daughter of the late M.C. and Maggie Lanford Simmons and had one brother, William E. Simmons, a pioneer family of Calhoun County. She was born in Calhoun County, a graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended Jacksonville State University. After selling their Calhoun County property, she moved along with her parents to Gadsden, where they lived together as a close and happy family. She was employed with WHMA Radio in Anniston and later transferred to WAAX in Gadsden where she retired as bookkeeper and accountant. She loved Gadsden and joined Calvary Baptist Church, later moving and joining Meadow Brook Baptist Church.

She is survived by her nephew, Harold Simmons and nieces, Jean Bittle and Margaret Blackerby. A special thanks to her friends, neighbors, church family and care givers.


OXFORD - Services for Peter Straub, 59, of Oxford will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with Chaplain Robert Washington and Pastor Michael Truss officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Straub died Saturday at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife Betty Straub of Oxford; a son, Peter Joshua Straub, of Jacksonville; a stepdaughter Sheena Baker, of Oxford; a stepson, Jermaine Baker, of Heflin; a sister, Sherrie Lowrie, of Hermitage, Pa.; two brothers, Darel Straub, and Daniel Straub, both of Titusville, Pa.

Mr. Straub, a U.S. Navy veteran, was a native of Pennsylvania and a resident of Calhoun County for 27 years. He was a 1973 graduate of Clarion University and was employed by New Beacon Hospice and was formerly an employee of Cleburne County Nursing Home, Southern Care Hospice, Beckwood Manor Nursing Home, and Seton Home Health. He also worked at, Jacksonville Hospital and Titusville Hospital in Titusville, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to New Beacon Hospice.

Services for James R. Baldwin, 54, of Anniston will be 1 p.m Saturday at Rest Haven Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Ray Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lincoln, Ala. with Goodson Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends from 12 noon til 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Baldwin will lie in state an hour prior to service. Mr. Baldwin died Monday at the VA Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Baldwin, of Anniston; a sister, Brenda McHeard of Birmingham; three brothers, Jerry Baldwin, Dewitt Baldwin, Jr. and David Baldwin, all of Birmingham; his mother, Elizabeth Baldwin, of Anniston.

Mr. Baldwin, an Army veteran, served during the Vietnam War and was preceded in death by his father, Dewitt Baldwin, Sr. and a sister, Linda Nolan.


MUSCADINE Mrs. Bernice Lillie Whitt Brown, 90, of Muscadine, passed away March 9, 2005. Mrs. Brown was born August 27, 1914, in Sardis, to the late James Wesley and Rebecca Stone Whitt. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, when he died, April 29, 1969, the Rev. Silas Phillip Brown, Sr.; a daughter, Carolyn Gladys Brown; two sisters, Elzie Ann Whitt and Elsie Mae White, six brothers, Marion Whitt, Earl Whitt, Eugene Whitt, Zelmar Whitt, Vernon Whitt and Dewain Whitt; daughters-in-law, Gladys Gibson Brown, Ruby Robinson Brown, Charlotte Ginn Swafford Brown; and brothers-in-law, Vernon Edward McElroy.

Mrs. Brown was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and a true matriarch of the Brown family as she made her life's work as mother and homemaker. Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughter, Patricia Brown McElroy; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Silas and Ethel Brown, James Winford and Myrtice Brown, all of Muscadine, Ralph and Eunice Brown, of Tallapoosa, William Lloyd and Sandra Brown, Gene Autry and Martha Brown, all of Muscadine, and Bill and Carol Brown, of Buchanan; a care giver, Lucille McElroy; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Brown's funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today from Beulah Baptist Church, in Muscadine, with Dr. James Phillip(Buddy) Brown, Dr. Ronald Brown, and the Rev. Donald Leggett officiating. Mrs. Brown will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. EST. Music will be rendered by Joel and Brenda Agan, Brant Howell, Reba Gay and Steven Bentley.

Pallbearers serving will be her grandsons, Joe Brown, Wilbur Brown, John Brown, Tim Brown, Kyle Brown, Michael Brown, Sy Brown, Whitt Brown and Cabot Howell. Interment will follow in Beulah Church Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Brown, the Rev. Bobby Jarrett, and the Rev. Ryan Brown officiating. Miller Funeral Home of Tallapoosa is in charge of the arrangements.


PELL CITY Services for Margaret Isabella Houston Brown, 79, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Riverside with Bishop Chris Gover officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery with Sims Funeral Service in charge. Mrs. Brown died Monday at Medical Center East in Birmingham. She is survived by five children, Elliott Brown, Belvine Brown, both of Cropwell, Yolane Allen, of Greenville, S.C., Broderick Brown of Canton, Ohio, Bernadette Brown of Mauldin, S.C.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Rory Cochran, Chad Cochran, Patrick Scott, and E.J. Mitchell.


Services for Mrs. Nettie Chatmen, 56, of Anniston, will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel in Anniston. Mrs. Chatman died Thursday at Stringfellow Hospital in Anniston.


GADSDEN Services for Julia Ann Couch Hardy, 89, of Gadsden, will be Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Grand Avenue Church of God in Gadsden with the Rev. L.J. Knight officiating. Mrs. Hardy will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Rainbow Memorial Park in Gadsden with K.L. Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Center in charge. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 tonight. Mrs. Hardy died Wednesday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a son, Charles Hardy and his wife Sarah, of Anniston; 9 grandchildren, Jimmy Hardy, Robert Hardy, Scottie Hardy, Frank Hardy, Vanessa Langston, Lisa Bradley, Darren Hardy, Duane Hardy, Emily Smith; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Frank Hardy, Darren Hardy, Duane Hardy, Scottie Hardy, Robert Hardy, Danny Couch, Dennis Couch, Cameron Hardy. Mrs. Hardy was a native of Calhoun County and a resident of Gadsden since 1969. She was a caregiver for the elderly and ill. Preceded in death by her son Bobby Hardy and granddaughters Sheila Patton and Velma Ann Keel.


TALLADEGA Services for Willie Jemison, 63, of Talladega will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary. Mr. Jemison died Thursday at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. (UAB)


ANNISTON Funeral services for Superintendent Dewitt A. Moore, 89, will be Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m., at Zion Rising Star Church of C.O.G.I.C., in Anniston, with Bishop Dr. T. S. Gray, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery, in Anniston with Anniston Funeral Services in charge. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Mr. Moore died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi Moore, of Anniston; three daughters, Norris C. Daishell, of Compton, Calif., Irma Jean White, of Birmingham, Ida May Staples, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sons, Dewitt A. Moore and wife, Agnes, of Shreveport, La., Pettis Lee Moore, of Birmingham, the Rev. Robert M. Moore and wife, Beverly, of Cambra Heights, N.Y.; three step-daughters, Sebrena Foster, of Anniston, Marilyn Walker and husband, Jimmie, of Sylacauga, Stella Ervin and husband, Victor, of Birmingham; two step-sons, Bobby Foster and wife, Shandel, of Anniston, Tony E. Foster and wife, Stephanie, of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister Parlee Glenn of Cleveland, Ohio; 46 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Supt. Moore was a life-long resident, a minister and pastor of various churches. He was the pastor of the Zion Rising Star Church of C.O.G.I.C. and had been in the Anniston District since 1975. The family will accept flowers. Anniston Funeral Services is in charge of the services.


Services for Green Penn, 81, of Steubenville, Ohio, formerly of Talladega will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary. Mr. Penn died Thursday at Trinity Medical Center West.


NANCE'S CREEK Mrs. Annie Lou Smith, 82, of Nance's Creek Community, died Wednesday at her residence. A native of Cleburne County, Mrs. Smith was born on November 16, 1922, the daughter of the late Lee & Rebecca Coppock Coley. She had lived the greater part of her live in Nance's Creek and was a member of the Nance's Creek Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Kinebrew Smith, by a son Kenneth Smith, by a granddaughter LaVonda Hammonds, by a grandson Mark Smith and by her three brothers.

Survivors include her children; Lavon Smith of Nance's Creek, Robert Smith of Anniston, and by Virginia Hall of Piedmont. Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren along with a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be conducted today at 2 p.m. from the family lot of the Nance'e Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Floyd Willis officiating. The family will receive friends today from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at the Folsom-Mickelsen Funeral Home. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers and are requested to meet at the funeral home today by 1:30 p.m., Chris McFry, Mark Howard, Randell Doss, Steven Smith and Scott Adderhold. Folsom-Mickelsen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.


HEFLIN Services for Mable Nadine Stephens, 78, of Heflin, will be begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny McDaniel officiating. Burial will follow at Chulafinnee Methodist Cemetery with Dryden Funeral Home in charge. Visitation will be between 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Stephens died Thursday at Cleburne County Nursing Home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Survivors include two sisters, Lola Freeman, of Chester, Okla., Hazel Forrest, of Tahlequah, Okla.; a brother, Jack D. Watkins, of Tulsa, Okla.; and a caregiver, Fred Gore, of Heflin. Mrs. Stephens a native of Oklahoma was a resident of Cleburne and Calhoun Counties for the past 55 years. She was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church and a former member of Golden Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Walker Stephens, and a brother Wallace Watkins.

In lieu of flowers, donations shall be made to the New Harmony Baptist Church, Heflin.
